TRAFFIC UPDATE: Sylvan Way work finishes early

2:10 PM: The photo is from Sam, who says those crews have just wrapped up their work for the day on Sylvan Way, two hours earlier than planned, so all lanes are now open. Though the originally announced plan – smoothing the pavement where drainage work had been done recently – was for work to continue tomorrow, Sam says the crews told her they will not return until March 18th; we are following up with Seattle Public Utilities.

7:14 PM: SPU confirms the new date for completion, so again, NO work Tuesday.

ANOTHER TRAFFIC ALERT: Sylvan Way lane closures

(January photo sent by Sam)

Just in from Seattle Public Utilities, a traffic alert for the start of next week:

A contractor for Seattle Public Utilities will begin asphalt paving on Sylvan Way SW on Monday, March 1. SPU completed a drainage improvement project on Sylvan Way SW last month and is now permanently restoring the roadway. This paving work had been scheduled for February 15 but was rescheduled due to winter weather.

Work hours are anticipated to be 9 am to 4 pm. On Monday, March 1, one lane near 6950 Sylvan Way SW will be closed. Two-way traffic will be maintained by flaggers. All travel lanes will be open outside of working hours. The following day, on Tuesday, March 2, crews will complete paving within the road’s bike lane near 7194 Sylvan Way SW. Two-way traffic will be maintained via a lane shift into the middle turn lane. Vehicles should use caution near the work area.

Asphalt paving work is weather-dependent, and schedule is subject to change.

FOLLOWUP: New, shorter schedule for southbound 1st Avenue South Bridge work

(Reader photo from WSB files; southbound span is in background)

Just in from the state Department of Transportation: A new, shorter schedule for the upcoming work on the southbound 1st Avenue South Bridge, starting later and ending earlier than announced last week. The work to repair bearing pads (as explained here) will start the night of Friday, March 5th. That night, and the next night (Saturday, March 6th), the southbound bridge will be fully closed 9 pm-6 am. Then, no work until noon March 10th, when the southbound bridge will be reduced to two lanes. Those closures will continue until noon March 15th, with two full overnight closures 9 pm-6 am the nights of Sunday, March 14th, and Monday, March 15th. (WSDOT explains that, “During the first two overnight closures, crews will lift the bridge deck a small amount to access, remove, and begin replacement of the bearing pads. When work is complete, crews will use the final two closures to complete the bridge repair work.”) This work will NOT involve the northbound side – which is actually a separate, older bridge – at any point, WSDOT stresses. We first reported last October that this project was in the works; it was originally expected to happen in January.

P.S. If you have questions, be at tonight’s West Seattle Transportation Coalition meeting, which is scheduled to include a WSDOT guest talking about this work.

Work continues in all three zones of Delridge Way where pavement and utility upgrades are preparing for the RapidRide H Line conversion. Here is the SDOT list of key points for the week ahead:

*Intersection demolition and restoration at SW Holden St and SW Kenyon St continues this week. Work at both intersections will be completed in phases to maintain access to the roadway.

*Electrical upgrades near SW Oregon St and SW Alaska St continue, with sidewalk and driveway restoration beginning next week. Residents will be notified in advance of driveway closures.

*Water-main installation and upgrades near SW Juneau St to continue into early March

*Roadway demolition on the east side of Delridge Way SW between Croft Pl SW and SW Orchard St to begin as soon as March 1

READER REPORT: Crash on West Marginal Way

Thanks to Monika for the photo and report – she heard a “loud bang,” then looked out the window and saw the scene, at West Marginal Way SW and SW Dakota [map]. No SFD dispatch, so apparently no serious injuries. That’s not far from where SDOT crews have been working to repair pavement by a road-spanning railroad track this weekend.

FOLLOWUP: West Marginal Way road repair planned for multiple weekends

As we noted on Twitter last night and in today’s morning traffic roundup, we learned during last night’s SDOT meeting on West Marginal Way (full meeting report soon) that the road is scheduled for pavement repair this weekend and beyond. We just obtained details:

Starting this weekend and lasting up to three weekends, our crews will be repairing pavement around these abandoned railroad tracks, about 1 mile south of the Chelan 5-way intersection.

(SDOT photo)

Starting this weekend, Saturday, February 20 and Sunday, February 21 from approximately 8:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. our crews will be repairing pavement at abandoned railroad tracks on West Marginal Way. This work may continue the two following weekends, February 27-28, and March 6-7. This work is weather-dependent.

The railroad tracks are located about 1 mile south of the Chelan 5-way intersection, just south of the intersection with SW Idaho St.

West Marginal Way will be reduced to a single lane in each direction at the project site. Traffic management will be in place for traffic to start merging as it approaches the work area. Please expect delays as we merge traffic to complete this work, as well as noise and minor vibrations.

During last night’s meeting, the initial mention of this emerged when an attendee asked if those unused tracks could be removed. SDOT’s Sara Zora said no, because they belong to “an adjacent property owner” who wants to keep them.

P.S. Reminder that this weekend also will see lane closures on the northbound 1st Avenue South Bridge 6 am-noon both days.

WEATHER, TRAFFIC, TRANSIT: Friday watch, with weekend alerts

ADDED 8 AM: As noted in our separate coverage of an SFD response on SW Genesee near 26th SW, avoid the area. Most of the response has cleared but westbound is still blocked and Metro has rerouted Route 50.

VIDEO: Trash burns in street after truck fire in Fauntleroy

6:55 PM: Thanks for the tip. A “car fire” callout in the 4000 block of SW Barton is actually a solid-waste truck fire, says our texter, and police are being dispatched for traffic control – the dispatcher described it as a “large trash fire in the roadway.’ We’re on the way to check it out.

7:11 PM: Adding reader video sent by Eric Nordlund. As it shows, and as our crew reports, the truck had to dump trash in the street after the truck broke out – and that’s where the trash burned. No injuries.

Now they have to figure out how to get it cleaned up.

(WSB photo)

7:24 PM: Police have just told dispatch that the road is likely to be blocked “for several hours.”
