West Seattle, Washington
18 Saturday
Again this year, the St. Nicholas Faire, presented every year by First Lutheran Church of West Seattle, is happening online – Friday (November 25), 6-9 pm. You bid for gift items, the West Seattle Food Bank benefits from proceeds, supporting their work preventing hunger and homelessness! This year’s items include coffee, wine, beer, cookware, gift cards, vacation packages, even Seahawks-themed “ugly sweaters.” All you have to do is register to be ready to get your bids in tomorrow night! You can register and preview the items now – go here.
120 volunteers plus one generous local catering company equals what’s happening at The Hall at Fauntleroy right now – the 24th annual free community Thanksgiving dinner, presented by DSquared Hospitality/Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering.
Of course turkey is at the heart of the menu, but here’s what else:
Donated desserts, too:
(Take-away food is available if you’re not comfortable with the group sit-down setting; last year it was all take-away.) The Hall at Fauntleroy is at 9131 California SW, at the south end of historic Fauntleroy Schoolhouse.
P.S. If you don’t/can’t get there by 3, reminder that the West Seattle Eagles also welcome everyone to their free community dinner, 2-5 pm at 4426 California SW in The Junction!

No need to wait for Small Business Saturday. Every day should be Small Business Day – and some West Seattle indies are getting right out of the holiday gates on Black Friday (or sooner):
That’s the promotional video Thunder Road Guitars (6400 California SW; WSB sponsor) has unleashed for the big sale TRG and co-housed The Bass Shop (also a WSB sponsor) are having – TRG proprietor Frank Gross calls it “Black Friday, Small Business Saturday, Super Sale Sunday weekend!” He’s offering 15% off hundreds of new, used, and vintage guitars, amplifiers, and pedals. You can even shop early on the TRG website – the web sale starts Thanksgiving morning. Shop doors open 10 am Friday.
Three other WSB sponsors are having sales to entice you to shop local:
–Emerald Water Anglers (4502 42nd SW) calls theirs “Fliesgiving” – Friday through Monday, “deals on select rods and reels, and a $25 gift card for every $200 spent.” EWA opens 10 am Friday.
–Mountain to Sound Outfitters (3602 SW Alaska) is celebrating their 13th anniversary through Sunday – 20 percent off skis, boots, and bindings; 15 percent off snowboards, boots, and bindings; 25 percent off accessories. Mountain to Sound opens at 11 am Friday.
–Lauren’s Jewelry (Westwood Village) is having an in-store sale Friday morning, 8 am-noon, “lots of items on sale” plus free gift wrapping,
All through West Seattle’s business districts, you’ll find reasons to shop close at home. Another example: If you’re nostalgic for old-fashioned get-up-early-on-Black-Friday shopping, don’t miss Record Store Day at Easy Street (California/Alaska), which opens at 7 am Friday for that occasion. Throughout the season, we keep a Shopping Spotlight list in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide, so if your business is doing something special, let us know!
Though clouds swept back in this afternoon – including the lenticular cloud over Mount Rainier shown in Greg Snyder‘s photo, above – the National Weather Service says we can expect a sunny Thanksgiving Day. That’s especially good news if you’re going to join in any of the outdoor opportunities for the holiday morning that are featured atop our West Seattle Holiday Guide – and/or for safer traveling if you’re headed out to see family/friends. The rain could be back as soon as Friday.
The holiday is almost here. But not everyone is excited about cooking. If that’s where you fall, here are three things to know, from the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide:

(WSB file photo, The Hall at Fauntleroy Thanksgiving)
#1 – The Hall at Fauntleroy‘s free sit-down community Thanksgiving dinner is back. Noon-3 pm Thursday, all are welcome at The Hall, which is on the south end of historic Fauntleroy Schoolhouse (9131 California SW). This is a two-decade-plus tradition brought to you by DSquared Hospitality, parent company of Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering. They provide the turkey and fixings – with a vegetarian option – and donated desserts (drop one off 9 am-noon on Thanksgiving if you can help with that) wrap up the meal.
#2 – The West Seattle Eagles are also ready to welcome hundreds into their HQ on the north end of The Junction (4426 California SW) – they’ll be serving a free turkey dinner too. Their doors are open that day for any and all community members – all ages, too (their bar will be closed that day).
#3 – If you’d rather dine/drink at a restaurant/bar on the holiday, every year we compile a list of West Seattle establishments that say they’re planning to be open. So far we have 10 on the list – see it here, and check back Thursday, as we’ll likely have some additions. (If you know of someplace that’ll be open, please email westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – thank you!)
Before the cooking and feasting, you have a few ways to get moving on Thursday. The sun is supposed to be back just in time for the outdoor options, too. From the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide:
(West Seattle Runner photo from 2018 Gobble Gobble Group Run)
GOBBLE GOBBLE GROUP RUN: West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) is bringing back its holiday-morning run, 8 am from Alki. If you can, bring a nonperishable-food donation for the West Seattle Food Bank. Meetup location and other details are in our calendar listing.
THANKSGIVING NATURE WALK: West Seattle naturalist Ann is organizing this – meet at 8:45 am at the “Luna Girls on Alki” sculpture north of Salty’s – details in our calendar listing.
THANKSGIVING DONATION CLASS: 9 am Power Flow class at Dragonfly (3270 California SW), benefiting West Seattle Food Bank – info in our calendar listing.
WEST SEATTLE YMCA: If you want to work out at the Y, the Triangle HQ (but not Fauntleroy) will be open 7 am-11 am on Thanksgiving. (3622 SW Snoqualmie; WSB sponsor)
Anything to add to the list? Email us! westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!
Looking to get your Christmas tree semi-early? As noted in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide, today is opening day for Trees by the Sea (2530 Alki SW), which was finishing setup when we stopped by this morning. They’re open noon-7 pm Mondays-Thursdays, 10 am-8 pm Fridays, 8 am-8 pm Saturdays, 8 am-7 pm Sundays. They’re also planning to be open 8 am-noon Thanksgiving Day. West Seattle Nursery and Home Depot have trees already, too, and as listed in our guide, more locations to come!
Just added to the list of giving opportunities in the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide – a food drive starts today at Canna West Culture Shop, with an incentive to give. Here’s the announcement:
Canna West Culture Shop has teamed up with the West Seattle Food Bank (WSFB) to help the hungry this holiday season by initiating a food drive. Starting today visitors to the Culture Shop, located at 5435 California Avenue SW, can drop off non-perishable food items that they want to donate for the holidays. In return for their donations, they will be given a coupon for 20% off of a single item in the Culture Shop.
“Our goal is to donate over 1,000 pounds of food this year,” says Canna West Seattle and Culture Shop owner Maryam Mirnateghi. “The West Seattle Food Bank is such a positive force in our community. Participating in their holiday food drive means a lot to me and my employees.”
According to the WSFB website, over 10,000 people currently live below the federal poverty level in West Seattle, a community where the cost of living is 47% higher than the national average. In the year 2020 alone, the WSFB distributed over 2.57 million pounds of food and spent $338,774 on purchased food, providing services for over 15,000 individuals.
Each week during the food drive, the WSFB will pick up food donations at the Culture Shop and weigh the donation container’s contents. By the end of the food drive on December 31, the team from the Culture Shop and representatives of the WSFB will have an accurate measurement of how many pounds of food were donated during the Culture Shop’s food drive.
“As inflation and food prices have increased, we are seeing a growing need in the community for our services,” says Breanna Bushaw, Development Director at the WSFB. “We really appreciate our amazing West Seattle community and neighbors who help support the food bank.”
The Culture Shop is open daily from 10 am – 6 pm. After-hours food donations can be deposited at Canna West Seattle, located directly across the street. The Culture Shop will accept non-perishable food items that are unopened and in good condition.
During the height of the pandemic, Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s Holiday Gift Fair – centered on fair-trade/ethically-sourced items – moved online. Today it’s back in person, until 1:30 pm at the Walmesley Center (northeast corner of 35th/Myrtle).
This year rather than buying from individual vendors at tables, you can shop around the gym and bring your purchases to a central checkout. That includes OLG students’ bake sale raising money for WestSide Baby – parents are there to assist you.
You can also build your own Advent wreath:
And if you’re there at lunchtime – they’ll be selling food too, including teriyaki bowls.
P.S. See what’s up in the days and weeks ahead – gift fairs and much more – in our WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide (to which we’re adding daily)!
Two weeks from tonight, it’s the biggest night of the holiday season in The Junction, with this year’s Tree Lighting and Night Market now joined by GLOWS. The Junction Association has announced more details, including the schedule for that night (Saturday, December 3) and the street-closure plan:
This year, the event becomes a festival with a stage show, later hours, a beer and mulled-wine garden, and an artistic light display element called G.L.O.W.S. (Glorious Lights of West Seattle).
Alaska Street will be closed from 42nd to 44th. California Ave will be closed from Oregon to Edmunds.
Everyone coming to the festival is encouraged to wear LED lights – anything from a single strand to a full-on costume. A group of roving artists will award prizes to the top individual costume ($250 Junction gift card), pet costume ($100 Junction gift card), and group costume ($500 Junction gift card).
Santa Claus will emcee the stage show, which features School of Rock, Endolyne Choir, Mode Music Studio, Elvis, and holiday surf band Dancer and Prancer after the tree lighting.
The Night Market will feature 24 local artisans selling pottery, jewelry, body care products, wreaths, succulents and other gifts. There will be a few tasty treats mixed in as well. The beer & mulled wine garden – a first at the Junction Holiday event – is presented by Elliott Bay Brewery and Darby Winery.
Schedule for December 3rd Holiday Festival, 4 – 8 pm
4:00: Festival begins. Night Market vendors and Beer & Wine Garden are open.
4:00 – 5:00: Endolyne Choir, Mode Music Studio, and School of Rock perform on stage.
5:00 – 6:00: Elvis performs. G.L.O.W.S. Costume Promenade on streets.
6:00 – 7:00: Costume Contest, Lighting of the Tree, Santa Claus with reading and carols.
7:00 – 8:00: Holiday headliners Dancer and Prancer perform on stage.
Last month we published WSJA’s call for artists to create light costumes for GLOWS; here’s the announcement of who was chosen.
If you just make it to one bazaar this holiday season – consider heading to Arrowhead Gardens in southeast West Seattle (9200 2nd SW) before 3 pm, to browse/shop rooms full of handmade creations, mostly by AG residents, like Dolores (above) and Linda (below).
Linda’s jars contain not only preserves but also sauces/syrups/marinade bases – lemon-rosemary, among others. Also eyecatching as we wandered the vendor tables in the central AG building (on the east side of the complex), these little owls:
Also some wearables like hats and scarves. You can enter AG from Olson or Myers, on the hill over Highway 509.
10:59 AM: Until 1 pm, the West Seattle Food Bank is offering turkeys and boxes of other food to drive-up/ride-up visitors in the north parking lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor). Here’s what’s in the boxes:
If you can’t get to either of today’s turkey giveaways but are at risk of holiday hunger, the WSFB is also distributing turkeys at its HQ (35th/Morgan) noon-7 pm Monday (November 21) and 10 am-2 pm Tuesday and Wednesday (November 22-23).
12:07 PM: Just got a text that they’ll be wrapping up shortly as the 500 turkeys are almost all gone.
For the next few weekends, we are in the heart of holiday bazaar season, with opportunities to buy handmade creations both seasonal and timeless. The first event to open today is at Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (40th/Edmunds).
This one draws crafters from around the region. It’ll be open until 4 pm.
The entrance is off the lot on the south side of the building.
At 39th/Oregon this morning, Eastridge Church volunteers are continuing the church’s longstanding tradition of giving away turkeys and bags of groceries before Thanksgiving. This year, it’s back to walk-up after they switched to drive-up during the height of the pandemic. Bags of food are given along with the turkeys:
Between the church’s two campuses – West Seattle and the Eastside – the church is distributing 1,500 turkeys this year. It continues until noon or while supplies last; we’ll update if we get word they’ve run out.
In our photo above is Jaeley, who’s helping greet people today.

The Delridge Grocery Co-op is now taking orders for this year’s gift basket – a gift idea that’s not only tasty for the recipient, it also does good for the DGC. Here’s the announcement:
The Delridge Grocery Co-op is celebrating small businesses this holiday season with its third annual Holiday Gift Basket, now available for ordering for pickup at the store or delivering to West Seattle addresses. Get early bird pricing through November 25 (Black Friday) — $65 for pickup or delivery!
Focusing on small producers from the Pacific Northwest and around the US, the Holiday Gift Basket is packed with delicious discoveries that are a little bit sweet, a little bit savory, and a little bit fiery.
From the PNW, the basket features one of a variety of hot sauces from Haxan Ferments, preserved lemons from Villa Jerada, a citrus-infused olive oil gift set from Oregon’s Durant Olive Mill, and a tin of Jacobsen Salt Co. flaked salt harvested from Netarts Bay on the Oregon Coast.
The basket also includes a salted caramel chocolate bar from GoodSam, Big Heart rooibos tea sourced directly from a small family farm in South Africa, bourbon barrel-aged maple syrup from Tree Juice, and a unique popcorn-on-the-cob grown from heirloom seeds by Utah’s Petersen Family Farm.
Enjoy special early bird Holiday Gift Basket pricing through Black Friday (November 25) — $65 for pickup or delivery. Order here.
After November 26, the Holiday Gift Basket will be $70 for both pickup and delivery. For convenience, you can choose which weekend to receive your basket (through the weekend of Dec. 16-19). The all-volunteer Delridge Grocery Co-op is open on Fridays from 3–7, Saturdays from 9–3, Sundays from 11–3, and Mondays from 3–7.
Last year’s Holiday Gift Basket sold out, and we were able to add a larger refrigerator to our store. Proceeds from this year’s DGC Holiday Gift Basket will go to help upgrade our equipment and advance our efforts to increase market hours and inventory in 2023.
To help us increase the hours and days we’re open, you can further support the DGC by volunteering for retail shifts, packing our weekly Essentials produce boxes, and driving deliveries on Saturdays. We also need help behind the scenes to coordinate volunteers, research and write grant proposals, and help get the word out via social media. Learn about our volunteer opportunities on our website.
Basket contents:
• Haxan Hot Sauce, Various Flavors (Haxan Ferments, Seattle)
• Preserved Lemons (Villa Jerada, Seattle)
• Citrus Infused Olive Oil Gift Set (Durant Olive Mill, Oregon)
• Flake Salt Tin (Jacobsen Salt Co., Oregon)
• Salted Caramel Chocolate Bar (GoodSam)
• Popcorn on the Cob (Petersen Family Farm)
• Happy Rooibos Tea (Big Heart Tea)

The DGC’s storefront is at 5444 Delridge Way SW – but again, you can order your gift basket(s) online.
One week from tonight, the Argosy Cruises Christmas Ship sets sail for the first time this season, and it’ll be headed directly for West Seattle. If you haven’t seen it before, the Christmas Ship carries carolers (and paying passengers) to stops around the region, making multiple stops most nights for 20-minute performances of holiday songs, including singalong favorites. Everyone’s welcome to watch from shore. Its West Seattle schedule this year is the same as last year – three stops on its first two nights of the season:
Friday, November 25
Choir: The Dickens Carolers
Performance: Don Armeni Boat Ramp @ 5:35 pm
Saturday, November 26
Choir: The Dickens Carolers
Performances:
Salty’s on Alki @ 5:35 pm
Alki Beach Park @ 8:35 pm
Weather permitting, the Alki Beach Park stop will include a bonfire set up by Seattle Parks. You can see this year’s full regional Christmas Ship schedule (November 25-December 23) here.
The Christmas Ship stops are among many events featured in this year’s WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide, and we’re adding more nightly – if you have something to add, send info to westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!
Reminders from the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide: If you need some help with affording Thanksgiving dinner, you have two options in West Seattle this Saturday (November 19) for getting a free turkey and bag/box of groceries:

(WSB file photo)
EASTRIDGE CHURCH, 9 AM-NOON: This year the church at 39th/Oregon is going back to walk-up distribution. Between Eastridge’s West Seattle and Issaquah campuses, they plan to give away 1,500 turkeys and bags of groceries, so they should have enough for all who show up. The line usually forms on 39th.
WEST SEATTLE FOOD BANK @ SSC, 10 AM-1 PM: In the north lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor), the West Seattle Food Bank plans another drive-up/ride-up distribution. They have 500 turkeys and grocery boxes (which include fresh produce) to give out. Approach from the northbound side of 16th.
*Neither of these events requires proof of eligibility – just show up to be served. Also note that there are now three free community Thanksgiving dinners planned in West Seattle on the holiday – see the list in our Holiday Guide.*
If you are able to give during this holiday season, the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide includes a list of donation drives. The newest addition is this year’s drive at Dave Newman State Farm Insurance Agency (longtime WSB sponsor), collecting items to help people stay warm. Here’s the announcement:
The 9th annual winter clothing drive has begun at Dave Newman State Farm Insurance Agency.
In conjunction with the West Seattle Food Bank/West Seattle Clothesline, we are collecting donations of clothes, coats and shoes until January 1st. The Clothesline has told us there is a great need for warm coats. Please drop off your donations at 3435 California Ave SW. The office is open for donations Monday through Friday, 9 am to 5 pm. For undergarments and socks, please donate only new and unopened packages of clothing items.
Pickup may be available for those who have donations but are unable to transport them.
For further information contact the State Farm office at (206) 932-1878.
Thank you, West Seattle, for your generosity and spirit of giving.
One of West Seattle’s official landmarks, the Southwest Seattle Historical Society‘s Log House Museum, celebrated a milestone this week – its 25th anniversary. And that coincides with the launch of potential holiday gift-giving options – here’s the announcement:
For 25 years, the Log House Museum in Alki has operated as an award-winning destination for history, education, and community with the support of our wonderful members, volunteers, and donors.
To celebrate this major milestone and support the ongoing efforts of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, we’ve created a limited-edition, commemorative apparel design that’s now on sale, exclusively online. Shop now for T-shirts, Hoodies, and more, in unisex, women’s, and youth sizes at bonfire.com/store/southwest-seattle-historical-society
These items are only available online and will only be available through the end of 2022!
We’ll be shipping orders in two batches: the first in time for Christmas delivery (order cutoff date Nov 30), and the next batch accepting orders December 1-31 for delivery in early 2023. After that, these items will be gone forever! Don’t miss your chance to be part of this moment in our story, and show your support by wearing it.
You can also easily and securely add a donation with your order, or make a direction donation via our website. All proceeds will benefit the big plans ahead for our programs serving the Duwamish Peninsula and at our beloved Alki home.
Thank you for your continued support of the Log House Museum through our first 25 years and beyond. We wouldn’t be here without you, and we hope to keep serving our West Seattle community for generations to come. Read more about the origins of our historic home, here.
P.S. The Southwest Seattle Historical Society’s annual member meeting happens at the museum (61st/Stevens) at 10 am this Saturday (November 19), featuring a talk by Ken Workman – a descendant of Chief Seattle – “speaking to the truth of being a West Seattleite.” Non-members also welcome, RSVP required.
With Thanksgiving just eight days away, if you want someone else to do all or most of the prep for your holiday dinner, you’re running out of time to get your advance orders in. The WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide has a list of deadlines, starting with tonight for holiday meal kits from Salty’s on Alki, this Saturday afternoon (November 19th) for Dream Dinners-West Seattle, and Sunday (November 20th) for Pecos Pit and PCC-West Seattle. (All four of those businesses are WSB sponsors.) If it’s just not Thanksgiving without a pie, A La Mode Pies in The Junction has a Monday (November 21) deadline. That’s just part of the list in our guide, where all the Thanksgiving-related info is at the top as we start the season. If you have anything to add, westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!
Our newly launched West Seattle Holiday Guide includes a list of holiday-season donation drives. Today we’re showcasing two of them, starting with one that’s about to start:
TREEHOUSE DRIVE AT WEST SEATTLE RUNNER: Starting tomorrow, West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW; WSB sponsor) will be collecting donated gifts for Treehouse, which serves more than 6,000 kids and teens who are in foster care. Requested items include both toys and winter essentials. The full wish list is here. West Seattle Runner is open 10 am-6 pm weekdays, 10 am-5 pm Saturdays, 11 am-4 pm Sundays.
‘CARE PACKAGE’ DRIVE AT WEST SEATTLE HIGH SCHOOL: Again this year, volunteers will assemble “care packages” with hygiene products, food, and clothing to help students get through the inaccessibility to school resources they face during winter break. They’ll be collecting donations at three dropoff events outside the north entrance of WSHS (3000 California SW) – the next three Tuesday afternoons, November 22 and 29 and December 6, 3-5 pm. The full wish list is here.
Got a holiday donation drive or other giving campaign to add to our guide? Email westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!
Every year we put together – and frequently update – a mega-list of local holiday events and info, the WSB West Seattle Holiday Guide. We’ve just published the first 2022 version, featuring everything we’ve received (or found) info about, so far. The Holiday Guide covers pre-Thanksgiving through New Year’s and breaks down the contents into lists including Thanksgiving (starting with holiday-food ordering deadlines), holiday bazaars/sales/business open houses, concerts, other performances, Santa photo ops, Christmas Ship visits, Christmas tree sales, donation drives/fundraisers, holiday decorations, public Hanukkah celebrations, local shopping spotlights, more … We also spotlight practical information as each holiday gets closer – which grocery stores, restaurants, and coffee shops are open, for example.
As more info and announcements arrive, we’ll continue updating the guide. As is the case every year, your help is VERY important – you might see something we haven’t seen/received yet, or you might be planning something for your organization/school/church. Please send info to westseattleblog@gmail.com and we’ll get it listed. We’ll include White Center and South Park events if the info is sent to us, but West Seattle is the focus. We’re here to help make sure you know about all your options all season long! You can find the guide any time at westseattleblog.com/holidayguide, as well as on our menu/navigation bar, whichever device you’re using.
