On a day like today, who can resist thinking about summer? The Admiral Neighborhood Association is looking ahead too and has opened vendor applications for this year’s Admiral Block Party. The date is Saturday, August 22, and the location is California SW north of Admiral Way. ANA’s Dan Jacobs tells WSB, “Our application for Vendors is open and beginning to fill up. Space is limited so jump in as soon as you can so you don’t miss out.” You’ll find the form on the Block Party’s main page on the ANA website.

In 2007, SDOT removed a marked crosswalk on Fauntleroy Way at SW Rose Street, mid-Lincoln Park.
Community members long lobbied to bring back a safer crossing, and SDOT long said they couldn’t/wouldn’t.
Then the department relented, and last year unveiled a design that was far more complex than a crosswalk, including a raised median between the ferry holding (outside southbound) lane and travel lanes. Here’s what they showed at the time:

The Fauntleroy Community Association and Morgan Community Association have voiced concerns about the design, a regular discussion topic at recent meetings, and want to know what you think, so they have just announced a community forum with SDOT for this Wednesday (May 6), 5:30 pm at Southwest Library (9010 35th SW).

Both of these sighting reports came in via text today, both from the Westwood vicinity:
I spotted two coyotes last night about 10:45 at 31st SW and Cloverdale. I was walking my dog and they didn’t seem to take much notice of us. They came around the corner of 31st and headed west on Cloverdale toward 35th SW.
Shortly thereafter, another texter had this sighting:
Pack of three coyotes was seen around 11 pm. All were quickly moving south down 31st Ave SW.crossing Thistle.

Reviewing the descriptions is one of our favorite things about coordinating West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day, which is now six days away – next Saturday, May 9, with a WSCGSD-record 640+ sales of all sizes and types, all around West Seattle and a bit beyond. They’re all on the map, which you can explore here, and on the 38-page printable (PDF) list, which you’ll find here. Both versions are searchable if there’s something in particular you’re looking for – at least in topline terms like clothing, furniture, baby stuff, camping gear – or if you want to stay close to home, even something as simple as walking to the nearest sale and meeting a neighbor, you can check the clickable map to see what’s near you, and click on any marker to open the infobubble with its address and description. Back to the point of creativity – we also note classic garage-sale terms – this year’s descriptions include five promising “ephemera” (162, 271, 316, 338, 428), seven with “knickknacks” (146, 160, 197, 34, 462, 552, 641), two with “tchotchkes” (21, 146), and one with “bric-a-brac” (291). The word “vintage” appears in 97 descriptions, far outranking “antique,” which appears in 36. Instructions for searching descriptions via the map are below it; we’ll roll out some lists as the week goes on – starting with nonprofit/benefits and a few others.

The four corners this year are – northernmost sale is #163 in North Admiral (whose host says they’re a repeat WSCGSD participant), westernmost sale #303 inland from Alki Point, easternmost sale #83 in South Park (Floor Coverings International), and southernmost sale #636, a repeat seller in Seola.

Today my son picked up a journal that has been sitting on the side of the road at Admiral and 42nd for a couple of days. A quick scan reveals no name or phone number in the journal (though we didn’t search closely). I’d like to find the owner as this seems like it’s important to someone.

When Thunder Road Guitars (WSB sponsor) proprietor Frank Gross announced his shop’s upcoming move to a bigger new home in The Admiral District, he also announced his current location in Morgan Junction already has a new tenant, Northwest Fitness Project, which describes itself as a “personalized strength-training studio.” Four months have passed since first word of their plan, and now NWFP’s proprietors have sent updates: They’re planning to open at 6400 California SW on July 11, with an open house that “will include classes, movement assessments, bodywork, exclusive merch, and more, with further details to come.” Also, co-owner Jeremy Stewart and executive trainer Steven Pust (both West Seattle residents, shown above) are looking for another executive trainer to join the team in “a full-time training role, not a sales role, to focus on leading small-group classes and working with a roster of personal training clients.” You can go here to find out more about the opening. NW Fitness Project was founded in Fremont eight years ago; the West Seattle studio is an expansion.

Want to walk or run a 5K with your furry BFF? The West Seattle 5K is for you. It’s now just two weeks away – Sunday, May 17, along Alki, raising money for (and coordinated by) the West Seattle High School PTSA. The runners and walkers take off from 61st SW and Alki SW around 9:30 am on race day, heading northeastward to the turnaround by Anchor/Luna Park, and back. WSB is among the West Seattle 5K’s community co-sponsors again this year. If you’re not already registered, do it before next Sunday (May 10) to avoid the final-week price increase! (And to be sure you’re one of the first 1,200 paid registrants, who all get T-shirts.) Also – if you want to avoid the race-morning lines to get your bib, shirt, etc. right before the race, set your calendar for May 16, when you can get all that at West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW, WS5K co-sponsor and WSB sponsor) the day before race day, noon-5 pm. The blossoms are only part of the reason to visit the Seattle Chinese Garden this afternoon as the annual Peony Festival continues. If you need refuge from the sunshine as the temperature heads toward the 80s, there are craft and tea demonstrations under canopies in the courtyard:

Join Feet First volunteer Liz Steen for a walk in West Seattle. The 3.8 mile trek will start at 10 AM Sunday, May 3rd, by the swings, at the waterfront near Lincoln Park parking lot, number two, near the ferry landing. Walkers will traverse mostly flat terrain to enjoy parks and views – perhaps including some whales – including Lincoln Park, Lowman Beach, Me-Kwa-Mooks Park, Constellation Park, and the Charles Ritchie Senior viewpoint. The one-way walk should take about 90 minutes and end at Alki Beach Park, where participants can get lunch before retracing the waterfront to Lincoln Park or arranging for a ride back. No registration necessary, and people can join along the way at any park, if they like.

Annie Olson is one of the firefighters on duty today at Station 11, 16th SW and SW Holden in Highland Park, one of the SFD stations all over the city open to visitors right now as part of the city’s Neighbor Day. Station 11 is one of five fire stations (11, 29, 32, 36, 37) in West Seattle; firefighters remain on duty, and it’s been a busy day, so we can’t guarantee who you’ll see when you visit one – the open house lasts until 3 pm. (More pics later.)

11:47 AM: Thanks for the tips and sorry to be late on this. The “scenes of violence” call around 11 am in the 7900 block of Delridge Way was dispatched as a domestic-violence attack – a 41-year=old man allegedly attacking his mother, allegedly armed with a knife. Police know who they are looking for, a man described so far as 41 years old, white, 5’10”, and unclothed. Our crew just got there and says police are outside the residence trying to get the suspect to come out, making announcements via loudspeaker.
12:07 PM: Police are setting up a command post. Our crew says traffic is still being allowed through the area on Delridge.
12:29 PM: Our crew nearby says they’re still trying to talk the suspect out – assuming he’s inside – it’s not clear how certain they are of that.
1:17 PM: SFD tells us the victim is a 61-year-old woman who was in stable condition when taken to the hospital. No word yet on the status of the suspect.
1:24 PM: Now they’re closing Delridge between Holden and Thistle.
2:21 PM: SPD SWAT is on scene.
2:49 PM: Our crew says officers have gone into the house, with a K-9.
3:23 PM: Our crew reports the officers are back outside now.
3:28 PM: And now SWAT is leaving.
3:36 PM: Our crew reports that other police have left and Delridge has reopened, with no one detained so far as we have seen.
It’s been a busy morning, but as promised, we finalized the map and list for West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day 2026, and have published both the interactive map an the printable list of sales (a record 644 sales, 38 pages!). -WSCGSD is always (since 2005) the second Saturday in May – this year, that’s May 9th
-Official sale hours are 9 am-3 pm, but as you’ll see in the listings, some are starting earlier and/or ending later, and some are adding extra days
-The listings are those of sellers who registered between April 1 and April 22 – all sizes and types of sales, all around the area!
What we do from here is continue to get the word out – we do that in myriad ways, including WSB stories plus posters and ads – and since we’ve had the benefit of having read all 640+ listings, we will be making lists of sales with certain features or focuses. We’ll also get a note out to sellers later today including, if interested, the template for your “Official Sale” sign. Updates to come!
6:36 AM: Also in the pre-dawn hours, a carjacking on Harbor Avenue SW, on the first night of new “summer safety” hours from Alki Beach Park to Don Armeni Boat Ramp (a short distance east of where this happened). Thanks for the tip on this; according to archived police radio, the initial report came in as a driver hitting a parked vehicle in the 1000 block of Harbor Avenue just before 4 am. Reports then came in about a driver being carjacked at the scene and suspect(s) taking off in that vehicle, described as a gray Chrysler Pacifica. At least one was reported to be armed; one 911 caller had reported hearing possible shots but police say they found no evidence, or witnesses, of gunfire. As this was all being investigated, police found a different vehicle (update, not clear yet if this was a different scene), a Toyota sedan, that had been stolen in a South Seattle carjacking earlier in the night. We’re asking police for more info on all this, and also sorting through photos sent by the tipster (thank you).

5:22 AM: Thanks for the tips. The eastbound West Seattle Bridge is blocked by the aftermath of a crash and drivers are being diverted to 99.

5:29 AM: The crash scene is east of 99. Only crash on the SFD log was near the 4th Avenue exit just after 2 am,
5:39 AM: Police have just reopened the eastbound bridge. … According to archived police radio, SFD closed the entire bridge aroun 3:40 am for safety reasons – because “multiple vehicles” passing the scene pre-closure almost hit them.
7:09 AM: An SFD spokesperson just told us “there were no patients” at the scene. So we’re still trying to solve the mystery of why one fire unit was there for two hours.
7:33 AM: SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty elaborates, “It was a non-injury collision but the vehicle was not able to move. The crew was at the collision site until SPD was able to respond so they could hand the scene over. The crew ended up blocking lanes for safety due to the high rate of speed drivers kept passing the incident.”

“A lot has changed over 50 years, but what hasn’t changed is our commitment to showing up for people during the hardest moments of their lives,” said Transitional Resources board president Ken Bailey as the nonprofit celebrated its first half-century Thursday evening..
Transitional Resources is a West Seattle based non-profit blending housing and behavioral health services, has been around since 1976, and gathered supporters at Georgetown Stables to celebrate and donate.
Centered just south of the Luna Park district, Transitional Resources has developed unique programs to aid clients in various stages of their journeys. Among these is TRY House, a 15-bed program and assisted living facility in West Seattle. This specific program is catered toward adults with higher support needs. The organization also offers a supportive housing program, allowing residents to live independently in community-integrated homes close to Transitional Housing’s treatment teams and services.
Bailey explained to attendees how Transitional Resources came about decades ago, with a brief story about Sister Elaine Smith. She saw a gap in the resources available to fit her sister’s ongoing needs. This led to a space created for young adults experiencing mental illness to live and receive continued support, with the end goal of transitioning back into the community:
“What we’re celebrating is the outcome that the model has helped to achieve. We celebrate the first move, after years of cycling through crisis services, finally walking into their very own apartment and feeling like they could breathe again.”
Bailey urged the audience to “stay engaged,” as while Transitional Resources is celebrating its undeniable impact on those in need, that this need is not going to go away. “Please help us keep these stories going,” he said.
Transitional Resources is going through a transitional period of their own right now, with the announcement in January of longtime CEO Darcell Slovek-Walker’s retirement effective June 30th.
Slovek-Walker has worked in the behavioral-health realm for 40 years, serving as Transitional Resource’s CEO for the last 22. A post on the organization’s website expressed immense gratitude for the heart that she put into her work, the organization, and the community.
“She has ensured a safe space for clients to live with respect and dignity, has cared for the wellbeing of the staff, and has been an advocate for behavioral health support and housing throughout King County,” Bailey wrote in the post.
Transitional Resources has not yet announced a successor for its departing CEO.
