12:26 AM: Police are blocking Harbor Avenue SW by Salty’s on Alki (1936 Harbor SW; WSB sponsor) right now for a gunfire investigation. A 911 caller reported seeing someone who appeared to be shooting at cars in the area; police arrived and have reported finding both casings and “unfired rounds.”
12:52 AM: Harbor has reopened. Officers told dispatch they “recovered about 20 fired and unfired 9-millimeter casings.”
1:12 AM: Out on a separate gunfire call in North Delridge, officers told dispatch they’ve found “four shell (casings) in the 2600 block of SW Brandon.”
Continuing our resurgence in coyote sightings – a texter reported just after 10 pm, ‘Just spotted a cute coyote on Belvidere Ave SW and SW Lander Street. Had my dogs with me so was a bit nervous, but he ran off in the other direction.” Earlier this week, we received a report we didn’t publish at the time – Ted reported, early Tuesday morning, “I just heard a coyote barking pretty close to my house near 37th/97th in Arbor Heights.” That was five days after this Upper Fauntleroy sighting, with photos. A reminder – this isn’t cause for panic, just an FYI; this state-produced Living With Wildlife guide has lots of info on co-existing with them.

STOLEN CAR TRASHED, PUSHED DOWN SLOPE: Lorelai‘s 2018 white Hyundai Elantra was stolen Wednesday night or early Thursday near Fauntleroy/Edmunds. This morning it was found about 25 feet down a slope by the Pee Wee baseball fields at Riverview Playfield. Here’s her photo of the car after it was towed out.
She knows how it got there because she found a social-media video showing her car being damaged by a burnout, then shoved down the slope. She adds, “There were also Texas license plates in my car (NSJ-7764)” when found. Any info? Police report number is 23-190153
PLATE AND LOCK LEFT BEHIND: Another incident involving discovery of an out-of-state plate – the photo is from T in Westwood:
T found those in the street after two sets of vehicles sped through their neighborhood – 27th SW between Thistle and Kenyon – this morning around 6:30 am. The first round, T says, involved a black SUV and silver sedan; after that, a dark sedan and white SUV. They called 911; the plate and lock were found later: “I am posting this in case the car descriptions ring a bell or license belongs to someone. Racing on 27th is very common but we have noticed an increase lately.”
West Seattle Summer Fest is now exactly one week away – starting next Friday (July 14th)!
One of the signature features will be the Kids Zone, featuring inflatables. The West Seattle Junction Association is hiring helpers 15+ to “watch the inflatables and control how many kids are going in at a time.” Pay is $17/hour, with four shifts open:

For the third time in a week, a West Seattle 7-11 store has been held up. The 35th/Avalon 7-11 was robbed early this morning; last Friday morning, robbers hit the Harbor Avenue and Highland Park 7-11s. In this case, the 911 call came in around 5:20 am today. Archived audio shows officers reported that the robbers were described as Black men in their early 20s, wearing black clothing; a gun was “implied” but not seen. The robbers got away with cash, according to an SPD summary filed later. The dispatcher noted a similar description for the robbers in a holdup in the King County Sheriff’s Office jurisdiction an hour earlier.
3:58 PM: Thanks to Christy for the tip and photo. The High Point and Southwest libraries closed at 2 pm and will be closed all weekend because of what the door sign describes as “a pest issue requiring chemical treatment.” Book drops are closed too. We have an inquiry out to Seattle Public Library headquarters in hopes of finding out more. Back in May, another reader tip led to this report about a similar situation stemming from a bedbug problem at the HP branch.
5:04 PM: As a reader comments below, Delridge is now closed too, and that’s reflected in the reply we just received from SPL spokesperson Laura Gentry:
We have temporarily closed the Delridge, High Point and Southwest branches due to bedbug sightings by staff at these three locations in the last 24 hours.
We are taking aggressive steps to remediate the issue; and unfortunately, that means keeping the branches closed throughout the weekend. These branches are scheduled to receive treatment early Monday morning, so we are keeping them and their book drops closed until that has occurred and they are cleared for re-entry (about two hours following application).
We are very sorry for the inconvenience this causes our patrons in the Southwest Region of the city, but it is important we act quickly to limit the impacts of this issue by immediately closing these locations, applying treatment, and discarding impacted materials.
We thank our eagle-eyed staff who quickly alert us to anything that might negatively impact patrons, staff, or Library spaces!
They’re not sure yet what time the branches will reopen Monday – likely by early afternoon – we’ll update when we have word.
ADDED SUNDAY: SPL says all three will reopen Monday at noon.
2:19 PM: Another crash of note – this one reported on the westbound West Seattle Bridge, and reported to involve an incident-response truck as well as a second vehicle. SFD and SPD are both responding. The exact location isn’t clear, and it’s currently out of traffic-camera range.

3:40 PM: Officers have just told dispatch that all lanes on the bridge are open again. Meantime, SFD tells us two people were hurt – a 39-year-old man and 22-year-old man, both in stable condition when taken to hospitals. SDOT confirms its truck – one of five usually deployed around the city – was responding to another incident when hit.
4:24 PM: SPD confirms that “the 22-year-old driver was taken into custody for suspicion of DUI.”

12:37 PM: Thanks for the tip. Emergency responders are at the scene of a crash at 8th/Roxbury. The tipster says a car is “flipped over,” but it’s only a single-engine SFD response, not a “rescue extrication.” Avoid the area for a while.
1:40 PM: Metro says the bus routes are back to normal, indicating the scene is cleared.
4:19 PM: We asked SFD about injuries: One woman around 60 years old was treated at the scene but declined to be taken to a hospital.

That’s the trailer for “ODESZA Presents: The Last Goodbye,” a music documentary playing in theaters worldwide tonight and next Wednesday. It’s not playing in West Seattle but we’re telling you about it because the filmmakers include three locals who sent this to let us – and you – know:
A feature film made by two West Seattleites – Kyle Seago & Andrew Franks – and one White Centerian – Kusanagi – will be playing in theaters all over Seattle (and worldwide in 700 theaters) on Friday, July 7 and Wednesday, July 12.
The film is a concert film/documentary on ODESZA, the Grammy Award-nominated and festival-headlining artist who got their start in Bellingham. The film was primarily shot over three sold-out shows at Climate Pledge Arena in 2022 and features footage from over the past decade telling the story of how ODESZA got their start and rose to international acclaim.
Andrew Franks worked as co-director and editor and is a Riverview resident, Kyle Seago was co-director/producer and also calls Riverview home. Kusanagi was the main director/editor and resides in White Center.
We’ll all be at AMC Southcenter for the 7 pm screening (tonight), but the film is also playing all over town at the SIFF Egyptian, Regal Meridian, AMC Thornton Place, etc.

10:50 AM: For those who’ve passed this in the last 15 minutes or so and wondered: Police responded to a report of a person walking on the West Seattle Bridge near the Delridge offramp. That happens more often than you might expect. When officers reached the person, the person was reportedly combative, so officers called for backup. The situation is reported to be under control now but is (or was) briefly blocking one or two westbound lanes.
10:55 AM: SFD medics have been called; we don’t know yet whether for the detained person, police, or both.
4:19 PM: SFD tells us the person was a woman around 30 years old and: “She was transported to Harborview for further care. Reported as suspected drug use.”

Family and friends are remembering Daniel Spengler and sharing this remembrance with his community:
Daniel Robert Spengler
Age: 77Date of Birth: 1-21-1946, Seattle, to parents Daniel F. Spengler and Virginia R. Spengler (Lee). His family were West Seattle residents for over 70 years and active in Our Lady of Guadalupe Church and community. Dan lived in his family home until his passing.
He passed away peacefully on July 3, 2023, at home in the arms of his wife.
He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Tamsen Spengler, daughter Lisa Spengler, son in-law John Price, granddaughter Piper Price, brother Dan Spengler, sisters Donna Harrison and Karen Metcalf, and many cousins, all whom he loved dearly. He enjoyed spending time with his cousins. He even assisted with raising some of them. He truly appreciated their assistance during his battle with lung cancer and throughout his life.
He enjoyed participating in the Junior Achievement Program in school and was the Valedictorian for his graduation from Briscoe, Tukwila, WA and attended O’Dea High School, Seattle.
Dan was a Shipfitter in the Boilermakers Local Union; he became a Business Representative and then an Organizer for Brotherhood of Boilermakers Local Union 104. He subsequently was promoted to Union Organizer for the International Brotherhood of Boilermakers. Dan attended many training seminars regarding labor organizing and was an effective organizer in many states. He was motivated by his desire to improve the lives of working men and women.
He was a dedicated board member of the United Friends Group Homes in West Seattle. He loved visiting with the group home residents and always made them smile and laugh. He often brought his Wheaten Terrier, Fanny, there to visit with him, which the residents truly enjoyed.
Family and friends will remember him for his love of gardening, especially his roses and his love, training and caring for rescued Wheaten Terriers. He was always there for his family and friends with a helping hand when needed, and shared a true sense of humor with them. He had a love of music and always had a line from a tune to share with others. He often would sing a few lines of the song “Happy Trails” to folks as they were leaving.
Dan requested no formal service be held and a private gravesite burial be held for family only.

Proud dad David Chang shares this story of Fourth of July giving and gratitude:
We want to thank our community for overwhelming support during the 4th of July parade.
With your help, Sophia Chang, Mallory Browne, both 8 years old, and Gavin Chang, 11 years old (Sophia’s cousin visiting from Cherry Hill, NJ), were able to sell over 270 watermelon popsicles.
As planned, the proceeds were delivered to Seattle Children’s Hospital on Wednesday, totaling $266.48. Mr. Dondi Cupp, Senior VP, Chief Development Officer, graciously accepted the donation from our West Seattle community to help those in need of medical care at Seattle Children’s Hospital.
The kids sold the popsicles from a sidewalk stand. David explains, “A former classmate of Sophia recently needed care at Seattle Children’s Hospital, which prompted her to think about donating the proceeds to help children who are hurt and sick.”
Starting in exactly one week, work will be under way to convert the heart of The Junction into a festival zone for West Seattle Summer Fest!
The festival itself doesn’t officially start until 1 pm Friday (July 14th), but the night before has become Summer Fest Eve, a fun night to come to The Junction and walk in the closed-to-motorized-vehicles streets before the weekend wildness begins. Summer Fest Eve also coincides with the monthly West Seattle Art Walk, which is not a Junction-only event but has many Junction participants. You can preview them here – and if you’re up for live music that night, one of two Art of Music performances, 6 pm-7:45 pm, will be in The Junction:
Hopscotch will perform in the pop-up ground-level Senior Center of West Seattle space on the southeast corner of California/Oregon. Also planned for Summer Fest Eve – DancePowered‘s flash mob at the Walk All Ways crossing around 7:15 pm, buskers at KeyBank Plaza, and “tons of colored chalk lying around” for sidewalk/pavement art. West Seattle’s next big summer event will bring a crowd to Alki Beach on Saturday (July 8th) for the Seafair Pirates’ Landing. We’ve checked with a spokespirate to get details. Like last year – unlike pre-pandemic years – this will be “just” a landing, not a daylong festival. They’re aiming to arrive around 1 pm, but we’re warned it could be a little earlier, or later. As usual, you’ll hear offshore cannon fire as they approach. On the beach, look for the taped-off area by Alki Bathhouse for the path they’re expected to follow on arrival. On the street, you’ll see their legendary parade boat, the Moby Duck; their spokespirate says they’re also planning to visit Christo’s on Alki, El Chupacabra, and the Benbow Room while in West Seattle.

In the comment section for this morning’s traffic watch, Ellen posted an alert about an “injured peregrine falcon” on the low-bridge path. A short time ago, we received this report and photo, sent by Tracy, explaining how the situation turned out:

This morning at 5:30 am on the Spokane Street Bridge bike path, a small group of morning bike commuters assisted in helping a fledgling peregrine falcon that had flown down from the nesting sites on the higher West Seattle Bridge.
We were able to place the young bird into a box with the help from volunteer Jenn from the Urban Raptor Conservancy. Patti from URC said, “She is now at PAWS to eat quail and grow her wings. We hope to release her to her parents in a few days.”Thanks to everyone who stopped to help this morning.
Something similar happened in 2020 (see that WSB story for more background on the bridge-nesting falcons). As for what’w happened since then, the URC’s 2022 report tells a mostly sad story.
Hyundai Elantras remain a popular target for car thieves, and Aimeé is looking for hers after it was stolen from an apartment-complex parking lot in the 6900 block of Delridge Way SW overnight. It’s a 2017 black Hyundai Elantra, license plate CCL2178, police report # 23-189708.

9:11 AM: Thanks for the tips. Police have closed 18th SW near the 7100 block [vicinity map] as they attempt to arrest someone who we are told is a suspect in a carjacking. The suspect is believed to be armed and at a particular residence. SWAT has been called in. Avoid the area.
9:47 AM: Going back through archived police-radio audio, the original incident was reported around 8:10 am as an attempted armed carjacking, nearby on 18th SW, with the would-be carjacker leaving the scene on foot.
10:25 AM: Not resolved yet. We’re continuing to monitor and will add updates when we have them.
10:54 AM: Just received video from an anonymous resident who says it shows the attempted carjacking – a grocery-delivery driver was dropping off the items when in the background, you see the person run up and get in the car. Though the video cuts off, the resident says the driver subsequently pulled the would-be carjacker out to keep him from stealing the car. (Video removed for now per request of the resident.)
11:10 AM: Police are closing off Dumar as well between 16th/Delridge.
12:43 PM: Still not resolved. Also of note, the road closures are rerouting Metro 128.
2:04 PM: Not resolved yet.
3:09 PM: Seventh hour.
4:14 PM: Eighth hour.
5:22 PM: They’ve declared the house “clear” – we’re going back over to verify. Meantime, what took all this time were the steps it took to get to that point. They had to get a view inside the house, which required breaking windows to get a drone inside. They also used various devices – from flashbangs to “pepper balls” and gas – with the aim of temporarily incapacitating anyone inside. The house has multiple levels, plus an attic/crawl space, so each of those levels took time to investigate. The SPD SWAT team was assisted by K-9s and by equipment from the King County Sheriff’s Office. Another time-consuming component is that a search warrant is required, so they have to get one drawn up and signed by a judge.
5:40 PM: Our crew has verified at the scene that no one was found in the house or its outbuildings. Streets in the area, including Dumar, have reopened.
8:49 AM: WSP reports the ramp from West Seattle Bridge to northbound I-5 is closed because of someone “throwing debris.” Also, there is a police response in Puget Ridge, on 18th SW – we’re on our way to find out more.
8:58 AM: Update from WSP, the debris suspect is in custody, and they’ll reopen the ramp once it’s cleaned up.

Rosalie says she saw them all on Alki today. Tomorrow (Thursday) you have one more chance at a low-low tide, out to -3.0 feet at about quarter till 2 pm; Seattle Aquarium volunteer beach naturalists will be out again too.
