Celebration of Life planned Sunday for Clive McCoy, 61

Family and friends will gather Sunday (August 10) to celebrate the life of Clive McCoy, and are sharing this remembrance with his community:

Clive McCoy passed away July 16, 2025. He was 61 years old. Clive lived a full life and was a gift to all who met him. Clive had Down Syndrome. He started school at age 3 at the Northwest Center. He attended Grandview School and graduated from Tyee High School in 1984.

Clive then went to work at the Seattle Bagel Bakery for many years in the kitchen. He took his job responsibilities seriously and was proud of the work he did. When Clive was no longer able to work, he participated in local day programs. Clive lived with two roommates and care givers helping with activities of daily living. It was a model for semi-independent living.

Clive will be missed. He was our little brother, an integral member of our family. Clive loved his family and his church. A Celebration of Life will be held at Tibbetts United Methodist Church, 3940 41st Ave SW, on Sunday, August 10 at 2 pm. Memorials can be made in memory of Clive to Tibbetts United Methodist Church.

The Easy Street Wreckers won the ISL Softball Co-Ed City Championship . This marks the 4th time in 6 years! They are also celebrating 20 years as a team! Trailing by 5 going into the last inning, Easy Street rattled off 12 unanswered runs to take the trophy. The ASA Industrial Softball League includes 16 small businesses throughout Seattle. Big props to The Lariat, great bar/ lounge in White Center. Seattle’s first and only pro-wrestling-themed bar! Congrats to Georgetown’s 9 LB Hammer – they won the 2nd Division trophy.

MVP went to South Seattle College Political Science Professor and avid record collector, Larry Cushnie.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: Luring attempt; bicycle theft; hit-run mystery

Three incidents in this Crime Watch roundup – ne from the police files, two from reader reports:

LURING ATTEMPT: This was called in to 911 just before midnight last Friday night; after seeing a short summary, we requested the narrative (note that RP stands for “reporting party,” who in this case was a juvenile):

Officers responded to 4001 California AV SW (76 service station) in reference to a suspicious subject complaint.

Upon arrival, officers contacted the RP, who was hiding in a nearby alley behind the service station. According to the RP, she was waiting at the bus stop, which was located in front of the store on California AV SW, when a red in color cargo van drove up and the driver of the van reportedly asked the RP if she wanted a ride home.

When the RP declined, the van left the scene but returned a short time later. The RP advised that the driver approached her again and then demanded that the RP get inside of the vehicle.

The RP stated that she became afraid and ran behind the store and down the alley where officers located her hiding behind several garbage cans in the area. The suspect had left the area in an unknown direction before officers arrived on scene.

The narrative provided to us included no description of the person in the van, nor any further details about the van, though the original summary said it was a “minivan” with a “sliding door.” If you have any info, contact police and refer to incident # 25-219081.

BICYCLE THIEF: Joni is looking for her stolen bicycle, taken on Genesee Hill, and sent these two images – one of the thief:

And this one of her bicycle:

This happened at 3:42 am on July 28th. We’ll add the police report # when we get it.

HIT-RUN: A reader who wishes to be anonymous is asking for help with this:

A West Seattle Sunday Funday unfortunately took a turn when two friends I’d been with were sideswiped while parked on southbound Harbor Ave SW — right in front of Verge Condominiums — between 3:30 and 5:30 PM on Sunday, August 3rd.

We’re hoping someone in the community might’ve seen something. Our assumption (based on some left-behind car parts) is that the vehicle may have been a white Honda Civic or Accord, but we’re open to any leads or eyewitness accounts.

The report number is M4800628.

ELECTION 2025: Less than 24 hours left to vote for city and county top jobs, money measures, more…

(WSB photo: One of West Seattle’s four ballot dropboxes, at South Seattle College)

One more reminder before Election Day arrives – you now have less than 24 hours to vote! King County Elections dropboxes close at exactly 8 pm tomorrow (Tuesday, August 5), and if you’re going to chance that USPS will postmark your not-yet-sent ballot in time, the sooner you get it to a Post Office, the better! (Forgive us for not having at least a mayoral-candidates forum this primary season … it’s still a bit of a transition time for us, but we plan to beef it up for the general election.) You have to decide now, though, who you want to see on the ballot for that election – and you have to settle the fate of two levy measures. Here one more time is what voters in our area are considering:

nCANDIDATES (all are listed/infolinked here)
Seattle Mayor (8 candidates)
Seattle citywide Council Position 8 (5 candidates)
Seattle citywide Council Position 9 (4 candidates)
Seattle City Attorney (4 candidates)
King County Executive (7 candidates, no incumbent)

Top two candidates in those races will face off in the November general election. Meantime, the two below, as is always the case with ballot measures, will be final decisions:

BALLOT MEASURES
King County Proposition 1 (6-year County Parks Levy renewal)
Seattle Proposition 1 (City Democracy Voucher 10-year levy renewal)

Still only 18 percent of ballots have been received so far. … Tomorrow night’s first and only round of results should be released around 8:15 pm, and as usual, we’ll have the highlights.

CRIME WATCH FOLLOWUP: Charges filed against two murder suspects arrested in West Seattle

Last week, we reported on two people arrested in West Seattle who were suspects in unrelated murders outside West Seattle. Both are now charged. Here are the updates:

WEST SEATTLE RESIDENT CHARGED IN NORTHGATE MURDER: The King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office has charged Edward G. Kimani with first-degree murder in the deadly shooting at the Northgate Transit Station one week ago today. He’s the 26-year-old man arrested at his residence on 28th SW in Sunrise Heights last Wednesday night in a warrant-service operation that caught the attention of thousands because the Guardian One helicopter circled overhead until Kimani was in custody. While investigators say Kimani and 48-year-old victim Juwan Williams were schoolmates at Pima Medical Institute in Northgate, they still say they don’t know the motive. But they allege it was premeditated, that Kimani knew when Williams would be at the transit station and waited for him. The charging documents also say that Kimani had no criminal history, and that investigators haven’t found the gun used in the murder, but after the warrant was served that night, “Also in that bedroom was a receipt for a Glock 42 380 ACP – the same caliber as that recovered from the scene, along with a box of .380 ammunition. Investigators compared the brand of those bullets to that of the fired shell casing recovered at the scene and both were Ammo Inc .380 Auto bullets.” They also say Kimani had at least two other guns: “Records also showed Kimani had a Taurus .40 handgun registered to him in September of 2024 and a Glock 9mm handgun registered to him in April of 2024.” Kimani remains in jail in lieu of $5 million bail.]

WEST SEATTLE VISITOR CHARGED IN SODO MURDER: Last week we also reported on the arrest of 35-year-old Jordyn B. Weichert, sought in connection with a deadly stabbing in SODO. She is now charged with second-degree murder in the July 14 killing of 55-year-old Ramon Aragon-Garcia in his van. Prosecutors say the two apparently knew each other and were “friendly” before the murder, though there is no information on a motive here either; Aragon-Garcia died of multiple stab wounds all over his body, beneath which the murder weapon was found; there is no information on the documents about who it belonged to. Weichert was arrested in the Luna Park area last Tuesday; she had stayed the previous night with a friend/acquaintance there. Her permanent address is listed as Whidbey Island, where she was convicted of three counts of vehicular homicide in a 2010 crash in which her vehicle went out of control after she asked a passenger to hold the steering wheel while she changed clothes. Whidbey news coverage reports she was sentenced to only eight years. Weichert remains jailed in lieu of $5 million bail, awaiting arraignment on August 14.

UPDATE: Fire at Camp Second Chance, West Seattle’s only tiny-home village

5:57 PM: SFD has a ‘fire in building” response headed to 9701 Myers Way South [map] on the southeast edge of West Seattle, site of Camp Second Chance. One of the tiny homes there is reported to be on fire, with one person reported injured. As of last week, 85 people were reported to be living in the tiny homes at CSC, which is West Seattle’s only city-authorized tiny-home village.

6:01 PM: Firefighters just told dispatch that the fire is mostly out thanks to other residents using fire extinguishers (which each unit is required to have). The injured person is reported to be out of the burned tiny home. … The incident commander is already dismissing a few of the responding units.

6:04 PM: Firefighters report that the fire was only a “contents” fire and did not burn the actual 12’x8′ structure. The injured person, meantime, is described as a man about 40 years old.

Here’s why Fairmount Playground’s south play structure is fenced off

A commenter wondered about that fence blocking access to the south play structure – which is only three years old – at Fairmount Playground. We went over for a look today and noted that not only is the play structure fenced off, so is the entire south-side pathway leading to it from Fauntleroy Way SW. At the street end, notices say it’s a “tree protection” zone, and allude to construction, but no further details, and as the commenter noted, the project to install turf on the nearby ballfield is nowhere near construction-ready. So we inquired with Seattle Parks. Spokesperson Karen O’Connor says it’s for a pathway-paving project that “came up quickly” and was announced along with two non-WS projects for which a contract was awarded to Sunset Grill Construction. Here’s the info about this one:

Fairmount Park in West Seattle: Schedule and Closure: July 31 – September 1

Scope: Installation of new ADA-compliant sidewalks around the playground at Fairmount Park. This includes demolition of existing pathways and construction of new concrete and asphalt pavement in compliance with ADA standards. The contractor will need to close the play area to complete this work and will work to minimize impacts to the remainder of the park.

O’Connor says they’ll get explanatory signage so no one else is left to wonder why.

BIZNOTE: Indofusion’s two-phase opening in West Seattle Junction

If you’ve passed by Indofusion (4719 California SW) in The Junction and noticed the doors appear open … the restaurant is partly open now, full opening planned later this week. We last checked in on the new restaurant/bar in April (it’s owned by the Virk family, which also operates Maharaja Cuisine of India a bit further north). The kitchen is operating right now and serving food for takeout (Toast) and delivery (Uber Eats now, GrubHub and DoorDash “soon”). But you can’t dine in, yet. They’ll open the doors so “folks can come in, look around, and check out the place” starting around 2 pm Wednesday (August 6). Then they’ll fully open starting at 10:30 am Friday (August 8). Hours for starters, as of Friday, will begin at 10:30 am seven days a week, closing at 2 am on Fridays and Saturdays, midnight Sundays through Thursdays. Dine-in (or drink=in) is 21+ only. You can check out the menu online through the aforementioned services; we also took photos of the paper menu currently posted out front – see them here and here.

UPDATE: I-5 ramp to West Seattle Bridge reopened

1:40 PM: This has been going on a while but just hit our radar with a WSP tweet that the northbound I-5 ramp to the westbound West Seattle Bridge is still blocked and will be for a while because of that sideways truck. If you are south of here and have to head north, you’ll need to find an alternative.

2:22 PM: Thanks to John, who just sent that view of the attempt to right the sideways truck/trailer. WSDOT says it’s upright now but still needs to be towed.

3:05 PM UPDATE: Open again.

BIZNOTE FOLLOWUP: Transition time for first West Seattle drugstore to convert to CVS

Crews are changing the signage on the facade of the 5217 California SW Rite Aid, first of three West Seattle drugstores set to be taken over by CVS over the next several weeks. What was a “CVS Pharmacy coming soon” banner on the left side now says “open during remodel,” and CVS-branded signs are on the posts in the parking lot too. The other two local stores that will convert to CVS are the Admiral and Jefferson Square Bartell Drugs; the Rite Aid in Westwood Village is currently scheduled to simply close. Meantime, as we reported over the weekend, same industry though different company – Walgreens has announced it’s shutting down the store at 9456 16th SW on September (corrected) 10.

WHALES: Humpbacks off West Seattle

Two humpback whales are in view northbound off Constellation Park, Kersti Muul tells us, “possibly headed for downtown” (into Elliott Bay). Let us know if you see them!

Camp Long is open! Starting tomorrow, weekly free drop-in rock climbing

That’s a photo of Camp Long‘s famous Schurman Rock, where you are invited to climb for free on Tuesday nights all this month! Camp Long’s Matt Kostle explains:

We will have staff and volunteers from the Camp Long Climbing Corps out to help participants get geared up and climb on the historic Schurman Rock! We will open sessions from 5 pm to 6 pm and 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm. You can come up to a half an hour early and it will be first come, first served. We will have to manage the number of people climbing and therefore will only have so many slots available at a given moment but will try to get as many people out climbing as possible! All gear will be provided (and you must use our harnesses and helmets as we inspect them periodically for safety and know their conditions). Open to all ages including quite little ones – as we say around here, if you are old enough to walk, you can rock!

Matt also wants you to know that the aftermath of last week’s brush fire on the eastern slope of the park has not affected park operations; “At this time, unknown cause, and thanks to the efforts of staff on site and the Fire Department, there was minimal damage to the forest.” (We’re working on a separate update about the lodge’s status.)

GOT FUTURE FRUIT? Here’s how to be sure it doesn’t go to waste

You have the fruit tree(s), they have the volunteers ready to harvest. The Rotary Club of West Seattle (WSB sponsor) is working with partners on plans for a Community Fruit Gleaning Day – just under six weeks away, but you’re urged to register your fruit tree(s) right now! Here’s the announcement we were asked to share:

Volunteer your fruit tree now for Community Fruit Gleaning Day in September

Gleaning? What’s that?! Historically, “to glean” was to gather crops left over after a general harvest. Today, the term describes the process of harvesting fruit that might otherwise go to waste and getting it into the hands of people who need it via local food banks.

Rotary Club of West Seattle is partnering with City Fruit, a nonprofit organization that harvests and stewards urban fruit trees to support sustainable and equitable access to fruit, as well as Scouting America Chief Seattle Council. Together, they will glean fruit that can be distributed to neighbors in need through the West Seattle Food Bank and White Center Food Bank.

How can you help? Register your apple, pear, plum, or other fruit-bearing tree if you’re likely to have ripe fruit in early September. Complete the Gleaning Interest Form (forms.gle/Mbp8r5v6kveJtFaX7) as soon as possible (deadline August 23). Rotarians and Scouts will harvest the fruit on Saturday, September 13.

“It’s a pretty sweet deal,” said Mike Price, the Rotarian leading the West Seattle project. “You volunteer your tree but don’t have to do any heavy work. Let Rotary and Scouts do the picking and hauling. The food banks and their clients really welcome the fruit.”

“Our partners, City Fruit, harvest 30,000–45,000 pounds of fruit from trees on residential properties and in orchards across Seattle every year, which they share with food banks and local meal programs,” Price continued. “We know of trees left unharvested, where the fruit spoils. It’s a shame to lose that nutritional value.”

If you have fruit that ripens at a different time of year, consider sharing it via City Fruit. For more information, visit cityfruit.org/share-your-fruit/.

Questions about Community Gleaning Day? E-mail the Rotary Club of West Seattle at ws_rotary@yahoo.com.

UPDATE: Southbound Highway 509 crash following West Seattle gunfire incident (updated Monday)

9:58 PM: If you have to head south any time soon, you’ll want to avoid southbound Highway 509. It’s blocked a mile or so south of Cloverdale because of a crash involving drivers described as a suspect and victim in a West Seattle incident – the victim was said to be following the suspect after some kind of incident, possibly involving a gun, which officers say may have been thrown out of a car window on the West Seattle Bridge. Lots to sort out but in the meantime, southbound 509 is said to be fully blocked.

10:34 PM: Listening back to archived emergency-radio exchanges, this began with the victim alleging the suspect had shot at him “in a parking lot on Harbor Avenue.” Police are reported to have taken the suspect into custody at the crash scene.

10:59 PM: Police have told dispatch they’re reopening part of the freeway.

ADDED 11:11 AM MONDAY: Here’s the initial SPD summary, which says the first word of this came in a 911 call at 9:30 pm:

… a man called police after having exited his parking garage in the 3400 block of Harbor Av Sw, and gotten involved in a road rage incident. According to the victim, he may have mistakenly cut off two occupants of a black BMW, who exited their vehicle, with the passenger punching him in the face multiple times, and the driver brandishing a handgun. The victim said that before he could put his vehicle in drive, he heard his vehicle being struck by gunfire. While on the phone with 911, who told him multiple times to pull over, the victim said he was following the suspect vehicle across the West Seattle bridge in an attempt to get the suspect vehicle license plate. However, minutes later while traveling sbound on SR-509, both vehicles were involved in a collision. Only the driver was seen exiting the suspect vehicle, where he was positively identified at the scene by the victim and taken in to custody. A brief while later, the passenger returned to the scene on foot with his mother, where he was also positively identified and placed under arrest. There were no injuries. Both suspects were arrested for Investigation of Assault. As bullet holes were found in the victim vehicle, it was impounded with an investigative hold alongside the suspect vehicle. SFD, State Patrol, Tukwila and Renton Police assisted in this incident. GVRU, Homicide, TCIS, and even Harbor were contacted about this matter, as the suspect with the firearm claimed he tossed it over the West Seattle bridge. Spent shell casings were recovered at the original scene and placed into evidence.

In case you’re wondering, Tukwila and Renton were contacted because SPD was trying to find a K-9 team to help them look for the gun; they eventually got a response from Tukwila.

Winging it in West Seattle: Readers’ bird photos

The human-made flying machines of Seafair‘s airshow are done for another year … tonight we’re launching one of our occasional galleries of natural-born flyers, thanks to readers’ contributions:

No birds visible but Stan Gelles tells us that’s a Bushtit nest – for the tiny birds that flock together, chirping, from tree to tree, shrub to shrub. Bigger birds from here – like the snacking Belted Kingfisher photographed by Stewart L.:

Stewart also photographed what might be the most photogenic bird on West Seattle shores, a Great Blue Heron:

A snacking heron captured the attention of Erin Jackson:

Erin also spotted a Glaucous-winged Gull in the process of dining:

That’s also what this Osprey photographed by Gary Jones was up to:

And Jerry Simmons saw this Bald Eagle getting ready for liftoff from an offshore raft:

Jerry also found a Barred Owl clearly trying to ask, “whoooo are YOU looking at?”

Thanks to everyone who sends bird photos, wildlife photos, sunset photos, breaking news photos … email is optimal, westseattleblog@gmail.com – but text also works if time is of the essence, 206-293-6302.

WEEK AHEAD: Having a block/building party on Night Out this Tuesday?

That photo from Southwest Precinct crime-prevention coordinator Jennifer Satterwhite shows ~800 swag bags for registered Night Out block/building party hosts to pick up tomorrow (if your party is registered, you should have received instructions for pickup). Hundreds of parties are planned around West Seattle for this national celebration of community solidarity and resilience, Tuesday night, August 5. If you’re not hosting or participating in a Night Out party, remember that streets will be closed for block parties, so getting around that night may mean some detouring. We’ll be out covering parties as always so if you’re having one and we’d be welcome to stop by for a photo, let us know – westseattleblog@gmail.com or text 206-293-6302 – or, on Tuesday night, take a pic and send it while you’re partying!

COUNTDOWN: Two weeks until Back-to-School Swap Shop in West Seattle

Sorry to interrupt summer with this reminder, but the start of school for Seattle Public Schools (among other local schools) is now one month away (and some start even sooner). Here’s one way to get ready – plan to participate in a “swap shop” that’s planned for two weeks from today. Lindsay Pearsall sent the invitation for the August 17th event at Fauntleroy Schoolhouse (9131 California SW)

This summer, we’re doing a Back-to-School Swap Shop— where people can bring gently used items and take home anything they find useful. Whether it’s outgrown clothes, unused school supplies, books, toys, or backpacks—if it’s in good condition, bring it to share!

No money needed. No expectations. Just a fun and thoughtful way to support each other, reduce waste, and give new life to things your family no longer needs. It’s totally free and open to everyone in the community.

We hosted a similar Swap Shop event right before the holidays last year and had a great turnout. It was such a positive and practical way for neighbors to connect and support each other.

RSVP via this Eventbrite link!

The swapping/shopping will be 10 am-noon, but you’re invited to come at 9 am to drop off and set up your “swap” items, and to stay after noon to help clean up if you can; at 1 pm, unclaimed leftovers get donated via the Big Blue Truck.

VIDEO: Danny Vernon’s tribute to The King at The Mount’s concert-series kickoff

(WSB photo/video)

From “Rock-A-Hula” to “Viva Las Vegas,” Elvis Presley tribute performer Danny Vernon led the audience on a geographic as well as discographic tour of The King‘s music at The Mount (WSB sponsor) on Friday night. We recorded several of the songs – here’s the classic “I Can’t Help Falling in Love With You“:

That’s Danny’s wife Marcia, nicknamed “Ann-Margret” after Elvis’s similarly red-haired sometime co-star, dancing and singing with her husband. They also did the “Bossa Nova”:

This one kept the tempo up:

And this song was a tribute to Elvis, “The King Is Gone“:

After a break – during which Marcia sang solo – Vernon returned in jumpsuit and shades inspired by later-stage Elvis:

August 16 will be the 48th anniversary of Elvis’s death at age 42. … This was the first of four consecutive Friday night concerts at The Mount planned for this year; next Friday (August 8) brings another tribute show, Joey Jewell paying homage to Frank Sinatra “and friends,” 6 pm, free, with barbecue dinner available for purchase starting at 5:30 pm.

For those wondering about the five-car SPD response on the north side of Morgan Junction Park at noontime, it was dispatched as a fight involving two men and one woman, with one person reported to be holding a knife. The presence of a weapon is what resulted in the large response. One person was reported injured – not described as knife wounds – and at least one person was taken into custody.

UPDATE: West Seattle Junction power outage that affected some businesses as well as residents

11:21 AM: Seattle City Light is on the scene of a power outage affecting nearly 400 customers in The Junction – thanks to the reader who sent that photo along with one of several tips we just received about the outage.

According to the SCL map, this started a few hours ago. It’s affecting some businesses as well as residents; we just heard from Paper Boat Booksellers (4522 California SW), which says they’re out of power. We’re heading to The Junction to see who else is out.

11:39 AM: Before we even could get there, the power returned, reports Sharonn, who saw it happen while on the phone with us providing an update on who was affected.

11:49 AM: The SCL map hasn’t updated yet, so we’re not sure if that was a full or partial restoration.

12:10 PM: Map shows everyone’s back on.
