This is my biggest fear with my kids at this location.  I always make them use the corners with stop lights but I fear they take short cuts.  I hope the new cross walk lights get approved.  There are 3 schools on the other side of admiral and this is a hot spot for crossing.

Extremely dangerous place to cross. Hope everyone involved is ok. Any word from SFD on their condition?

  • Jort September 4, 2019 (2:17 pm)

Every intersection is a crosswalk, whether you see stripey white lines or not. If you don’t like this law, then stop driving. It is stunning how much disregard car drivers have for human life outside their little metal cocoons.

I wish more people KNEW this! We need more signs put up at intersections so drivers know. One time by 49th and Admiral Sw someone crossed the street and a driver was waving his hands all annoyed at her because he had to stop.

Just got info on the victims in this. Adding above.

Just walking in crosswalk at Dakota and California today. Lights blinking at crosswalk, yet older driver looking at phone just drove straight through. All others stopped. If we hadn’t looked before we started walking, she would have hit us. People! Do not text and drive or look at your phones. Put them in proper phone holder and have audio for directions, period!!!

    • Lynn September 7, 2019 (1:41 am)

Same thing almost happened to me. Perhaps its time to make this an actual traffic light where people stop.

  • Josh September 4, 2019 (3:05 pm)

Even marked crosswalks can be dangerous. Just saying, cars watch out for pedestrians and pedestrians look both ways when crossing the street! Be safe West Seattle.

I live right here and have for the last three plus years. It seems to me a lot of people who live and drive around this neighborhood are aware of others who come speeding up and down Admiral Way. They have little to no care for others except for the attention they are seeking with how fast and how loud their cars or motorcycles are. It’s actually quite pathetic to be honest. All for attention. There are many kids in this area including my own and they should be first priority at all times for safety. Hope we see some change coming as it’s needed.Drivers, please use your eyes and ears. If you see pedestrians walking or crossing, MAKE EYE CONTACT and let them know you see them. It’s such an easy thing to do, and really doesn’t take much of your precious time.

I’ve been trying for 2 years to get a cross walk here!! It’s so dangerous!here’s my email from 2017; when the center turning lane was removed; I got a case number, but nothing has been done (obviously).

I’m a  Lafayette, and soon to be Madison (in the fall) parent. As you all know the population of West Seattle is swelling!! The roads are busier, and there are more cars zooming around West Seattle than ever before! Admiral Way was recently re-tooled. The road is now a 2 lane road with no center divide. The result: cars are going FASTER than ever. I am appealing to SDOT to put in a cross walk on 45th Ave SW- I’d love if it were also a school zone (20 miles an hour at drop off/pick up with blinking lights) for Lafayette. Several years ago Lafayette Elementary School designated the back entrance 45th Ave and SW Lander, for drop off and pick up. All of the cross walks and school zones are on California Ave SW when in fact Lafayette families use Admiral Way as the main access to school. Cross walk appeal points:-Lafayette changed their policies a few year ago, ALL children are to be dropped off and picked up on 45th and SW Lander.-Admiral Way was recently changed, cars go MUCH faster now, and there is no center divide to wait for a safe crossing.-Many of Lafayette & Madison’s school children & families live on the North side of Admiral Way, Lafayette & Madison are on the South side of Admiral and there is no safe place for the children to cross to enter the back (and main entrances) for school drop off and pick up.-Madison children are also crossing Admiral Way, many without parent supervision. Madison is at 3429 45th Ave SW, Seattle, WA 98116-Many bus riders also cross from the North Side of Admiral to the South to ride the busses to down town.-Every day I see MANY residents of the Admiral Neighborhood (children and adults alike) running across Admiral Way from North to South, or South to North, in and around 45th Ave SW. It is only a matter of time before a pedestrian is struck and killed by a car!-A cross walk on Admiral Way and 45th AVE SW is a safety necessity for our community -SDOT should also consider making this a school zone for Lafayette.

Yes Sarah! I totally agree.  45th needs a crosswalk.  I’ve voted for that space.  Stupid process, should have been done years ago!

      • Lynn September 7, 2019 (1:44 am)

Agree! Why is it so hard to get something implement here?! People heading to Alki just FLY up and down this street like maniacs. Its so obnoxious and unsafe. When is change going to come? Or do they need more deaths and then they will pay attention to the problem?

  • Pedestrian September 4, 2019 (4:54 pm)

Drivers should be more attentive on the first day of school.

  • Mj September 4, 2019 (5:43 pm)

Crossing at 46th is best done on the west side of the intersection, better sight lines.

  • Charlie September 4, 2019 (7:04 pm)

This is terrible and I hope everyone is OK. Everyday I cross Admiral to get to the bus stop. I’m amazed at some of the drivers. Even when I’m halfy across the street some drivers speed up and swerve around me instead of just stopping. It’s mind bogglingly reckless and I’m surprised I have not been hit already. One strategy I have found that seems to work is to hold up my phone as if I am video recording the traffic as I cross. It’s ridiculous to do, but drivers do seem to instantly recognize this body language and act with more accountability.

I am a Lafayette elementary school parent and our walking school bus school crosses at 45th and Admiral every morning.  I along with Sarah (above) petitioned for a crosswalk at 45th and Admiral Way in 2017.  WSB, we would like to draw attention to this intersection again to petition for a crosswalk.  I will have a child walking to Madison next fall!   We are rallying the Girl Scouts and other neighborhood kids with safe crossing signs in the morning before school.  Can you cover us tomorrow morning 9/6 @7:30am-8am?  Come join us neighbors! Bring your safe crossing signs which can be picked up at the SW Community Center.

    • WSB September 5, 2019 (9:21 am)

      Of course.

    • Guy Olson September 6, 2019 (2:08 pm)

Why don’t you use a intersection that is already marked?

    • Lynn September 7, 2019 (1:47 am)

I wish i saw this, would have totally showed up to support. I am also a Lafayette mom, son starts kindy on Monday.  What do we need to do to press for a light.  Also can something be done about those lunatics speeding up and down on California and Admiral Way. So sick of them.

    • Gordon September 10, 2019 (10:31 am)

Hollye,Thank you for leading this rally to bring attention to safe crossings for kids, seniors, and everybody in between. I’d love to get in touch to see how the organization I work for, Seattle Neighborhood Greenways, can help. Can you email me at info@seattlegreenways.org? Thanks!Gordon Padelfordhttp://seattlegreenways.org

  • HOLLYE September 5, 2019 (3:47 pm)

     Thank you, WSB!

    • Hollye Bondurant September 5, 2019 (7:33 pm)

We have so much community support! Senator Joe Nguyen is coming! This is a quick turn around but anyway to publicize this further? Thank you WSB!

  • K. Davis September 5, 2019 (9:50 pm)

Sorry to be the grouch, but we do NOT need a further traffic impediment on Admiral way.  Two blocks away is a lighted intersection with patrolled crosswalks during school hours.  Creating further backups on Admiral Way is a bad idea.

    • Lynn September 7, 2019 (1:49 am)

We DO need a light. People have been hit on this road many times, someone died some years ago near Admiral Way and 48th or 49th. There is no need to speed on this road. You can afford to stop a few times if it means children and people are safer for it.

      • Kathy September 7, 2019 (11:11 am)

I heard a rumor that the senior citizen hit at 57th and Admiral Way on July 15th while crossing to the bus stop also  didn’t make it.  Regarding safe routes to Lafayette School, what about the leading pedestrian interval signaling we have long been promised between Lafayette and Hiawatha Park? I crossed there the other day and it has still not been implemented. When?Drivers, stop acting like these roads are your personal freeway instead of a residential area. Get some patience, allow plenty of time for your trips, obey the speed limits and always be on the lookout for vulnerable street users, they have just as much right to cross the road as you have to drive down it. If driver behavior were better we wouldn’t need so many road safety redesigns, but we seem to have no control over that.

        • WSB September 7, 2019 (11:48 am)

If that’s so, that’s three pedestrian deaths this year in WS, all seniors. I never got a name for that person so following up was close to impossible but I will try again.

  • PatsFanPNW September 5, 2019 (10:46 pm)

Where is SPD and speed enforcement on Admiral Way?  In my five years here, I have never seen them other than on the hill up from the bridge which is pretty worthless considering the minimal pedestrian traffic there.  What say you Ms. Herbold?

    • Ray K September 8, 2019 (7:18 am)

Where is speed enforcement anywhere in Seattle?

  • Wes C. Addle September 6, 2019 (9:35 am)

My concern is more with the drivers.  Seems like even when there is a crosswalk, no cars ever stop.  Whether they are young, old, on phones, or staring right at you.

  • Susan September 6, 2019 (9:03 pm)

It’s sad to see how the explosive growth has impacted our once quiet community. Admiral is now an overcrowded speedway. After 4 it’s a challenge to make a right hand turn on Admiral from northern cross streets, the line of cars is non-stop. I’ve seen some incredibly reckless drivers drag racing up from Alki the past few months. Something tragic is going to happen if changes aren’t made on this road soon. I also requested added safety measures (raised height like in the Junction or flashing lights) on the crosswalk at College and California, another spot that’s become dangerous to cross.

Sorry, comment time is over.
