SPORTS: West Seattle Little League registration begins

Six days before the start of winter, a hint of spring to follow … it’s the first day of registration for West Seattle Little League. Here’s the announcement we were asked to share with you:

West Seattle Little League will offer Baseball, Softball, and Challenger programs; registration is now open!

West Seattle Little League Spring 2023 registration is now open for all youth ages 4-14.

Each year, we want to make sure all kids have the opportunity to write the next chapter in the Little League story, regardless of their situation. Thanks to the generous support of T-Mobile, financially challenged families in our community can apply for the T-Mobile Little League Call Up Grant, which helps cover registration fees associated with West Seattle Little League for the upcoming season! Little League and T-Mobile share the belief that every kid should have the chance to play ball.

The WSLL baseball and softball spring season will run from March – June and features fun activities like the jamboree, sandlot days, and end-of-the-year picnic. Interested to know more details? Check out westseattlelittleleague.com to find information about boundaries and divisions of play.

We look forward to seeing you on the field!

CONGRATULATIONS! State championship for U11 boys’ soccer team from West Seattle

Meet the newest champs from West Seattle! The report and photo were sent by Scott Rosenstock:

This past Saturday at Starfire in Tukwila, the 2022 South Sound United League (SSUL) Boys U11 team from West Seattle won the State Recreational Cup Championship! They defeated the Chinqually Booters Thunder from Olympia (who happened to be the State Champs last year). A hard-fought battle between both teams in the cold rain ended regulation and overtime with the score 0-0, so they went to penalty kicks to decide the champion. West Seattle came away victorious, outscoring the Thunder 3-1 in penalties.

The team was also the SSUL Boys U11 Regular Season Champions with a record of 8-1-1.

Congratulations to the whole team! Amazing season, amazing coaches, amazing kids!

Two notes about local athletic fields:

NINO CANTU SOUTHWEST ATHLETIC COMPLEX: Nearby resident David tipped us to work under way on the ball fields. Since NCSWAC is a Seattle Public Schools facility, we asked SPS about it. Spokesperson Tim Robinson replied, “Baseball field netting is being installed to prevent foul balls from landing in neighboring yards. The work should be complete by December 23.”

We found this rendering for the project online.

FREE FIELDS: Seattle Parks announced this week that some of its synthetic athletic fields around the city will be open through the end of February for free drop-in play; using them would normally require a paid reservation. Delridge, Hiawatha, and Walt Hundley Playfields in West Seattle are on the list; available hours/days for each field can be seen here.

WORLD CUP: Where to watch Saturday’s early-morning USA-Netherlands match in West Seattle

With the USA team set for a must-win World Cup match against the Netherlands team early Saturday (7 am), we’ve received some questions about who’s opening early for watch parties. So we’re again building a list in the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar. So far we have five establishments on the list – Christo’s on Alki, Prost, The Bridge, The Westy, West Seattle Brewing. Anyplace else? Please let us know so we can add!

CONGRATULATIONS! High Point Hurricanes’ citywide volleyball win

The report and photo were sent by Coach Al:

Congratulations to the High Point “Hurricanes,” who won 1st place in today’s ‘City Wide Volleyball Jamboree’ held at Miller Community Center, making this coach extremely proud!!

After going undefeated during the season (4-0), today they beat Delridge and Loyal Heights community centers, and then again played Delridge in the playoffs, winning the first & third games to bring home the Gold.

Delridge CC took home the Silver, so West Seattle volleyball was well represented!

About the Alki celebration: Samoan sports success

Thanks for the tips and photos! After many texts about a celebratory vehicle parade to Don Armeni (and since headed westbound toward Alki), many displaying the Samoan flag, we went down to find out why. Participants told us it’s about Samoa making it to the Rugby League World Cup final for the first time ever. The match was played earlier today and Australia – which has won the championship 11 out of the past 12 times – beat Samoa 30-10, but Samoans are bursting with pride that their team made it this far.

CONGRATULATIONS! 3 West Seattle boys part of state-champion Seattle Prep cross country team

Three student athletes from West Seattle have a share of a state championship. Thanks to Nate Trius for the report:

(Seattle Prep photo: Middle three are from West Seattle: Miles Trius [994], Jack Henzke [968], Carter Joy [972])

Yesterday in Pasco, Seattle Preparatory School took 1st place in the Washington State XC country meet 3A division . Led by Coach Andrew Walker – former Prep XC runner and Gonzaga runner – who has been cultivating this driven team for the last 4 years. 3 of the 7 runners hail from our own WS community. Carter Joy (senior) and Jack Henzke (junior) attended Holy Rosary, while Miles Trius (senior) attended Our Lady of Guadalupe. All three competed in their earlier years against each other in the CYO athletic programs. When they met again at Seattle Prep, they ran as teammates. Seattle Prep has not brought this 1st-place state win in 22 years. Big day for these boys, their school, and broader Seattle community. This state has some of the top runners in the country and it is an honor to be the winners this year!

Nate included this link to an online video interview with the champs.

SOCCER: Another big playoff win for West Seattle High School girls

WSHS held Garfield scoreless until the Bulldogs’ one and only goal at 60:40. Their next game is at 7 pm Wednesday at and against Bishop Blanchet.

For the first time since 2019, a costumed crowd at Lincoln Park helped West Seattle Cooperative Preschools raise money via its Halloween-season tradition, the West Seattle Monster Dash. Above is our video of hundreds of runners/walkers starting the main “dash”; below, the children who signed up for the Kids’ Dash, split into two age groups:

Of course costume-watching was also part of the fun:

By the time this weekend’s West Seattle Ski Swap opened this morning at the VFW Post 2713 Hall in The Triangle, more than 700 people had consigned 2,500+ items for sale. Many were skis, of course – somebody even brought in brand-new K2s – but, as Riley from Ski Swap-presenting Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor) showed us, some are one of a kind:

(That’s a full-length coat.) Lots of interest, too – big line to get in, in the early going:

Today is the first of two days for the West Seattle Ski Swap, which (aside from the pandemic hiatus) is a decade-plus-old tradition. It’s open at 3601 SW Alaska (right across the street from M2SO’s storefront) until 5 pm today, then again 10 am-4 pm tomorrow (Sunday, October 23).

COUNTDOWN: West Seattle Ski Swap next weekend (not just skis)!

Sooner or later, we’ll see rain (maybe even next Friday). And when we do, the mountains will (likely) get snow. So you might as well be ready for snow-sports season. Next Saturday and Sunday (October 22-23), Mountain to Sound Outfitters (WSB sponsor) will present the event at the West Seattle VFW Hall (3601 SW Alaska, across the street from M2SO). It’s a chance to sell and/or buy gear. If you’re selling, the dropoff hours are 3-7 pm Friday (October 21) – first, register here, For browsing/buying, the Ski Swap hours will be 10 am-5 pm next Saturday and 10 am-4 pm next Sunday. And it’s more than skis – the Ski Swap brings an opportunity to buy/sell snowboards, boots, apparel, and other winter accessories.

West Seattle High School #1, sophomore Airric Lewis, scored the Wildcats’ lone touchdown in tonight’s 42-7 home loss to undefeated Ingraham. The Rams had a better ground game and used it to their advantage to control the clock; their defense gave West Seattle little time with the ball. Some notes from the sidelines, though – this was Breast Cancer Awareness Night, so the cheer squad had some pink gear:

Other pink signs of support included a flamingo in the WSHS student section.

The game’s soundtrack was courtesy of the band (which will lead the costume parade at the West Seattle Junction Harvest Fest in two weeks, October 30):

Next Friday (October 21st), the Wildcats are on the road, playing Nathan Hale, 7 pm at Northeast Athletic Complex.

**IF* the Metro Leage site is to be believed Ing is undefeated.

We talk a lot about sports at Chief Sealth International and West Seattle High Schools, but we seldom hear about sports at the peninsula’s newest high school, Summit Atlas in Arbor Heights (which also serves middle-school grades). Its new athletic director Andres Lara wants to change that, so he’s inviting the community to the Summit Atlas boys’ varsity soccer homecoming game tomorrow (Saturday, October 15). They’re playing Sound Christian Academy at 4 pm at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). It’s a fundraiser for the athletic program, too; entrance fees are $5 adults, $3 youth. The school is a member of the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association but does not currently belong to any of the leagues, playing as an independent school.

SATURDAY UPDATE: Amid the smoky air, the game’s been canceled.
