UPDATE: Truck fire in The Junction

10:46 AM: Thanks for the tip – a vehicle fire is blocking traffic at 41st/Oregon in The Junction, so you’ll want to avoid the area for a while. The fire is described only as an engine fire in a “commercial vehicle”; we are en route to find out more.

11:18 AM: Photo added. No one hurt. This is a commercial tree service’s truck; police say the driver reported the truck suddenly lost power, started rolling backward, with smoke coming from the engine. A tow truck is expected shortly to clear the scene.

The West Seattle High School football team’s season opened at home Friday night at Southwest Athletic Complex. The visiting North Thurston HS Rams went home with the win, 43-7. Neither team scored in the first quarter, but things got going in the second, including WSHS’s lone TD, by #9, senior Khalel Kelley:

At halftime, the Wildcats were still within striking distance, down 16-7.

But the Rams were on a roll, and pulled away in the second half.

Next Friday, Head Coach Jeff Scott and the Wildcats are on the road at South Whidbey.

FOLLOWUP: Students, parents rally for crossing safety on Admiral Way

Maybe you saw them – or even offered a honk of support, as we heard several drivers do – at 45th SW/SW Admiral Way this morning. As first announced in this comment by Hollye, students and parents gathered to call attention to crossing safety.

Hollye and others have been campaigning for a crosswalk here for two years. Earlier this week, the area drew renewed attention when, just one block west, a driver hit two pedestrians. While SDOT’s SW Admiral Way Safety Project has mostly only addressed crossings further west, this section of the street is just a block from the Lafayette Elementary playground, and on the walking route to Madison Middle School a bit further south on 45th.

They got a high-profile show of support – State Sen. Joe Nguyen, a nearby resident as well as parent of future elementary schoolers.

Besides sign waving, the students enthusiastically shouted slogans such as “Slow and steady wins the race!” After almost half an hour, it was time for everybody to cross Admiral and head to school:

There is some hope for improvements at the intersection – while one of the proposed projects on the Your Voice, Your Choice ballot is titled 44th/Admiral (as reported here earlier this week), the full proposal (PDF) actually appears to suggest most of the improvements go to 45th/Admiral. (YVYC voting continues all month.)

2 nights until ‘On the Brink’ at Admiral Theater

Lots of big events this weekend (as shown in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar), including one of citywide interest – the screening of “On the Brink” 7 pm Sunday (September 8th) at the Admiral Theater. Filmmaker Jeff Shulman, a UW professor, will be there for a discussion. As described:

The movie explores the hyperbolic growth of Seattle and its ramifications to local communities and neighborhoods. … While the documentary takes place in Seattle’s Central District, it evokes the human impact of a transformation that is occurring in neighborhoods throughout Seattle. West Seattleis experiencing rapid changes and the Historic Admiral Theater is hosting the screening as a community event to start a constructive dialogue about our neighborhood’s growth.

Tickets are $13 and are available on the Admiral Theater’s website. All ticket sales will be donated to Southwest Youth and Family Services. Southwest Youth and Family Services partners with youth and families to transform their futures through its counseling, education, family support, and youth development programs.

The theater is at 2343 California SW.

BIZNOTE: High Point coffee shop update

(WSB photo, June)

If you’ve been wondering about the status of the future coffee shop that Itto’s Tapas proprietor Khalid Agour plans to open at 35th and Graham in the Upton Flats development – we have an update today:

Construction is taking longer than planned. We will be opening – hopefully – sometime in October. Construction is coming along.

We have finalized the name – “Nos Nos Coffee House.” Nos Nos is a popular coffee drink in Morocco. It literally means “half half” and is made from half espresso and half milk.

We can’t wait to open up the space to our beloved West Seattle community that have been waiting patiently.

Our previous report was back in June.

The flag first went up back in 2014.

WEST SEATTLE LIGHT RAIL: New information expected next week

It’s been 3 1/2 months since Sound Transit‘s West Seattle-to-Ballard light-rail planning entered a new phase, with the ST Board finalizing what the Draft Environmental Impact Statement should include. The board also told ST staff to look at some other options – and those assessments are about to go public, ST has announced, specifically these assessments of these possibilities:

*Elevating the new and existing light rail lines in SODO
*Refinement of the Pigeon Ridge Tunnel route with a refined Duwamish crossing, tunnel through Pigeon Point and further south Delridge station
*Route along Yancy/Andover corridor, with a Delridge station serving Youngstown
*Tunnel route with tunnel station at 20th Ave NW in Ballard

That description is from an ST message to former Stakeholder Advisory Group members, which adds:

We plan to have evaluation results for these initial assessment alternatives in mid-September and anticipate sharing those results with the Sound Transit Board at the Sept. 12th System Expansion Committee meeting and the public at that time. We are targeting October for Sound Transit Board review and potential action.

The committee meets 1:30-4 pm next Thursday at the ST boardroom downtown (401 S. Jackson) – here’s the agenda (PDF).

35TH/AVALON CLOSURE: Here’s how to get to businesses

Just back from 35th/Avalon to check on the intersection closure, scheduled to continue until 6 am Monday. Above, crews have wasted no time demolishing the heart of the intersection. Traffic was heavier than usual on Fauntleroy Way – at 37th, an officer is directing detoured traffic:

So what about the businesses, if you’re driving? Pecos Pit (WSB sponsor) can be accessed from southbound 35th – they’re offering various $2 specials.

Habit Burger, Taco Time, and Starbucks are accessible from east/southbound Avalon, via eastbound Fauntleroy.

Meantime, here’s the bus-reroute info again. We’ll keep checking on this through the next few days.

DESIGN REVIEW: 4401 42nd SW gets OK to advance to next phase

(Rendering from packet by Cone Architecture)

By Tracy Record
West Seattle Blog editor

The Southwest Design Review Board‘s first look at 4401 42nd SW ended with approval to move to the second phase of the process, with advice including, heed the project’s surroundings – especially Holy Rosary Catholic Church, whose dramatic entrance and bell tower will be right across Genesee.

The meeting was the second half of a doubleheader (here’s how the night began) at the Senior Center/Sisson Building, and was an Early Design Guidance meeting, meaning the focus was on size/shape/placement on the site – the finer points of design are the subject of the next round of the process. The project is proposed for (under the team’s “preferred” massing) 72 Small Efficiency Dwelling Units (microapartments), 6 live-work units (all “paired and recessed”), and 36 offstreet parking spaces. The design packet by Cone Architecture is here (PDF) and below:

(Wednesday afternoon) officers arrested two people for theft and recovered a loaded handgun from one of the suspects. Police searched the 35-year-old woman and found the weapon stashed in her purse. Police booked the woman and her accomplice, a 39-year-old man, into King County Jail.

First heating oil, now natural gas in the city’s crosshairs

Two weeks ago, when we followed up on the mayor’s proposal to tax heating oil as a way of getting it phased out faster, we mentioned a remark by Councilmember Mike O’Brien‘s remark that the city was “working on” a proposal to address natural gas. He has since gone public with a proposal – seeking to prohibit natural-gas piping in new buildings. It’ll be discussed in the City Council’s Sustainability and Transportation Committee, which he chairs, tomorrow afternoon. Here’s the draft legislation:

It would put the ban in place starting next July, with any new-construction application initiated July 1st or later. This is an early-stage proposal – tomorrow afternoon’s 1 pm meeting at City Hall downtown is scheduled for a briefing and discussion, not a vote. O’Brien was scheduled to join environmental groups at a media event about the proposal this morning.

The official shuttle-related advisory is here.

Important note: At one point the SDOT previews said Metro buses would be allowed southbound on 35th Ave SW from Fauntleroy between 3 PM and 7 PM on Friday during this closure – but that plan has been scrapped and Metro reroutes will run continuously starting at 9 am tomorrow. (More overall project updates are coming up later today.)

ADDED 3:25 PM: From SDOT, a bit more info about the closure:

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Stolen black BMW; break-in attempt

11:02 AM: Catherine hopes you’ll be on the lookout for her sister’s stolen car: “2011 black BMW, license plate BNB7599.” We have a followup question out asking what neighborhood it was taken from; meantime, if you see it, call 911.

11:12 AM: Adding this incident just emailed by Denny:

I was woken up this morning around 4:45 am to someone loudly banging on my front door. I knew something wasn’t right so I grabbed my firearm and looked out the peephole. It was some guy who was obviously drunk or high and I yelled at him to go away. He proceeded to try and open my door which was locked and kept rambling to himself and hanging out just outside my door. Every few secs he would try my doorknob and open my door. During this time I had 911 on the line and officers were dispatched. SPD arrived within 2-3 mins and ended up arresting the individual who also had warrants out for his arrest. Huge thanks to SPD and the Southwest Precinct. Remember to lock your doors at night! This happened on 41st Ave. between SW Edmunds St. & SW Hudson St. Incident # 19-331389.

SPORTS: No Sundodger cross-country meet at Lincoln Park this year

(2013 Sundodger photo courtesy Karen)

What’s usually one of the biggest events of the year at Lincoln Park will not be happening this year. The Sundodger Invitational cross-country meet usually brings hundreds of student-athletes to Lincoln Park each fall. But while doing some research for the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, we noticed it seemed to have vanished from the calendar at the University of Washington, which presents the meet. So we checked with the UW; spokesperson Michael Bruscas confirms, “This year the coaches were looking to adjust the timing of the Sundodger but there turned out to be a schedule conflict with the dates they were looking at so it just didn’t work out. But it certainly may return in future years.”
