Now that it’s Thursday, the Mariners‘ next playoff game is just hours away (12:37 pm our time at Houston). And we have two related notes:
NEW FERRY NAMES: Washington State Ferries says it’s temporarily renaming all the boats in its fleet for as long as the M’s are in the playoffs, as directed by this proclamation. The new names are mostly M’s players. The two currently on the Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth run, for example, M/V Sealth and M/V Kittitas, are temporarily M/V Robbie Ray and M/V Mitch Haniger. With that amazing comeback win on Saturday, the Mariners have made it to Level 2 of the playoffs – the American League Divisional Series. Their best-of-five series against the Astros starts at 12:37 pm tomorrow at Houston. No watch party at T-Mobile Park this time, as the stadium is preparing to host Game 3 (and if all goes well Game 4) of the series, but there’s a West Seattle tie to a memorable element of the watch party for Saturday’s victory. The “rally cap” is well-known in baseball lore, but one fan there decided to put a shoe on his head when the Mariners were still four runs behind – and as they kept making up ground, the “rally shoe” caught on. WSB reader Doug pointed out this Seattle Times story tying the “rally shoe” to Ben Cox of West Seattle. He told The Times that he was inspired by someone else he saw do it earlier in the season. After the M’s completed their 10-9 victory, Cox turned the shoe over to the M’s, who tweeted that the shoe (which, they said, actually belonged to Cox’s wife) would go into the team Hall of Fame.
Both local high-school football teams played at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex last night. Here are the results, from the Metro League scoreboard: In Friday night’s first game, West Seattle High School lost to Lakeside on homecoming night, 20-13. In the nightcap, Chief Sealth International High School defeated Cleveland, 51-14. Next week, Sealth plays Nathan Hale, 7 pm Thursday (October 13th) at Northeast Athletic Complex, while WSHS is at home (NCSWAC), 7 pm Friday (October 14th).
One day, more than a dozen programs. That’s what Friday’s “One Day for West Seattle” fundraiser is all about. The West Seattle Booster Club is looking to collect community support in a one-day burst of donations, as explained in the announcement:
One Day for West Seattle is a 24-hour online campaign with the goal of uniting West Seattle families, friends, alumni, and community members to join in celebration of WSHS Athletics through philanthropic giving.
This year, the West Seattle Booster Club is rallying the Wildcat community with the goal of raising $5,000 for each sponsored program in 24 hours.
All funds donated to each program will stay within that specific program. Financial donations will be used for the purchase of: equipment, student travel, uniforms, warmups, tournaments, meet entry fees, team meals and hotels.
During the “One Day for West Seattle” event, donors can visit https://westseattleboosterclub.org/donate to designate their gifts to the specific teams or clubs they are passionate about supporting.

ORIGINAL WEDNESDAY REPORT: Friday, the Mariners play a two-decades-in-the-making game – their first playoff game since 2001. It’s happening in Toronto, so most of the cheering will be from 2,500 miles away. Wondering where you can do that cheering in West Seattle? Hard to imagine with this extended summery weather, but snow season really isn’t far away, and that’s why Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor) wants to help you get ready by presenting the annual West Seattle Ski Swap. M2SO has been presenting the Ski Swap for more than a decade! This year it’s set for Saturday and Sunday, October 22-23, at the West Seattle VFW Hall (3601 SW Alaska, across the street from the M2SO shop). You can sell and/or buy gear for the season ahead. If you’re selling, the dropoff hours are 3-7 pm Friday, October 21, and you can register in advance here; if you’re shopping, the hours will be 10 am-5 pm Saturday and 10 am-4 pm Sunday on sale weekend. Tough night for both local high-school teams, according to the Metro League scoreboard for Friday night. West Seattle High School, playing at home at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex, lost to Lincoln, 28-17; Chief Sealth International High School, playing on the road at the Northeast Athletic Complex, lost to Ingraham, 47-16. Next Friday (October 7th) both play at NCSWAC – the Wildcats (2-2) play Lakeside at 4:30 pm, followed by the Seahawks (2-3) playing Cleveland at 7:30.
As seen from North Admiral, that “W” is for the Mariners‘ biggest win in 21 years – the one last night that guaranteed them a spot in the playoffs for the first time since 2001. The photo is from Al, who also saw the “W” from inside the stadium, because he was there for the 2-1 win over Oakland.

If you’re among the many fans of pickleball, here’s an online petition you might want to sign: Local members of the Seattle Metro Pickleball Association are helping with the campaign to get custom vehicle license plates for the sport’s supporters. The plate would raise money to go toward a dedicated pickleball facility. They need 3,500 signatures expressing interest in the plate, to meet a state Department of Licensing requirement for creating a plate like this, we’re told. If you want to sign, you can go here. 10:09 PM: This year’s cross-peninsula bragging rights have just gone back to Chief Sealth International High School, after they won the annual Huling Bowl football game against West Seattle High School, 34-8. The Wildcats won resoundingly last year after four consecutive Seahawk wins, but tonight Chief Sealth had the upper hand on the field. Details and photos later.
3:10 AM: We’ve added more toplines and photos/video from the game, which drew a sizable crowd to Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex, bigger than we can remember in most years (weather might have been a factor – the game is often later in the season, and last year it was raining). Both schools had robust cheering sections:

That was the scene as West Seattle High School sophomore Terryus Smith was taken to an ambulance after being injured during Friday night’s game against Cleveland at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex. Program spokesperson Sarah Lenssen says he is still in the hospital and they’re crowdfunding for his family. Donations are being accepted through this GoFundMe page, which explains:
(Terryus) suffered a major injury to his leg during a football game. He was rushed to the hospital by ambulance and has already had multiple surgeries. He’s expected to be in the hospital for several days before his long recovery begins.
We are still learning more about the family’s needs, but in the meantime, as the West Seattle Wildcat community, we want to show the Smith family our support and help them with whatever needs they have!
Lenssen adds, “Terryus is a very important member of our team and was the JVC MVP as a freshman last year.”

The West Seattle High School Wildcats are now 3-0 on the season, after a big win over Cleveland at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex on Friday night.
We were there in the early going, as WSHS started piling up the points on their way to a 41-0 victory.

The rain cleared early but it was a tough night on the field at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex for the Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks facing Franklin.

Tonight Chief Sealth was unable to get on the board, losing 23-0.
They’re now 1-2. Next week it’s the annual crosstown Huling Bowl game as Chief Sealth takes on West Seattle, 7:30 pm Friday (September 23rd).
7:58 PM: The West Seattle High School Wildcats are out to a 2-0 start in the football season. They played Franklin this afternoon at Memorial Stadium downtown and went home with a 7-0 win. Next week they’re back at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex, playing Cleveland at 7:30 pm Friday (September 16th).
8:45 PM: Commenter KWest Seattle says the game was called early because of air quality, which the Metro League website (linked above as our source) did not indicate when we checked it for the away-game score. We’re attempting to reach school reps.
ADDED SUNDAY: WSHS principal Brian Vance confirmed via email, “Game was suspended after the first quarter due to poor air quality. Waiting for information on rescheduling.”

The Chief Sealth International High School Seahawks have their first victory of the season, and they did it in fairly dramatic style Friday night at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex. Neither they nor the visiting Lakeside Lions scored in the first quarter. Lakeside got a TD in the final minute of the first half, going into halftime with a 6-0 lead. That’s where the score stood until the fourth quarter. Lakeside added another TD – and then the Seahawks started their comeback.
After Chief Sealth picked off a Lakeside pass and moved down the field, #5, junior Jamal Guy Jr., got the Seahawks’ first TD across the line with 8 minutes left in the game. With the extra point, they were only behind by 5, 12-7. But it took Chief Sealth until 1:32 was left to get the game-winning TD, run in by #11, senior Dayne Camacho.
Final score: 13-12.
Head coach Daron Camacho‘s Seahawks are now 1-1. Next week, they’re at NCSWAC (2801 SW Thistle) again, 4:30 pm Friday (September 16th) vs. Franklin.

West Seattle High School senior quarterback Axel Johnson, #9, got the first and only Wildcat touchdown in Friday night’s game against Renton – and that’s all they needed for a win. The TD came toward the end of the first half, and 7-0 is where Head Coach Jeff Scott‘s Wildcats stood going into the second half.

A few minutes into the second half, Renton got a touchdown of its own – but failed its attempt at a two-point conversion. And WSHS held them from further scoring, so 7-6 was the final score for the West Seattle victory.
Next weekend, WSHS plays Franklin at 2 pm Saturday (September 10th) at Memorial Stadium downtown.

#2, senior Demiko Bousely, scored Chief Sealth International High School‘s first touchdown of the year in this afternoon’s season-opening game vs. Franklin Pierce. That came midway through the second quarter, after FP had gone out to a 14-0 lead.

But then FP broke out with 14 unanswered points in the fourth quarter and that left CSIHS with a 28-14 loss. … In other notes, the cheer squad invited everyone to come dressed as superheroes or supervillains:

Head coach Jeff Scott and the West Seattle High School Wildcats are getting ready for football season, with the home opener against Renton at 7 pm Friday (September 2nd) at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). Before they take the field, the team is hoping for an assist from you – they’re fundraising for costs beyond what basic funding covers: Uniforms, equipment, training for coaches. Seated on the rocky shore at Point Williams in Lincoln Park, surrounded by supporters, that’s Amanda Winans, who successfully completed what’s known as the Bert Thomas Swim today – leaving the Old Town Tacoma dock early this morning and swimming up Colvos Passage along the west side of Vashon Island, before crossing Puget Sound to West Seattle. She finished earlier than expected, around 2:30 pm, and is the third known person to complete the swim, including its namesake (in 1959). Her unofficial time: 9:30:23. Three years ago, she did the Amy Hiland Swim, Bremerton to Alki Point. As noted here, the Northwest Open Water Swimming Association has two more members attempting marathon swims tomorrow, both set to finish at Alki Point.
12:10 PM SATURDAY: Challenging conditions out on Puget Sound this morning, but some hardy people showed up for Sound Rowers and Paddlers‘ annual Great Cross-Sound Race from/to Alki. Top photo shows the first ones in, #16. (Full results will be here when finalized.) The race is a decades-old tradition, on the current course to Blakely Rock and back since 1994.
12:51 PM SUNDAY: Results are now up, here. The first finishers, in #16, were Juraj Osusky & Peter Turcan, in 1:01:13. Three seconds behind was Egor Klevak, #21.

When last we heard from West Seattle ultra runner Riley Nachtrieb, she ran the 132-mile Olympic Discovery Trail in May. Now – she’s getting ready for a new adventure. She sent this update:
I will leave for India on August 26th to run the 17,600 ft Khardung La Challenge on September 9th (13,000 ft start, 17,600 ft summit, 10,000 ft finish).
Not only is this a big feat in altitude, as I am coming from sea-level in Seattle, I will also be the first person from the US, and the youngest to ever run this race.
I will run 45 miles across the Khardung La Pass, located in Leh Ladakh, Kashmir Jammu, India – at the base of the Western Himalaya Mountain Range. This is also known as the highest motorable road in the world.
I am really excited for this next adventure, since I completed my goal to set the first recorded run across the Olympic Peninsula in May. I have been traveling to Colorado in the past months in preparation for the Khardung La race.
I want to thank the West Seattle Community for always supporting me and my love for running. I will not have a live tracker for the race.

6:13 PM: Just heading out, hundreds of runners are participating in this year’s Alki Beach Sunset Run. They’re headed toward Duwamish Head and back; an outdoor cocktail party with a DJ will follow. No road closures.
7:30 PM: Race presenters Fizz Events told us they had about 500 registrations for this year’s run. They were launched in four waves – (updated) here are all four:
