This is the second weekend of the short summer season for the DubSea Fish Sticks, playing at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center. If you’re up for going to tomorrow night’s game, you can buy tickets through a special link and do some good for the youth players of West Seattle Baseball! The Fish Sticks face the Redmond Dudes at 6:05 pm Saturday (June 11th) and you can get those special tickets right now by going here.

Registration is open for a benefit golf tournament this month whose organizers have local ties. Here’s the announcement:
The Duc Foundation has launched the 3rd annual Nguyen Junior Amateur Golf Tournament, presented by Starbucks. The tournament, organized entirely by Seattle-area youths, will take place on Sunday, June 26, with proceeds from the event benefiting the Duc Foundation Scholarship Fund, CJK Community Homes, and First Tee of Greater Seattle.
The tournament was founded in 2020 by Lauryn Nguyen, Maya Nguyen, Kylie Nguyen, Brianna Nguyen, Sofia Nguyen, and Lily Nguyen, who collectively call themselves the Nguyen Sisterhood
. The inaugural Nguyen Junior Amateur Golf Tournament raised over $24,415 for the Washington Junior Golf Association. The 2021 event raised a collective $16,000 for The First Tee of Greater Seattle and Washington Junior Golf Association.“I am honored to be leading this event into its third year as we grow to include sponsorships from Starbucks and Amazon,” said Alex Nguyen, Tournament Director. “We are excited about the opportunity to come together for a community-building round of golf, all while benefiting these amazing organizations.”
Lauryn Nguyen, West Seattle HS Class of 2020, was recently named 2022 Big 10 Freshman Golfer of the Year as she wrapped up her first year at Northwestern University. “It’s a privilege to be able to play competitive golf,” said Lauryn. “It takes a lot of time, resources, and support. For me to be able to pursue this game for over a decade, to make it to some of junior golf’s most elite tournaments, speaks to a level of privilege that I’m not sure I will ever be able to pay back.” To that end, the Nguyen families continue to team up to host the annual Nguyen Junior Am Charity Golf Tournament.
The Nguyen Junior Amateur Golf Tournament is open for registration until June 12. The tournament will take place on Sunday, June 26, at the North Shore Golf Course in Tacoma, Washington. Information and to sign up for the event is available at DucFoundation.org.
Duc Foundation works to empower our youth through the development of leadership and life skills by providing our youth with a platform for community engagement opportunities. The Foundation is led by Alex Phong, Kylie Vy, and Lauryn Thuy-Duyen and named in honor of Alex and Lauryn’s grandfather, Duc Nguyen, who immigrated to Seattle in 1975. He was a tireless advocate for the Vietnamese American community of the area before a tragic accident left him quadriplegic in 1994. The Foundation seeks to continue his legacy of civic engagement and generational community-building.

The SW Titans, our local K-8th grade lacrosse league, participated in the largest tournament in the state this weekend: The Harvey Cup at Harvey Field in Snohomish. With more than 80 teams competing, our boys played a strong and soggy tournament. With 3 games Saturday and 3 games Sunday, the 3/4th-grade team came in as champions of the “Silver Cup” bracket, doing the West Side Proud! Our 7/8th-grade team came in second in the silver cup in a sudden-death overtime loss. Our 5/6th-grade team played well and learned a ton about teamwork and long days. Lacrosse is one of the fastest-growing sports in North America and the Southwest Lacrosse League will start up again next February. More info on our local lacrosse teams at www.Swlacrosseclub.org.

Two days before their first game as the DubSea Fish Sticks, collegiate baseball players from all over the country were at the stadium in Steve Cox Memorial Park today for practice. It’s the team’s home stadium for the summer, and the first game is Saturday night.
Today, the players were mostly wearing apparel from their college teams – but the brand-new Fish Sticks uniforms and hats were awaiting pickup:
This year’s roster features players from 30 different colleges, according to Fish Sticks general manager Justin Moser. He promises a trip to the park will get you more than baseball – they’re also offering food, beer, music, and “crazy promotions.”
The Fish Sticks will play 27 home games, including every Friday and Saturday from June 4th to July 31st. Single-ticket prices are $12 adults, $8 youth (12 and under), seniors, and military, or you can get discounted tickets in “flex packs” for three to 14 games. If you haven’t been to Steve Cox Memorial Stadium, it’s at 1321 SW 102nd. Opening-night game time is 6:35 pm Saturday vs. the Everett Merchants.

Another summer event that’s coming back for the first time since the last pre-pandemic summer is the kids’ fishing derby presented by the West Seattle Sportsmen’s Club. They’ll be at Seacrest (1660 Harbor SW) with a portable pond full of fish 8 am-11 am next Saturday (June 4th)> They bring the rods and bait too – all you have to bring is the kid(s), up to age 14. No fishing experience or pre-registration required. The club’s been presenting this free event since 1934.
A stellar season for the West Seattle High School baseball team ended this afternoon. The Wildcats finished as the state’s fourth-place 3A team after their final game in Pasco today, a 5-1 loss to Mt. Spokane. Before the state semifinals, WSHS – coached by Dylan Mclauchlin – had a 23-1 record, winning the Metro League championship.
West Seattle High School‘s baseball team had only one loss all season before tonight, when they lost in the state 3A semifinals, 3-1, to Mercer Island. Playing in Pasco, Wildcats ace Miles Gosztola held MI scoreless through five but had maxed out on pitches by then; Maddox Brent followed him on the mound, and MI eked out two runs in the sixth, subsequently keeping WSHS from a comeback. West Seattle, which made it to regional/state competition for the first time in eight years, will play Mt. Spokane tomorrow at 12:45 pm for third place.
If you play tennis at the Solstice Park courts (near the north end of Lincoln Park), you know they’ve been hit repeatedly by vandalism, particularly tagging. Chris just sent the photo and report of one person’s way of fighting back. Chris says the artist, James Egan, is a local attorney who told him he paints “to relieve stress.”

Delridge Playfield SouthJoin us for this one day Mixed Hat Tournament. We will have separate Middle School and High School divisions. All levels of ultimate players are welcome, from West Seattle as well as anyone willing to drive to our “island.” This is a great opportunity to meet other players and pick up some skills as you see them on the field.
A Hat Tournament is where players will be “randomly” placed on teams, and the team plays several games against the other teams at the tournament. Teams will be constructed so that there will be roughly even skills and gender ratios.
The fee is variable and will be donated to the DiscNW Youth Development fund. Tiers are $20/$10/Free.

Congratulations to the HSA Select G07 soccer team, the Washington State U15 Division 1 President’s Cup champions this year, which means they’re heading to Arizona to compete in regionals – with community assistance. The photo and information are from parent Krista McInerney, who explains:
This is kind of a rare occurrence, as they were competing against premier-level teams in a division they’d never experienced before. The team is made up of players who live in West Seattle, White Center, Burien, and Normandy Park. Players on this team attend Madison MS, West Seattle High School, Chief Sealth International High School, Summit Atlas, Vashon High School, and Highline schools. Champions at the Arizona tournament move on to national competition in North Carolina in July.

ADDED 10:03 PM: The celebration followed a tense final inning in the Wildcats’ game against Walla Walla.
Senior Felix Schlede started on the mound for WSHS, and the game was scoreless until the 4th inning.
Then Walla Walla went on a 4-0 run. But West Seattle refused to let the runs go unanswered, and broke its own scoring drought in the bottom of the 4th, starting with 2 RBIs by #5. senior Nick Hazlegrove. The score was tied at 4-4 before the inning was out.
The Wildcats added two more runs in the fifth, but then the Blue Devils tried a comeback, scoring 1 run in the top of the sixth, bringing the score to 6-5, too close for comfort, and then loading the bases in the top of the seventh, but Wildcats reliever Maddox Brent got out of the jam, and WSHS got the trip to state.
Hazlegrove was chosen Player of the Game.
The Wildcats, 24-1 in Dylan Mclauchlin‘s first season as head coach, are now in the state’s final four, and they’ll play Mercer Island at 7 pm Friday (May 27th) at Gesa Stadium in Pasco. The last WSHS appearance in regional/state competition was 2014.

A strong season for the West Seattle High School softball team ended this afternoon at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex with a district-playoffs loss to Bishop Blanchet.
Blanchet took the lead in the first inning and built it to 10-0 before the Wildcats scored runs in the 5th and 6th innings, with the final score 11-2.

As the West Seattle High School baseball team heads into regional/state play, star pitcher Miles Gosztola has just won a new honor – Metro League MVP. The junior’s season stats: 10 hits given up in 55 innings pitched, 107 strikeouts, an earned-run average of .126, and a batting-average-against of .057. The next playoff game for WSHS is tomorrow (Saturday, May 21st) at 10 am, Bannerwood Park in Bellevue (1790 Richards Road), vs. Stanwood. If they win, they’ll play there again later in the day, time and opponent TBD.
The West Seattle High School softball team has one more chance in the district playoffs after a tough loss today at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex. Their game against Lake Washington HS ended in the fourth inning after the Kangaroos ran up a 15-0 lead.
Shortstop Lina Delgado (above with pitcher Paige Delaney) got the Wildcats’ only hit. WSHS plays Bishop Blanchet tomorrow (Friday, May 20th) at 1:30 pm at NCSWAC (2801 SW Thistle) in a loser-out game; winner plays again at 5:30 pm, with a state-tournament berth at stake.

District softball playoffs continued at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex today, with West Seattle High School and Chief Sealth International High School in a must-win mid-afternoon game.

WS got off to a fast start, putting up five runs in two innings, while Sealth brought in three, and kept working on a comeback, bringing the score to 5-4 after three innings. That’s when CS stalled out, with only one other run coming in the 7th, but by then WS had pulled way shead after putting up 7 runs in the middle innings.

Final score was West Seattle 12, Chief Sealth 5. The Wildcats advance in districts and will play Lake Washington at 3:30 pm Thursday (May 19th) at NCSWAC (2801 SW Thistle).

On Friday, we previewed 20-year-old West Seattle-based ultra-runner Riley Nachtrieb‘s plan to run the Olympic Discovery Trail, which she last attempted in 2019, forced to stop two-thirds of the way along the 132-mile trail because of an injury. She started early Saturday morning and this time, made it all the way – 41 hours, according to her Instagram updates. Supporters dropped in from checkpoints along the way:

Sun’s out, sky’s clearing, yes, summer really is approaching. So it’s a great day to jump into the 5K obstacle-course-and-more Loop the ‘Lupe:
IT’S TIME TO GET IN THE LOOP: Race Director Brian Callanan has a friendly reminder about signing up for Loop the ‘Lupe, Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual obstacle-course 5K, which is happening June 4th at Walt Hundley Playfield.
You can register right up through race day, but with the order for t-shirts going TODAY, participants are invited to sign up as soon as possible!
The Loop, now in its sixth year, will feature its traditional four events: the 5K obstacle course, the 5K run/walk, the Youth Dash (1K, kids 8 and younger with parental supervision) and the Senior Saunter (a flat, 20-minute timed walk). There are prizes from Avalon Glassworks, City Sweats, RowHouse, Peel & Press, and more for top finishers and Best Costume/Team Name. New this year: all entrants will receive a participation medal (see it at right) along with their tech race t-shirts.
The first event for the Loop kicks off at 11 a.m. on 6/4, and participants are invited to stick around for live music from West Seattle School of Rock, a BBQ, and a beer garden (21+) sponsored by Georgetown Brewing. Go here to register!

SATURDAY NIGHT REPORT: Their record led the league, and now their final tournament win cements the championship. Tonight at Steve Cox Memorial Park in White Center, the West Seattle High School baseball team beat Eastside Catholic, 3-1, for the Metro League title. Miles Gosztola got the win for the Wildcats, striking out 10 while allowing only one run and one hit. West Seattle’s Jaxton Helmstetler was the hitting leader, going two for three, and teammate Jake Lockwood got a home run. Now WSHS moves on to the next level of postseason play; we’re awaiting word on where, when, and who they play next.
SUNDAY NIGHT UPDATE: The Wildcats will play next Saturday (May 21st), at Bannerwood Park in Bellevue, time TBD, vs. the winner of a Tuesday game between Stanwood and Kelso.
The Chief Sealth IHS and West Seattle HS softball teams played two games apiece again Friday at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex in the Metro League playoffs. The Seahawks won both their games, 23-18 over Eastside Catholic and 18-3 over Garfield; the Wildcats lost to Garfield 8-5 and then beat Eastside Catholic 11-7. If we’re reading the district-tournament bracket correctly, looks like the crosstown competitors play each other on Tuesday (May 17th), again at NCSWAC, 3;30 pm.
