SCHOOLS: Out with the snow day, in with the remote day

Tomorrow is the last day before winter break for Seattle Public Schools and other schools that follow its schedule – no classes until Tuesday, January 3rd (as Monday, January 2nd will be the “observed” New Year’s Day holiday). Because of the September strike, the school year is already scheduled to end on the last day of June. In order to avoid the possibility of stretching into July, SPS announced this week that it’s gearing up for remote instruction in weather that otherwise would cancel classes for “snow days” (leading to makeup days after June 30th). Toward that end, the district is asking that all students bring home a district-issued device before break, in case of snow on what would be the first day back. It’s all explained here.

SPORTS: West Seattle Little League registration begins

Six days before the start of winter, a hint of spring to follow … it’s the first day of registration for West Seattle Little League. Here’s the announcement we were asked to share with you:

West Seattle Little League will offer Baseball, Softball, and Challenger programs; registration is now open!

West Seattle Little League Spring 2023 registration is now open for all youth ages 4-14.

Each year, we want to make sure all kids have the opportunity to write the next chapter in the Little League story, regardless of their situation. Thanks to the generous support of T-Mobile, financially challenged families in our community can apply for the T-Mobile Little League Call Up Grant, which helps cover registration fees associated with West Seattle Little League for the upcoming season! Little League and T-Mobile share the belief that every kid should have the chance to play ball.

The WSLL baseball and softball spring season will run from March – June and features fun activities like the jamboree, sandlot days, and end-of-the-year picnic. Interested to know more details? Check out westseattlelittleleague.com to find information about boundaries and divisions of play.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Thursday, with Seahawks

6:01 AM: Good morning! It’s Thursday, December 15th. If you’re heading through the stadium zone this afternoon/evening, remember that the Seahawks host the 49ers at 5:15 pm.

WEATHER

Sunshine forecast today, high in the low to mid-40s.

TODAY’S TRANSIT STATUS

Metro is still down buses for repairs – so watch notification channels such as @kcmetroalerts for trip cancellations and route suspensions.

-The West Seattle Water Taxi is down 2 boats again, so it’s reducing service as one boat handles both routes.

-WSF’s Triangle Route remains on its two-boat schedule- check here for alerts/updates.

CLOSURE ALERT

10 pm Friday night to 5 am Saturday morning, the Highway 99 tunnel is scheduled to close.

SPOTLIGHT CAMERAS

New Delridge cameras: As reported Saturday, three have been added; four more are on the way. Besides the one below (Delridge/Genesee), cameras are also up at Delridge/Oregon and Delridge/Orchard.

High Bridge – here’s the camera at the top.

High Bridge – the view from its southwest end (when SDOT points the 35th/Avalon/Fauntleroy camera that way).

Low Bridge: Or nearby, depending on where SDOT points the camera.

1st Ave. S. Bridge: The south route.

Highway 99: Here’s the northbound side at Lander.

All functional city traffic cams can be seen here, most with video options; West Seattle and vicinity-relevant cameras are also on this WSB page … Are movable city bridges opening for vessels? Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed.

If you see a problem on the roads/paths/water, please text or call us (when you can do so safely) – 206-293-6302.

WATER TAXI ALERT: Service reductions Thursday, with only one boat available for both routes

Metro‘s not only down buses – now it’s down another boat – Water Taxi service has lost a boat to propeller damage, again. The M/V Doc Maynard, recently repaired after damage last month, is out of service again, which led to one round-trip cancellation on each WT route this evening, and will bring more cuts tomorrow, as just announced:

The following trips from Downtown Seattle to West Seattle are canceled: in the morning – the 6:30 a.m., 7:05 a.m. – and in the evening, the 5:25 p.m. and 6:05 p.m.

The following trips from West Seattle to Downtown Seattle are canceled: in the morning 6:50 a.m. and 7:25 a.m., and in the evening 5:45 p.m. and 6:25 p.m.

Other scheduled trips will operate using one vessel serving both the West Seattle and Vashon routes. Visit our online schedules for the full West Seattle route sailing schedule. We apologize for the inconvenience and appreciate your patience.

Metro spokesperson Elaine Porterfield tells us M/V Sally Fox is still in a shipyard – after the first round of propeller damage to it and Doc Maynard – and unavailable, so that’s why they are handling both routes with one boat,

TONIGHT’S LIGHTS: Charlie Brown and friends are back in North Admiral

Another longrunning holiday display in West Seattle is back! Thanks to Don Rice for sending the photo to let us know his “Peanuts” display is up again this year at 2128 47th SW [map]. WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Two drugstores robbed

3:13 PM: Police are arriving at Bartell Drugs in Jefferson Square to investigate a reported robbery. According to what dispatch has told officers so far, the robber gave a clerk a note demanding cash and saying he had a gun, though none was seen, and got away with “cash from the pharmacy drawer.” The description so far is (updated) white, male, 5’7″, medium build, dark jacket over hoodie (“several layers on”), “knit cap with some yellow,” light pants. They’re not sure if he got away on foot or in a vehicle.

3:36 PM: Viewing security-camera images, police have also told dispatch the robber was wearing a mask and “blue plastic gloves.”

3:44 PM: Now police are headed to Rite-Aid at Westwood Village after a report of a similar holdup there, also with a robber handing a clerk a note claiming to have a gun. So far this robber is described as an “unknown-race male” in a blue mask, black sunglasses, black hoodie. Possible getaway vehicle: A black Subaru.

3:47 PM: Possible suspect is now being chased on foot a few blocks away. (added) They have one person in custody.

4:20 PM: Whether they have probable cause to arrest the person is still being determined. (We’ll be following up.)

4:38 PM: The associated vehicle – which “checked clear” (as in, not stolen), is being impounded.

ADDED THURSDAY AFTERNOON: We’ve finally confirmed that the person who was detained was not arrested, as witnesses from the robberies could not identify him, and there was no other evidence to establish probable cause at the time. (There are cases in which charges might be filed later as a result of further investigation.)

NEW YEAR’S EVE: Space Needle’s plan for welcoming 2023 – fireworks, lights, and drones

(January 1, 2019 photo by Robert Spears)

With a clear view from across the bay, the Space Needle‘s New Year’s Eve fireworks show is practically local for us, so here’s what was just announced: For one, if you’d rather be there in person than watching from here (or on a screen), they’re again going to allow a crowd to gather for viewing from beneath the Needle at Seattle Center. Second, they’re adding a drone light show this year. It’ll be produced by Sky Elements of Fort Worth, Texas. Here’s how the Space Needle’s announcement describes the plan:

The captivating formations — designed to integrate with the fireworks and light displays being launched and projected off of the Space Needle — will fly between 200 and 600 feet above ground, directly north of the tower. The coordinated drone effects will be best seen from the Seattle Center campus grounds. This won’t be the firm’s first show in the Emerald City; Sky Elements’ drones performed at T-Mobile Park following a Seattle Mariners game on July 22, 2022.

Before the midnight fireworks and drone light show, the Needle will stage “two musically-choreographed light shows” at 10 pm and 11 pm, produced by Illuminate Production Services; the 11 minutes of fireworks are by Pyro Spectaculars by Souza.

FOLLOWUP: Metro bus shortage, one week in

(Added image: Our inbox screen, filled with less than half-hour’s worth of Metro alerts since we published this story)

One week has passed since we first reported December 6th that Metro had taken 126 of its 1,500 buses out of service because of a steering “defect” discovered by drivers. (We reported the specific buses involved in this followup.) Metro was working with the manufacturer, New Flyer, to fix the defect. We asked Metro spokesperson Jeff Switzer how many have been returned to service so far: “We returned 3 affected New Flyer coaches to service using 3 new steering columns that were delivered by bus manufacturer New Flyer. We’re working closely with New Flyer on replacement parts and don’t yet have a timeline available.” In the meantime, trip cancellations, and in some cases temporary route suspensions, continue; the north West Seattle routes such as 56 and 57 have been particularly hard-hit. We asked Switzer why those routes and not some others with low ridership, for example, the 22. Here’s his explanation:

Routes 56 and 57 operate out of Central Base, where bus availability is temporarily limited; route 22 operates from South Base, which has more available buses. Routes 56 and 57 do have higher ridership than Route 22, but the majority of Route 56 and 57 riders have reasonable service alternatives. Route 56 riders are served by Route 50 and Route 128 connections to the C Line, or Route 775 to the West Seattle Water Taxi. Route 57 riders are served by Route 128 and the C Line, but there is a service gap in the Genesee Hill area south of SW Admiral Way and west of California Avenue Southwest. According to our ridership data, that route segment serves an average of 6-7 weekday riders. Route 22 is a lower ridership route, but also has limited service alternatives. The route provides unique connections to Chief Sealth High School and Southwest Community Center, and serves an equity priority community.

Metro says it’s currently operating 96 percent of its schedule, up from 90% shortly after the problem was disclosed.

UPDATE: South Seattle College staff member killed in parking lot incident

(WSB photo: TCIS detective and their vehicles at the scene, which is next to a white pickup truck just off screen left)

8:48 PM: Detectives from the Seattle Police Traffic Collision Investigation Squad are in the south lot at South Seattle College, investigating a fatal incident. Detective Valerie Carson tells us, “A deceased adult female was found pinned between a vehicle and the curb. Based on surveillance footage, it appears to be an accident. Not clear exactly how it happened but not deemed suspicious at this time. TCIS responded and will lead investigation.”

9:45 PM: The original call on this was a medical dispatch shortly after 5 pm. Listening back to archived SFD audio, the first SFD crews arriving on scene found the victim, described as a woman around 60, and tried to but ultimately were unable to revive her. The scene was toward the southwest end of the south lot. We’ll be checking with SSC tomorrow to see whether the victim was a staff member or student at the college, or was there for another reason.

ADDED WEDNESDAY MORNING: We asked SSC spokesperson Ty Swenson what the college could tell us – here’s the reply we received:

The South Seattle College community is grieving the unexpected loss of a longtime Student Services employee who passed away on Dec. 13, 2022. The college is focused on supporting employees and students in this difficult time, and we are in communication with the State of Washington Employee Assistance Program to schedule on-site and virtual counseling availability.

The college may have limited student services in the coming days as we allow space for the grieving process, and we thank our students and larger community for their understanding.

He says the employee’s family has not given their approval to identify her beyond the campus community, so we will be waiting either to hear from them or from the Medical Examiner before publishing her name.

4:10 PM: The Medical Examiner has identified the victim as 66-year-old Dolores Taylor and verified that her death was accidental. According to the SSC website, Ms. Taylor was assistant director of financial aid.

 |   Holidays | West Seattle news

Planning on getting a Christmas tree soon? Time is running out for two West Seattle tree lots. First, from the nonprofit-benefiting lot at Holy Rosary School:

The Holy Rosary School tree lot is in the final week of sales. A fresh load of trees arrived Monday night, with another due on Wednesday. If you haven’t found a tree yet, hurry and stop in before they are gone. The lot is scheduled to close for the season after Saturday, December 17th, barring inventory. Wreaths, garland and poinsettias (in partnership with Hope Lutheran) are also available for sale. Proceeds to benefit Holy Rosary School, Hope Lutheran (poinsettias only), West Seattle Food Bank, and Hickman House. Open weekdays at 4 pm and weekends at 9 am, closing 8 pm nightly.

The lot is on the north side of the school, off 42nd north of SW Genesee.

Second, just received from Trees By The Sea (2530 Alki SW): “Very few trees left; we anticipate being done by Thursday the 15th. Regular hours until then: noon to 7 pm. If you’ve been waiting, now is the time to visit. For all of you who’ve already been by we thank you for your amazing reviews, overwhelming joy and general support. We’ll see you all again in 2023!”

P.S. You can find the full list of West Seattle tree-sellers in our Holiday Guide.

CONGRATULATIONS! State championship for U11 boys’ soccer team from West Seattle

Meet the newest champs from West Seattle! The report and photo were sent by Scott Rosenstock:

This past Saturday at Starfire in Tukwila, the 2022 South Sound United League (SSUL) Boys U11 team from West Seattle won the State Recreational Cup Championship! They defeated the Chinqually Booters Thunder from Olympia (who happened to be the State Champs last year). A hard-fought battle between both teams in the cold rain ended regulation and overtime with the score 0-0, so they went to penalty kicks to decide the champion. West Seattle came away victorious, outscoring the Thunder 3-1 in penalties.

The team was also the SSUL Boys U11 Regular Season Champions with a record of 8-1-1.

FOLLOWUP: Here’s how you can help Friends of West Seattle Elementary reach its first big goal

Last week, we told you about our area’s newest Parent Teacher Organization, Friends of West Seattle Elementary. Today, they’re announcing the launch of their first-ever fundraising campaign, and explaining why they’re turning to the peninsula-wide community for help:

The newly established Parent Teacher Organization at West Seattle Elementary (WSE), Friends of West Seattle Elementary (FOWSE), is excited to announce the launch of its inaugural fundraiser! The group of parents, staff and teachers aim to raise $50,000 by March 1st, 2023, to support WSE students in their academic success.

WSE is a community school in the truest sense. Over 80% of our students live in low-income housing within a half-mile of the school and over 83% qualify to receive free or reduced cost lunch. Many of our families are former refugees and have experienced generational trauma and hardships that have created barriers to equitable access to services, including education, yet academic success is highly valued. Access to educational enrichments have proven to be difficult to attain for families of poverty due to parents working atypical hours, language barriers and the lack of understanding of the American educational systems.

To reach our lofty goal in under three months, we are turning to community members and business owners for support. Donations are tax-deductible and will be used to:

(1) Fund additional teachers for future school years – to keep class sizes small when district budget cuts occur. For example, this school year, WSE has some classrooms with over 26 students due to fewer teachers being allocated by the district as a result of district-wide enrollment declines.

(2) Host engagement activities – to enable the PTO to create shared, meaningful experiences, like pizza parties, spirit days, and staff appreciation events for students, staff and their families that wouldn’t otherwise be possible.

(3) Provide classroom supplies and cover field trip costs – to support, encourage and equip teachers on the front-lines delivering an invaluable education to underserved populations.

Please consider making a one-time or recurring donation to support West Seattle Elementary students and staff. Any contribution helps ensure students, regardless of race, background, socioeconomic status, receive the best education possible.

You can make a donation online via this link.

Contact friendsofwse@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Use an RPZ to exclude RVs? Harbor/Alki residents meet with city reps regarding that and 18 other priorities

(WSB photo: Some of the 7 RVs and assorted vehicles seen on Harbor Ave. Monday)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

Would an RPZ be a better tool to discourage RV encampments on Harbor Avenue?

Creation of a new Restricted Parking Zone is one of the steps that residents of Harbor and Alki Avenues tried last night to get a panel of city officials to commit to taking. More than 60 people gathered in the sanctuary of Admiral Church for a promised progress report on concerns that local advocates had taken to the city in recent months. Chief among them: The return of RVs a few months after the August sweep.

But that’s just part of the 19-item wish list that they’ve been pursuing, titled “Top Priorities to Tackle Crime, RVs and Encampments, and Dangerous Streets” – see it here. Part of the purpose of last night’s meeting was to get updates. Here’s who was on the city panel:

Tomorrow (Wednesday) night brings your next chance to see the Fauntleroy UCC Festival of Trees – a dozen creatively decorated trees with unique takes on the season. Among them, a “Star Wars” tree (with a sign inviting you to guess whose quotes are on its branches):

For those whose space taste runs back even further in time, there’s also a “Star Trek” tree:

There’s a Peru-themed tree highlighting the church’s work with immigrants:

And the church’s pastor, Rev. Leah Atkinson Bilinski, exhibited a sense of humor with this tree:

That one has the title “Idol-a-Tree,” a pun paying homage to the ’80s music icon. Other themes include birds and Legos (the full list is here). The Fellowship Hall at the church (9140 California SW) will be open again tomorrow night (and the following Wednesday night) 7-8 pm for viewing. If you can, bring a nonperishable-food donation – people are voting for their favorite tree by placing cans and boxes around them.
