CORONAVIRUS: Seattle Public Schools dashboard update shows fewer new cases this week

Seattle Public Schools‘ weekly COVID-19 dashboard update shows only about two-thirds as many new cases this past week as a week earlier. The new cumulative total is 276, up from 213 (the weekly total was adjusted downward by 1 at midweek last week, so while it was 214 last Monday as reported here, it fell later in the week to 213). That’s 63 new cases reported districtwide over the course of the week, compared to 96 new cases the previous week. Here are the school-by-school breakouts for our area, and changes from a week earlier – again, the numbers are cumulative for the entire school year this far:

Denny International Middle School – 10, up 4
Highland Park Elementary – 8, up 3
Chief Sealth International High School – 8, unchanged
Lafayette Elementary – 6, down 1
Roxhill Elementary – 6, unchanged
Gatewood Elementary – 4, up 1

Still no cases reported at Alki, Arbor Heights, or Concord International elementaries, according to the dashboard. The downward adjustment for Lafayette is unexplained, but one parent forwarded us a letter sent by the principal two weeks ago that said the district’s first report of cases at the school “showed cases that occurred during the summer.”

26th SW – Final week for northbound 26th SW closure between Roxbury and Barton; King County has set the date for directions to switch – next Monday, October 4th, they expect to reopen northbound and close southbound for about a month.

25th SW & Barton – More county-led RapidRide prep work.

Delridge project – No major work this week, so no roundup, SDOT says.

TRANSIT

Buses are on regular schedules today – except for the rerouting in RapidRide H Line work zones. Watch @kcmetrobus for word of canceled trips.

Eviction moratorium extended – By order of the mayor, who also told utilities to keep refraining from shutoffs.

Seattle Public Schools cases – The second dashboard update of the school year added almost 100 cases districtwide. Next update should happen later today.

Boosters or not? Here are the new recommendations for certain categories of people who got the Pfizer vaccine (no booster recommendations for the other vaccines so far).

The UW Medicine testing service at the Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex parking lot (2801 SW Thistle) continues to operate; you can make an appointment here, though readers report walk-ups have been accepted. Meantime, the Curative testing kiosk at Don Armeni Boat Ramp (1222 Harbor SW) is also still operating. In addition, both West Seattle Walgreens stores are offering drive-up testing (35th/Morgan and 16th/Roxbury) – more info here.

UPDATE: Abandoned building burns at 16th/Barton

9:56 PM: SFD is sendng a “full response” to 16th/Barton for a structure fire. It’s in what’s reported to be a vacant building. Updates to come.

10 PM: Firefighters report they’ve “knocked down” the fire. Avoid the area for a while.

10:08 PM: SFD is using “derelict building” guidelines. Meantime, the overview photo added above shows this is the old building on the northwest corner – Google Street View shows it with addresses 9059 and 9061 16th SW.

10:28 PM: City Light has arrived to shut down power to the building (which is a century old, according to property records). City records show a “notice of violation” was in progress after a recent complaint which said in part, “This vacant building is always full of garbage, rats, covered in graffiti, and poses a fire hazard.”

10:50 PM: Sent to us by readers, this Ring security-camera clip shows the fire starting to show from the south side of the building just as someone walks out of one of the front (east-facing) doors.

11:44 PM: All but three SFD units have left the scene.

10:40 AM MONDAY: Still waiting for word of the cause, but we went over this morning for a look at the aftermath.

11:31 AM: From SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo: “Our fire investigators ruled it as undetermined because they were unable to enter the building due to safety concerns. Per procedure for undetermined fires, we have shared this information with SPD’s Arson and Bomb Squad for followup.”

From scrapped speed bumps to port plans @ HPAC’s September meeting

Changes in the traffic-safety plan for 16th SW were part of what HPAC – the community council for Highland Park, Riverview, and South Delridge – heard about at its September meeting.

This was HPAC’s first meeting after summer break, led by co-chairs Kay Kirkpatrick and Craig Rankin. Before the updates from SDOT, a port team presented an update:

TERMINAL 5 & PORT OF SEATTLE: From the Northwest Seaport Alliance and/or Port of Seattle, Lindsay Wolpa, Peaches Thomas, Steve Balaski, T-5 program manager Emma Del Vento, and Curtis Stahlecker were all at the meeting. Wolpa gave a presentation, starting with an overview of the NWSA (the ports of Seattle and Tacoma) – 3 million cargo containers each year, 58,000 jobs – then recapped the T-5 project toplines. Balaski explained what the port’s trying to do to help with the worldwide supply-chain jam:

They are “feverishly working” on how to address this, and how to keep their export clients’ goods flowing.

FOLLOWUP: He did it! 17-year-old Herman Meyer’s ‘solo Ironman’ triathlon

As previewed here Friday, 17-year-old West Seattle High School senior Herman Meyer spent his Saturday swimming, biking, and running a “solo Ironman” triathlon. Family and friends posted as-it-happened updates and photos in the comment thread of the original report, but in case you weren’t following along, he finished in just over 16 and a half hours. Herman’s mom Katherine Meyer reported, “He started just after 8 am and finished strong at 12:40 am! He had to dig deep, and he did.” The day began with more than 2 miles of swimming off Alki:

Then 112 miles of bicycling (in loops around West Seattle):

And finally a marathon run:

That’s friend Riley Nachtrieb running with Herman, in a photo by Riley’s dad Erik Nachtrieb. In her preview of Herman’s “solo Ironman,’ published here Friday, Riley explained that Herman’s feat was simply out of personal motivation – “purely driven by his determination.”

1:37 PM: The proprietors of the food truck Spice on Curve texted to say their other truck was stolen this morning from the Super 24 lot at Delridge/Findlay. (Updated: Here are two photos of the truck):

Plate # is C41589U. The theft happened just after 5:30 this morning. No police report # yet but call 911 if you see it. (And if you live nearby and have anything on your security camera, let us know and we can connect you with the truck owners.)

ADDED 3:12 PM: We now have the SPD incident number – 21-254257.

ADDED TUESDAY MORNING: The truck was found in South Park. But its owners say “they destroyed a lot (and) took the generator.”

POWER OUTAGE: Southeast West Seattle pocket back on

Around 1:30 am, power went out for more than 6,000 customers, mostly in North Highline and Burien, but including a pocket at the east end of the Roxbury corridor, mostly along Olson Place.

Within about two hours, all but 40 customers were back on – but not the southeast West Seattle pocket. Seattle City Light says they’re finally back on after about 10 hours. We’ll be following up tomorrow on the outage’s ecact cause.

UPDATE: Car-on-side crash north of West Seattle Junction

1:22 AM: SPD and SFD are responding to what was dispatched as a car-on-side crash at California/Dakota. No word yet if anyone’s hurt.

1:26 AM: This is being upgraded to a “rescue extrication” response. Three people are reported to be inside the vehicle. California is blocked at Andover.

1:30 AM: The three people reported as trapped in the vehicle are all described as “alert and conscious.”

1:41 AM: Adding photos from WSB’s Katie Meyer at the scene. Firefighters are working to extricate the trapped people:

1:43 AM: “Patients extricated,” firefighters have just told dispatch.

10:30 AM: This is being investigated as DUI. Meantime, we’re still waiting to hear back from SFD on injuries.

1 PM: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo tells WSB, “All three occupants were in stable condition and declined transportation to a hospital.”

FOOTBALL: Another big win for West Seattle High School

The West Seattle High School Wildcats ran onto the field at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex tonight as an undefeated team, and that’s how they left it, with a 56-7 victory over the Kent Meridian HS Royals. #2, junior Elijah Brady, led the scoring tonight with four touchdowns.

His first one was less than a minute into the game.

Just a minute after that, the Royals got their one and only TD, and the score was fleetingly close, 8-7. But less than a minute and a half later, the Wildcats started pulling away, first with another Brady TD, then with the first of two touchdowns by #8, junior Mason Kallinger:

Second-quarter scoring included point-after kicks by #20, sophomore Kalei Scott:

Also in the photo above is #3, sophomore Bo Gionet, who snagged an interception with 1:44 to go in the first half. Second-quarter TDs were by Brady, Kallinger, and #31, senior Casey Maxwell. At halftime, head coach Jeff Scott‘s team was up 42-7.

The WSHS Cheer Squad performed at halftime:

The second half opened a lot like the first – a TD by Brady, just a minute and a half in, after a pass by #9, junior Axel Johnson.

Shortly thereafter, an interception by #4, junior Roman Centioli, set the stage for the Wildcats’ last touchdown, by #7, senior Will Godwin. No scoring in the fourth quarter, so 56-7 is how it ended. WSHS is now 3-0, and on the road next week, at Bishop Blanchet, 7 pm Friday (October 1st).

YOU CAN HELP: Crowdfunding for White Center’s fire-damaged Huong Xua Deli

Less than two weeks after the 3-alarm fire that destroyed the closed Locker Room in downtown White Center, its neighbor to the north, Huong Xua Deli, is still struggling to recover from damage. (Our photo above shows what it looked like inside hours after the fire.) So their neighbors to the north, Full Tilt Ice Cream proprietors Justin Cline and Ann Magyar, have launched a crowdfunding page for community donations to help Huong Xua reopen. The page features this message from the deli’s owners:

My name is Kevin Bui and my wife is Phuong Nguyen. I came to the US when I was young. Growing up, I didn’t have that many opportunities and wealth. I had to work to support me and my family. Even through the struggle, our culture brings happiness and everybody together. That is why I wanted to open a small business to share some cultural foods such as Bánh Mì, Bún Bò Huế, thịt Heo Quay (Roasted Pork) and many more foods. When we inherited the business from the previous owners, everything was still the same but got slower from the pandemic. Not too long ago, our Roasted Pork Sandwich got rated #1 as the best Bánh Mì in the Puget Sound from The Seattle Times. I could say this was a blessing. Our business got more customers coming from all over the state. Everything was going well until a fire that was spread to our Deli. There were 3 fires that happened in a span of 5 months, but this time, Hương Xưa Deli was affected and damaged by the water and fire retardant. Our friendly neighbor from Full Tilt, started this fundraiser to help us rebuild our deli. Our family’s income depends on this business. Anything will help, thank you all for your support, I hope we can rebuild a new Deli as soon as possible located in the spot where we are right now to serve to our lovely community in White Center.

P.S. Bizzarro Italian Café, south of the Locker Room, remains closed too (their Wallingford location remains open). King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Tim Meyer told us that investigators believe “smoking material” started the fire, as was the case with the April fire that closed the Locker Room.

BIZNOTE: Goodnight Pilates and Muscle Activation now open in north Morgan Junction

One of West Seattle’s newest businesses is now open at 5904 California SW: Goodnight Pilates and Muscle Activation. Proprietor Carrie Goodnight is occupying half the space that used to be DeSautel Chiropractic (now at 6553 California SW under the name Resolve Chiropractic.) Goodnight tells WSB, “After nearly 20 years of teaching Pilates (13 of them in West Seattle), I have expanded my skill set to include Muscle Activation Techniques.” She says combining Pilates with MAT (explained here) is a “powerful combination.” The new studio offers one-on-one lessons and bodywork, by appointment.

READER REPORT: 45th/Charlestown collision, and ongoing safety concerns

So many accidents and near misses at this corner in this school zone near Madison Middle. Every single day. Desperately needs a 4-way stop. Today it was a police car pulling out in front of a car (his fault, he acknowledged). No injuries.

Since most “minor” accidents aren’t reported, it is not seen by SDOT as a problem corner. Spend one day here and you will know. Especially worse now during the week, when West Seattle Elementary kids are heading to Schmitz Park [Elementary].

Time to look into this more seriously before someone is seriously hurt.

This happened just after 2:30 this afternoon. The intersection is one block east of the top of the steep Charlestown hill

Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex scoreboard now honors namesake

If you’re going to the West Seattle High School football game tonight vs. Kent Meridian, you’ll see that new feature at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex – the stadium’s full name is now on its scoreboard. The photo is from Mr. Cantu’s friend Doree Fazio-Young, who says the signage was installed this week and that the official dedication is expected next month; she also says West Seattle muralist Desmond Hansen is painting a portrait of Mr. Cantu for his memorial garden. Mr. Cantu, the stadium’s longtime grounds manager, died in 2018 at age 51; this past spring, the School Board approved naming the complex in his honor.

Dennis Williams Jr. was all smiles as 15 dodgeball teams got ready to play in the On Blast! tournament he’s leading at the lower playfield in Riverview right now.

This is all about saving lives – raising money for research into childhood cancer.

Dennis’s 5-year-old son Isaac was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma when he was just a year and a half old. Isaac wad treated by Seattle Children’s Hospital for the next 15 months. Dennis says, “We are eternally indebted to Seattle Children’s and every child who comes behind Isaac.” Doctors from Children’s are there today to support the benefit – Dr. Navin Pinto and Dr. Julie Park.

They’re raising money because, Dennis says, “Only 4% of government funding goes to pediatric cancer research, so we have to do more to increase the odds of success for our kids.”

Two thefts in West Seattle Crime Watch:

WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE VAN STOLEN: Brian‘s sister needs this van to get around; it was taken in Admiral:

Our wheelchair-accessible van was stolen from in front of our house on 9/22 around 5:22 am. We live on SW Stevens in between 46th and 47th. Someone got dropped off by someone else who appears to be driving a pickup truck. They immediately go into the van and drive away. We also noticed afterward that we are missing one of two keys, and we realize this is probably not a coincidence. However, the bottom line is that the van is missing and it’s the only way my sister, who has Cerebral Palsy, can get around. We have no suspects. We can’t imagine knowing anyone that would do this to us. I can’t even imagine a stranger stealing a wheelchair van. It’s just so wrong. It’s a black 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan with a side ramp on the passenger side. The back has a row of seats taken out so you can roll a person in a wheelchair into it and strap the chair down. I can see how it would be tempting for a lot of people to steal as you could use it to haul stuff or even sleep in it. We just want the van back.

The van was last seen heading east on Stevens. Plate number (as shown in the photo) BMA7685. Call 911 if you see it.
