The last West Seattle Art Walk of summer had musical highlights again tonight – two performers for The Art of Music, curated by John Redenbaugh. We got short clips of both – above, Taylor John Hardin outside WEND Jewelry in South Admiral; below, Trevor Ras at KeyBank Plaza in The Junction:

West Seattle Art Walk – with or without music – happens every second Thursday, so set your calendar for the next one, October 13th.

UPDATE: August’s West Seattle Art Walk, with music

5:22 PM: We didn’t get a chance to publish an event list today – but it’s time now to get out and enjoy the night’s biggest event, this month’s West Seattle Art Walk. Here’s the venue list:

And here’s the list of restaurants/bars offering food/drink specials for Art Walk-ers:

To see who’s hosting artists, and who’s where, scroll through this month’s update on the official Art Walk website. For places staying open late and/or having artist receptions, hours will vary but most generally run until about 8 pm. Tonight also features two live performances for The Art of Music, 6-7:45 pm in The Junction and Admiral – here are the details on those. We’re headed out soon to make some stops and will add updates!

ADDED 6:22 PM: At Mystery Made in The Junction, you can create art:

Buy a T-shirt and tie-dye it outside!

ADDED 6:50 PM: We stopped at California/Alaska to enjoy the music:

ADDED 7:20 PM: At Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor), Rodolfo Rios Garza is tonight’s featured artist, with work focusing on trees:

ADDED 7:35 PM: One more stop for us – Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor) is hosting photographer Julija Naskova, who’s showing images of Buddhist temples in Asia:

Even if you didn’t get out tonight, many businesses keep the art up throughout the month, so you can still see it – and in many cases, the artwork is for sale, too. Art Walk is always the second Thursday, so next one is September 15th.

6:30 PM: If it’s on the Easy Street marquee, it’s happening – and the heart of The Junction is now indeed the hub of activity to get ready for West Seattle Summer Fest, first one since 2019. So people are here walking in the now-closed streets. There’s music too:

Naby Camera is playing until 7:40 pm at KeyBank Plaza (California/Alaska, SW corner) as part of The Art of Music, complementing tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. More on the art in a moment. First – look for orcas on the west side of California, midblock between Alaska and Edmunds:

That’s where you’ll find Donna Sandstrom from The Whale Trail tonight and all weekend – kids can get a scavenger-hunt card to follow The Whale Trail all around The Junction through the festival (explained here) in celebration of Springer’s rescue. (FRIDAY UPDATE: Come get maps at the Info Booth Fri-Sun.) Back to the Art Walk – one of the places you can visit in The Junction is Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor), having a group show with store-alum artists tonight:

(Read about the Click! show here.) More from the Art Walk – venue list/previews here – and festival preps shortly.

Reminder, California SW is now closed between Genesee and Edmunds (with Oregon left open to through traffic) and SW Alaska is closed between 44th and 42nd for Summer Fest setup (here’s bus-reroute info) – here’s a live SDOT cam:

The festival starts at 1 pm Friday.

7:20 PM: At John L. Scott Real Estqte on the west side of California just north of Oregon, one amazing show decks the walls throughout the office:

Bob Willoughby photographed many Hollywood stars in the classic era’s heyday. See them tonight, with his son Christopher Willoughby and widow Dorothy there to answer questions, until about 9 pm.

ADDED 8:32 PM: More artists we stopped in to see – Sonya Rupnick at Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor):

Dan Rosen at Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor):

Many artists’ work is displayed at the businesses all month long, so if you didn’t get out tonight, check out the venues some other time. Meantime, we have one more Art of Music scene – harpist Alyvia Miller played at Welcome Road Winery in South Admiral (thanks to linda McKelvey for the photo):

During Summer Fest, main-stage music is scheduled 3 pm-10 pm Friday, noon-10 pm Saturday – and stage setup was the first thing to happen as street closures began this afternoon:

See the music schedule here. We’ll see you at Summer Fest – starting at 1 pm Friday!

COUNTDOWN: One week until West Seattle Summer Fest Eve

We’re now looking ahead daily/nightly to the return of West Seattle’s biggest party of the year, Summer Fest. While official festival dates are Friday-Sunday, July 15-17, the night before has taken on a life of its own, with people enjoying wandering the Junction streets closed for festival setup. As with most years, this year Summer Fest Eve (Thursday, July 14th) is also the monthly second Thursday West Seattle Art Walk night. You can see the list of participating businesses/venues and some early previews on the Art Walk website. The Art of Music is back, with two performances on Art Walk night, one that will be outdoors in The Junction and in the heart of Summer Fest Eve – awardwinning West African musician Naby Camera will be playing 6-7:45 pm at KeyBank Plaza.

While wandering The Junction on Summer Fest Eve, you can also expect to see and hear buskers, and look for a chance to get creative with chalk art! You can also visit Mural Alley – the midblock breezeway on the west side of California SW between SW Alaska and SW Edmunds – to see the community murals from Summer Fest 2018 and 2019, and get inspired to join artist Stacey Sterling in creating one this year (Friday and Saturday).

A highlight of years past has been food/drink venues setting up temporary sidewalk cafés; this year, some are already in place, so you can dine/drink outdoor, Or just wander! We’ll see you in the street (California between Genesee and Edmundsm Alaska between 42nd and 44th) one week from tonight.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK SCENE: ‘Sky’ by the bay

From the northernmost stop on tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk:

Androu Morgan and Barbara Fugate are two of the artists whose works are featured in “Sky,” the display at Lake Washington Physical Therapy-West Seattle (1309 Harbor SW); LWPT co-owner Mark Bouma sent the photo. Barbara also curated “Sky,” described as “a collection of seven artists’ interpretation of the sky.” It’s an apt subject for LWPT, whose light-filled clinic is across the street from the shore of Elliott Bay, with a view of sky as well as sea. LWPT co-owner Laura Bouma tells us an upcoming exhibit at the clinic will focus on flowers.

WEST SEATTLE ART WALK SCENE: Students in the spotlight

Even if you didn’t get out to enjoy tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk, you can enjoy art at local businesses all month long. At West Seattle Grounds (2141 California SW), work by West Seattle High School students is on display. After a busy afternoon of breaking news, we arrived just after their reception wrapped up – but we caught up with one of the artists, WSHS junior Esme Jablonsky, who works with “any and every medium I can get my hands on”:

Esme and the other featured artists are all in the WSHS Drawing and Painting program, part of the school’s Visual Arts offerings. A note up with the display at West Seattle Grounds mentions that the program always welcomes donations of art supplies, from watercolor paper and canvas to “analog darkroom equipment/film cameras” for the photography students – donations can be dropped off at the main office (3000 California SW) during school hours.

THURSDAY: West Seattle Art Walk, May edition!

Tomorrow night (Thursday, May 12th), you’re invited to get out to explore and enjoy local art, during the May edition of the West Seattle Art Walk. Above is this quarter’s list of venues – both those hosting art and those offering food/drink specials to people who are out and about on Art Walk night. For specifics – like artists, receptions, hours – you can check this month’s preview on the WSAW website. One highlight: Lake Washington Physical Therapy (1309 Harbor Avenue SW; WSB sponsor) across from Don Armeni Boat Ramp is opening its doors for its quarterly Art Walk reception, spotlighting the group show “Sky” (previewed here) – stop in 7-8 pm to enjoy the art, and the view. Lots of other highlights from Admiral in the north to Arbor Heights in the south – browse the preview and make your Thursday night plan!

Our stops along April’s West Seattle Art Walk

We are out visiting some of tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk artist receptions:

Katie Dean is the featured artist at Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor; 4540 California SW), open until 8 pm.

(added) At Fogue Gallery (4150 California SW; WSB sponsor), you can meet several of the gallery’s featured artists. This month, we photographed Tom Costantini, whose memorable illustrations you’re sure to have seen:

Fogue is open tonight until 8-ish, Further south, artist Brandi Quinn is at Canna Culture Shop (5435 California SW), sibling shop across the street from Canna West Seattle (WSB sponsor) until 7 pm:

And we talked with artist Pam Hemmerling at Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor):

She creates both portraits and abstracts, highly textured, both tactile and visual. Of her portraits, she told us, she likes to include the subjects as they really are, imperfections and all – she also enjoys creating a portrait that reveals something new as you look more closely. Also at Viscon, we talked with proprietor/winemaker Ben Viscon, who recently released a new Merlot, and is expecting to release a new Rose in about a month. His tasting room is open until 9 tonight.

See tonight’s full list of venues and artist receptions here, where you’ll also find links to the featured artists, to find out more about their work.

WEST SEATTLE SCENES: Last WS Art Walk of winter

Still time to go out and meet artists during the March West Seattle Art Walk!

That’s Naomi Cox, who’s featured tonight – and all month – at West Seattle Grounds (2141 California SW), where you’ll find her until 8 tonight. She describes the work she’s showing as “using primarily watercolor and pen—loose and full of color. This show is a collection of some of my favorites—from walks, on drives, in the kitchen, and around Seattle—created as a set of art prints. I love it when my paintings brighten someone’s day, show a different perspective, invite a conversation, and help people connect to each other and their surroundings.”

Always a highlight on Art Walk night is Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor), with a variety of ongoing displays. Tonight’s featured artist is RobRoy Chalmers:

Also in The Junction, we recommend a stop at Doll Parts Collective (4448 California SW) – we got there too early to photograph featured artist Katharina Pritzl – but her work is fun to see, as is some of the quirky shop’s merchandise.

See the full venue list plus a multitude of artist previews on the Art Walk website, and look for Art Walk flags/banners outside participating venues; the three receptions we’ve mentioned above are all scheduled until 8 tonight.

This Thursday, we’ll still be a week and a half away from spring, but the weather should be good enough for you to plan on getting out for the West Seattle Art Walk!

That’s RobRoy Chalmers at Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor), where you can meet him at his reception during the Art Walk, 5 pm-8 pm. Fogue notes that his work has been shown worldwide – from Tokyo to Berlin to Boston and beyond. The gallery says he “brings dark implications hidden in whimsy and colorful imagery, fluid, sexy, dirty, messy, and always joyful. Featuring Charcoal, pastel and pencil on Rives BFK paper, mounted and custom framed.” Other Fogue Gallery artists will be there too – you’re invited to “sip champagne and enjoy the coming of spring!”

Here’s the venue list for this month’s Art Walk – some with artists, some with food and drink specials:

Venues are all over the peninsula – from North Admiral to South Delridge. In the latter, Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery (9441 Delridge Way SW) is featuring KAPOW!, “an artistic tribute to comics.” In The Junction, Jet City Labs (4546 California SW) is again featuring the Clay Cauldron collaboration pop-up. Those are just two of many. The official preview page for this month is still being updated, so check back before you go out exploring on Thursday night – times vary by venue.

Chris Baumgarten is a new guest artist at Fogue Gallery on the north edge of The Junction (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor), one of your potential stops on tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk. The artist is debuting a collection titled “Numbers” at Fogue, where you’ll find a variety of work. Stop by before 8 pm to meet her and browse everything on display. This month’s venue list/map is in the preview we published earlier this afternoon. Many venues – like Fogue, of course – show art all month, so the monthly Art Walk post is also a guide to where you can enjoy art in the days and weeks ahead, too.

TONIGHT: West Seattle Art Walk, January edition!

The weather has lifted just in time for the monthly West Seattle Art Walk. Here’s the map/venue list for tonight:

Art Walk participants include both venues with art and restaurants/bars with specials for Art Walk night. Times vary from site to site. Though The Junction remains a major hub, venues dot the peninsula, as previewed on the official WSAW website. On the north end, West Seattle Grounds (2141 California SW) will have painter Nida Ansari on hand tonight, 4-8 pm. Toward the south end, Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor) is hosting Priyanka Parmanand 5-9 pm. The artist explains, “I paint florals because they reinvigorate ‘Hope’, the fundamental belief for human existence. It is an expression of all that is different while unifying this diversity through a common denominator of human feelings. Plus, they are comforting, healing and bring smiles.” And on the north end of The Junction, you can visit Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor) 4-8 pm tonight to see a variety of artists’ work – new additions are featured here.

P.S. Before you head out to one or more of tonight’s Art Walk venues, check this version of the map/list for any word on late changes/cancellations.

6:29 PM: Been out on tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk yet? Artist receptions are happening all over the peninsula:

Jessie Summa Russo is tonight’s featured artist at Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor), where you can stop in until 9 pm. She explains:

My recent work is inspired by my life as a musician as well as the lives of my relatives. My grandfather was an Abstract Expressionist painter in the late ‘50s and early ‘60s, and I feel like his paintings both defined him and I understood him through them. My mother went to art school when I was a toddler; some of my earliest memories are of the printmaking studio with giant black press wheels taller than people.

And as we mentioned in our Wednesday preview, some stops tonight are hosting art markets, including Jet City Labs (upstairs at 4546 California SW):

It’s a collaboration with Clay Cauldron. Above are Misty and Anna, and some of Misty’s beach-glass (and more) art; below, Chas, with “melted-crayon art”:

And roaming The Junction, you just might find Santa:

Find tonight’s venue list – for art and/or food/drink specials – on the Art Walk website. (The Art of Music performances are happening until 7:40 pm, too – that info’s here.)

7:14 PM: We stopped for a little video of Jim Page playing at Great American Diner (4752 California SW):

And thanks to Eddie for this artist photo – Lorrie Brogan at Wild Rose’s (4529 California SW):

Her new paintings, a series titled “Ladies…All,” will be on display at Wild Rose’s all month.

Tomorrow night brings the last West Seattle Art Walk of the year – wrapped up with extra holiday fun. First, the list of participating venues:

Those holiday extras include Santa himself, strolling The Junction 6-9 pm, posing with you for selfies.

It’s also “Shop Late Thursday” in The Junction, and participating businesses will beckon you in with luminarias. You’ll also be able to shop two holiday markets at Junction businesses, according to Art Walk coordinator Reeve Washburn:

Jet City Labs + Clay Cauldron = Jet City Cauldron, at Jet City’s venue: 4546 1/2 California Ave SW (enter in the alley between California and 41st) and Bin 41: 4707 California Ave SW

Jet City: Jewelry, terrariums, photography, collage, paper goods, abstract art.

Bin 41: jewelry, photography, digital art on wood and acrylic, fused glass, and T’s creations! For our ‘gnome in the home’ fans, there will be a new stash available for purchase at the event!

Outside The Junction, the southernmost Art Walk venue Brace Point Pottery in Arbor Heights (4208 SW 100th) has extended their holiday sale – jewelry, custom clothing, ceramics, more.

One more extra tomorrow night – two more “Art of Music” live performances – both 6-7:40 pm: Jim Page at Great American Diner in The Junction, Veronica Malki at Copper Coin in The Admiral District.

Browse more venues and artists on the official preview page for tomorrow’s Art Walk, which starts at 5 pm and continues “until late.” (WSB is media sponsor for the WSAW.)

The West Seattle Art Walk is on! First stop, Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor):

4:23 PM: That’s artist Reeve Washburn at Click! – where the Jewelry Invitational and Small Works show is on until 7 pm. As Click! describes this year’s event:

This year’s annual Jewelry Invitational is a special one, for multiple reasons. For one thing, we’re expanding the scope to include other “Small Works,” not just wearable ones. What’s more, some of our featured jewelry is by Click! co-founder Frances Smersh. Made over the course of her 30-year career and pulled from the archives for a retrospective exhibition at her memorial this year, many pieces are available for the first time in decades.

Other venues don’t get going until 5 pm – the map/list/preview can be found on the Art Walk website.

5:35 PM: Also in The Junction – Dave Mampel is at Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor) until 8 pm:

His show is “Iconic Seattle: Various stylized impressionistic pieces of iconic Seattle locations and a few Van Gogh-inspired pieces.” The painting in our photo is “Moving Stillness.”

6:03 PM: If you favor animal art, go see Sonya Rupnick‘s work at Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor) “until late”:

She says of her work, “These paintings are little stories from a world where animals live a cozy, rural life, but one which is also sometimes unexpected and surprising. I try to portray them as living real, interesting lives, which we only see a portion of in each vignette. Each one has its own secret backstory.”

6:12 PM: Now through 7:40 pm, The Art of Music brings live performances to two venues – drop in for a minute or an hour! – details here.

Scenes from the first West Seattle Art Walk of fall

6:16 PM: Happening now from Alki to Arbor Heights – the October edition of West Seattle Art Walk!

Among the artists you can meet tonight: Painter Carla Dreams is at one of the brand-new WS Art Walk venues, the dental office of Dr. Michael Korn DDS (4401 California SW; WSB sponsor) in The Junction, until 8 pm.

At Fogue Gallery (4130 California SW; WSB sponsor), with a new group show, we found artist (and WSAW coordinator) Reeve Washburn:

We’re hoping to make at least one more stop. See who else is participating tonight – both businesses with art, and food/drink venues with specials – by going here. And don’t miss The Art of Music, at two venues, until 7:40 pm!

7:44 PM: We visited Verity Credit Union (4505 California SW; WSB sponsor) where singer-songwriter Larry Murante was performing as part of The Art of Music:

Set your calendar for next month’s Art Walk – November 11th!

West Seattle Art Walk history Thursday!

Thqt’s “A Little Prayer for Those Who Migrate,” by Jake Prendez of Nepantla Cultural Arts Gallery in South Delridge, the official poster for this fall’s West Seattle Art Walks. With the first of those Art Walks this Thursday night (October 14th), the WSAW makes history – with a record number of participating businesses (more than 50) and a record number of sponsoring partners (eight, plus WSB as media partner). West Seattle Art Walk coordinator Reeve Washburn notes, “This is a remarkable come-back from the dark days of the pandemic, where we went virtual for three months, then had only a small handful of businesses reopen to bring Art Lovers back together in the community. And it’s wonderful growth since the Art Walk’s restart in 2016, with nine businesses.”

One factor in the WSAW’s growth is the development of neighborhood hubs. The Art Walk is not just a “Junction thing” any more – the other Junctions – Admiral and Morgan – have blossoming participation, and the support of neighborhood groups (Morgan Community Association and Admiral Neighborhood Association). If you haven’t been out on Art Walk night, know that it’s not just about art – some venues also offer food and beverage specials to support the fun night out. Here’s the map/list for this quarter:

Washburn says the Art Walk has “had great turnout all summer,” which also has encouraged more businesses to join in. Some have artist receptions on Art Walk night; some have ongoing displays not only that night but all month long. You can find out more about featured artists each month in a detailed preview on the WSAW website – here’s the info for this month (including events’ specific times – most start at 5 pm but not all). Back to this quarter’s artist – you can see Prendez’s work not only at his own gallery but also at three other Art Walk venues this quarter – The Good Society on Thursday, Flying Apron in November and Hotwire Coffee in December.
