The flashing beacons at the 63rd/Beach Drive crosswalk are now activated, reports Pooja, who sent the photo. They were installed but not activated last month because of restriping work that still had to be done, SDOT told us at the time. The poles for the lights went up six months ago, but SDOT had to wait months longer for the “equipment and materials.”
A little over three weeks after the Great American Diner and Bar closed at 4752 California SW, the Indian restaurant Taste & Best has opened in its place. They allowed our photographer in for a quick look about an hour ago:
Operations manager Yajas Reddy told us the bar’s not open yet (we had noticed Taste & Best hasn’t appeared on the liquor-license application list yet) but they hope it will be “in about a month.”

Back when we first reported on WestSide Baby‘s 25th-anniversary celebrations last spring, we noted that the nonprofit planned to revive the “Stuff the Bus” diaper-donation drive that used to be a fixture. Last Saturday, WestSide Baby promoted the plan by driving its old-school school bus in the West Seattle Grand Parade, and now the donation dates are set – with these two in West Seattle:

Three things to tell you about West Seattle light rail tonight:
MORE DRILLING: Thanks to Kevin Freitas for the photo of a drill rig on 39th SW between SW Dakota and SW Genesee. Sound Transit spokesperson Amy Enbysk confirms it’s theirs, spending about a week in the area doing soil sampling and installing a groundwate monitor. Here’s the official notice distributed nearby.

BRIDGE BIDDING: Community comments at today’s Sound Transit Board meeting shone light on the fact that Sound Transit has a “request for qualifications”u out right now for potential bidders to build the new light-rail-only bridge across the Duwamish River that the West Seattle Link Extension project requires. The deadline for submissions is next Tuesday, July 28. At least one analysis says the contract could be worth up to $900 million.
NEW SURVEY ABOUT NEIGHBORHOODS: A tip late today pointed out a new West Seattle light-rail-related survey just launched by SDOT and the city Office of Planning and Community Development. This one is about neighborhood planning, somewhat related to light-rail station areas (remember West Seattle now has only two, Delridge and The Junction) but also beyond – see the map above. However, it’s not about what the stations themselves should look like. Find the survey here. It’s open through the end of August. You can also offer opinions and ask questions at the city’s booth at the next two West Seattle Farmers’ Markets (July 26 and August 2).
Reminder that – as previewed here – a video crew working on a web series is scheduled to take over Hamilton Viewpoint Park tomorrow, starting up as early as 6 am and continuing as late as 7 pm. Most of the park will be off-limits to the public – see the map above for specifics of what’s happening in which areas of the park. The crew is working on a web series called “Car Show Rivalry“ and worked with the city Office of Economic Development to get a permit.

6:41 PM: Big sound in a little park – that’s what’s happening now in the second free show in the three-concert Admiral Music in the Parks series. Michael Pearsall is performing tonight – to be joined by friends later in the evening – at California Place Park, the bigger-than-it-looks bus-stop park next to the former Admiral Church at California/Hill.
Grab your chair and come on down – this will continue until about 8 pm, brought to you by the Admiral Neighborhood Association.
There’s bike/stroller parking, a board-game library, knitting circle, and craft activity (making maracas) again this week too -here’s a look!

4:58 PM: Seattle Fire crews are in the 5200 block of SW Canada Drive, just off Beach Drive, for a natural-gas leak. They’ve determined it’s “on the supply side of the line” – which is 1″ wide – and are evacuating some people nearby as a precaution. Avoid that stretch of Beach Drive (see the vicinity map) for a while.

Tomorrow night (Friday, July 24), on the eve of the Seafair Torchlight Parade, the Seattle All-City Marching Band – grand-prize winners at Saturday’s West Seattle Grand Parade – will host Band Jam at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle). Thanks for the tip! West Seattle’s oldest Starbucks location is closing for 10 days starting next Monday. After a texter told us about the impending temporary closure at 4101 SW Admiral Way, we contacted the company for details. Here’s what a spokesperson told us: “The Starbucks Admiral Way coffeehouse will temporarily close from July 27 through August 5 to allow for installation of a grease trap required by the city. This is a planned facilities project.” The Admiral location is one of four remaining standalone Starbucks in West Seattle after the company pulled out of Alki and The Junction in the past two years.

Do you love spending time outdoors? Are you passionate about connecting people with nature? Join Seattle Parks and Recreation as a Seattle Urban Nature Guide (SUN Guide) and help inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.
Seattle Urban Nature Guides lead hands-on environmental education programs for school groups, families, and community members in parks across the city. Along the way, volunteers build valuable skills in public speaking, leadership, environmental education, and group facilitation while becoming part of a welcoming community of volunteers and staff.
As a SUN Guide, you’ll receive FREE training in environmental education techniques and equity-centered teaching practices before leading engaging programs in Seattle’s forests, beaches, playgrounds, and other natural spaces.

Police are questioning a driver suspected in what was described as a series of hit-run crashes in the Alki area leaving other vehicles damaged. Officers were still assessing the damage as well as investigating the suspect for possible DUI. They caught up with him after his Chevrolet Tahoe apparently became immobilized from too much damage, and stopped on Duwamish Head. If you have information for police, or discover more damage, the incident # in this is 26-215311
FIRST REPORT, 11:41 PM WEDNESDAY: Police are at Westwood Village talking with a person who reported their car was stolen in a carjacking just before 11:30 pm. We haven’t heard exactly how it happened, but the car was described over police radio as a black Honda Accord, plate CTU4422, and the carjackers were described as “two Black males in black ski masks and all-black clothing,” last seen heading away from Westwood Village, westbound on SW Trenton. If you have any information, the SPD incident number is 26-215265.
UPDATE, 10:35 AM THURSDAY: We requested and obtained the report narrative from SPD. The only descriptive details are what we mentioned above, with the added detail, “one black pistol each.” From the document (with SPD’s redactions):
… XXXX was on the phone with his mother who lives in India and was standing outside of his vehicle in the parking lot. XXXX was also eating Popeye’s on the trunk of his vehicle when he observed a silver or dark colored sedan driven up to him. That is when two black males in all dark clothing and face masked get out of the vehicle and each one-pointed what XXXX believe to be a black or silver firearm.
They immediately told XXXX to put his hands in the air and to throw his car key to them. XXXX complied and threw his keys, and they then told him to run away, to which he did. XXXX stated that as he was running away, they began to laugh at him and XXXX XXXX car. The subjects then drove away going northbound in the parking lot and XXXX went to nearby
vehicles that called 911. XXXX stated XXXX. Additionally, noting that his car was empty and only had approximately 36 miles left. …
As explained in radio communication at the time, that was ~36 miles of fuel. Police gave the victim a ride home.
You’ve probably seen weather time-lapses. But probably not like the kind Upper Fauntleroy resident Robert Kosara has set up for a new website he’s updating nightly – here’s how he describes it:
Relive yesterday’s weather (and see how much sunshine we got)! I’m recording the sky with a pair of cameras overlooking Endolyne/Fauntleroy, to show the sun’s path across it every day from summer to winter solstice.
The actual project is for creating digital solargraphs. A solargraph records the path of the sun across the sky, usually over the course of several weeks or months, on photographic paper. I’ve built a digital version of this, which gives me a few more options for creating things like this website that shows the solargraph for every day.
You can browse the different days and scrub through each day’s data. The page is updated around 9:30pm every day with that day’s images.

It was still in the mid-80s when we headed down to Emma Schmitz Memorial Overlook to see the sunset tonight. On a float offshore, a seal was out for sunset watch too. Also this evening, Tom Trulin sent this photo of a Great Blue Heron flyby at Lincoln Park:
Just after sunset, intermittent light rain began to fall; the National Weather Service says thunderstorms are a possibility in the early am (we saw a flash over the Cascades while subsequently driving along the northeast West Seattle waterfront). But the weather should settle down by tomorrow pm, meaning a good evening for the second Admiral Music in the Parks concert!

Two vehicle break-ins reported this afternoon, one involving a U.S. Postal Service vehicle:
USPS VEHICLE BROKEN INTO: David G reported seeing this in Gatewood, on 37th north of Thistle:
Was on my way to pick up some lunch and I noticed a USPS jeep (I think it was a jeep) that appeared to have been broken into. When I drove by there was just the mail carrier on his phone next to the broken driver’s side* window. I tried to grab a pic on the way back but the vehicle was gone, just the shattered glass remained.
Seems pretty brazen… as the mail carrier was probably somewhere within the block delivering mail.
According to the police-radio archive, this was dispatched around 1:30 pm as someone breaking into the vehicle, and taking “a backpack.” We don’t have report narrative yet but if you have any information, the incident # is 26-214658.
10:45 PM UPDATE: Police have since provided the requested narrative. It says the carrier saw the break-in as he was returning to his vehicle after an estimated 10 minutes away; the thief pulled up in a “gray sedan,” broke the window, grabbed the backpack, and drove away southbound on 37th. The backpack, according to the report, contained personal items – the carrier’s wallet, keys, jacket, and “miscellaneous.”
CAR BREAK-IN: We also received a texted report of a car break-in in Morgan Junction around 1:10 pm. The texter said their vehicle was “rifled through … in the back alley off Mills Street between Mills and Willow.”
