11:48 AM: The rainshower’s over on Puget Ridge and spectators continue wandering the 11th annual West Seattle Car Show on the north side of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus! Show admission is free and you can get lunch for only $5:

The Kiwanis Club of West Seattle is grilling burgers and hot dogs this year – you can get one with chips and water for only $5. That’s also what you’ll pay for tasting (five tastes, we hear) inside the Northwest Wine Academy, adjacent to the show zone:

Free kids’ activities inside, too. Back to the cars – bright colors under the gray skies!

West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) are co-presenting the show this year, and proceeds are supporting SSC’s Automotive Technology program (which you can tour while you’re here) – you can help by buying 50/50 Raffle tickets ($1 each or 25 for $20) at the show tent on the east side of the lot – T-shirts for sale too, plus that’s where you can cast a vote for the People’s Choice Award. (Trophies get handed out starting at 2, so get here by then!)

Now that it’s safe to go outside again … we can resume getting excited about this weekend’s big outdoor events! Saturday includes the 2018 West Seattle Car Show – if you have a vehicle to show off, it’s not too late to be part of the show, via day-of entry (registration info’s here), with load-in starting at 8 am. If you just want to wander, show hours (free admission!) are 10 am-3 pm, with the chance to eat and drink while you’re there – the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle will be grilling hamburgers and hot dogs, and the Northwest Wine Academy will be open, with beverages including wine and coffee. You’re also invited to visit the adjacent Seattle Chinese Garden. It’s all happening Saturday (August 25th) on the north side of South Seattle College, whose Automotive Tech program benefits from proceeds of the show presented by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) – see you there!

Still a lot of summer left – with big events ahead, including the 2018 West Seattle Car Show, presented again this year by West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (both WSB sponsors). It’s happening 10 am-3 pm Saturday, August 25th, in the huge lot on the north side of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus. If you have a vehicle to show off, pre-registration is closed but you’re welcome to show up starting at 8 am on show day and sign up on the spot (info’s here). For visitors, admission is free and this year will include:

*City-presented Don’t Drip and Drive inspections

*SSC Automotive Technology students (whose program is supported by show proceeds) will be doing bulb safety checks

*West Seattle Kiwanis will be barbecuing hamburgers and hot dogs you can buy for lunch

UPDATE: House-fire callout on Puget Ridge

9:56 PM: Seattle Fire now has a house-fire callout in the 5400 block of 18th SW. Updates to come.

9:59 PM: The incident log shows most of the originally dispatched units have been dismissed. We’re still heading over to see what we can find out.

10:30 PM: This is the second time in a little over three weeks that SFD has been called to 5431 18th SW – here’s our coverage of the July 19th call. As described last time, the house is in rundown condition, and an alleged squatter is living there. The damage/cause in this incident is still being evaluated – the SFD investigator is on scene, as are police, but we do know the fire’s out and no oe was hurt.

ADDED MONDAY: SFD says the cause was ruled “accidental” and since the house is vacant, there’s no dollar amount estimate for the damage done.

Back in June, we covered Seattle Parks visiting Puget Ridge to show the draft plan for overhauling the neighborhood playground. Now, with the feedback gathered during that meeting and a gathering in April, there’s a “preferred design” – you can see it above (or here). The announcement explains that it is “based on the public input, accessible standards, other park design standards, and budget limitations. The intent of the preferred design is to maintain the bones of the existing park, include new play structures that are accessible to all abilities – focused on young kids, and improve seating and gathering.” Got feedback? Parks will take comments until August 13th – email project planner Libby Hubson at libby.hudson@seattle.gov. The project team told us in June they hope to start work this fall on the overhaul, budgeted at $300,000.

Looking for a new career direction – or know someone who is? South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) on Puget Ridge is about to launch a new degree program. Here’s the announcement:

South Seattle College is offering an Associate of Applied Science degree in Network Security Administration starting this fall quarter, with classes beginning Sept. 24. The two-year program, designed for working adults, prepares students for immediate employment in information security, with the option to transfer to a bachelor’s degree program for further study.

Network security professionals play a key role in the development of network security systems and protocols to protect vulnerable digital infrastructure. SSC’s Network Security Administration program provides the technical skills and practical knowledge needed for students who plan to enter the information security field.

Program highlights:

· Designed in collaboration with cybersecurity experts from Microsoft and Amazon

· Classes are held in the evenings, on weekends and online to accommodate working adults

· Fast track to completion: prior industry certifications can count towards degree completion

The Bureau of Labor Statistics projects a 56 percent increase in IT security job opportunities in the computer systems design and related services industry by 2026. With a degree in Network Security Administration, students have the opportunity to enter a variety of career fields including network administration, computer network defense and technical support.

About the police response on Puget Ridge

We’ve received several questions about a police response on Puget Ridge, west of South Seattle College (WSB sponsor). There was briefly a report of a missing child. The child is reported to have been found and is safe. There was a report that the child had possibly been seen walking with someone he didn’t know and so police have been looking for that person. That’s all we know at this point but will check back with police later.

8:20 PM: Seattle Fire has sent a “full response” to what’s described as a vacant structure in the 5400 block of 18th SW [map]. First arrivals report light smoke.

8:32 PM: Some of the responding units are being dismissed.

8:52 PM: Talked to SFD at the scene. They say the fire was in a box of items inside the house. Not a big fire but the house was already in “dilapidated” shape so it looks worse than it was. The rest of the SFD units are now being dismissed.

9:04 AM: Big Seattle Fire response for a natural-gas leak at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) on Puget Ridge. Per scanner, it’s related to construction work and it’s toward the north side of campus. Puget Sound Energy is reported to be on scene too. We’re on our way to find out more.

9:09 AM: The response is being downsized.

9:20 AM: Our crew just arrived. The gas-line break is just north of the clock tower on campus. SSC buildings remain evacuated until PSE and SFD determine everything is OK – no estimate yet how long that’ll be.

9:54 AM: We just went back to check; SFD has cleared and people have been allowed back into the SCC buildings.

HAPPENING NOW: Ham-radio operators invite you to ‘get on the air’ as Field Day 2018 continues into the night

That’s part of the setup on the south end of the South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) campus for Field Day, the amateur-radio operators’ event described as “part drill, part contest, part show-and-tell.” The latter is where you come in. You’re invited to visit any time before it ends at 10 am tomorrow – the “Get On The Air” tent (that beige one in our photo) will be happy to set you up with a licensed mentor so you can take a turn. We listened in for a bit:

Field Day involves thousands of other operators, mostly in North America, and so far, as of our visit this afternoon, the hams here had made contacts as far away as Pennsylvania and San Diego – every new contact means a point for the competition, as well as every new means of contact (they’re even using Morse Code in one part of the field). By the way – Field Day will remind you that amateur radio is for all ages:

Those participating include members of the West Seattle Amateur Radio Club:

Also part of Field Day, members of the Puget Sound Repeater Group and the Seattle Auxiliary Communications Service. Related in particular to that last group, another thing that’s potentially of interest – the solar-power setups, as this event is completely off the grid; in case of disaster, hams are ready to be a key part of the communication network, and many regularly train for that. Again, you’re welcome to visit – if you’re driving or riding, enter SSC via the south entrance, and head to the southeasternmost edge of the southern lot – you’ll see the tents and antennas.

Registration is now open for the 11th annual West Seattle Car Show – and we have some details you might be interested in even if you don’t plan to show off a vehicle.

West Seattle Autoworks and Swedish Automotive (WSB sponsors) are presenting the show again this year. It’s set for 10 am-3 pm Saturday, August 25th, in the big north lot at South Seattle College (also a WSB sponsor), whose automotive program benefits from the proceeds.

To register – download a form here. Organizers have made some changes to the categories and other registration details so judging will go more smoothly. Also new: “A call for car clubs to pre-register — if we get a minimum of 5 vehicles pre-registered from any one club, we will provide a trophy specific to the club!” (Register by July 31st to get in on that.)

Puget Ridge playground overhaul: Here’s the plan

This 21-year-old playground on Puget Ridge, known as the “tot lot,” is getting an overhaul. Community members were invited to stop by this week for a look at the plan.

It’s mostly keeping the same footprint:

But the surface will be leveled so it’s accessible to more users; a trail around the playground is getting some attention too, and of course the play equipment will be replaced. A forest theme was most popular with participants in a previous meeting, so that’s the type of equipment that’ll be provided – some examples were shown:

Among those who stopped by in last Wednesday afternoon’s sunshine to find out about the plan were some present and future users, who even had their own version of the public meeting staple known as a sign-in sheet:

VIDEO: Governor, County Executive visit South Seattle College to tout new study aimed at convincing Boeing to design, build new ‘mid-market’ plane in our state

The Aviation Maintenance Technology program’s hangar at South Seattle College (WSB sponsor) hosted a high-profile event today: Governor Jay Inslee and County Executive Dow Constantine were among the speakers at the presentation of a study about aerospace-manufacturing competitiveness. The study showed, the governor said our state is “the best place to make a new mid-market airplane.” That’s a reference to Boeing‘s impending decision on whether – and where – to design and build just such a plane, and the study is part of an effort to convince the company to do it in Washington. Our state’s advantages for the industry have been long known, Inslee added, but now a study proves it. The industry is worth $76 billion to our state’s economy, he noted, and as a result has an “aerospace-friendly ecosystem.” Here’s the study announcement; here’s the full report (PDF). Executive Constantine said SSC – which he described as “West Seattle’s own university” – was a great place for the announcement because of its role in training the next generation of workers for the industry. “We are working to preserve aerospace jobs and strengthen the state’s entire supply chain,” he declared. He and Inslee are both members of the state’s council leading a “multi-pronged, broad-based, statewide campaign to demonstrate Washington’s position as the site with the lowest risk and highest return on Boeing’s potential investment to design, produce, and assemble the new airplane.”

Seattle Colleges’ Chancellor Shouan Pan announced Dr. Rosie Rimando-Chareunsap will serve as the next president of South Seattle College (SSC), effective July 1, 2018. Dr. Pan’s decision came after a nationwide search and consideration of feedback from multiple sources.

Rimando-Chareunsap has been with SSC since 2000 and currently serves as vice president of student services. She will succeed Interim President Peter Lortz and Gary Oertli, who retired as SSC’s most recent president in August of 2017.

“Dr. Rimando-Chareunsap is uniquely prepared and qualified to lead South Seattle College,” Chancellor Pan said. “The college has a proud history and the collective power to overcome future challenges and seize new opportunities. Rosie’s commitment to SSC and student success, her passion for equity-minded leadership, and her sensitivity to people and attentiveness to the task position her well to lead SSC at this time.”

With a B.A. in English and Ethnic Studies from Washington State University and an M.A. of Public Administration from University of Washington, Rimando-Chareunsap earned her Doctor of Education in Higher Education Administration from WSU. Her roles at SSC have included director of student outreach, associate dean of student achievement and vice president of student services.

Beyond SSC, Rimando-Chareunsap serves on the Executive Committee of the Washington State Student Services Commission, White Center Community Development Association Board, and the Seattle University Student Development Administration Advisory Board. In addition, she serves as Secretary of the National Asian Pacific Islander Council of the American Association of Community Colleges.

“I am honored and humbled to take on this leadership role for South Seattle College, especially after 18 years as a member of this community of dedicated and passionate educators,” Rimando-Chareunsap said. “I look forward to serving our students, communities, and city from this position, and helping SSC be at the forefront of transforming the lives of our diverse neighbors.”

Dr. Rimando-Chareunsap was one of three finalists for the job. SSC is headquartered on West Seattle’s Puget Ridge and also has a Georgetown campus.

FOLLOWUP: Where South Seattle College’s Pastry and Baking Arts program stands

A little over a month after students, faculty, and community members pleaded with the interim president of South Seattle College< (WSB sponsor) not to kill the Pastry and Baking Arts program, Peter Lortz has made a decision. The college’s communications director Ty Swenson says Lortz “is not forwarding a recommendation of program closure until more is learned from conversations with industry and further discussion with faculty.” Those conversations, he explains, emerged from “connect(ing) with those who expressed a willingness to support the program … a plan emerged for Seattle Colleges to meet with baking industry representatives to discuss how the district (this includes South Seattle College, Seattle Central College and North Seattle College) can best meet industry needs and student demand. Those meetings will be held in the near future.” In the meantime, though, Swenson adds, “South will not run Pastry & Baking Arts classes during Summer Quarter 2018 and is not currently accepting new students into the program for Fall Quarter 2018.”

Closure was recommended by the college’s vice president of instruction in the face of a college budget crunch, but before forwarding that recommendation to the district chancellor, Lortz convened a “listening session” that filled the school’s board room with supporters including prominent bakers/restaurateurs who said the program is an invaluable training ground for businesses like theirs.

ROAD-WORK ALERTS: Two closures ahead – 18th/Myrtle, 35th/104th

Two SDOT updates on local projects bring news of closures ahead:

18TH/MYRTLE: On Puget Ridge, the project near Sanislo Elementary continues, with an unanticipated closure in a week:

This week, our crews continued work at SW Orchard St, 18th Ave SW, and SW Myrtle St. We worked with Seattle Public Utilities to relocate a fire hydrant and worked with Seattle City Light to relocate light poles along SW Orchard St. We were also able to pour concrete to complete more sidewalks and curb corners. Our crews worked on adjusting driveway thresholds along SW Orchard St.

During our earlier excavation work, we discovered the roadbed under the intersection of SW Myrtle St and 18th Ave SW was in worse shape than we had expected. Because of this unforeseen circumstance, our crews will have to completely demolish and reconstruct the intersection. We are scheduled to do this work on Saturday, May 19 – this work will require full closure of the intersection of SW Myrtle St and 18th Ave SW. Our crews will begin work as early as 7:00 am as we hope to complete this work by Sunday morning to minimize impact to school related traffic. Detours will be in place during this work. The newly paved intersection will have a smaller traffic circle footprint to widen the street around it and allow for larger vehicles more space for turning movements.

Then later this month, the start date is set for the long-planned closure for drainage work related to the Arbor Heights sidewalk project:

35TH/104TH: SDOT also sent an update about the Arbor Heights sidewalk project:

We will be starting construction work on 35th Ave SW between SW 100th St and SW 106th St on the week of May 21. Our crews may begin moving construction equipment into the area and begin preparation work as early as late next week. We will begin full closure of 35th Ave SW between SW 104th St and SW 106th St on Tuesday, May 29. This closure will last through mid to late June for our crews to replace the stormwater drainage and detention system underground. Detours and reroutes for access to Arbor Heights Elementary and Westside School have identified. A map will be available and included in next week’s update.

5:20 PM: In case you’re wondering about the police search in central Delridge, with a K-9 team joining officers in the Delridge/Myrtle vicinity, as well as points east and uphill toward Puget Ridge, here’s what we have found out so far: This started with one man punching another in the face near Home Depot. The victim was taken to the hospital by private ambulance. The suspect is known to the victim. No luck finding him yet.

An alert from SDOT late today that the 18th/Orchard closure on Puget Ridge as part of the Sanislo Elementary Safe Routes to School project will continue through and beyond the weekend:

This week, our crews have started demolition and grading work on the roadway along SW Orchard St in preparation for curb construction. We also completed storm drain installation in this stretch of the project site. Because our crews are moving quicker than anticipated, we took advantage of the nice weather this week and began paving the area. This work required a full closure at the intersection of SW Orchard St and 18th Ave SW. The closure was effective as of this past Wednesday, 4/25 and will remain in place 24/7 until next Friday, 5/4. We had envisioned that we may be able to keep one lane northbound open for drivers to access SW Myrtle St, however, we learned that it would not be wide enough for cars to get through safely and thus require full closure of the intersection.

Our crews have placed street closure and detour signs to provide drivers advance notice of the intersection closure and detour. Our detour for travelers going eastbound on SW Orchard St is down Dumar Way SW and then north onto 16th Ave SW. We have a “Street Closed, Local Access Only” sign at SW Orchard St as it splits into Dumar Way SW to inform drivers that it is for residents access only. We also added reflective barrels and blinking lights at SW Orchard St and 18th Ave SW to help light up the street closure and detour signs. We hope this will help drivers better and more safely navigate around the intersection.

Got stuff you haven’t been able to recycle, and aren’t planning to sell on West Seattle Community Garage Sale Day (or some other time)? Here’s a great way to make good use of it. From Rebecca Evans:

Sanislo Elementary is holding a BIG neighborhood collection/donation drive this weekend on Saturday, April 28th from 8 am-2 pm at 1812 SW Myrtle Street.

With spring here, we’re sure many neighbors have a pile of donation items cluttering up space. We will be collecting clothes, shoes, linens and most other household items in front of the school. We hope to have donations from the community at large so please spread the word to your friends and neighbors. We will fill up a truck as much as we can and haul it over to Value Village, where they will pay us by the pound for the items. ALL proceeds of the payout will be going right back into programs at the school for our students and families.

Stop on by anytime between 8 am-2 pm and pull into the loop driveway or parking lot. We will help unload your goods and you can be on your way! Thank you for your support of your local community schools!

West Seattle weekend scene: Getting greens in the ground at Puget Ridge Edible Park

The weekend weather improved just in time for one of the last spotlight events of the day – this afternoon’s planting party at Puget Ridge Edible Park (18th/Brandon – map).

Stu Hennessey (above center, standing) and other community members pitched the plan to Seattle Parks 8+ years ago, and the city bought the site with levy money. We reported on the site’s history back in 2011.

Today, volunteers were planting lettuce today; other greens planted earlier in the year are coming in. You can get involved both with tending PREP and sharing in the harvest – monthly work parties are always the second Sunday this time of year, 4-6 pm, so the next one is Sunday, May 13th – bring tools and seeds if you have them!
