PHOTOS, VIDEO: The Highsteppers’ soulful show @ Hiawatha, with guest appearance by The West Seattle Turkey

6:52 PM: “We’ve got some great dancing going on up here!” enthused one of The Highsteppers‘ singers between songs, referring to the youngest audience members:

Most of what they have performed so far is from those kids’ grandparents’ day – classic R&B, Motown, soul hits – but great music cuts across generations, and that’s what they’re doing tonight in the second-to-last Summer Concerts at Hiawatha show:

This is on at the east lawn of Hiawatha Community Center until 8, presented by the Admiral Neighborhood Association, with community co-sponsors including WSB. Free. More later!

10:12 PM: Special guest audience member – The West Seattle Turkey!

Well … it was nearby. Thanks to everybody who texted and rushed over to the sponsor zone on the east edge of the lawn to tell us in person about the sighting. The Turkey wisely moved on before attracting too much of a crowd. And thanks to the driver who stopped as it, yes, high-stepped across the street.

Back to the concert. Vocalists Samantha Willis and Stacey Meyer shone on a range of songs from “Rescue Me” to “Straight Up,” and the rest of the band rocked too. Here’s part of “Proud Mary”:

Another good crowd, all ages, many with picnic dinners:

The theme is Hawaiian, but you don’t need an aloha shirt – although The Kenney’s executive director John Cruz is sporting one:

The barbecue’s on until 7.

City crew clears former campsite at Rotary Viewpoint Park

A texter noticed city crews working today in an area of Rotary Viewpoint Park (35th SW east of SW Alaska) where there’s been camping for some weeks. We went there and found a Seattle Parks crew cleaning up what they confirmed were the remnants of a campsite. We then asked Will Lemke, spokesperson for the city’s Homelessness Response, about it. His reply:

The Navigation Team did remove an encampment in the area you referenced. There was a woman living unsheltered there and the team has been engaging her for over a month to try and connect her to shelter and/or services. Parks crews were there to restore the site and work on the tree that was damaged. The team’s outreach workers, System Navigators, are following up to see what can be done to connect her to shelter now that she has moved elsewhere.

According to a recent city report, 135 “unmanaged campsites” were cleared around the city in the second quarter of this year.

 |   Port of Seattle | West Seattle news

(From project fact sheet)

After a reader messaged us to say that “crazy vibrations have been rumbling our windows and house on the east side of Hiawatha,” we just verified with the Port of Seattle/Northwest Seaport Alliance that – as per this reminder last Friday – pile-driving has begun for the Terminal 5 project. Today is the first day of a six-month window during which in-water work, such as pile-driving, is allowed; the other six months, it’s prohibited “to minimize effects on migratory fish.” If you have a comment or question:

• Terminal 5 community phone line: 206-787-6886
• Email: Terminal5_Outreach@portseattle.org

Phase 1 of the project, including the north berth, is expected to be finished by early 2021; then the south-berth work starts in Phase 2.

SATURDAY: West Seattle DAV ceremony honoring Buffalo Soldier, Tuskegee Airman

(WSB photo, July 27)

That’s our region’s last surviving Buffalo Soldier, Clyde Robinson, photographed at the Delridge headquarters of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 23 during last month’s Black Veterans Celebration (WSB coverage here). This Saturday, Chapter 23 invites you to a ceremony on his behalf and that of Tuskegee Airman William Booker. From the chapter’s treasurer/service officer Jack Kegley:

West Seattle Chapter of DAV, Chapter 23, is hosting a celebration of Clyde Robinson, the last surviving Buffalo Solder from World War II, with a commemorative plaque. We are also presenting the widow of Tuskegee Airman William Booker (RedTail) with a burial flag, which she was not presented with at the time of her husband’s funeral.

We will also have a speaker on women veterans counseling and a member of OutDoor Life, a recreational adventure series for Veterans and their families. All are invited to 4857 Delridge this Saturday, August 17th, for the ceremony and a fried chicken dinner. From 11 am until about 2 pm.

Paving is complete in Zone A and we have begun breaking the road in Zone C.

Zone A (SW Avalon Way from SW Spokane St to SW Yancy St)

· Paving the north side of the road on Monday, August 19. This work is weather dependent and subject to change.

o There will be no driveway access on August 19

o If you need access to your car, plan to park on side streets the night before. You will not be able to use your driveway while the pavement cures.

· Excavating the south side of the road and moving the SW Genesee St traffic signal as early as Tuesday, August 20

· Maintaining daytime driveway access when safe and feasible during the workday. If you need to leave your driveway, plan for delays of up to 1 hour. We encourage you to speak with our crews to check when excavation will take place near your property.

Zone E (35th Ave SW from SW Avalon Way to SW Alaska St)
We are continuing work on 35th Ave SW from SW Avalon Way to SW Alaska St, including:

· Beginning concrete paving on the west side tomorrow, August 16. This work is weather dependent and subject to change.

· No driveway access from Thursday to early Saturday to allow the concrete time to cure

· SW Snoqualmie St remaining closed for staging

We are monitoring the worksite on the weekends and will implement traffic control as needed.

While we are not conducting work in Zone B until we return to complete final paving, you may see private projects restricting parking and utilizing traffic control.

SDOT adds, “In early September, there will be multiple weekend closures of the intersection of SW Avalon Way and 35th Ave SW to allow us to rebuild the concrete panels in the intersection.” Plus, the weekly Q&A:

Things we’ve heard from the community
Each week, we’ll plan to address a few common questions we’ve heard from your neighbors.

When will you pave SW Avalon Way?
We anticipate paving SW Avalon Way (Zones A, B, and C) in mid-September. We will return to the corridor in late spring to complete final striping.

Are there noise permits for projects doing work at night?
Yes, there are permits to allow crews to conduct work at night. We cannot make impactful noises or jackhammer after 5 PM unless we have permission from the City’s Department of Construction & Inspections or need to complete emergency work.

Cars are cutting through my neighborhood at unsafe speeds to avoid construction. What can I do?
We have heard a lot of concerns about speeding and cut-through traffic. People driving, please be mindful of your neighbors and follow posted speed limits through the corridor and neighboring streets. If you are concerned about cut-through traffic, we can provide Vision Zero signs to post in your neighborhood. If you’re interested, please email us at avalonpaving@seattle.gov.

(Lincoln Park aerial photo from 2012, by Long Bach Nguyen

Seattle Parks is looking to the future and asking you what you think that future should hold. More nature? More amenities? Those and 30+ other questions are in this new survey. If you don’t spend much time in Parks facilities (which also include community centers and pools), they want to ask you about that too. It’s part of this process.

WEST SEATTLE ART: New signal-box portrait, different artist

(WSB photos)

That’s the newest signal-box portrait in West Seattle – local-raised Hollywood legend Frances Farmer, on the California/Alaska corner outside Easy Street Records. This time, the artist is Son Duong, who painted the box today:

He told WSB that the plan had been in the works for a few weeks, and today was the day he came down from his home base in Monroe to do the painting. He has another portrait outside of Easy Street, this one of Chris Cornell:

Inside Easy Street there’s another Frances Farmer tribute, as reported here in 2016.

SATURDAY: Your dog’s chance to be on CityDog Magazine’s cover

Is your pup ready for her/his closeup? Saturday’s the annual Cover Dog Model Search event for West Seattle-based CityDog Magazine. In case you haven’t already seen it in our calendar, here’s the announcement from publisher Brandie Ahlgren:

Unleash your dog’s inner super model at the 14th annual CityDog Cover Dog Model Search. That’s right, West Seattle’s own CityDog Magazine is looking for its next top model (furry and four-legged, that is…) to grace the cover of the magazine and raising money for animals while they’re at it.

Big dogs, little dogs, young dogs, old dogs… ALL dogs are welcome to “compete” for the chance to be on the cover of CityDog Magazine. And, because they think ALL dogs are super models, each and every canine contestant will get their photo on the CityDog website and in the print magazine, distributed to thousands of fellow Fido lovers!

Thriftway is at 4201 SW Morgan.

WEST SEATTLE WILDLIFE: Young hawk’s research role

Those beautiful tail feathers belong to a young Cooper’s Hawk. The photos are from Vlad Oustimovitch, who explains:

The Urban Raptor Conservancy has been banding Cooper’s Hawks as part of a study for several years. This juvenile male was banded this morning by Jake, a volunteer from the conservancy. It is one of four offspring from a nest next to our Gatewood property in the Orchard Street Ravine.

The URC explains that ongoing study here, saying that Seattle is one of several major cities where Cooper’s Hawks are studied, after they began expanding their range into urban areas a quarter-century ago. The URC summarizes, “Since 2012, the number of nesting pairs has increased each year, with high nest success rates, high fledgling productivity, little evidence of migration, strong site fidelity, and mostly short post-fledging dispersal distances.” Last year they documented “46 nesting attempts, 40 successful nests, and 145 fledglings” in Seattle; the year’s full report is here (including some West Seattle photos).

BIZNOTES: Whittaker, Shug’s, Swinery

We’re continuing to watch a long list of local spaces. Notes to share today:

THE WHITTAKER: As Whole Foods gets ready to open, two more of the remaining spaces at 4755 Fauntleroy Way SW have tenants. We noticed these in building permits, and the complex’s online map confirms them: Ziva Nails (which permit documents refer to as “Pink Polish II”) next to CityMD and City Sweats, an “infrared wellness spa,” next to BECU.

WHAT’S UP WITH SHUG’S? When we reported last October that a mini version of the popular soda fountain was headed to 3800 California SW, co-proprietor Colleen Wilkie said they hoped to open “spring/summer.” With summer almost over, a few readers asked us what’s up. We pinged Colleen, who replied: “We are STILL waiting on the City of Seattle for permits. We had lots of fun serving ice cream at The Alki Art Fair and nice encouragement from the community. It is nice to know we are supported as we go through this process. Wish we had better news to report.”

And one more note:

THE SWINERY: Co-proprietor Kim Leveille wants you to know that the butcher shop/café at 3207 California SW is now closed on Mondays.

|    Comments Off on BACK TO SCHOOL: Crossing guard needed
 |   Safety | West Seattle news | West Seattle schools

With classes starting at Seattle Public Schools three weeks from today, at least one local school needs a new crossing guard. Jean, who has been a guard at 59th/Admiral – just south of Alki Elementary – for two years, is leaving the job and asked if we would let people know about the opening. She says it involves, “An hour in the morning; and an hour in the afternoon. If someone can only do the morning, or the afternoon, that’s fine too. Holidays, school breaks, snow days and summers off! They supply the gear: a flag + clothing options: safety vest, long light-weight rain jacket, and a heavy winter coat.” Paid training for this school year starts August 28th, so if you are interested, let the district know ASAP – the contact is Yvonne Carpenter, 206-252-0907.

Get Fit, West Seattle: Fall edition about to launch

Is this the fall you get fit? West Seattle Runner (WSB sponsor) is about to launch the fall edition of its fun, free way to do it – Get Fit, West Seattle. From WSR proprietors Lori McConnell and Tim McConnell (above, photographed during last month’s Float Dodger 5K):

Get Fit Kickoff August 17th, Saturday at 8 am:

Come out for one mile to kick off your training for the Seattle Half Marathon! We will start with one mile and it is fine to run, run/walk, or walk! This program is designed for BEGINNERS!! We look forward to coaching you through training with group runs on Wednesday nights and Saturday mornings. We designed this as a Couch-to-Half Marathon program, so no experience as a runner is necessary. We will be providing clinics along the way to teach you all you need to know. This is a free program and we encourage you to share with your family and friends and neighbors!

Did you know?

1) Runners are at lower risk for developing cataracts

2) Running improves performance on cognitive tasks, including memory and visuospatial functioning, executive functioning, attention and reaction times

3) Running enhances creativity

4) Running reduces risk for Alzheimer’s, stroke and cardiovascular disease by: slowing/stopping the typical age-related loss in brain tissue and preserving brain structures like your frontal lobe and hippocampus (this in part has to do with blood flow improvements, but also increasing connectivity in key areas and lowering inflammation)

5) Running can provide short and long-term healing for anxiety and depression (think improving neurotransmitter functioning, strengthening brain structures and a sense of self-efficacy, just to scrape the surface)

Tomorrow night (Wednesday, August 14th), you can find out more at the pre-launch Get Fit Information Night, 7 pm at WSR (2743 California SW): “Come and learn about our Get Fit West Seattle program! We can answer any questions during the info night and we will share the program details with you.” Questions before then? Email lori@westseattlerunner.com – or just show up!

COUNTDOWN: 10 days to 2019 West Seattle Beer & Music Festival

That’s a video invitation to the 2019 West Seattle Beer and Music Festival on August 23-24, now just 10 days away at Alki Masonic Center in The Junction (4736 40th SW). Here’s your reminder of what it’s all about:

Sponsored by Beer Star, West Seattle Beer and Music Festival creates an outdoor, summer party vibe, ideal for fostering connections amongst the community. Patrons can taste beers from over 20 local and national breweries while grooving to a mix of funk and soul musical acts.

It was started by West Seattle beer and food entrepreneur Joe Jeannot, who felt there was a need for this type of event: “I’ve always wanted to throw a beer festival. West Seattle doesn’t have a lot of festivals so I thought this was the perfect neighborhood to launch. I just love bringing people together, I’ve been doing it my whole life.”

New this year is a Run4Food .5k race benefiting West Seattle Food Bank, the festival’s charity partner. The costumed .5k race takes place at 2:45 PM on Saturday, August 24th, just before General Admission gates open at 3 PM. Individuals can purchase tickets for $40, groups of six for $230. $10 of every individual ticket and $50 of every group ticket goes to West Seattle Food Bank. Admission includes entry to the Saturday session of the festival, tasting tokens, and a glass. Awards for top qualifiers and best team costume will be given by race sponsor, Project 968.

As a city, Seattle knows its beer. According to Forbes magazine, Seattle has the 9th-most breweries per capita of all US cities, and the third-most microbreweries overall. The Festival’s carefully-curated selection of beers aims to keep even Seattleites with the most experienced palettes satisfied. The selection will be wide-ranging, with a focus on specialty batches.

“I love specialty beers that start a conversation and make you check the nose, look and taste the beer,” says Jeannot. “I tried to assemble those at the festival.”

The music stage is headlined by New York based teacher-turned-rapper Mega Ran, whom Noisey once called ‘your new favorite rapper’. Last year’s crowd favorite Marmalade headlines the music stage Friday night. For those that don’t want the party to end, there are nightly after parties DJ’d by DJ Indica Jones – beloved amongst Seattle’s hip, underground dance scene. Dogs are also welcome in the Festival on Saturday the 24th from 1-5 PM.

The best ticket deal is two-day VIP, which includes admission to the festival both days with early admission Saturday for an exclusive tasting event, entry to the nightly #NotDoneYetAfterParty, and an exclusive tasting glass with 20 taste tokens to use throughout the weekend. Tickets available online from Stranger Tickets. A portion of each ticket sale goes to West Seattle Food Bank.

See the music and beer lineups here. And if you live nearby – here’s a special notice for you:

DEVELOPMENT: ‘Early Community Outreach’ site tour for Admiral project

Another West Seattle redevelopment project has a site tour scheduled for interested community members, as part of the “Early Community Outreach for Design Review” process. One week from today – at 6 pm Tuesday, August 20th – you’re invited to join members of the project team at 2606 45th SW, where seven townhouses are planned to replace a single-family house. These “early outreach” meetings are usually casual Q&A opportunities, for projects that won’t be having other meetings later

FOLLOWUP: SDOT says it’s finished some timing changes in hopes of speeding up buses south of downtown

More potential progress in unclogging the southbound bus jam out of downtown. SDOT tells WSB that it’s made the tweaks that it said one week ago would be done within two weeks. From SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson:

(W)e’ve completed the following adjustments to optimize the movement of buses.

Additionally, we are continuing to make incident management a high priority during the morning and afternoon commute.

*Revising signal timing at 1st Ave S & S Dearborn St, and Alaskan Way S & S Dearborn St to further aid transit operation – Completed

*Further optimizing the signal timing plan for the 1st Ave S corridor through Pioneer Square while emphasizing the north and south movements – Completed

*Implementing pre-game event timing to support the stadium events including Mariners, Seahawks and upcoming concerts – Ready to implement as needed for scheduled events

The next “scheduled event” in the stadium zone is the Rolling Stones concert at CenturyLink Field tomorrow night. Then on Thursday, as reported here last night, Metro plans a southbound-only rerouting test.
