After a decade, Community Acupuncture Project of West Seattle is closing its office in The Junction (4545 44th SW). Tomorrow’s the last day. But the CAP itself is very much alive and kicking – just consolidating into its Burien office. Here’s how it first announced the closure to clients:

After 10 years in the Junction, the Community Acupuncture Project will be closing our West Seattle location at the end of July. We have loved this community deeply and we are saddened to be closing our West Seattle doors. West Seattle and our clinic have seen a lot of changes over the past decade: major construction, the bridge closure, the pandemic, and more development! Sadly, we no longer have any staff living in West Seattle or White Center, and the structural needs of our space have been challenging, to say the least.

This has not been an easy decision and we are grieving the loss.

To all our patients, volunteers, and supporters from this neighborhood, who love and care for West Seattle, we are so grateful for your love and encouragement over the years.

We look forward to continuing to provide affordable acupuncture to the community from our Burien location and will be expanding our hours in Burien and growing that clinic.

We are happy to share that Aiko, Samantha, Dionea, Haley, and Sonja will continue to practice at this location and you can keep getting treatments from all your familiar acupuncturists – just in Burien. If you haven’t visited 1800 SW 152nd St, the clinic is half a mile west of Ambaum, in the Seahurst neighborhood. We have a free parking lot, two ADA-accessible bathrooms, no stairs, recliners, and tables ready for you in a cozy setting. Come check us out! You can read more at: acupunctureforall.org/burien

Thank you for all your support, West Seattle. We hope to see you in our Burien location, just 8 miles down the road!

As of Saturday, the CAP’s hours in Burien will be 9 am-2 pm Saturdays, 10 am-3 pm Sundays, 2-7 pm Mondays and Wednesdays, 10 am-1 pm and 3 pm-7 pm Tuesdays, 10 am-7 pm Thursdays, closed Fridays.

King County Public Health shuts down 5 food sellers at Alki

In our report on this month’s Alki Community Council meeting, we noted a Seattle Parks manager mentioning a problem with “illegal food vendors” at the beach. Some readers wondered why King County Public Health hadn’t done anything about that. Now the agency has, according to an announcement we just received:

A Public Health food inspector found 5 food establishments operating at Alki Beach in Seattle without a valid food establishment permit on Saturday, July 24th and were directed to immediately cease food and beverage services. These establishments include:

Botanas Locas closed July 24, 2021 at 12:20 pm
Chopped N Skewed closed July 24, 2021 at 1:55 pm
Marco Morales Stand closed July 24, 2021 at 1:55 pm
Nieves De Garrafa closed July 24, 2021 at 2:10 pm
Ivonne Pineda’s Stand closed July 24, 2021 at 2:40 pm

These establishments will be allowed to reopen once the person in charge of each business completes the 3-Step Plan Review process to secure a mobile food services permit (which also applies to food carts and stands) per the instructions online at kingcounty.gov/foodsafety/mobile

This came in too late for followup questions tonight but we’ll be pursuing a few tomorrow.

UPDATE: Sewer break fouls Puget Sound off Beach Drive

(Photo from @quapet via Twitter)

3:10 PM: Thanks for the tip and photo. That signage went up at Cormorant Cove Park in the 3700 block of Beach Drive SW – and we just got this Seattle Public Utilities notification explaining why:

Today Seattle Public Utilities responded to a sewer overflow due to a broken side sewer located along Beach Dr near Cormorant Cove. As a result, beaches in the area will be closed to water activities, including Cormorant Cove as well as the beach access at Beach Dr. SW/63rd Ave SW in West Seattle.

Staff will sample the water and work with Public Health-Seattle & King County and Seattle Parks Department to determine when the area can be safely reopened. SPU will provide an update when we have more information. Seattle Public Utilities is working with the property owner to ensure a timely repair of the side sewer.

If you find flooding or sewer backups, please report them to the SPU 24/7 Operations Response Center at 206-386-1800.

5:56 PM: We went down to the shore to check the extent of the signage. It continues northward at Constellation Park, beyond 63rd/Beach:

 |   Health | How to help | West Seattle news

If you can donate blood, now’s the time. You can even set an appointment for upcoming West Seattle pop-ups, to donate without leaving the peninsula. Here’s the message Bloodworks Northwest asked us to share:

Transfusion rates are 10% higher than normal due to hospitals catching up on a backlog of procedures from COVID. Meanwhile, our community blood supply is at precarious levels due to the PNW heatwave which caused many donors to cancel or no-show to appointments. Additionally some donation sites had to close due to A/C in the room not being able to keep up with the extreme outside temperatures.

Now, more than ever, we need to be community-ready and strengthen our blood supply. Every person can do more this summer for our community. With every donation, we can save more lives in our community. Join us by donating blood every time you’re eligible to give and learn more about how you can win incredible prizes at savemorelivesgiveblood.org (fill out form to enter).

When you donate during the month of July, you will automatically be entered to win a Peloton Bike! More info HERE.

Masks and appointments are required. Please sign up NOW at one of these West Seattle locations/dates!

FOLLOWUP: Delridge/Roxbury sidewalk camp shrinks, as health problems shelve removal plan

ORIGINAL MONDAY REPORT: More than a week after our last report on the sidewalk-blocking camp along Delridge just north of Roxbury, the site now has about half the number of tents that were there at its peak – down to about half a dozen as of early this afternoon. A texter reported seeing a city crew there earlier in the day. Before that text, we already had inquiries out to both SDOT and the Human Services Department – the former would be accountable for prioritizing (or not) the site for removal, under city policies leaving that up to departments that “own” individual sites, while the latter would be involved with services and outreach. First we heard back from HSD spokesperson Kevin Mundt, who said the camp was to be removed this week until a health situation led to a postponement:

Urban League, REACH, and the CCS Scope team outreach workers were at the Roxbury & Delridge location last week, in coordination with the HOPE Team. REACH made two referrals from the location to the Executive Hotel Pacific enhanced shelter on Thursday (May 13). As of last week, it was estimated that seven to ten people were residing in the encampment.

During the course of this outreach, providers notified the HOPE Team of individuals in the encampment who appeared sick with a gastrointestinal illness. Once notified, the HOPE Team shared this information with Public Health, who is investigating. Per recommendations from Public Health, a removal of the Delridge & Roxbury encampment planned for this week was postponed. The HOPE Team is encouraging outreach providers to continue their engagement at the site in the meantime.

Once a site is identified as a priority location by our City department partners, the HOPE Team shares that information with providers and directs outreach to those locations in an attempt to have the site be encampment free through outreach strategies alone. If necessary, a site may be subject to a removal under the MDARs.

That stands for Multi-Department Administrative Rules, the city policies that cover “unauthorized camping on city properties,” among other things (read them here). The HOPE Team is explained here.

SDOT, meantime, said a response to our inquiry would come from the mayor’s office, and that just arrived, from spokesperson Rachel Schulkin, explaining the city-crew sighting:

Today, REACH, a City-contracted outreach provider, contacted the Clean City initiative to request items they identified as trash and debris at the Roxbury and Delridge encampment be removed. Per the request, a Clean City Parks crew identified the items (with assistance from the outreach workers) on site and removed the debris from the encampment. Individuals residing on site were not asked to move and their property was left. As mentioned previously, there is no current scheduled removal for the encampment.

Two of the remaining tents are in front of White Center Glass, whose proprietor Abby Fisher was the latest to surface the sidewalk-blocking camp to the city. Of the newest developments, she says, “While that hasn’t improved as much as we would like to see – it is progress.” We’re following up separately with Seattle-King County Public Health to see what their investigation entails.

TUESDAY EVENING UPDATE: The camp is even smaller tonight – a few tents at the south end of the block. We’ve heard from the CoLEAD program, which has been working with the sidewalk residents, and expect to learn more tomorrow about how that has unfolded.

Junction Dental: Welcome. new West Seattle Blog sponsor!

Today we welcome Junction Dental as a new WSB sponsor. That means they get to tell you about what they do:

From Peter Iversen, DDS, the owner of Junction Dental: We are a comprehensive general dental practice located in the Jefferson Square Professional Building (4700 42nd SW). My wife and children and I have lived, worked and played in West Seattle since 2013 and I am excited for the opportunity to support our growing community. Some of you may know the previous owner / practice, Dr. Kari Chellis/“Smile Secrets,” who provided great care for over 20 years at this same location.

To say that starting a business just prior to the COVID-19 pandemic “would be hard” is an understatement. I purchased the practice in October 2019 and have been striving to provide good, honest, down-to-earth dentistry. I love creating practical healthy outcomes and convenience for my patients with compassion and clarity. Junction Dental offers “same-day” crown technology and has an amazing staff, some of whom grew up locally in WS. Our hygienists are wonderfully calm, funny, and thorough!

Our community of local dental specialists and other general dentists are amazing. Everyone I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and networking with has shown me that the oral health of West Seattle will be well supported for years to come. We have all appreciated the trust and support the WS community has shown throughout the pandemic for our businesses and are proud as a profession to have universal safety precautions in place which make dental offices some of the safest facilities to return to.

We currently have openings to accommodate new patients or emergencies. Whether you are a new or returning patient, I look forward to meeting you soon. Give us a call – 206-935-5522 – and Corinne or Gisela will take care of you! (PS. I love discussing anything astrophotography, science, physics, and snowboarding related :)

We thank Junction Dental for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

FOLLOWUP: Drug Take-Back Day results, and what to do if you missed it

(L-R, DEA investigator Craig Tom, SPD Officer Matthew Roberson, SW Precinct Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner, Southwest Seattle Youth Alliance’s Lensy Cordova)

The photo is from this past Saturday’s Drug Take-Back Day event outside the Southwest Precinct – sent by Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Danner along with the results, and what you can do with unwanted/unneeded/expired medications if you missed it. Dropoffs filled 9 boxes, totaling 295 pounds. That’s more than the other Seattle location, the North Precinct, with 286 pounds. You don’t have to wait until the next Drug Take-Back Day if you still have something to get rid of – this flyer (in English y en Español) lists year-round locations including the pharmacies at QFC in The Junction (4550 42nd SW) and Walgreens in High Point (6330 35th).\

‘CODE RED’ ALERT: If you can donate blood, it’s needed now – and West Seattle appointments are coming up too

Bloodworks Northwest has sent out a “red alert” for blood donations. Here’s why:

A “perfect storm” of unforeseen events continues to impact local and nationwide blood availability leading Bloodworks Northwest to declare a code-red for alert for donors to book appointments. As detailed by Bloodworks CEO Curt Bailey in recent outreach to Pacific Northwest community leaders:

“Confusion over eligibility to donate after receiving the COVID-19 vaccine (vaccinated people can still donate!), record-high patient usage (up to 118% above normal), warm spring weather (when donors tend to skip appointments), and a national blood shortage (help from other parts of the country is limited or uncertain) [are contributing to] the biggest shortage since the pandemic began a year ago, with less than a 24-hour supply of blood on the shelves.”

You can make an appointment to donate by going here.

P.S. If you can’t donate right now, Bloodworks NW plans pop-up donation opportunities at Salty’s on Alki (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor) May 3, 4, 5, 10, and 11 – you can make an appointment for one of those dates now too.

SATURDAY: Drug Take-Back Day outside Southwest Precinct

Got expired and/or no-longer-needed medications – prescription or not? The Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster) is one of two collection points in the city for National Drug Take-Back Day this Saturday (April 24th), 10 am-2 pm. The announcement:

Too often, unused prescription drugs find their way into the wrong hands. That’s dangerous and often tragic. That’s why it was great to see thousands of folks from across the country clean out their medicine cabinets and turn in – safely and anonymously – a record amount of prescription drugs.

Please bring your unwanted and/or expired medications (no questions asked) … on Saturday, April 24th.

We will also have a variety of crime prevention and informational materials available for pickup.

The precinct confirms they can take liquids as well as pills, and also vape devices (but not the part with a battery). Just go to the front parking lot – dropoff is outdoors and distanced.

Reduce Duwamish River cleanup? Comments due by tomorrow night

(WSB file photo, Duwamish River seen from high-rise West Seattle Bridge)

If you have something to say about the Environmental Protection Agency‘s proposal to reduce the Duwamish River cleanup area because of a new health-risk standard for a particular pollutant, time is running out. Last time we reported on the comment period, two weeks ago, it was extended one more time, but that’s not expected to happen again. The Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition has published its comments online here, voicing opposition to the change: “DRCC has concerns about this proposal and is opposed to its execution,” says spokesperson Robin Schwartz. Among its concerns is uncertainty among the scientific community over the actual cancer risk of the pollutant involved in the proposed change, benzo(a)pyrene. The DRCC letter says, “To us, it appears that EPA is taking a large risk that could affect human health in an environmental justice community for such a small change (0.33% or $1,117,000) in the overall cleanup costs.” If you’re interested in signing onto the DRCC letter, you can do that here. If you have a comment of your own, send it to Region10@epa.gov by midnight Wednesday night (April 21st).

P.S. If you missed previous coverage, here’s our report on the EPA’s explanatory meeting in February.

UPDATE: Reduce the Duwamish River cleanup? Comment period just extended again

(EPA slide explaining ways in which people come into contact with pollutants)

If you have something to say to the Environmental Protection Agency about a plan to reduce the Duwamish River cleanup, today’s your last chance. (10:36 AM UPDATE: This has just been extended until April 21st.)

We reported back in February on the proposal to remove scattered areas totaling about five acres (not yet mapped) from the cleanup zone because the government increased the allowable level of a particular pollutant – benzo(a)pyrene (BaP), a “carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (cPAH).” On the night of the EPA community meeting we covered, the agency agreed to extend the public-comment window, and has since extended it again, but the deadline is tonight.

The reminder came in emails from two interested parties sharing the comment letters they have just submitted. The first is from BJ Cummings, longtime area advocate, who points out “significant questions about the scientific merit of the BaP reassessment” as well as a lack of time for discussion with community members who will be most affected by a cleanup change, which would leave a higher level of the substance in shellfish. Here’s her comment letter:

She refers to comments from an unofficial community coalition called the Duwamish River Accountability Group, which also sent us their letter:

That group’s points also include the time frame as well as the fact the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition, an official advisory group, only released its own fact sheet on the proposal about a week ago;

The DRCC fact sheet also notes that the scientists from the UW are concerned that “inconsistent results” among studies including those that led to the proposal to change the cleanup “means that there is still a high level of uncertainty about the cancer risk of BaP.”

As linked in our February report, the full document for review is here; an explanatory one-sheet is here. If you are interested in commenting, 11:59 pm tonight April 21 is the deadline to send email to Region10@epa.gov.

Ren Reiki in West Seattle: Welcome, new WSB sponsor!

Today we welcome Ren Reiki as a new WSB sponsor. Here’s what Jill would like you to know about what she offers:

First of all, there are many amazing energy healers in and around Seattle. I’m thankful to be part of the community. I think people should choose me because they resonate with my philosophy and spirit. Reiki is a beautiful type of healing that is gentle and can be done in conjunction with other therapies, such as massage, physical therapy, behavioral therapy, or counseling. It activates and encourages your body’s natural healing abilities and can even be used pre- or post-operations and procedures.

I believe that many of us have experienced physical, mental, or emotional trauma or chronic stress. This can manifest in physical issues. The sense of calm and peace Reiki can bring helps give many a heart-centered perspective.

My clients say that I have a calming demeanor and a kind, compassionate nature. I always strive to be a place of ease for those who visit and many say I have lightened their mental state and find themselves smiling, by the time they leave.

Because Reiki is gentle, the changes felt might be subtle. Maybe that week you feel uplifted and focused, enjoying the little things more. Maybe your mind hasn’t been a hamster wheel of stress and “what-if’s.” Perhaps you realize a few days later, that chronic pain doesn’t seem as bad.

Reiki is kind of like a walk at the beach. For some, it’s a few random times a year that feel right. For others, it can be weekly while going through a tough time (like divorce or grief). It’s different for everyone. We’ll work together to find what’s right for you. I am a West Seattle girl, born and raised. I’m also a member of the International Association of Reiki Professionals.

Find out more about Ren Reiki at renreikiws.com, where you can book an appointment online, or call 206-313-9941.

We thank Ren Reiki for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news via WSB; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here, and find info on joining the team by going here.

Make sure your students are up to date on their vaccines! The West Seattle Teen Health Center (located right inside of West Seattle High School) offers free vaccines to any SPS student. On March 25th, we’re doing an event dedicated to Meningococcal (MCV) vaccines. Students are recommended to have one at 11/12 years old and a booster at 16 years old. Give us a call or contact your primary care physician to get an appointment scheduled or for more information! Unsure if your student has already had one? Give us a call and we can doublecheck! Miss this event but still need vaccines? Send us an email or call to schedule another time! hgsamet@seattleschools.org or call/text 206-471-6263.

HEALTH CARE: Another provider taking over soon-to-be-ex-Swedish space in West Seattle

(King County Assessor photo)

The West Seattle space that Swedish is vacating at 3400 California SW will remain a health-care clinic. We’ve been covering the plan for Swedish to move into The Junction but didn’t know until today what would happen to the building it’s leaving. Here’s the announcement we received:

Virginia Mason Franciscan Health is announcing the opening of a new medical clinic in West Seattle this fall. This facility will expand options for new and existing patients in the community as the closure of the West Seattle Bridge creates a barrier for residents to access quality health services close to home.

The new facility will house primary care, internal medicine, laboratory and limited radiology services.

Specialty services will rotate weekly and will include:

Cardiology
Orthopedics
General surgery
Gastroenterology
Endocrinology
Women’s health

In addition to the clinic, West Seattle patients will have integrated access to nearby St. Anne Hospital if needed, as well as on-site specialists from our network, including legacy Virginia Mason and CHI Franciscan locations.

Virginia Mason became part of CHI Franciscan earlier this year. Meantime, Swedish is moving providers into two Junction sites, as reported here.
