UPDATE: Fire at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene

2:11 PM: Seattle Fire is heading to a report of a possible fire at West Seattle Church of the Nazarene (42nd and Juneau).

2:14 PM: First crews on scene report “a little smoke.” Everyone is reported to be out of the church.

2:20 PM: “Heavy smoke and a small amount of fire” is reported by firefighters in the upper story of the church building. … Fire is declared under control.

2:24 PM: They’re now telling dispatch the fire was contained to one room and it’s “tapped” (out). Adding photos from our crew on the scene. … No report, so far, of injuries. The church has undergone major remodeling in recent years, funded by proceeds from selling part of its large original lot for housing development, while retaining open space known as an unofficial park.

2:35 PM: We talked to pastor Shaun Mattson, who confirms there’s an apartment on the top floor but says its residents weren’t home when the fire started; some people were in the church for a post-service get-together when they smelled smoke, called 911, and got out – he confirms no one’s hurt. SFD’s fire investigator is on the way.

5:46 PM: We followed up to see what the investigation found. SFD spokesperson Hilton Almond says, “Our fire investigators have determined the fire to be accidental due to a candle.” Damage estimate – $120,000.

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Snow aftermath, and more expected

|    Comments Off on WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Snow aftermath, and more expected
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle weather

Though the snow we got early this morning – covered here – wasn’t deep, it was wet, so you might find post-snow problems today such as that fallen tree branch near 50th/Dakota. (Thanks to Nancy for the photo.) While the snow has stopped for now, and the “winter weather” alert has expired, the National Weather Service warns that snow showers are possible at times during much of the week ahead. For now, though, the sun is emerging, and the streets that got an overnight coat of snow are now just wet/slushy. The meltoff should continue with a high forecast in the 40s. Meantime, we’ve had one calendar-event cancellation so far today – the vaccination pop-up at OLG – and we’ll continue updating the daily preview with any other changes we find out about.

UPDATE: 1 to hospital after RV fire on Harbor Avenue

7:19 AM: SFD crews are responding to what the first on scene are describing as “a single RV fire with a trailer full of pallets” at Harbor Avenue/Harbor Lane. Harbor is closed both ways.

(Added: Reader photo)

7:25 AM: Firefighters have told dispatch the fire is under control. (Added: This Twitter video shows part of the response.) They have also just reported finding one person, described as “badly burned,” about 100 feet away. They’re calling for a medic unit.

(Added: Reader photo)

7:50 AM: The SFD fire investigator is now being sent, and firefighters just told dispatch the fire’s out. As reported here, all RVs on Harbor Avenue were gone by midmorning (corrected) Thursday, the date announced for a city “remediation”; in comments on that story, it was noted that an RV and truck full of pallets had returned yesterday.

8:05 AM: The injured person is being taken to Harborview Medical Center.

8:11 AM: The southbound side of Harbor is reopening.

11:32 AM: SFD spokesperson Hilton Almond says the burn victim, a 41-year-old man, was in serious condition when transported, and that their investigators ruled the fire was accidental.

12:33 PM: We asked on followup for a specific cause. Reply: “A propane heater.”

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Snow arrives

(Newest images from ‘live’ SDOT cameras, above and below)

1:04 AM: After rain and wind, we’re noting that the weather has transitioned to snow. Definitely the wet snow the National Weather Service had predicted (in its Winter Weather Advisory), though, because it’s audible. The temperature has dropped steeply, too – 39 two hours ago at Boeing Field, 32 now.

1:22 AM: City crews are out – we’ve heard one of the trucks rattling past the nearest two-arterial corner.

Here’s the map you can check to see what’s been plowed/treated.

Here’s the map with citywide traffic cams.

Here’s the page with our breakout of West Seattle (and vicinity) cameras.

1:51 AM: Crash reported on the westbound West Seattle Bridge near the Delridge offramp.

2:53 AM: David just texted this photo of his snowy yard at 44th and Charlestown:

3:25 AM: Though city crews are out, cameras still show snow on arterials – and we have this pic of 47th/Admiral from CW:

The forecast still calls for this all to end later this morning, so crews will eventually catch up with the main roads/highways. It’s dangerous right now, though – on southbound I-5 at Holgate, responders are at the scene of a crash in which SFD says two people have been killed.

3:53 AM: SFD just ordered all units to chain up.

7:15 AM: The snow has stopped in the past few hours and the melt-off is audible.

BASKETBALL: West Seattle HS boys’ season ends with state-tournament loss

Congratulations to the West Seattle High School boys’ basketball team for their strong season, which ended tonight at Bellevue College.

(WSB photos by Patrick Sand)

In their first game of this year’s state tournament, the Wildcats fell to North Thurston, 51-34. Half their points came in the final quarter, but they started connecting too late, including this defiant dunk by #23, sophomore Alex Pierce:

The struggle started early – WSHS didn’t get on the scoreboard until a basket by #2, senior Maximus Holliman, more than midway through the first quarter.

He had eight points on the night, as did #5, senior Ryder Mackay:

The Wildcats never did manage to consistently break through North Thurston’s defense, which meant they had to do a lot of outside shooting, without much success, though #3, junior Bo Gionet, got two 3s:

The WSHS boys finished the season 14-12.

CRIME WATCH: Seen this Airstream? (update: found)

4:47 PM SATURDAY: The photo and report are from Jessica:

I’m the manager at Loretta’s in South Park. We are a bar which happens to have a great burger. We had a signature vintage airstream in the back of the bar for years, and had moved it off premises to another location, still in South Park. Last night 2/24 it was stolen from us … we deeply loved her and want her back. She can be recognized by the many stickers she has on her door.

The SPD incident number is 23-053690.

12:42 PM SUNDAY: We heard a brief police-radio mention about a found stolen Airstream, and confirmed with Jessica that this one has been found.

WEST SEATTLE SCENE: The Original Bakery’s final weekend

Thanks to Susan for the photo from early this morning, as the line for The Original Bakery‘s final Friday (applesauce donuts!) stretched down the block, well past its storefront at 9253 45th SW. We also heard tonight from Kay, who suggested reminding people to get there early if planning on one last trip this weekend. Sunday is the bakery’s final day of operations, as first reported here three and a half weeks ago. Bakery proprietor Bernie Alonzo is retiring after almost 50 years; the parent company of neighboring Endolyne Joe’s, CHOW Foods, is taking over the space. The bakery will be open 7:30 am-3 pm Saturday and Sunday (unless everything sells out early).

Spring Egg Hunt helper search, Food Fest plans, more from Fauntleroy Community Association

Two big events are ahead for the Fauntleroy Community Association, as discussed at the FCA board’s February meeting. One is open right now for helpers to join in – here’s the announcement, for both volunteers and participants:

The Fauntleroy Community Association is presenting its 2023 Spring Egg Hunt on April 1 from 1:00 to 4:00 at the Fauntleroy Schoolhouse. To have it on one day at one location is a new – and better, we think – format.

All are welcome, so bring the kiddies and baskets to collect eggs with treats inside. This is a no-candy event. When finding the eggs, post your photos on social media with a tag #FCAEggHunt. Any plastic eggs that you cannot reuse may be dropped off at the booth out front that day or returned later to the schoolhouse.

We need volunteers to come and have fun at a stuffing party or to hide eggs that day. Call or email Candace Blue, at 209-401-8406 or leeblue2@hotmail.com.

FCA is also preparing for next month’s Food Fest, the annual membership meeting, held at The Hall at Fauntleroy (9131 California SW), 6-8 pm Tuesday, March 21st. FCA’s David Haggerty told the board that planning is going well – some local eateries have signed up to provide bites for attendees and he’s working on a few more. He’s also lining up community organizations and agencies to be there. If you live and/or work in Fauntleroy, make plans to be there.

This month’s meeting included a few other discussion topics. Operations Lt. Dorothy Kim was there from the Southwest Precinct, to which FCA had expressed concerns about enforcement of the RPZ now that vehicles are no longer getting permits to display, but instead just having plates registered, meaning that unless you’re an officer with a license-plate reader, you can’t tell the difference between authorized and unauthorized vehicles. There’s no real solution for now, as Parking Enforcement Officers currently aren’t on duty overnight, which is when the RPZ’s “permit-required” hours fall.

FCA’s Catherine Bailey, leading the meeting, also noted that the group had yet to hear back from SDOT on followthrough from the December walkaround with director Greg Spotts.

The Fauntleroy Community Association board meets second Tuesdays at 7 pm, with community members welcome to attend, in-person at the schoolhouse or online (info at fauntleroy.net).

In case you wondered too: More digging for West Seattle light-rail planning

Thanks for the tips/questions/photos! Work crews like the one above near 40th/Oregon in The Junction are out doing more environmental testing for Sound Transit light-rail planning. ST says nearby residents should have all received explanatory flyers, but if you didn’t, here’s the one for 40th/Oregon, and here’s the one for 37th/Fauntleroy. In both cases, crews are boring holes for monitoring water levels in the ground – according to the flyers, “Crews will monitor water levels by visiting these sites about every few months to take measurements throughout final design of the project.” ST is continuing to work toward publishing the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the West Seattle routing/station locations later this year.

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Beautiful today, snow possibilities this weekend

Chilly but beautiful today – snow-coated mountains in view in all directions. Now that the afternoon forecast updates are in, we’re checking on the latest prospects for weekend snow down here.

The National Weather Service‘s “forecast discussion” says Saturday night brings the first possibility, but it’s not a sure thing – “the most likely scenario for most of the area is an inch or less of new snow.” That includes us here in the city. Then on Sunday night, the NWS says, “Snow levels look to fall to close to sea level again Sunday night as a surface low associated with the upper low switches low level flow back to northerly. It does not look to be a widespread lowland snow event but local accumulations cannot be ruled out.” With an unsettled week ahead, that might not be the last chance, so while it’s too soon to get excited/worried, be ready.

ADDED EARLY SATURDAY: The late-night version of the “forecast discussion” still predicts some snow Saturday night/early Sunday: “Lowland snow is now expected during this time, but there is a lot of uncertainty with respect to how much.” Watch here for alerts.

Got a nonprofit that needs a van? King County might be able to help

From King County Councilmember Joe McDermott‘s newsletter:

Last week, we launched the 2023 Van Grant Program. Every year, the Council allocates retired passenger vans to nonprofit organizations and local governments. These vans must be used to transport people with special needs or to transport goods and services to those with special needs. These include seniors, low-income, youth, or people with disabilities. This year, the requirements differ slightly from previous years in that the vans can now be used for the transport of goods and supplies to special-needs groups. If you are part of an organization in District 8 or know of an organization in District 8 that meets these requirements, please reach out to Helen Dahl (helen.dahl@kingcounty.gov) on my staff. The deadline for van applications through the District 8 office is Monday, March 13th at 5 pm.

P.S. For some background on the program, see this report on its first 20 years.

Remembering Daniel C. Wiseman, 1953-2023

Family and friends are remembering Daniel C. Wiseman, and sharing this remembrance with his community:

Daniel Calvin Wiseman
April 2, 1953 – February 17, 2023

Daniel C. Wiseman passed away peacefully on February 17, 2023, in West Seattle after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Dan was born in Madison, South Dakota, on April 2, 1953, to parents Austin ‘Cal’ and Joyce Wiseman. He was the second oldest in a family of six children. When Dan was just four months old, the young family moved to Seattle. Dan graduated from Evergreen High School in 1971 and attended South Seattle College.

Dan grew up working in the family business, learning the trade from his parents. He eventually purchased the still-operating Wiseman Appliance of West Seattle’s Admiral District in 1981. As the owner of Wiseman Appliance, he was a valued member of the Nationwide West Marketing Group. He belonged to the group so that he could bring more value to his customers. He also served as a long-time member of the board. Dan was very generous with his time, talent, and philanthropic donations to the West Seattle Community he loved. Dan was a past chairman of the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce, West Seattle Anti-Crime Council, and the Mayor’s Small Business Task Force. He was past president of the West Seattle Jaycees and his condominium’s HOA board. He received the Mayor’s Small Business Award in 1994.

Dan loved to play golf, travel to Alaska for fishing trips, travel the world, and make frequent trips to Las Vegas with his good friends. Dan loved gatherings with family and friends, and taking in the ever-changing views from his Alki condo. He will be dearly missed by his family, friends, and loved ones.

Dan was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by daughter Christina (Philip) Larsen and their daughter Brooklyn of Sammamish. He is also survived by his five siblings: Paula (Billy) Small of Renton, and brothers Stephen of Kirkland, Craig of Shelton, Scott (Theresa) of Seattle, and Mark of Des Moines. In addition, he is survived by his many nieces, nephews, and cousins, and his longtime companion Dolores Smith.

The family wishes to thank the staff at Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center for their care and support.

Arrangements entrusted to Emmick Family Funeral Home. Please share your memories of Dan at: emmickfunerals.com/obituary/Daniel-Wiseman. The site will also list the date and other details of the upcoming celebration of his life.
