TRAFFIC ALERT: Sylvan Way work Sunday

SDOT crews will be back on Sylvan Way this Sunday, cutting more trees and other vegetation to improve visibility. The work is planned for 9 am to 4 pm and will include lane reductions; uniformed officers wiil be there to direct traffic. Meantime, SDOT has reiterated that radar-equipped speed-limit signs are on order – as first reported here last week – with four planned, to try to slow down speeders on the increasingly popular route for bridge-detour traffic.

UPDATE: Truck crash followed by fuel leak on Harbor Island; low bridge affected

(Added: SDOT camera image)

2:26 PM: A big Seattle Fire response was just dispatched to handle a fuel leak on Harbor Island, and radio communication indicates low-bridge access will be closed, at the 5-way intersection on the west side, East Marginal/Spokane on the east side. Updates to come.

2:32 PM: SFD reports the leak “is contained.” Whatever leaked, it was onto the roadway; responders are checking to see if any got into the river.

3 PM: Still closed. We’re heering from some bus riders who are stuck waiting to get across.

3:08 PM: Per radio communication, they’re getting ready to let some westbound traffic through.

3:30 PM: SDOT says eastbound traffic is also now being allowed through.

7:06 PM: We followed up with SFD on the incident’s cause.Spokesperson David Cuerpo tells WSB, “Crews initially responded to the scene to treat the driver of a semi-truck from an earlier single-vehicle collision near the 1000 and 1100 block of SW Spokane St. The driver was treated for minor injuries and did not require transportation to a hospital. As the semi was moving away from the area, firefighters on scene noticed a fuel leak from the semi and upgraded the response to request the Seattle Fire HAZMAT team. Crews secured the diesel leak and requested SDOT to the scene for clean-up of fuel.”

TUESDAY: Alki Avenue traffic alert

July 26, 2020 8:43 pm
|    Comments Off on TUESDAY: Alki Avenue traffic alert
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

(Photo sent by Stewart L.)

Heads up if you travel on Alki Avenue in the Duwamish Head area – the construction project at 1250 Alki SW has sent word of a traffic alert for Tuesday:

1250 Alki Ave will be placing its structural foundation on Tuesday, July 28th.

Starting early in the morning, all vehicular traffic within ¼ mile on either side of the project will be reduced to one, alternating lane.

Wait time should be minimal (less than 5 min) through the morning hours, but traffic typically increases around 10:00 AM, and could lead to a few additional minutes through the early afternoon.

SINGLE LANE CLOSURE OF ALKI AVE

Traffic control signage will be set up early on the morning of the 28th.

The Eastbound lane will be closed and all vehicular traffic (in both directions) will use the lane on the north side.

The North side lane will be controlled by a team of Uniformed Police officers and a traffic control team. They will use an alternating pattern to control vehicular traffic past the project.

Extended working hours

Concrete placement will begin between 5:45 – 6:00 AN. We anticipate the concrete placement will last approximately 8-9 hours and the completion will be around 6:00 PM.

UPDATE: Junction crash takes out mailbox

7:07 PM: Avoid 42nd/Alaska for a while. SFD and SPD have responded to a crash; one car is up on the sidewalk by the Jefferson Square sign. The driver wasn’t hurt but knocked over the USPS mailbox. The scene will clear after the car’s towed.

7:29 PM: SFD has cleared from the scene but the traffic camera shows police are still directing traffic.

7:59 PM: Scene’s now clear.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Tree down across California Way

Thanks for the tips (and to Mike Jensen for the photo) – a tree is down across California Way, uphill from Harbor Avenue SW, so you won’t be able to use that route between Admiral and Alki until it’s cleared.

DELRIDGE PROJECT: Here’s where crews will be working next

Some additional closures – including a parking-lot entrance – and overnight work are part of what’s ahead next week in the Delridge road-work megaproject paving the way for the RapidRide H Line. Here’s what the project team just sent. Note that they are continuing to work in all three project “zones” simultaneously.

*This week, we began excavating a trench across 24th Ave SW/SW Graham St to complete utility work in the roadway
*Access to 24th Ave SW, 25th Ave SW and SW Graham St will be interrupted during this work
*If you need to exit at 24th Ave SW onto Delridge Way SW, please plan for delays of up to 30 minutes to exit and enter your street during working hours

DELRIDGE PROJECT: Closures, night work, and what else is planned this week

(WSB photo)

Summer is the prime season for road work and a lot is continuing along Delridge to prepare for converting Metro Route 120 into the RapidRide H Line. Here are key points for the week ahead, from SDOT’s project team:

Throughout July, we will continue demolishing existing roadway and pouring new concrete panels, demolishing sidewalks, installing new curb ramps, and installing storm and water pipes throughout the corridor in the three work zones listed below. We will also remove and trim trees as needed.

What to expect the week of July 20

We will work in all three zones at the same time, from north to south on Delridge Way SW. No Parking signs will be posted on both sides of the street in each phase of work to shift traffic around the work zones. As each zone progresses, parking will be restored. In each of the three work zones, travel lanes will be reduced to one lane in each direction with restricted turns. Please follow posted traffic signs.

For people biking along the corridor, please dismount your bikes at the intersection of Delridge Way SW and SW Juneau St where the greenway crosses. There is a traffic control officer to help bikers safely navigate around the large equipment and construction activities.
