January 26, 2009 at 8:29 pm #589587Topic: An Outbreak of Ducky Perp Fever?
in forum Open DiscussionDuckitudeMemberHi All: There seems to have been an outbreak of ducky theft and abuse fever this last month. The latest can be viewed at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VbiTRlqou_A
It took place at 8:16 p.m. this last Sunday, and, as before (see https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=3439), the perp had to work fairly hard to get the glasses off the ducky. They were firmly attached. One of the larger duckies had their 2009 glasses stolen three days before.
I don’t know about you all, but I find this kind of treatment of a neighbor who is providing a nice experience for his neighbors (I can’t tell you how many people love the duckies) as REALLY OUT OF LINE. Does it rise to criminal behavior? Likely. How upset should I be about it? Hard to upset someone with my level of duckitude… but I am getting there…
The duckies are planning a rally in support of their lost cousin and the loss of their party glasses. They will be carrying signs that say “Stop the ducky abuse.” “Return our ducky brother.” “Duckies deserve respect.” And I will be posting stills from the videos of the perps near the duckies for everyone’s edification.
I ask “is there a fever spreading around?” because, although I have provided such garden art for over four years now, I have NOT seen so much theft or attempted thefts. Must be the economy, huh?

Also, as I reiterate there. Any time we mention a sponsor in ANY context – whether it’s a calendar listing, a news story, even an answer to a question, we disclose that they are a sponsor by putting (WSB sponsor) after the mention. This is a level of disclosure that I haven’t seen matched anywhere else but we decided to promise it when we became a business more than a year ago. Just so everyone knows that, if you didn’t already. These people, by the way, didn’t even send us a press release about the event; we put it in the calendar after finding information elsewhere, because, whether you agree with it or not, it was a big event happening in West Seattle.

Mike D.Participantvaleriej,
A couple ideas on how you can get a feel for the North part of the Delridge neighborhood:
1) Meet a number of people who live and or work in the North Delridge neighborhood by helping out at this Saturday mornings Adopt-A-Street litter pick up of Delridge Way. Details are here: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=13670
2) Attend the monthly meeting of the North Delridge Neighborhood Council which meets the first Wednesday of each month at the Delridge Library from 6:30 > 7:45pm
January 23, 2009 at 11:07 pm #589559csw2119ParticipantI have no idea how to lobby, but I am so sick of pathic people running puppy mills and people being cruel to animals, I am going to Olympia for an event the Humane Society has posted on their site. I would like to find a couple of people passionate about animal rights to go to Olympia with me. I will drive.
This event starts in the morning, Thurs. Feb. 12th(so plan on taking the day off from work). A Humane Society rep will speak to the entire group advising us on what to do. I have no idea how many people will be participating but I imagine 50 – 100+? from all over the state. You may

January 20, 2009 at 9:46 am #655480In reply to: Furry Faces Foundation
WSBKeymasterAlso note that Furry Faces has just gotten involved with a show coming up at the Admiral Theater on February 13th. I haven’t even condensed it into the Events calendar yet but here’s the full text of the news release I got tonight:
CATHY SORBO AND ROD LONG BRING THEIR COMIC
ANTI-VALENTINE SHOW TO THE ADMIRAL THEATER
(The show will Benefit Furry Faces Foundation)
Seattle, WA — (January, 2009) — Aptly named, “Love Sucks” (when it’s good), comics Cathy Sorbo and Rod Long bring their skewed love observations to the historic Admiral Theater in West Seattle. It’s not lost on them that the February show falls on Friday the 13th.
“This is kind of an anti-valentine show,” muses Sorbo. “February 14th puts a strain on single people or those who might not be dating currently. Even couples in love will undoubtedly recognize some of the dumb things we all do in relationships and get a chuckle.”
Sorbo and Long will present their stand-up embellished with relationship themes and cap the evening off with a mini-counseling session with the audience.
“Love ain’t all hearts and roses,” submits Sorbo. “I’ve been married going on 18 years now, but I’m still a recovering tramp — you know what they say: one day at a time.”
Sorbo says the dating thing tends to be biased. “Girls go to way more trouble to look good for a date. Guys just stand back, look in the mirror and decide whether to wear their baseball cap forward or backward.”
Rod Long weighs in on his participation:
“I can’t wait to get my twice-divorced a$$ onstage and give out sound relationship advice.” He adds, “I have always found that people are always in such ridiculous emotional transition that it’s hard to find somebody that just might be your soul mate. You take your chances with internet. People always lie. The only site I’d trust is E-Felon.com. At least you know the picture is current and where they hang out at night!”
The show will also serve as a benefit for Furry Faces Foundation. The foundation aides in many programs that benefit people and their pets. For example; “It’s Hip to Be Snipped” program helps fund spay/neuter of pets whose people who are on fixed/limited incomes and also the spay/neuter of feral cats.
The group who encourages, adoption—instead of shopping also sponsors “Oliver’s Fund” which assists people on restricted income with unexpected veterinarian bills, food and other pet care necessities. They seek out donations of quality pet food which is disbursed to individuals on our Oliver’s Fund client list and to Seattle Area food banks.
The Admiral is asking people to bring;
• Dog Leashes, cat/dog treats, grooming brushes/combs
• Cat and dog toys, which we will give to shelters for cat and dog environment enrichment programs
• Fleece blankets
• Nutritionally sound dog and cat food such as Taste of the Wild; Canidade/Felidade; Nutro/Max Cat; Precise.
Tickets for the event are $15.00 and are being sold through Brown Paper Tickets: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/53991. Tickets will also be sold at the door the night of the show. Doors open at 8:45 and the show starts at 9:30 p.m.

January 17, 2009 at 7:08 am #653758In reply to: telephone service – better on Qwest than comcast?
AnonymousInactivejenny12 wrote:
“Wowie! Sorry I didn’t call Ken. Opps. Both of you are great!!”
jenny12, Ken has vastly more knowledge than I have. Rely on Ken’s advice, not mine.
“Well, let’s talk about email first. I am on C. Cast, but now am wondering about that. GEE! I need to tackle the phone first.”
I agree. Based on what you have written here, I think you should first switch your phone service to Qwest with no extras.
“On email issue: Scott B says: ‘many of Comcast’s end users’ Microsoft Windows computers are infected by viruses’
‘Viruses – ugh, makes me want to run away from C. Cast.
‘Since I have an apple, maybe I am much safer from the viruses? I have never gotten one in 18 months of living here.’
Since your computer is an Apple/Macintosh computer, it is unlikely that your computer is infected by a virus that makes your computer part of a botnet. Home computers running Microsoft Windows and hooked up to a cable modem or a DSL modem are the most likely victims/perpretators.
“So, for better email outgoing service (not getting stuck in outbox) I need to either talk with C. Cast about these issues
or change to Yahoo etc. If I talked with C. Cast, I’d say:
“1. ‘send email through your ISP’s email server (probably smtp.comcast.net) instead of 587.'”
You are an end user. You (as an end user) should send email through your ISP’s email server. That email server probably is named
smtp.comcast.net.
“gosh, How the heck am I going to get the ‘tech support’ to do that. :)”
That is the problem. An ISP’s rep can tell you
exactly what to do, but you may not understand the instructions.
“2. And then you say: ‘Some of your emails are probably not being delivered because your recipients’ ISPs are using DNSBL(s)
to block spam.’
“Oh boy, I can’t get that changed can I?”
Sure you can. Send your emails through your ISP’s email server instead of sending your emails directly.
“‘smtp.comcast.net may have slowdowns as a result of the increased load after so many Comcast end users switched from sending email directly.’
“You lost me on this last part. Is it important?”
No, it is probably not important since it is speculation on my part.
“Ok, so all in all, sounds like I’d have to call Tech Support to get
have less outgoing email issues.”
I dunno about that. To be frank, I suspect you are causing your own problems by sending email directly insteading of sending email to your ISP’s email server. An ISP’s email server is usually excluded from DNSBLs AFAIK.
“I am so scared they will screw it up royally.
“Now I am a bit bummed. Do you think Qwest is better internet service? I have heard it is slower. Would you suggest my changing? The outgoing email is not a huge deal.”
Jen,
My personal internet service is Qwest DSL, and my ISP is avvanta.com.
Maybe you should take small steps. I thought your main concern was the voice quality of your phone calls. If that is the case, then Qwest phone service utilizing a pair of copper lines currently provides the best voice quality AFAIK.
“Scott says: ‘My recommendation for an end user with your skill level is to use a free WWW email provider. There is no configuration necessary beyond enabling cookies in your WWW browser (and that is probably the default anyway).
“Yahoo
https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us
and
Gmail
https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail
are popular.”
“Now, I have it set up so that my nice little ‘apple mail’
icon on my desktop goes to my nice little C. Cast email.
“Will this set up change if I go to Yahoo, Gmail etc.?”
Sorry… dunno… that is too specific for me, and I have never used a Macintosh/Apple computer. I have never used “Apple Mail.”
“If switched to Yahoo etc, would I still need to do
the changing of 587 and that fun stuff?”
No.
“Now…the more crucial issue: the phone! It is nutsy bad!
“Is Qwest my only other alternative other than C. Cast.
“Is it what you would suggest?”
Yes.
I haven’t kept up with home phone use alternatives, but I am certain of this:
The phoneline copper pair goes directly into every home that can have phone service, and a telephone hooked up to the phoneline copper pair currently provides the best voice quality.
It is the “gold standard” for home phone service.
“I hear that I can keep my same phone number. I just hope
that I don’t lose service as I switch companies.
“Guess I call
the Qwest first.”
“I should try to get credit from C. Cast for all the weeks of bad phone service. Last time I asked they actually did it.
“And credit for the tv outlets they activated at my charge,
and then decided to deactivate to “help” my phones.”
“I think my first order of business is to call Qwest.”
I agree.
“I am totally
overwhelmed by the variety of long distance services mentioned by folks on this forum. I have ‘free’ long distance now, probably because I have this bundle with C. Cast. What do you suggest,
for simplicity sake?”
If you use Qwest for your phoneline, then I suggest you buy the cheapest phone service possibe and request no long distance service for your phoneline (1-800 and 1-888 numbers will still work) then buy a long-distance card at CostCo. That would be the cheapest. Long-distance calling is dirt-cheap compared to thirty years ago.
