TRAFFIC ALERT: Westbound Oregon closed west of Fauntleroy for street work

10:50 AM: Thanks for the tip. You can’t head west on Oregon from westbound Fauntleroy right now – a couple blocks of westbound Oregon are closed for road work. Eastbound Oregon is open, though.

11:24 AM: Taking a look from the other direction – the work zone extends to 39th; they’re working on a panel (pavement) at 38th.

1:49 PM: Looking up an entirely unrelated story, we found this comment from about four months ago about a longrunning steel plate there.

Looks like they are finally fixing this spot instead of spot patching.  Most of our Pothole roads need this.

FYI, that comment was from me and I reached out to SDOT about the spot at the time. After a few days, I received a response from SPU:

“…the plate was placed at that location due to voiding caused by a defective private side sewer that serves 3 residences. Technically, it is the responsibility of the 3 property owners to make repairs to their side sewer and restore the street. SPU issued an enforcement notice to the 3 owners to have the side sewer repaired. The enforcement notice ended up getting appealed which has caused some delays, and then the owners reached out to their local Councilmember. Given the extreme cost of making repairs in that location, SDOT and SPU are currently investigating options for what improvement work we can make there to the sewer system etc to lessen the financial burden on the property owners. A decision on what SPU and SDOT is still pending, and the steel plate may be out there for a while yet. We’re also looking at options for just backfilling the voided area and patching the street as an interim measure but even that is complicated
because of the defective pipes under there”.

I like to think my inquiry kick-started what will eventually be a permanent fix, but probably not and we’ll see what the fix is…

I just went by again and the rectangle is asphalt now, no steel plate.

Considering it took barely a day, this must be the interim measure they mentioned, then.

Sorry, comment time is over.
