WEST SEATTLE SUMMER FEST: Student artists invited to be part of the festival

Less than three weeks until the peninsula’s biggest party of the year, West Seattle Summer Fest! This year student artists have a unique chance to be part of it – and just one week left to apply for the opportunity. Here’s the announcement we were asked to share:

Do you have a student who is passionate about art and interested in showcasing their work to the community? We’re excited to invite student artists to participate in the upcoming West Seattle Summer Fest on Saturday, July 12th.

My name is Molly Ryan, and I serve as the Director of the West Seattle Art Walk. One of my primary goals is to foster student engagement in the arts, and I’m thrilled to share that the West Seattle Junction Association is partnering with us to support this initiative.

This year, we’ve received approval to display student artwork along the construction fencing on California Ave SW near SW Oregon St. This unique outdoor gallery will allow student artists to share their creativity with thousands of festival attendees.

We are currently accepting submissions and plan to select 50–70 pieces representing a variety of ages and grade levels. While we wish we could showcase all submissions, please note that not all entries will be selected due to space limitations. We will notify selected participants during the first week of July.

To ensure that artwork is ready to be displayed outdoors, we kindly request photos of the completed pieces with each submission. This helps us confirm that the work is presentation-ready for hanging along the fence.

If you have students who may be interested, please don’t hesitate to reach out with questions or submissions.

Thank you for supporting young artists in our community!

Here’s the link for applications – the deadline is June 30, one week from today.

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Mountain Fest 2025 at Camp Long

(WSB photos unless otherwise credited)

12:48 PM: With the chilly weather, it’s even more of a mountain-ish experience today at Camp Long‘s Mountain Fest! The free festival is on until 5 pm with activities including a lot more than climbing – head to the meadow when you get here and visit the booths to find out what you can try and where (and other activities like a scavenger hunt).

At the naturalists’ tent, Emily and Beth will lead you through the Animal Olympics and talk with you about park wildlife, including a Cooper’s Hawk nest with fledglings nestlings!

The Falconer is here too, in one of the shelters – we caught a demonstration with Mr. Peabody the vulture:

The climbing wall is open too, of course!

The park is at 5200 35th SW.

5:29 PM P.S. If you’re wondering about the fire-gutted lodge, closed now for seven months, it’s still boarded up and fenced off:

Park management says the emphasis right now is on stabilizing the lodge.

CANCELED: Duwamish River Festival, ‘in light of recent events unfolding across the country’

Watching the just-concluded joint meeting of the King County and Seattle City Councils, discussing effects of federal changes, we heard a mention in passing that this year’s Duwamish River Festival has been canceled. The Duwamish River Community Coalition subsequently confirmed it – here’s the explanation they’re circulating:

The festival has been an early-August tradition in South Park for years, featuring numerous community organizations offering information about what’s happening with Seattle’s only river, as well as cultural performances and river tours. (Here’s our coverage of last year’s festival.)

PREVIEW: Camp Long Mountain Fest returns this Saturday!

Despite the devastating lodge fire last November, Seattle Parks is going ahead with one of Camp Long‘s biggest events of the year – Mountain Fest, set for this Saturday! They asked us to share the poster with you:

The daylong festival is meant as a celebration of the park’s famous climbing rock and rope course, among other things. As for the lodge fire, permits for repairs and renovation continue proceeding through the city system..

VIDEO: Morgan Junction Community Festival 2025, as it happened

10:02 AM: The sun is out and the festival is on! Until 2 pm, the Morgan Community Association is presenting the Morgan Junction Community Festival in Morgan Junction Park and behind the Zeeks Pizza/Whisky West building steps away. Here’s the entertainment schedule on the green in the park:

Bubbleman is about to begin. This is all happening on the west side of California SW, north of Fauntleroy Way SW. (If you need parking, it’s free in the O’Neill Plumbing [WSB sponsor] lot on the northeast corner of California/Graham, first-come first-served.) More coverage to come!

10:26 AM: The Bubbleman has drawn an enthusiastic crowd:

“He’s super-funny, mama,” one young fan was heard to exclaim. And as usual, as he runs through his series of custom-rigged bubble generators – including the “Mega-bubble-opolis” – he’s leading the kids through the humble declaration that everything is a “cheap toy.” (His props have included a variety of items from an umbrella to a water bottle to a toilet seat.)

10:55 AM: Don’t just come for the entertainment – check out the community groups! Last night we previewed Schmitz Park Creek Restore‘s plan – they’re (updated) along the street between Beveridge Place and Whisky West:

Behind Zeeks/Whisky West, you’ll find unique independent local businesses including Nepenthe (which is on 35th just north of Roxbury):

In the park, you’ll find the Morgan Junction All-Wheels Association talking about plans for an all-wheels area in the park. On the green, meantime, another family entertainer – Mikey the Rad Scientist, who’s part singalong (with science facts woven in), part comedy – is performing right now.

11:21 AM: Lots of audience participation with Mikey, especially as he invites the little ones to move like the animals he’s singing about, from sharks to snakes. And his music has a message – like the refrain, “We’re living in a garden; may we live carefully.”

12:09 PM: The entertainment slate for the festival expanded to five acts this year, and this one is new, Crush on Her X:

West Seattle’s own The Potholes are up at 12:45 pm.

12:43 PM: Just back from another spin through the lot behind Zeeks/WW. Late addition to the festival vendor lineup – Rhodies FC, West Seattle’s brand-new women’s soccer team, with a few more home games coming up before their first season ends. And if you’re looking to find out about summer camps focused on music and theater, Mode Music and Performing Arts is there:

1:18 PM: Running out of time to get here if you haven’t been already! The Potholes are playing now:

Back in the vendor/community group, the folks with the Seattle Emergency Hubs can tell you all about household and neighborhood preparedness:

And if you stop by the West Seattle Food Bank booth, you can support them – and get a chance at cool local prizes – by buying a ticket in their Summer Raffle:

The festival continues until 2 pm.

1:44 PM: This is running a bit overtime – The Potholes (who you’ll be able to catch at West Seattle Summer Fest in The Junction on Friday, July 11) just wrapped up, and Gary Benson will be starting about 20 minutes later than scheduled.

2:03 PM: Though the musical finale has just begun, vendors are starting to fold up. SFD has just arrived with Engine 32 (above), though, so if you’re in the area, stop by to say hi.

ADDED POST-FESTIVAL: A sample of Gary Benson’s performance:

You can catch him and his mellow acoustic sound on occasion at C & P Coffee (WSB sponsor).

WEEKEND PREVIEW: Learn about Schmitz Park Creek Restore tomorrow at Morgan Junction Community Festival!

We’ve been telling you about the Morgan Junction Community Festival, now just hours away, 10 am-2 pm Saturday, in and around Morgan Junction Park! Among the community groups you’ll find there, along with entertainment and business/vendor booths, is Schmitz Park Creek Restore, which sent this announcement for us to share:

Schmitz Park Restore welcomes friends and fans of Schmitz Park to visit our booth and children’s activity center at the upcoming Morgan Junction Community Festival on Saturday June 14, 2025 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Schmitz Park Restore, a local nonprofit corporation is working to protect, restore and celebrate Schmitz Preserve Park and to “daylight” its eponymous creek all the way to Alki. Our exhibit will begin at the street entrance on California Ave to Beveridge Place. It will offer children, and their parents, the chance to “imagineer” a walk from Schmitz Park’s Ancient Forest all the way down to Alki Beach. Street chalk drawings will show how Schmitz Park’s artesian creek could one day again meet the sea at Alki Beach and Cove. Free street chalk will be available to allow visitors to draw in the fish, birds and other critters and plants that could then make their homes in Schmitz Preserve Park. We will also have booths and tables chockfull of information about the Park and Schmitz Park Restore and its “Ivy League” activities to save West Seattle’s Ancient Forest For further details and information visit www.schmitzparkcreekrestore.org; write to schmitzparkcreekrestore@gmail.com, or phone 206 935 8139.

It’s been more than a year since Schmitz Park Creek Restore debuted their dream (WSB coverage here).

West Seattle Summer Fest – first update on what’s new for 2025!

Just in from the West Seattle Junction Association, some of what you’ll want to know about the year’s biggest party, West Seattle Summer Fest – Friday-Sunday, July 11-13 (following an ever-more-festive Summer Fest Eve on Thursday, July 10). First, this year’s official Summer Fest logo art (yes, T-shirts will be available):

WSJA says this year’s Summer Fest highlights will include:

160+ local vendors and food trucks
A bustling beverage garden
An expanded Kids Zone
Two stages of live music

Main Stage music will be Friday and Saturday as has been the case in recent years, with California SW north of Oregon changing to the Farmers’ Market for Sunday. Headliners will include Reignwolf, Jenn Champion, New Constellations, and THEM! The full music schedule will be out soon, and will also include the Westside Stage – which will host performances all three days – in Junction Plaza Park.

The festival footprint will be the same, but the food court and Kids Zone will change places – the former will be on SW Alaska west of California, the latter will be east of California, with five different inflatables plus activities from West Seattle Arcade, Seattle Reign FC, and Craft Labs Seattle. (Face painters will be on the California raised crosswalks.)

And along with another year of food/beverage vendors serving your purchases in reusable serviceware – making it a truly sustainable festival – this year will see the return of free water-refill stations, so you can bring your own water bottle (or buy one at the festival). Four stations, WSJA tells us.

Also: We’ve been telling you about the fundraiser (still accepting donations!) for seating and shade, and that will be part of the “food court,” described as “an enormous area” of seating/shade behind KeyBank. Plus year-round merchants will have extended sidewalk cafés and in-store promotions..

Festival hours will be 1-8 pm Friday (July 11), 10 am-8 pm Saturday (July 12), 10 am-5 pm Friday (July 13). Music will be on the Main Stage (California north of Oregon) Friday and Saturday until 11 pm, and on the Westside Stage (in the park) Friday and Saturday until 7 PM, Sunday until 4 PM. Find out even more about the festival at westseattlesummerfest.com!

The first day of this year’s Peony Festival at the Seattle Chinese Garden on the north end of the South Seattle College campus drew more visitors than you might expect on a gray, showery day. But this was the day for performances and demonstrations, like grounds manager Julian Leung demonstrating Tai Chi:

Flautist Michael serenaded festivalgoers:

You could make a paper peony, as Rhonda was doing:

Or photograph the festival’s namesake flower:

Enjoy tea:

Or just wander the garden, sightseeing, as we found Joshua, Sarah, and Juniper doing:

The festival continues 11 am-4 pm tomorrow. Admission to the gardens, on the north end of the campus at 6000 16th SW on Puget Ridge, is by donation.

Two notes from the West Seattle Junction Association:

(WSB file photo)

FLOWER BASKET TIME: The famous hanging baskets that adorn The Junction every spring/summer are almost here! WSJA tells WSB that installation is planned for Monday. Once again this year, WSJA – a nonprofit – helped cover the cost of the baskets by offering the opportunity to “adopt” them; look for plaques later this month to show who is sponsoring this year’s baskets. (WSB is participating again this year, this time dedicating our basket to the memory of co-founder Patrick Sand.) The baskets are grown by Van Wingerden Greenhouses in the North Sound, who’ve been tending them since December to get them ready for their debut! (SATURDAY UPDATE: WSJA executive director Chris Mackay just told us the installation date has moved back a week, to May 12.)

SUMMER FEST SHADE AND SEATING: West Seattle’s biggest party is a little more than two months away! West Seattle Summer Fest Eve starts it all off on July 10, and then the festival days are July 11-13. Every year, festivalgoers voice the wish for more seating and shade, so WSJA is crowdfunding to make that possible. Presenting the festival costs a big chunk of change, including permits and security, and it goes up every year, so adding these literally cool new features means this need for donations Go here to get the donation link.

YOU CAN HELP! Early volunteer request for one of West Seattle’s first summer festivals

(WSB photo, June 2024)

Before we get to the heart of festival season in July, an early spot of summer fun arrives thanks to the Morgan Junction Community Festival, presented by the Morgan Community Association. This year, the festival’s on June 14 – still more than three months away, but as this announcement explains, they’re hoping to get volunteers involved now!

Hello everyone in Morgan Junction, and around West Seattle!

The annual Morgan Junction Community Festival is coming up on Saturday, June 14 from 10 am to 2 pm. Event sponsor Morgan Community Association (MoCA) is pleased that the Bubbleman and other fun acts will be returning to Morgan Junction Park along with local vendors and community information booths. We’re hoping that everyone will come out to join us that day.

AND…

We’re hoping some new people will join us to help with planning, preparation and day of event support for this long standing community festival. We need a Vendor lead, a PR lead and a Volunteer lead. Not interested in a lead position? Any help you’d like to offer would be very welcome. The time commitment isn’t huge; one meeting per month and day of event. Please contact us at mocacnc@gmail.com if you are willing and interested.

THANK YOU and see you on June 14 at the Morgan Junction Community Festival!

Haven’t been to the festival before? Here’s our as-it-happened coverage from last year.

VIDEO: West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival 2024

(Live SDOT camera from California/Alaska)

11:01 AM: Until 2 pm, The Junction is a center of Halloween-season happiness, for this year’s Harvest Festival. Here’s the schedule – costume parade from Junction Plaza Park, led by the WSHS Marching Band, starts it all at 11 am; the chili cookoff also starts at 11 at the KeyBank corner until chili runs out; and the Thriller Dancers are due at Walk All Ways at noon. (The Farmers’ Market is in its usual spot, usual time, until 2 pm, plus an extra block of closure on California south of Edmunds.) Updates to come!

11:31 AM: The costume parade has concluded – we’ll have video later:

Update: here’s the video!

(Videos by Edgar Riebe for WSB)

Trick-or-treating is now in full swing.

(This photo and next by Holli Margell)

The weather is dry but brisk – not a good day for oh, say, a beach-party costume.

12:05 PM: If you haven’t tried a flight of chili yet – $15, benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank, and you get to vote – Robbin from WSFB tells us there’s still some:

“Steady crowd,” we’re told.

(We’ll report later who won.)

12:23 PM: Don’t forget the activity booths from local schools and businesses, mostly on California south of Alaska (which also is closed on the blocks bookending Calif):

Trick-or-treating status – we bought candy weeks ago and brought four big Costco bags today – hasn’t all run out yet!

12:34 PM: The Seattle Thrillers put on a show at Walk-All-Ways, as lively – or should we say undead – as ever:

Update: Here’s the video!

Right now the pie-eating contest is happening (as is a rain shower, though costumed attendees are braving it). The festival continues until 2 pm.

12:45 PM: And now a sunbreak!

12:54 PM: Just announced – the chili winner, Easy Street Café! Proprietor Matt Vaughan says he lost by one vote last year so he’s thrilled to take the top spot this time. (Update: A commenter points out Margie’s Café was actually #2 last year. We apparently misheard at a distance.) Coming up in the stage zone, on the east side of Walk All Ways, the Heebie-Jeebies will rock the festival.

1:19 PM: The band says this is their 10th anniversary!

They’re singing what you might call Halloween-forward music, like the ’60s classic “Spooky,” plus selections from their most-recent CD.

1:35 PM: Final half-hour. The band’s still playing, telling spectators “we’ll keep going as long as it’s not raining!”

2:58 PM: The rain did return before the festival ended. We’re adding more photos – thanks to everyone who has shared pics! Another cool performance at the festival – RopeWorks:

SUNDAY NIGHT: In addition to the video we added above, here are two more clips – trick-or-treating …

And Joe Ross, one of the two spotlight musical acts:

Thanks again to Edgar Riebe for the videography!

COUNTDOWN: West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival on Sunday. Here’s who’s competing in the chili cookoff

(WSB file photo)

Time to start previewing Hallo-weekend’s big activities. Biggest of them all – the West Seattle Junction Harvest Festival on Sunday (October 27). It starts off with the costume parade, led by the West Seattle High School Marching Band, and includes trick-or-treating. But for the savory palate, a non-candy treat awaits – the flight of chili that will get you the right to vote in the cookoff benefiting the West Seattle Food Bank. Here’s this year’s lineup, as announced by WSFB:

Get ready to tantalize your taste buds at the West Seattle Food Bank Chili Cookoff during Harvest Fest! This year, eight fantastic West Seattle-area restaurants will compete for the coveted title of Best West Seattle Chili. Here are the contenders:

Easy Street Café
Elliott Bay Brewery
Fire Tacos
Husky Deli
Margie’s Café
at the Center for Active Living
NW TX BBQ
Shadowland
The Westy

We’re excited to welcome a couple of newcomers to the competition this year. Margie’s Café at the Center for Active Living and Fire Tacos, who recently won Best Savory Taste at the Taste of West Seattle with their mouth-watering pork verdé, are joining the fray!

For just $15, you can purchase a flight of 8 chili samples, with all proceeds supporting the West Seattle Food Bank’s vital programs. These include food assistance, help with utilities and rent to prevent homelessness, clothing, bus tickets, and more. Join us at the Key Bank corner during Harvest Fest — the chili cookoff starts at 11am. Don’t miss your chance to vote for your favorite chili and help crown the winner of the Best West Seattle Chili trophy!

The Farmers’ Market will be in its usual spot and time (10 am-2 pm) during the festival (11 am-2 pm) but an extra block of California will be closed for festival activities – between Alaska and Edmunds.

VIDEO: Fauntleroy Fall Festival 2024 (cake winners added)

(WSB photos)

2:28 PM: It’s a blustery autumn day, but the Fauntleroy Fall Festival is on – both sides of the 9100 block of California SW, until 5 pm. See the map, activity list, and schedule here. Lots of indoor and under-a-canopy options – like the bunny petting zoo west of the schoolhouse! Also outside the schoolhouse, you’ll find The Falconer with amazing birds:

Among the other activities already under way: Until 3 pm, the decorated-cake contest is happening in the Fauntleroy Church Fellowship Hall, where you’ll also find the Jump Ensemble. More coverage to come!

2:46 PM: Quite an array of cakes entered. Above, the advanced; below, some of the intermediate:

Voting goes on a little while longer. With live music from the Jump Ensemble!

(Then come back at 4 pm for the “cake trot.”) And outside the church/Y building, build a birdhouse, paint a pumpkin, make a salmon hat … we are off to check on some of that.

3:10 PM: The weather’s actually not too bad – still dry, and not quite so windy in the sheltered area between the church and schoolhouse. Salmon-hat-making is going swimmingly:

And pumpkin painting is as popular as ever:

At the east end of the lot outside the church, the clatter of busy birdhouse-builders:

This is all free, except for the food concessions you’ll find scattered around the grounds.

Coming up at 3:30, a trio of performances – the West Seattle Big Band in the Emerald Room at The Hall at Fauntleroy (south side of the schoolhouse), Dance West Seattle in the Vashon Room at The Hall, School of Rock in the church lot, and the Hilltop Jazz Project by the playground outside the west side of the schoolhouse. The festival’s on until 5 pm.

5:02 PM: Before we left about an hour ago, we recorded a bit of the ever-fabulous West Seattle Big Band, directed by Jim Edwards:

And as we wrap up our coverage (aside from adding the cake-contest results later), we wanted to publicly thank the festival team for the surprise tribute to WSB co-founder Patrick Sand … buttons bearing a photo of him:

Even without him, WSB will keep showing up for what’s happening in West Seattle.

ADDED 11:02 PM: From cake-contest organizer Emer, the winners:

Beginner:
1st – cake #28 Emma
2nd – cake #26 Michael
3rd – cake #44 Iris

Intermediate:

1st – cake #34 Karen

Advanced:
1st – #12 – the unknown winner. Ghost cake with the spider web. (Seen in photo near top of story)
2nd – cake #40 Rachel
3nd – cake #22 Katie

#12 was dropped off without a name – they’d like to get the baker/decorator their prize; email us and we can contact you, or comment below. Emer adds, “I would also like to thank the church youth group for decorating and contributing so many cakes!”
