11:47 AM: Tonight is the second Thursday of the month, and that would usually mean West Seattle Art Walk night, at venues all over the peninsula. Though in-person events are still out of the question, the Art Walk team has put together a virtual version for you to enjoy! Here’s the lineup, via the Art Walk website. Organizers explain:

We are excited to feature 40 (!!!) artists, double our regular number, and many of whom haven’t yet had the chance to exhibit at Art Walk. The post is set up like a virtual gallery space, with each artist providing up to 10 images, whether they are hosted by a business or “freelance” / artist-led.

All art is for sale, as for any other Art Walk. If you are interested, just contact the business if listed, or the artist if not.

At 5 pm, we will drop a video playlist of a selection of artists on our Facebook page, so it will be a little bit more like a real walk around!

Thank you for your support of the arts, even in a time of discomfit!

ADDED 5:55 PM: Here’s the video playlists!

WSB is an Art Walk co-sponsor.

Thursday night, dozens of local venues await your visit during the November West Seattle Art Walk:

That’s the updated map and venue list. Stars mark where you’ll find art; dots mark where you’ll find food/beverage specials for Art Walk’ers; some, you’ll note, have both. Wondering about the art you’ll see? Art Walk organizers spotlight some of the highlights here – starting with a pop-up at 4526 42nd SW, the little house sandwiched between some big buildings (you’ll know it soon as you see the picture). Other venue previews include WSB sponsors Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW) with paintings by Tatyana Brown, Canna West Culture Shop (5435 California SW) with visual art by Ben Calhoun, Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW) with drip paintings by Whitney LaRene, and Click! 5:56 PM: As previewed on our “West Seattle Thursday” list, tonight’s edition of the West Seattle Art Walk is a big one! Above, that’s artist Lezlie Jane at a new WSAW venue – Brace Point Pottery in Arbor Heights (4208 SW 100th). She is known for so much public art, but this is her first solo show of paintings! You can meet her at the gallery until 8 pm. Much more coverage to come!

6:12 PM: More paintings – this time at Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW) in The Junction, with co-proprietor Frances Smersh. As explained on the Click! website:

Both her jewelry and her paintings have long been defined by organic forms and color. While we still carry a collection of Frances’ jewelry in-store, painting and drawing have become her primary creative outlet. As her young-onset Alzheimer’s Disease has progressed her paintings have become increasingly abstract. This show includes acrylic works on wood panels, ink on paper, and watercolor, which she has recently discovered a fondness for.

Her reception is continuing until 8 pm too.

Also in The Junction, until 7:40 pm, stop in at John L. Scott (4555 California SW) to enjoy the third Art of Music performance, this time featuring the Nathan & Roz Duo:

And at 7 pm, the Mural Alley dedication is happening on the east-side midblock in the 4700 block of California SW.

VIDEO, PHOTOS: West Seattle Summer Fest Eve and July Art Walk!

6:34 PM: The barricades are up and the fun is on. The streets in the heart of The Junction have just closed so West Seattle Summer Fest setup can begin – along with sidewalk cafés, entertainment, and middle-of-the-street strolling between West Seattle Art Walk venues, like Click! Design That Fits (4540 California; WSB sponsor):

Brooke Westlund is at Click! until 8. Full list of Art Walk venues, with previews, is here, or just come to The Junction and start wandering. On California just south of Alaska, Bubbleman‘s performance is about to start. Updates to come!

7:20 PM: Bubbleman is just wrapping up.

What a crowd! He clowned around with an umbrella before even starting with the bubbles, and the countless children on hand were delighted. (“He’s so FUNNY!” one told her grownups.) Yes, all the while, setup is happening too:

The first sidewalk sale is in progress outside Pegasus Book Exchange. And steps away, the Dance Powered fitness “flash mob” just started.

Around 8 pm (later than earlier noted), the VAIN (WSB sponsor)/Lika Love Boutique hair-and-fashion show should be unfolding a little further north. And here’s the night’s official motto:

That’s in the window at Click! (do stop in and meet Brooke the artist).

9:13 PM: We’ve left The Junction after three hours. A few more Summer Fest Eve scenes:

VAIN has a lot going on for the festival, by the way, including a big bright paper-flowers selfie backdrop and “in-store and sidewalk specials including a blow-out sunglasses sale!” (Added) Victoria from VAIN with a paper flower, hinting at things to come:

On the same block, Yada Yada Blues Band had an all-ages crowd in a bluesy mood:

Revelry – and setup – continues into the night. (And we have a bit more to add above now that we’re back at HQ.) Official festival hours Friday are 10 am-8 pm, with main-stage music running later. We’re in the Info Booth again this year – see you at Summer Fest!

SUMMER FEST EVE: Art! Fashion! Bubbles! And more, Thursday night in The Junction

You can help give the West Seattle Art Walk a soundtrack – by donating to a new crowdfunding campaign. The announcement:

FUNDING MUSIC IN THE WEST SEATTLE JUNCTION.

The West Seattle Junction Association is planning a series of 5 musical performances — dubbed The Art of Music — that will take place in the West Seattle Junction on Second Thursday Art Walk evenings in the West Seattle Junction during August, September, October, November, and December. Efforts are underway to raise funds to make it possible for scheduled musicians to be paid for sharing their musical talents.

The Art of Music performances will complement the opportunity to view art on those evenings in addition to providing entertainment for those in the Junction for dining, shopping or just to be entertained. Individuals willing to help support this project with a donation are invited to visit the crowdfunding page set up here.

We’re told two of the performances would be outdoors, three indoors.

Also on Thursday, you’re invited to HomeStreet Bank (4022 SW Alaska; WSB sponsor), where you can get in the mood for the West Seattle Garden Tour (June 23rd) by enjoying the art created for this year’s contest – plus, we’re told, “some additional works.” You are welcome to stop by the bank (which has plenty of parking) 5-7:15 pm Thursday, and help HomeStreet support the Garden Tour.

Another stop of interest: It’s the last Art Walk at Wallflower Custom Framing (4735 42nd SW), which is closing soon. Wallflower will feature a retrospective by Jessica Creager. A closing sale is under way, too.

For other highlights, here’s a roundup on the Art Walk website.

PHOTOS, VIDEO: West Seattle Art Walk, 2018 holiday edition, and Shop Late Thursday

6:35 PM:Sweet Christmastime,” to the tune of “Sweet Caroline,” is what the Silver Belles were singing when we found them in The Junction, where they’re scheduled to roam until about 8 pm, in honor of both Shop Late Thursday and the holiday West Seattle Art Walk.

Some of the shopping and art-admiring you can do is in the breezeway on the west side of the 4700 block of California:

Artist Stacey Sterling is there – she worked with community members to create a mural during last July’s West Seattle Summer Fest, and a short ceremony just officially commemmorated its placement in the breezeway. (More on that in a separate story tomorrow.)

6:46 PM: Photographer Karen Mason Blair is at Easy Street Records until about 8 pm, signing her book “Loud Love”:

Her photography, including Northwest rock icons of the ’90s, is on display at Easy Street all month long.

6:57 PM: Live painting – here’s Patrick Woods at Wallflower Custom Framing (4735 42nd SW):

7:58 PM: Back in The Junction, Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor) is open until 9 tonight.

We asked co-proprietor John Smersh what’s hot so far this holiday-gift season. Handmade jewelry! They have an expanded selection, with two more local artists in the house tonight. One thing you can also count on Click! for – local-themed items:

And hey – we found Santa:

He’ll be back in The Junction tomorrow afternoon, for photos at HomeStreet Bank (41st/Alaska; WSB sponsor), 3-6 pm.

8:32 PM: We also stopped at CAPERS, hosting the second annual Abstract Invitational, including works by these artists:

One more Shop Late Thursday before Christmas. Two weekends, too! Lots of local independent retailers, in The Junction and beyond.
