    Hey all,

I know we’ve had discussions about vets before, but we need one who is specifically GREAT with cats. We’ve been to Lien and weren’t all that impressed.

My last vet, out in Redmond, is going to be REALLY hard to beat – they were careful to try to figure out what was going on first and then order only the tests to confirm, saving me money while still providing the best care. When my kitty ended up dying of cancer, they not only sent me a giant bouquet of flowers, they found out that a friend had also sent me one, and waited a few days so I’d have new flowers when the first ones died. In addition, everyone in the office signed the card with a special memory of my kitty, or what they liked best about him. WAY above and beyond. Yet they weren’t horrifically expensive.

Anyone know of a comparable type of experience here? Our little boy Sam has all the symptoms of hyperthyroid, and is the right age for it. I don’t want someone who’s going to run tests for everything that ever existed when we’re already pretty sure we know what’s up.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance!

I’ve had great care and service, as has a friend of mine recently who had to put her dog down, by Lien. I’m also dealing with the hyperthyroid condition right now with a kitty. Email me offline if you want to discuss – I’m taking the procedure route very soon…ttaylor764@msn.com

    Animal Clinic of Roxbury

    9608 30th Ave SW, Seattle

One vet, one assistant, one receptionist. No bells or whistles anywhere. This is not for people who need new everything, and designer everything. You won’t find stacks of expensive food or do-dads any where. In fact, the building is a little run down. However, first rate care.

Sweetest vet in the whole world. Uses the least expensive, most obvious treatment first. Today, in fact, all his suggestions were home remedies. Wants to see if that works first. Sometimes when we’re given the bill, I have actually asked *is that all? Are you sure?* We’ve gone through 2 deaths and they are very gentle.

Also, a good sign to me. There is always some new creature in the back yard, (duck, pony, etc) that his daughter has picked up somewhere. E-mail me if you have any more specific questions.

I’ve gone to Lien for over 15 years now, and highly recommend Dr. Tim Krabel there, he’s excellent with, and very very knowledgeable about, cats. His wife is a vet there too. I had a kitty (who meant the world to me) that made it to 19 with their helpful care, and when she passed away the staff sent a signed card and it was heartfelt. Their staff gets to know you and your pets, and I like that many of them have worked there for so long.

Dr. Krabel is good at discussing options and costs and likely results, so you can try to make informed decisions in balancing medical procedures and tests versus the quality of life for your pet along with expenses.

I take my two current kitties to see him and wouldn’t go anywhere else. Sometimes it just depends on the vet you see at a clinic, but I’ve had appointments with two other vets there and they were also very good.

I’ve also taken my cat to the Animal Clinic on Roxbury. We haven’t been there in a couple years and the only ‘major’ issues we’ve dealt with were an abscess under her chin from scratching and ear mites. From my interactions with him, Dr. De Guzman seems to have quiet reserved manner and is willing to listen to your concerns.

We have taken our cats to Dr. Shaffer at the Admiral Veterinary Hospital (2231 California – 937-4940) for 20+ years and he is wonderful with them. We’ve had two with hyper-thyroidism and he recommended two different courses of treatment – one had one of her thyroids (cats have 2)surgically removed and did very well, the other had radiation and went on to live another 5 years. Dr. Shaffer and the women on his staff have shown us the utmost compassion and caring when the time came for our furry children to go to “kitty-heaven”.

VCA West Seattle Veterinary Hospital (on California just south of the Alaska Junction) is the best I’ve ever gone to, and I’ve gone through half-a-dozen vets with a very special-needs cat. Their prices and quality of care are both top-notch.

All their vets are good, but I’ve mostly dealt with Dr. Waterhouse and Dr. Plosky, both of whom are incredible.

STRONGLY recommend AGAINST Greentree. I went there recently for the first time – the experience was exceptionally negative for both me and my pooch!

I like Dr Shaffer at Admiral Vet. One cat had hyper-thyroid, he discussed all the options, and I decided to get the injection treatment at the all cat place on Aurora in Shoreline. He doesn’t hesitate to refer if there may be an option for treatment, but also will mention more budget conscious alternatives.

The biggest problem with the radiation injection was waiting for the cat litter to “cool down” for six months for disposal.

Very kind when the time to say goodbye comes.

Just an add-on to SophieLola’s “comment” about Greentree…his/her ‘rant’ was also listed in this thread: https://westseattleblog.com/blog/forum/topic.php?id=3651

SophieLola – Just saying it was a ‘bad experience’ isn’t much of a review when no other details are provided.

Thank you alki_2008. You write with a very level head. But I have to speak out and not be so level.

Dr. McKim and his staff compassionately helped me and my beloved kitty through a very rough time last September. I’d been with him and his staff for 15 years because they ARE caring people. When I had to put my beloved kitty Venus down they couldn’t have been more compassionate and sensitive. I will always love them for that.

I can’t stand by and not say something when people are disrespecting Dr. McKim.

    Aim,

I am not a cat person.

This thread has been resurrected since your last post in this thread eight months ago.

Since you were happy with your vet, I suggest you continue with your vet. Driving from West Seattle to Redmond and back is a small price to pay.

I’d like to add my recommendation for Dr. Shaffer at Admiral. His bedside manner with cats is wonderful (he regularly nuzzles and kisses my kitties). Although I’m new to the area, I tried a sampling of local vets, since two cats I adopted had a horrible respiratory illness. I lost one thru the incompetence of an emergency animal clinic (who didn’t give subq fluid injections). When I finally found Dr. Shaffer, he saved the other kitten and taught me how to care for her at home.

He has a really common sense approach to animal care. His philosophy is that sick animals recover better at home (if at all possible). I like this and agree with it. He’s very good about demystifying how to care for sick animals and also tells you when and how to decide if the cat should be hospitalized at their or another facility.

All of this and you never have to wait when you have an appointment, the prices are reasonable, and the staff is caring and warm!

I tried out a total of 4 vets before I found this office. How nice to find a place where my kitties are cared for!
