CORONAVIRUS: Gatewood Elementary cases lead to masking recommendation

Thanks for the early-morning forward. As happened at West Seattle HS a month ago, Gatewood Elementary is recommending mask-wearing because of “multiple COVID cases.” Here’s the note Gatewood principal Kyna Hogg sent:

Dear Gatewood Elementary Families,

There have been multiple positive COVID-19 cases identified at Gatewood Elementary. At this time, the district is recommending that all students and teachers wear a mask for the next 10 calendar days starting today to help prevent further transmission of COVID-19.

Please talk with your child [Monday] evening about wearing a mask at school, and if you are able to, please send your child to school with a mask. We also have masks available at school for any child who needs one.

Our goal is to keep as many students learning in-person as possible while maintaining a safe environment. To help do that, we ask that you please monitor your child for COVID-19 symptoms and keep them home if they are sick.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

The district’s COVID dashboard is here.

ADMIRAL WAY BRIDGE: New retrofit timeline, and studies for a replacement someday

(Admiral Way Bridges from Fairmount Avenue, via Google Maps Street View)

Three years after voters approved the “Move Seattle” transportation levy in 2015, SDOT announced a work plan that included various West Seattle projects. Among them, seismic retrofitting for the Admiral Way bridges over Fairmount Ravine (technically two structures). Fast-forward to late 2021, when SDOT told us planning for the retrofit was under way and that construction was likely to start in late 2022-early 2023. It’s been pushed back again, we learned, after following up on a mention of the Admiral Way bridges last week when an SDOT rep briefed the Levy Oversight Committee. Wes Ducey‘s briefing focused on studying various bridges around the city for eventual replacement, including Admiral:

Here’s what an “alternative analysis” is about:

In the briefing, Ducey suggested, among other things, that the city might consider designating one particular bridge to be the next in line for replacement, rather than continue to study and re-study multiple bridges:

After that briefing, we checked with SDOT regarding the Admiral Way bridges retrofit project. And we learned the retrofit is now not expected to start in “early 2023” after all. SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson told WSB, “We are still planning to complete a seismic retrofit on the Admiral Way Bridges by the end of 2024, thanks to funding from the voter-approved Levy to Move Seattle.” As for studying it for potential replacement, Bergerson explained,”While we do not anticipate the need to replace this bridge anytime soon, the planning study will incorporate what we learn during the seismic retrofit and be a valuable resource in the future if the City ever needs to choose between investing in additional major maintenance or completely rebuilding the bridge decades from now.”

P.S. During last week’s Levy Oversight Committee briefing, City Councilmember Alex Pedersen – who’s a committee member – mentioned that the council committee he chairs, Transportation and Public Utilities, will talk about bridges later this month, in the context of the citywide bridge audit.

|    Comments Off on DEAL: Register for Loop the ‘Lupe 2023 before next price increase
 |   Fun stuff to do | How to help | West Seattle news

If you’re thinking about being part of this year’s Loop the ‘Lupe – our area’s only obstacle-course 5K – this is the week to sign up. Prices go up Friday for three of the five levels at which you can participate this year – the Family Wave Obstacle Course 5K, the new Elite Wave Obstacle Course 5K, or Fun Run 5K. You can get in on the early prices by going here to sign up. Loop the ‘Lupe happens June 3rd at Walt Hundley Playfield (34th/Myrtle), next to Our Lady of Guadalupe, whose community social work is supported by the event. (Loop the ‘Lupe also includes Senior Saunter and Youth 1K options, but those prices don’t change until just a couple days before LTL.) Set your calendar for June 3rd even if you don’t want to run/walk/dodge – music, food, and a beer garden will be set up on the sidelines for everyone to celebrate a day in the park. (WSB is a Loop the ‘Lupe community sponsor.)

FERRIES: Service added on Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth route

(WSB photo, ferries seen from Lincoln Park at midday earlier this month)

Though Washington State Ferries has said it doesn’t expect to be able to restore the “Triangle Route” to three-boat service until later this year, it has added some sailings starting this week. Here’s the announcement:

To help supplement service, Washington State Ferries has added the following weekday service on our Fauntleroy/ Vashon/ Southworth “Triangle” route to fill gaps in the two-boat schedule when crewing allows:

11:15 a.m. existing Southworth to Vashon will load Fauntleroy traffic
11:50 a.m. Vashon to Fauntleroy
12:15 p.m. Fauntleroy to Vashon (continues to Southworth)
7:35 p.m. Fauntleroy to Southworth (currently to Vashon)
8:10 p.m. Southworth to Vashon
8:30 p.m. Vashon to Fauntleroy
8:55 p.m. Fauntleroy to Vashon
9:20 p.m. Vashon to Southworth
9:35 p.m. Southworth to Vashon (Fridays only)

As reported here, WSF hopes to restore three-boat service on weekdays in May, then full 7-days-a-week restoration in fall.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Another business burglary; stolen black Suburban; abandoned Elantra (resolved)

COUNTDOWN: Two months until West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2023! Here’s when registration begins

|    Comments Off on COUNTDOWN: Two months until West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2023! Here’s when registration begins
 |   Community Garage Sale Day | West Seattle news

Just two months away from West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2023! As always, the big day will be on the second Saturday in May – this year, that’s Saturday, May 13th. Just a refresher, WSCGSD is not one big sale – it’s one big day, with many sales of many sizes, all around West Seattle, 9 am-3 pm (though individual sellers are welcome to start earlier and/or end later). We call WSCGSD “the ultimate person-to-person recycling event.” Registration will open Monday, April 3rd – watch for the announcement and link here on WSB that day; registration will then stay open for about three weeks. After that, the map/list of sales will be available here starting one week before sale day. Aside from the 2020-2021 pandemic hiatus, we’ve presented West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day every year since 2008; it was founded in 2005 and presented through 2007 by a nonprofit called Megawatt.

WEST SEATTLE WILDLIFE: Time to watch for signs of spawning herring

(2017 photo by “Diver Laura” James)

Six years ago, we told you about herring spawning off West Seattle – which led to pearly eggs, like those in the photo above, on the beach, after sea birds and sea lions were seen in a feeding frenzy offshore, near “milky swaths” that are telltale signs of what’s happening. “Diver Laura” James says it’s time to watch for that again – and to report it if you see it. She tells WSB, “Our West Seattle herring spawn should be starting any day now and and it would be amazing if local readers could keep an eye out for spawning activity so we can capture the action with drone and 360 underwater cameras.” The Coastal Watershed Institute has been watching – saying it’s “been extremely predictable the last five years. You could literally set your watch to the shoals of fish, brilliant white water, layer upon layer of herring eggs, and caterwauling sea lions and birds. This year? Nothing.” But spawning has begun in an area of British Columbia, so there’s hope they’re just running late this year. If you think you’re seeing signs of spawning, you can email Laura – ljjames (at) mac (dot) com.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen maroon/silver ‘loud’ F-250 (update: found), and two other reports

Three reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:

STOLEN PICKUP: From Dennis:

My truck was stolen from in front of my house last night between 10:00 pm and 6:00 this morning—3600 block of SW Othello St. Maroon over silver Ford F-250 Pickup with an extended cab. License # C42605D. An important note is that it is a DIESEL engine. It is very loud!

5:34 PM: Dennis sent this update:

My truck was recovered in the 7700 Block of 34 AVE SW. Punched out the ignition switch, content inside pilfered but nothing missing.

I would also like to thank the 911 call center which took the report. And the responding police officer who came to my house, within 1 hour after reporting the theft. The police officers who helped me recover my truck. Most of all I give a BIG THANKS to the lady who found it. With all the talk of “Defund the police” “Police don’t do anything” and “West Seattle is a bad place to live” I say BOLOGNA!

(back to original roundup) Meantime, two more reports from the past few days:

GUNFIRE INVESTIGATION: From the SPD report summaries made available this morning, word of confirmed gunfire early Friday. A report of suspected gunfire brought officers to 30th/Barton around 12:30 am Friday. Callers said the shots were fired from a vehicle. Officers found shell casings but no victims or property damage.

PACKAGE THEFT: Reader report from Stefan in Fauntleroy:

3/12/23 around 9:00 am on SW Director St., a porch pirate stole an Amazon package off our porch. It appeared they were following the delivery truck. They carried up an empty iPhone box and dropped it off while they picked up our delivery (a voltmeter/electrical tester device). I think this was to appear they were doing a delivery.

Our doorbell camera captured some images of the thief.

Green/gray hooded jacket with the lower half in dark blue, purple shirt, and yellow shoes with white soles. Zipped off in a mid-2000s dark-colored Nissan Altima with a small spoiler on the trunk.

Keep your eyes out & stay safe.

VIDEO: City Council Candidate Chat, with Preston Anderson

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

Preston Anderson believes he can “bring positive change” to Seattle by being elected to the District 1 City Council seat

He is the latest candidate to sit down with us for our initial series of Candidate Chats, video-recorded conversations meant to give you an early chance to see and hear the candidates who have officially announced they’re campaigning for the seat Lisa Herbold is leaving after two terms. Anderson is a West Seattle resident and clinical social worker who works at the Veterans Administration medical center. We talked with him at Fauntleroy Schoolhouse last Monday; here’s our unedited half-hour conversation:

If you can’t or don’t want to take the time to watch/listen, here’s our summary:

Questions for police? Two community meetings Tuesday night

March 12, 2023 8:07 pm
|    Comments Off on Questions for police? Two community meetings Tuesday night
 |   Neighborhoods | West Seattle news | West Seattle police

Though the Southwest Precinct Crime Prevention Council isn’t meeting this month, if you have questions for local police, you have two opportunities on Tuesday night. Precinct leaders are expected at both the Admiral Neighborhood Association and Fauntleroy Community Association‘s monthly meetings, 7 pm Tuesday (March 14th). Admiral meets in-person only, at Admiral Church (4320 SW Hill); Fauntleroy meets in person with online/call-in options, at Fauntleroy Schoolhouse (9131 California SW). There’s a potential third option when Alki Community Council meets at 7 pm Thursday (March 16th) at Alki UCC (6115 SW Hinds) and online, as they too often have an SPD guest, but their agenda isn’t out yet.

UPDATE: Crash, investigation closes 35th between Alaska and Avalon for an hour

6:02 PM: Police have told dispatch that 35th SW northbound is closed between Alaska and Avalon. A two-vehicle collision is involved but some kind of police response preceded the crash – we’re working to find out more.

6:10 PM: Thanks to Jason for the photo above. More than two vehicles appear to be involved. We’re heading to the scene to try to find out more.

(WSB photo)

6:26 PM: The juvenile driver of the black car that hit the tree is being taken to the precinct for questioning. Police at the scene told our crew that he was driving recklessly, speeding, downhill on 35th before hitting other cars. The car was not stolen. However, just after our crew left the scene, an officer told dispatch that this car matches the description of the one in which the Westwood GameStop robbery suspects are believed to have gotten away in, so they’ll be investigating that. No injuries reported at the crash scene.

7:11 PM: Police are reopening the street; the black car is being towed to SPD’s evidence-processing facility.

VIDEO: Orcas in Elliott Bay

5:56 PM: Thanks to Kersti Muul for the tip: Transient orcas are in the area right now, in Elliott Bay, headed toward the north end of the downtown waterfront. Just in time for extra daylight to see them – the first Daylight Saving Time sunset is still an hour-plus away!

7:37 PM: Thanks to Kate H. for sending that video with a glimpse of orcas just off Seacrest!

11:38 PM: Thanks to Robin Sinner for the photo added above, taken around 6:45 pm from the Don Armeni Boat Ramp area

READER REPORT: Watch for hummingbird nests

Tom Trulin sent that photo of a nesting hummingbird, a perfect illustration for this reminder we received from Suzanne Krom: When you’re out doing yard work (or if you don’t have a yard, if you’re out helping or volunteering in greenspaces), watch carefully to be sure you don’t unintentionally disturb one of these nests:

Hummingbirds nesting now … be super aware if you’re pruning

These tiny nests are so easy to miss! They are only 1.5 inches in diameter.

Before pruning and without touching the branches of a tree or shrub (or minimally touching, at most), carefully look for nests. They’re usually somewhat obscured by leaves. Their placement will probably be at the intersection of a stem and an anchoring branch.
allaboutbirds.org/guide/Annas_Hummingbird/lifehistory

If you see a nest, leave the birds alone to let them raise their young in peace. Disturbing an active nest often results in the adults abandoning the eggs/young. Let them be. A bird’s greatest secret is the location of their nest.

It’s up to each of us to respect that secret. Life is hard enough for them without us interfering in their lives.

The perfect nest in the photo was in our Tall Oregon Grape last year, located about 4 feet off the ground. The pair of Anna’s hummingbirds that frequent our yard used it twice to successfully raise their young. I moved it into our home at the end of October, when I knew their nesting season was complete.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Store robbery

(Reader photo, sent by Molly)

1:41 PM: The Game Stop store at Westwood Village was held up at gunpoint around 12:30 pm today. The robber reportedly was armed with a handgun and stole cash before running out of the store and toward Roxhill Park across SW Barton. That’s where police detained two people minutes later but determined those weren’t the people they’re looking for, so their search resumed. We’re going back through archived audio and will add any description information we find. No injuries reported at the store.

2:07 PM: The descriptions broadcast on police report were of two Black men, possibly in their early 20s, one 6’1″ and light-skinned, the other 5’9″ and darker-skinned, with black clothing, white shoes, and light-colored masks, one with a silver handgun. Police also talked with a person who saw two possible suspects hopping into a vehicle (no description of that) on 31st SW and heading south “at a high rate of speed.” If you have any information, the SPD incident # is 23-68210.

2:47 PM: SPD has just posted about this, with one added detail – the robbers also got away with a customer’s wallet.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Restaurant burglary

10:56 AM: That photo is from Pecos Pit (35th/Fauntleroy; WSB sponsor), which was burglarized overnight. The restaurant is closed for lunch while it assesses the damage; we’ll be checking back to see when they reopen. If you have any information, the SPD incident # is 23-067996.

12:17 PM: We just stopped by Pecos Pit to follow up. They don’t expect to be able to open today; the burglar(s) did serious damage to the point-of-sale system, so that has to be repaired. Some food was also stolen. They’re hoping to be able to open tomorrow – regular hours would be 11 am-9 pm.

REAL ESTATE: Admiral Way 7-11 site for sale

(King County Assessor photo)

Every so often, a check of the commercial real-estate listings yields something of note. Tonight, it’s the 7-11 site at 4312 SW Admiral Way, listed for sale about a week ago for $1,550,000. It’s a (corrected) 8,973-square-foot lot zoned Neighborhood Commercial 55, for potentially up to five stories of mixed-use redevelopment. The listing also notes the site has held a 7-11 for more than half a century – since 1968. Its sale wouldn’t necessarily mean the end of that, though; the brochure for the listing says the 7-11’s lease runs through 2025, with two five-year extension options after that. Property records show the most-recent 7-11 site sale in West Seattle was California/Erskine, which sold for $2.9 million three years ago. Of the other 7-11 sites, three are company-owned – Highland Park, South Delridge, and 35th/Avalon

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Chilly beauty

As we edge closer to spring – 2:24 pm Monday, March 20th – an appreciation for a phenomenon of wintry weather: Feathery frost. We received these photos this week from readers who were both independently impressed by the beautiful patterns of frost on glass. KD said a discussion with a friend yielded the name “hoarfrost,” and this description would seem to verify that’s what this was.

“I’m still amazed by the beauty of this type of frost,” she added. We might not see it again any time soon – at least for the next week ago, temperatures are expected to stay closer to seasonal norms.

ALSO SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Fireboat tribute

Thanks to Rachel for the photos of Seattle Fire Department fireboat Leschi off Don Armeni Boat Ramp this afternoon. It’s not unusual to see a fireboat out testing – or sometimes welcoming (during the Seafair Fleet arrival or the first cruise ship of the season, for example) – but Rachel also heard the unmistakable strains of “Amazing Grace.” So we contacted SFD to see if it perhaps had been a memorial. Just got the reply. The Leschi was already scheduled to be out drilling, and then: “A retired Seattle Fire Boat Engineer recently passed away. The crew learned that the family was going to be at the park, so during their drill, they did a thoughtful gesture and honored Retired Fire Boat Engineer Connie Sample with a water show.
