Might we also note that Hotwire Coffee was the very first West Seattle business to buy an ad on WSB. As this is now a family-owned business running on ad revenue, their support, and that of the other advertisers who have joined since, is vital to keep WSB going and growing. (And advertisers get something out of it too – they get seen more than 14,000x/daily.) Not to mention, Lora is a cool person. And we’re collaborating with her on Movies on the Wall this year (have you “voted” yet?

The Zippy’s saga is my favorite story from among the dozens we covered this week.

Especially what emerged in comments and in an e-mail we received after the “opening day” post – the fact that the owner was a well-known punk rocker back in the day.

(Not to mention the fact that WSB readers apparently swarmed the store!)

We usually google people involved in stories as we’re writing them, to be sure we don’t miss interesting factoids like that, but I guess the missing link here was that we didn’t know previously that “Zippy” was his rocker nickname! — TR

Washington State Dept of Early Learning has a website which permits anyone to view basic information about licensed child care facilities, including information about licensing complaints that are found to be valid (proven); it does not report CPS information. If you do not find the provider that you are looking for, the business could be unlicensed. Its a good source to use when looking at child care. Find it here:

Just a data point, we had already reported this two weeks ago within an hour of when it was publicly announced:

Yes, we’ve reported that repeatedly. If you see something in the paper and not here, 85% of the time it’s because we’ve long since reported it (meetings on the same night as opposed to 2 weeks after they happen) – or else because it’s an enterprise feature story (we have a lot of those, WSH has a lot of those, everybody does ’em on their own timetable and editorial interest). I don’t make a deal out of reporting most happenings first (it’s the inherent nature of a continually updated site) but since you mentioned it, I just want to point that out. Kind of like the Morton’s articles in both citywide papers today – we reported the Pharmaca change a MONTH ago.

Anyway, regarding the multifamily code, it’s been going on more than a year but our first significant report was in October:

Amyeby — I, too, am glad everything worked out – and that this turned out to be a nonstory – I assume this is the event to which you refer?

Update: Fire call on 42nd not a fire

Sounds like, from the responses here and on the front page, that there was concern and that the information from wsb helped to allay that concern. The resulting story said, “This is not a story.” But if they hadn’t been there, people wouldn’t have known what happened and the rumors might well have gotten out of hand.

I spent a lot of years in the news biz and these decisions are often difficult. (wsb posted a response to the community in the comment thread on the original blog article (about halfway through the comments). https://westseattleblog.com/blog/?p=6803)

I believe wsb shows amazing good taste and restraint — there’s a public interest and public safety component here too.

I hope the response, on both sides, causes wsb to continue to weigh each occurrence carefully, as they have done. And I also hope it doesn’t cause wsb to stop performing this valuable community service.
