West Seattle, Washington
07 Monday
It’s a beautiful night to get out and see art … and artists! … from the fall West Seattle Art Walk list:
FRANCES SMERSH AT CLICK! DESIGN THAT FITS: “With a Little Help from My Friends” is the painting exhibition featured tonight at Click!, created by the shop’s co-proprietor Frances Smersh, photographed with friend and fellow artist Michelle Ting. As noted this week on the shop’s blog, this is Frances’s fourth year living with younger-onset Alzheimer’s, and while she has to rely more on family and friends for everyday assistance, she continues to shine with creative expression, including this work. Stop by before 8 tonight at 4540 California SW.
Also, two stops toward the south end:
BONNIE KATZ SAILORS @ MITSUI GROUP: Did you know that Fitness Together-West Seattle proprietor Bonnie Katz Sailors is also a visual artist? She’s featured tonight at Mitsui Real Estate Group until 8 pm (6021 California SW). Bonnie’s show “Postcards from Washington” is centered on her oil-painting landscapes.
MEGAN SIMMONS @ VISCON CELLARS: Stop in for wine – tasting fees are waived for those out on the Art Walk – at Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW) before 9 pm and meet Megan while admiring her paintings.
3 businesses mentioned above – Viscon Cellars, Click! Design That Fits, Fitness Together-West Seattle – are WSB sponsors.
The cover image for the map/postcard promoting this quarter’s West Seattle Art Walk events – starting with tomorrow night’s WSAW – always has a backstory. This time around, there’s a lot to tell.
The image is a painting by Frances Smersh, the West Seattle artist who is co-proprietor of Junction shop Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) with her husband John Smersh. She is also this month’s featured WSAW artist there, so you can visit Frances and her work there Thursday night (October 11th) 5-8 pm.
In conjunction with the showcase, Click! has an update for the community about the personal news they first shared three years ago – that Frances is living with younger-onset Alzheimer’s Disease.
Writing on the Click! blog this week, they explain that the disease has continued to progress. “This last year Frances has struggled with more challenges that the disease has presented, and found that art is an area that she can still thrive. … With painting as her primary focus for most of the last year, she’s produced an impressive body of work!”
You can see the show during tomorrow’s Art Walk. The update continues, “She has titled her show ‘With a Little Help from my Friends,’ an acknowledgement of the extra assistance she now needs.”
After details on how Frances is doing now, the update explain how that assistance is more vital than ever:
If you or someone you know would enjoy spending time or sharing a meal with (or providing a meal for) Frances, please reach out to John and let him know what you would be up for. She loves being with people and is pretty game for most activities. Friends have started a GoFundMe page in hopes of helping with some of the extra expenses they now face; donations of any amount are hugely appreciated.
Read the full update here. And go see Frances’s show at Click! on Thursday night, 4540 California SW, 5-8 pm.
7:03 PM: Toast the end of summer by visiting the Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor) tasting room during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – not only can you have a glass of wine, you can also admire Debbie Bianchi‘s paintings. The tasting room will be open until 9 pm. You can also wander through The Junction, where WSAW venues include Click! Design That Fits (4540 California SW; WSB sponsor):
Erik Railton is there, showing paintings. He describes his recent work as “based on nature being made into geometric shapes and colors.” Read more about it here.
9:04 PM: We made one more stop:
That’s Michelle Salazar with work from her show “Last Dance” at Wallflower Custom Framing (4735 42nd SW; WSB sponsor). If you missed getting out on the Art Walk tonight, you can still enjoy most of the displays all month long during participating venues‘ regular business hours!
BIG day/night ahead! First, West Seattle Summer Fest Eve, with street closures in The Junction starting as soon as 4 pm, so festival setup can begin. It’s also become a fun night for locals to wander – and this time, there’s more than ever.

BUBBLEMAN: The popular performer will be at California/Alaska starting at 6:30 pm.

The night before West Seattle Summer Fest – this year, that’s Thursday, July 12th – has evolved into a street party all its own, and this year it’s getting bigger. Here’s one way: As usual, it’s also West Seattle Art Walk night, and this year along with the ongoing venues, there’ll be art in – and on – the streets! If you’re an artist, you’re invited to apply to be part of it. Here’s the announcement:
We are looking for artists to take it to the streets and create chalk art for our July 12th edition of the West Seattle Art Walk. We’ll be closing down the street in preparation for Summer Fest, the biggest party of the year! We’ll provide the chalk, the space, and promotion on social media; you will provide your artistic talent. Artists will be drawing on the streets from 6-8 pm.
We will select up to eight artists and close submissions on July 6th with jury-selected artists notified on July 9th. If selected, you may bring up to five original pieces of your art as well as your business cards to display next to your work.
HOW TO APPLY: Email wsartwalk@gmail.com with your name, website, two JPEGs of your work and primary social media handle.
Stay tuned for more details of Summer Fest Eve – as well as the festival itself!

Remember that food and beverage venues are on the list too, some with specials you can enjoy while out on the Art Walk. More to come!
7:51 PM: On the other side of the street, we stopped by CAPERS (4525 California SW), which is spotlighting painter Magdalena Cooney:

As we mentioned in today’s daily preview – where you’ll also find the venue map/list of every venue participating tonight – George’s work is also on this quarter’s official Art Walk poster. Stop by and say hi sometime in the next few hours!
7:20 PM: Another highlight tonight – student work at ArtsWest. It includes students from Chief Sealth International High School and West Seattle High School; we found two WSHS students when we stopped by:
Above, Quinn Fitzgerald; below, Arwen Blazier.
The students’ work, comprising an exhibit titled Visual Narratives, will be up at ArtsWest through this weekend.
You’ll soon see that poster around West Seattle – it’s the official poster for the West Seattle Art Walk first-quarter dates (first Thursdays as usual – January 11, February 8, March 8), featuring art by George Perrou. Every quarter, there’s also a venue map/list, of retailers, galleries, restaurants, etc. that agree to be open late that night while hosting an artist and/or offering food/drink specials to make it a more-memorable night for folks out exploring West Seattle. Wherever you are on the peninsula, there’s still time to get on that list for the first-quarter Art Walk nights if you do it here no later than New Year’s Eve (Sunday)!

It’s also part of the West Seattle Art Walk, and Sea-Town RE will be featuring artist Ben Calhoun. 5-9 pm Thursday (November 9th), you’re invited to stop in for beverages, snacks, art, and merriment. Sea-Town founder/owner Christian Harris (right) explains, “Along with having recently added the very visible white Sea-Town RE sign hanging off the side of our building over California Avenue, we have installed an interactive touch-screen display in our front window, highlighting the latest WS homes for sale, where passers-by can also perform their own home searches and inquiries.” You can see, and read about, the display by going here. Technology is a hallmark of Harris’s independent firm and his efforts “to provide a better experience for both his clients and his agents” – that includes other ways in which he works with the community, including producing and anchoring The Sea-Town Podcast, in which, he explains, he “interviews local business owners, entrepreneurs and community leaders to help tell their stories and spread the word about these great businesses and non-profits.” (We’re among the dozens of people who have been guests so far.)
Come join the party at Sea-Town Real Estate’s new digs on Thursday night, at 2701 California SW.

If you have ever wanted to try painting with oil paints, now is your chance. You will have the opportunity to paint on a 6” x 6” piece of canvas with help and direction.
The subject matter is anything related to wine. There will be some images available to choose from, bring your own or just come paint the colors in abstract form or design. The goal is to get enough 6”x6” “wine” paintings so we can combine them all together into a large mosaic piece of artwork to commemorate the evening.
Art Walk starts at 5 pm and continues “until late,” depending on the venue – go explore, find out about West Seattle businesses you might not have visited before, and have fun!

We’re seeking artists for the upcoming Q4 Art Walk:
The West Seattle Arts Council is currently seeking artists to submit their work for the upcoming Q4 (Oct/Nov/Dec) digital and printed Art Walk promotional materials. This includes the printed walking map postcards and posters that will be displayed around West Seattle.
This is a great opportunity for artists to have their work prominently featured and promoted in our community! Please submit your work through (this) link. The deadline to submit is Thursday, August 17th.
To find out more about the West Seattle Art Walk, visit the website.
The West Seattle art walk is a monthly art event that is held the second Thursday of each month 5pm to late year-round. The art walk is hosted by the local West Seattle merchants who feature a wide range of art and showcase our vibrant artist community.
Thanks! We look forward to reviewing the submissions!
And even if you’re not an artist – here’s another way to get involved:
Are you interested in learning more about the Arts Council and West Seattle Art Walk? Our committee meetings are always open to anyone who would like to get involved promoting arts in West Seattle. Our next meeting will be held on Friday, August 18th 9 am at Uptown Espresso (Edmunds/California). We would welcome the community spirit of adding more art here in West Seattle.
6:40 PM: Love to relax with a book and a glass of wine? Stop by Viscon Cellars (WSB sponsor) during tonight’s West Seattle Art Walk – on right now – and talk with Jessica Trouillaud about her business Words & Wine – which will set you up with both. Viscon Cellars is at 5910 California SW and open every Art Walk night until 8 pm – it’s our first stop tonight. Here’s the venue list, both for art and for food/drink specials along the route:
6:58 PM: We’re in The Junction now – where at least one Art Walk artist is in the Summer Fest Eve spirit:
Gwenevere Ferguson is showing her digital and acrylic art outside Merryweather Books, on the west side of the street between Alaska and Oregon. On the other side of California, same block, Click! Design That Fits (WSB sponsor) is featuring Fritz Rud and his Ampliphones again this month:
Beautiful night to get out, not just for the art, but also for Summer Fest Eve.
8:46 PM: We also stopped by Virago Gallery (on SW Alaska next to Easy Street):
(“XOXO My love is very special” by Brianna McCarthy)
The exhibit “Matters of Inheritance” by Brianna McCarthy continues, and on August 5th, you can meet the artist, who Virago proprietor Tracy Cilona tells us is coming from Trinidad for the occasion. The 5-9 pm event also will include readings by writers responding to the exhibit.
(Like Virago, most of tonight’s Art Walk stops will continue showing their featured artist’s work through the coming month, so if you missed tonight – or didn’t make it to all the stops – you can check it out in the days and weeks to come.)
It’s almost here – the magical Thursday night when you’ll want to come wander The Junction for West Seattle Art Walk – which happens on second Thursdays, year-round – and Summer Fest Eve, which happens just once a year. The streets close at 6 pm Thursday (California from Genesee to Edmunds, except for west-east access on Oregon, and Alaska between 42nd and 44th) for festival setup and the party starts early. Above is the walking map and list for Art Walk venues, where you’ll find art and/or food and drink deals; also, as already announced, special entertainment includes:
*Bubbleman at Walk All Ways (California/Alaska), 7-8 pm
*Big Band Blue outside West 5 (4539 California), 7-9 pm
*Shabazz Palaces in-store at Easy Street Records (California/Alaska), 7 pm
*Live music at Virago Gallery (just west of Easy Street)
More info on the Art Walk/Summer Fest Eve highlights is here.
Plus: Take some time to head south of The Junction to Viscon Cellars (5910 California SW; WSB sponsor) as a trio of Texans teams up for a special night starting at 5 pm – winemaker Ben Viscon, artist Lindsay Peyton, and Words & Wine entrepreneur Jessica Trouillaud.
