EASTRIDGE CHURCH’S TURKEYS-AND-GROCERIES EVENT: Starting at 9 am, outside the church at 39th/Oregon, Eastridge’s annual distribution of turkeys and groceries, but this time, drive up instead of lining up. Approach NB on 39th, and they ask that you NOT be there early – they have hundreds.

WEST SEATTLE FOOD BANK AT SSC: Special distribution:

The West Seattle Food Bank, partnering with South Seattle College, will have a drive-thru distribution at 10 am at South Seattle College, North Lot #1, 6000 16th Ave SW. Each family can receive a turkey along with a box of fresh produce and dairy. Everyone must wear masks and remain in their car.

GREATER SEATTLE FIL-AM SDA CHURCH’S HOLIDAY MEAL BOXES: The church at 2620 SW Kenyon will, starting at 2 pm, have 50 boxes to give out, with turkey, potatoes, stuffing, brownie mix, and fruit. This also is drive-up/no-contact.

SOCKS/FOOD DONATION DRIVE: Help people stay warm and fed:

It’s never too early to share the holiday spirit. Alki United Church of Christ (Alki UCC) is hosting an in-person socially distanced Thanksgiving Food Drive this Sunday, November 15 between 10:00 am and 3:00 pm. Collections are being taken outside the church’s main entrance at 6115 SW Hinds in West Seattle.

Priority items, distributed through the White Center Food Bank, include Boxed Stuffing Mix, Instant Mashed Potatoes, Turkey Gravy, Yams, Cranberry Sauce, Canned Veggies, Cornbread Mix, Canned Fruit Pie Filling, Pie Crust Mix, etc. Donations of personal-care items and (clearly labeled) packets of pet food are also welcome.

Donations of Men’s Casual/Work Clothes are also welcome, as well as SOCKS, SOCKS, SOCKS — the clothing item most requested by our neighbors experiencing homelessness.

The online tracker Flightradar24 shows UPS flight 5X958 left Boeing Field headed for Portland about that time – but was diverted back to Boeing Field. Here’s its track:

Boeing Field spokesperson Cameron Satterfield confirms to WSB, “A UPS Boeing 757 ingested birds in one of its engines during take-off at about 4:20 this morning. The cargo aircraft returned to King County International Airport-Boeing Field and landed without incident about 20 minutes later. Airport crews were dispatched afterward to check the runway for debris, but found nothing. The runway reopened at about 5:00 am.”

We have a message out to UPS about the status of the plane and its cargo. (added) Thanks also to Vlad Oustimovitch for pointing out the LiveATC.net archive of air-traffic-control audio of the incident; he sent this excerpt in which the pilot first reports what happened. We listened to later audio via the site – in addition to what’s mentioned above, the pilot asked airport crews to check the plane’s exterior for damage. A few minutes later, he mentions apparent aftermath of what happened, telling the tower, “You’ll see the murder scene … quite a pile of feathers.”

KING COUNTY ELECTION DROP BOXES: The five in our area and nearby are open until 8 pm. If you are in line – not walking or running to the line, but actually in line – at exactly 8 pm, your ballot will be accepted. KCE will have staff (and plainclothes security) there to help, although they acknowledge the last-minute rush isn’t likely to resemble past years because so many people (80 percent of Seattle voters as of last night). Here, first, are the locations:

LAST-MINUTE REGISTERING? State law allows you to do that today until 8 pm, but you have to do it in person at a Vote Center – here’s the countywide list; nearest one is at the CenturyLink Field Event Center (register and you will get a ballot and be able to turn it in on the spot).

VOTING-RELATED QUESTION OR PROBLEM? 206-296-VOTE.

WHEN WILL WE SEE RESULTS? KCE plans, as usual, one results report tonight: “We generally look to have those results up by about 8:15 p.m. but please be patient as we will get them up as quickly as possible and it’s a big file this time around.” With so many ballots returned early, they are expecting tonight’s results to include more than 1 million ballots (about 70 percent of the 1.4 million sent out in mid-October; overall turnout forecast is 90 percent). Tomorrow and each day after that, results updates will be posted around 4 pm.

Here’s what’s happening today – starting with what’s happening right now:

NUTMOBILE: Until we got the announcement about its visit to the Senior Center of West Seattle today, we were somehow unaware of the existence of the Planters Peanuts Nutmobile. It’s there until about 11 am, as part of a celebration of Meals On Wheels volunteers. Look for it in the parking lot east of the center, off 42nd SW south of SW Oregon.

BUDGET MEETING: Also happening now, the first of two City Council meetings today in which they’re continuing their review of budget proposals – including the proposed change in misdemeanor criminal defense. The agenda includes viewing information.

WEST SEATTLE BRIDGE COMMUNITY TASK FORCE: Online at noon, the advisory group talks more about the Cost-Benefit Analysis that’s meant to help shape the repair/replace decision. Mayor Durkan will attend part of the meeting to hear task force members’ feedback, according to the agenda. You’ll be able to see the livestream here.

BOEING FIELD’S FUTURE: Today’s the day – as previewed here – that King County International Airport is having online “open houses” to talk about its future, aka the Master Plan. Proposed projects of note include a new airport “fuel farm” on the west side of East Marginal Way, just across the Duwamish River. We’re taking a moment to remind you that Daylight Saving Time ends early Sunday (2 am November 1st) – that’s when we “fall back” one hour. So while the sunset is right before 6 pm now, next week it’ll be before 5 pm – moving toward the earliest sunsets of the year, 4:17 pm on December 9-10.

P.S. Though it’s now been a year and a half since our state law changed to allow permanent Daylight Saving Time, its implementation won’t happen unless Congress changes federal law. There was an attempt this fall to at least extend DST for a year.

VOTING: As of last night, 55 percent of Seattle voters had turned in their ballots. King County Elections is hoping for 90 percent turnout. Imagine how cool it would be if those all got in early enough to be part of the Election Night results! Food and basic supplies such as toilet paper and diapers are distributed through the White Center Food Bank. We’re accepting school supplies for all grades on behalf of one or more local schools to be distributed when students are back at in-person learning. Donations of clean, new, or used men’s casual/work clothing are distributed through the Westside Interfaith Network’s hot lunch program for people experiencing homelessness, The Welcome Table. Thank you again for supporting our most vulnerable neighbors in this challenging time.

In case you missed the announcement this past week – the Seattle Public Library is bringing back due dates. Here’s the announcement:

That stack of books and DVDs you’ve had since March? We’re ready for them to come back! Starting Nov. 1, staggered due dates will be applied to all physical materials currently checked out from The Seattle Public Library. Due dates were suspended when Library buildings were closed to help stop the spread of COVID-19.

“Now that Curbside Pickup and book return services are in full swing, it’s important we get books and other materials back to ensure a well-stocked collection for patrons who are ready to check out new items,” said Bo Kinney, managing librarian for the Library’s Circulation Services.

Loan periods will remain the same as they were prior to the Library’s COVID-19 closure: three weeks for most materials and two weeks for DVDs and Peak Picks titles. Patrons will be contacted individually about specific due dates and return options.

BOOK DROPS OPEN DAILY

The Library is now accepting returns at 13 Library locations [in West Seattle – High Point and Southwest]. No appointment is necessary to return materials. Book drops are open daily from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., or until they are full.

Two weeks before a patron’s due date, a one-time email notice will be sent asking for materials to be returned and providing information about return options. We will also be sending regular due date reminders and other notices, available by email, phone, and text message. See spl.org/notifications for more detail. To pick up new holds while returning books, visit the Library’s Curbside Service page for locations, hours and appointment options.

NO MORE LATE FINES

The Library no longer charges daily late fines for overdue items, thanks to the 2019 Library Levy, and, if no one else is waiting, an item may be renewed up to three times. However, patrons are still responsible for returning items on time. If an item is kept 31 days past the due date, a patron’s Library account will be temporarily suspended and some digital media services will not be accessible until all overdue items are returned. (Normally, a patron’s account would be suspended if an item is kept 14 days past its due date, but that rule has been relaxed during this time.)

As for when SPL will reopen for in-building service – they’re still working on that.
