Also returning this year: The large-scale volunteer-work day all along the Duwamish River and its watershed, to help restore the health of Seattle’s only river. The spring 2022 Duwamish Alive! event is planned for Saturday, April 16th. Even before announcing it to the community at large, some groups have filled up the volunteer openings at various sites, but some openings remain: “Group B” for kayak cleanup (kayaks provided!) and habitat restoration – find the signup info here – and The Heron’s Nest, which is also open to groups and offering children’s activities – email info@duwamishalive.org to sign up for that site.
One SPD report summary of note from the weekend – another case of gunfire blamed on road rage. Police were called to 62nd/Admiral just before 2:30 am Sunday, after a report of gunfire from a vehicle. The victims told officers, the report says, that they “had been involved in a road-rage incident with an older gold Honda sedan.” They said someone in the Honda threw a bottle at their car, and the glass broke their sunroof. (No further details on what if any kind of “road rage” preceded the bottle-throwing.) The report continues, “One of the victims approached the vehicle and a verbal disturbance ensued. A passenger in the Honda subsequently pointed a handgun out the window and fired at least two shots before driving off.” No injuries; police did not find casings in the area. The eight-year-old South Park Bridge is (corrected) owned by King County, which sent an alert about maintenance work planned all day tomorrow; 8 am-4 pm Tuesday (April 5th), the bridge “will intermittently be reduced to one of two lanes in both directions. The lane closures are needed to allow maintenance crews room to clean the drainage systems and expansion joints on the bridge.”
10:33 AM: The week is not off to a good start for Washington State Ferries. The Fauntleroy dock is out of service for repairs. The downtown dock is also down to one slip because a boat from the Bainbridge run made a hard landing, and both the boat – M/V Kaleetan – and dock are being assessed. WSF says Fauntleroy service “will be suspended while maintenance staff assess and repair the issue. The repairs are currently estimated to be completed by mid-afternoon. This means service on the Fauntleroy/Vashon and Fauntleroy/Southworth routes is cancelled until further notice. Service between Southworth and Vashon will continue to run, and the #1 vessel will sail as scheduled, while the #2 vessel will operate unscheduled trips as needed.” We are told at least part of the Fauntleroy problem is related to a worn-out cable. Updates as we get them.
10:44 AM: WSF spokesperson Ian Sterling confirms, “There’s some sort of issue with a cable that is currently being inspected. It’s my understanding the cable is used to help lower and raise the ramp to and from the ferry.”
1:04 PM: WSF says the repairs are complete and the Fauntleroy terminal is back in service with the 1:15 boat to Vashon.

After a third week of reduced restriction, it’s time to again check where key local numbers stand, via the Public Health – Seattle/King County dashboard. Cases are up for a second week, but hospitalizations and deaths continue trending downward:
*51 percent more cases countywide in the past week than the week before
*Currently averaging 281 new daily cases countywide (up from 183 when we checked a week ago)
*23 percent fewer hospitalizations countywide in the past week than the week before
*Currently averaging 3 new hospitalizations daily (down from 4 a week ago)
*38 percent fewer deaths countywide in the past two weeks than the two weeks before (the dashboard doesn’t offer a one-week increment)
*Currently averaging 2 deaths daily (down from 3 a week ago)
For West Seattle, we have two-week comparisons (these are the combined totals from two “health reporting areas,” labeled West Seattle and Delridge):
*157 cases between 3/14 and 3/28, up from 140 between 2/27 and 3/13
*4 hospitalizations between 3/14 and 3/28, up from 3 between 2/27 and 3/13
*No deaths between 3/14 and 3/28, down from 1 between 2/27 and 3/13

If you want to get tested and don’t have a kit at home, public testing sites include the city-supported site at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle, 9 am-5:30 pm Mondays-Saturdays), the Curative kiosk at Don Armeni Boat Ramp (1220 Harbor SW, 7:30 am-3 pm Monday-Friday), and the Curative van at Summit Atlas (35th/Roxbury, 8 am-noon Tuesday-Friday).

When I was out of town, someone tried to break into my house on 35th Ave SW just south of Camp Long. They tried to remove the window frame (odd), and also tried to remove the door frame around my basement door. Neither attempt was successful. My alarm wasn’t triggered because of how they tried to break in. I filed a police report, but wanted to alert everyone in the area to be on the lookout for suspicious activity.

First, I saw this chair fall out of am moving truck around 10 am today on Charlestown near 48th. I moved the chair to the sidewalk afterward. I then found this toolbox a block away on the side of the road. This does contain tools that the owner may wish to see again. If someone can properly describe the contents, I will get it to them.

12:28 PM: Could get windy starting early tomorrow morning, the National Weather Service says, so it has our area under a Wind Advisory alert for 2 am to 8 pm Monday. According to the alert, “Southwest winds 25 to 35 mph with gusts up to 50 mph are expected.” So far the full forecast suggests the strongest gusts are due Monday afternoon.
ADDED EARLY MONDAY: The NWS moved the alert two hours earlier, so it took effect at midnight. If you see or experience weather trouble – power outage, downed tree, etc. – please let us know after you’ve notified authorities – texting 206-293-6302 is always the fastest way to reach us – thank you!
While real trains are still ~10 years away, cardboard light-rail trains are being clutched by kids at the West Seattle Farmers’ Market today, part of the freebies at Sound Transit‘s info table. Both ST and SDOT have tables at the market today, we noticed while walking through, so if you have questions for either transportation agency, this is an opportunity to get answers. ST of course is focused on the 25 days remaining to get your comment in about the West Seattle light rail Draft Environmental Impact Statement, while SDOT is mostly there to talk about commuting alternatives. Both tables are on the east side of the market, closer to the north end than the south end. As always, the market is open until 2 pm.
10:30 AM: An early-morning fire damaged that house in the 9000 block of 17th SW. The initial callout was just after 6 am; firefighters were still on scene a few hours later. They tell us no one was hurt – everyone got OK – but there’s too much damage for them to be able to go back inside. SFD investigators are looking into the cause. SFD is keeping an engine there for a while on “fire watch,” in case of flare-ups.
11:50 AM: As posted in comments, Chris recorded this (update: click here for video) while the fire was burning:
We’re still waiting to hear back from SFD on what investigators found.
1:17 PM: SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley tells WSB that investigators ruled the fire “accidental,” ignited by a candle. Damage is estimated at $230,000. (SFD recently published this advice about candle/incense safety.)

Another chapter in the long history of the development site centered on 3257 Harbor Avenue SW [map] – it’s back on the market, commercial real-estate listings show. We’ve written about it more than a few times over the past 15 years; it was once owned by disgraced developer Michael Mastro. The site subsequently has had multiple development proposals – in 2014, a mixed-use plan with 80+ apartments went into Design Review, and then two years later, that plan was scrapped and a 32-townhouse plan emerged. That plan went all the way through Design Review and land-use permitting but then went idle. Now the site’s on the market, with the plans for those 32 townhouses offered as part of the $5 million listing. A buyer could choose to start something else from scratch, as the townhouse project was approved under 40-foot zoning, and the site now has a 55-foot height limit.
We’re now six weeks away from the return of West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day – first one since 2019! If you’re planning a WSCGSD sale on Saturday, May 14, 2022 – second Saturday in May – registration starts this Monday (April 4th). Everyone who registers gets onto the map that’ll be part of the guide we create in clickable/printable formats, to be published a week in advance of the big day. Today’s the day Deb Schwartzkopf has been working toward for a long time – the grand opening of Rain City Clay in Arbor Heights. As we first reported nine months ago, it’s an expansion for her, joining Rat City Studios in White Center. This is a big space that facilitates not just art but also classes. Lots of work space – here for example are kilns:
Today’s celebration is on until 7 pm – with tours, refreshments, and art to enjoy – you can see how Rain City Clay has been renovating the former Brace Point Pottery:

Two notes in West Seattle Crime Watch today:
ALKI SEARCH: Texters asked about a police search just off the Alki Avenue business district this morning.
Police at the scene told us it was a domestic-violence incident. The victim, they said, was going to be taken to the hospital for evaluation but was not believed to have major injuries. We haven’t been able to find out whether the suspect was found.
PACKAGE THEFT: From Adam:
I had a package stolen from our condo lobby (The Verge – 3213 Harbor Ave. SW) (Friday) afternoon. The package was delivered by the USPS at 2:32, and stolen 15/20 minutes later by what appears to be a delivery driver of some kind.
He was buzzed into the building and was carrying a large black duffel kept flat. He looks at the packages while waiting for the elevator, gets into the elevator when it arrives, then reaches out and picks up my package.
He leaves a few minutes later, with his duffel lighter (notice he is carrying it more upright and its less full than when he arrived), but seemingly still with my package from Revitalash.
The timestamp in the images is off by about 15-20 minutes, so we think this happened between 2:45 and 2:55 pm this afternoon (Friday, April 1st).
The package was addressed to Adam’s wife Jennifer.

Seattle Parks and Recreation has launched a survey to gather community feedback on priorities for the next Park District six-year budget.
The Board of Parks and Recreation Commissioners (BPRC) is charged with holding public meetings and making recommendations to the Superintendent of SPR for each six-year cycle of the Park District.
Starting in late March 2022, the BPRC is launching a public process to consider potential investments for Park District Cycle 2 (2023-2028), both at full board meetings and through more in-depth subcommittee discussions.
In 2014, Seattle voters approved the Seattle Park District providing SPR with funds to increase investment in maintenance, recreation affordability, park development, and supporting community programs.
The first six-year cycle of the Seattle Park District spanned 2015-2020. More information about accomplishments and lessons learned throughout Cycle 1 is available in the Cycle-End Report and associated Appendices.
In 2020, planning for Cycle 2 of the Seattle Park District was delayed twice due to uncertainties associated with the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic and related economic impacts. The City Council acting as the Park District Board passed annual budgets for the Park District in 2021 and 2022.
The survey, which runs through May 12th, asks a few questions about each of three areas on which the budget would focus – you can open each to at least skim over the indexes to see if that’s an area you’re interested in (for example, the first one, “Enhancing Access and Services,” includes off-leash areas among other things). Park District funding comes from property taxes approved by voters in 2014.

ROAD-WORK REMINDERS: SDOT plans to work in multiple locations today:
Updating curb ramps on 45th Ave SW and SW Admiral Way. We may need to shift travel lanes slightly to complete this work, but the street will still be accessible to traffic.
–Making several pavement updates on 16th Ave SW in the Highland Park neighborhood, including such as:
–Installing crosswalks at 16th Ave SW and SW Myrtle St
–Installing pavement markings and crosswalks on 16th Ave SW between Cambridge St and Roxbury St
–Restoring the pavement markings at 16th Ave SW and SW Barton St
–Restoring pavement markings on West Marginal Way between 2nd Ave SW and Highland Park Way. We’ll also be installing reflectors on West Marginal Way to help with visibility on rainy days. This work will take multiple weekends to complete.
–Installing a speed hump and completing remaining construction activities on SW Webster St between 12th Ave SW and 15th Ave SW in Highland Park where we built a natural drainage system earlier this month. Traffic will still be allowed in both directions.
–Replacing overhead signs on West Marginal Way as it approaches the Chelan 5-way intersection and on the Fauntleroy Expressway just before the bridge onramp.

Hannah Roberts and husband Sean used to run the popular Capitol Hill restaurant Honey Hole. Now instead of running a business where the air carries the smell of savory sandwiches, the West Seattle couple is opening one scented with essential oils and fragrances. Moon Room Shop and Wellness opens tomorrow (Saturday, April 2nd) at 5902 California SW; we visited this afternoon for a sneak peek.
The shop inhabits part of a former chiropractic clinic, and Hannah says it’s a space she’s long coveted – “this was my dream building.” Her goal is to provide a memorable “shopping experience,” offering crystals, body oils, face oils, art, jewelry – including her own creations, when you see the Moon Room brand – even T-shirts like this one that celebrates nearby Lincoln Park:
Other unique gift ideas are in view all around the shop. The gift might be for yourself. Some items are miniatures, from tiny fingernail decals to these little cats:
The central themes are wellness and spirituality. Inspired by her food-service background, Hannah has two “gem bars” in the shop where you can buy small colorful stones in bulk.
The decor alone is worth a visit – from a counter decorated with abalone shell fragments gathered by the Northern California tribe to which Hannah belongs, to classic chandeliers.
Moon Room will evolve, she says – “it’s going to be a work in progress” – but this is what they’re starting with, as of 10 am tomorrow. Hours will be 10 am-7 pm Fridays and Saturdays, 10 am-6 pm Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Sundays, closed Mondays and Tuesdays, eventually expanding to 7 days a week.

THE HERON’S NEST: The outdoor-education site near Puget Park plans a Spring Egg Hunt 1-4 pm Sunday, April 10th. Free, all ages, with other activities including art projects and guided bird/nature walks.
DELRIDGE COMMUNITY CENTER: Seattle Parks has just announced a scaled-down list of egg hunts; the only one in West Seattle will be at 10 am Saturday, April 16th, for ages 3-11.
EASTRIDGE CHURCH @ LINCOLN PARK: The annual egg hunt in Lincoln Park’s south meadow, presented by Eastridge Church, is also at 10 am April 16th. 15,000 eggs, Easter Bunny photos, field games, and inflatables are promised; the free event is “designed for families with children through 5th grade.”
OUNCES: A Beer Garden Egg Hunt for kids under 10 is planned at 3 pm April 16th. This too is free.
P.S. West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor)’s popular indoor egg hunt is NOT making a comeback this year, the store has told us.
