West Seattle, Washington
20 Wednesday
A week and a half ago, we published the West Seattle High School Senior Class ASB‘s open call for a restaurant to partner on a dine-out fundraiser, since the students’ usual fundraising methods aren’t doable this year. They didn’t just get one partner – they got 10! Now it’s your turn to help, and October 21st is the date. From class president Ella Richardson:
The West Seattle High School Senior Class is extremely grateful to have received numerous offers from restaurants willing to host our fundraiser. We will be hosting a Dine Out day on Wednesday October 21. Support your local restaurants and the Senior class by dining in or taking out at any of the following restaurants:
Circa (2605 California SW)
Bebop Waffle Shop (2600 California SW)
Arthur’s (2311 California SW)
Mission Cantina (2325 California SW)
Admiral Pub (2306 California SW)
Ampersand Café (2536 Alki SW)
Lady Jaye (4523 California SW)
Peel and Press (6503 California SW)
The Westy (7908 35th SW)
Dream Dinners* (4701 41st SW)All of these restaurants will be donating a percentage of their profits from that day to the West Seattle HS Seniors, who will put that money toward their prom. During dinner time we will be selling raffle tickets to win local prizes. At Lady Jaye there will be a live COVID-friendly performance by the band Aurora Avenue from 4-4:45 pm. The Senior class needs the West Seattle Community to please show up and support!
*Note: Dream Dinners is unique! We are not a restaurant but we do make amazing dinners! Best of all we are committed to giving back to our community! Please place your meal order on or before October 20th, for pick up on the 22nd using this link.

West Seattleite Stephanie Gerding was in for the fight of her life after two strokes in the middle of the night sent her to the hospital.
While there, she says in this online profile, she wondered if her life was about to end, too soon – until her husband put a photo of their 10-year-old daughter at her bedside. “That was the moment I knew not fighting for my life, not being there as her mom, was not an option. This was not the end for me.”
That was three years ago. But stroke recovery is not the same as simply getting over an illness: “I wish doctors told us recovery is a lifelong journey so we would have a more inclusive and optimistic outlook.” Nonetheless, she sets goals – and one of those was to be in the Puget Sound Heart and Stroke Walk, raising money for the American Heart Association. Last year was her first one. This year, it’s happening virtually, culminating this Saturday, and she’s participating again. Her husband Patrick Gerding wanted us to know, describing his wife as “a local hero.” You can support her, or participate yourself. As Stephanie describes it, it’s a matter of investing “in hope for a future with fewer strokes.”
P.S. Knowing the symptoms of stroke can save your life or that of someone you love.
Sunday brunch without leaving home, this weekend! Here’s the announcement:
The Delridge Neighborhoods Development Association will present its first ever Cabin Fever Brunch Bash, a virtual fundraising event, on Sunday, October 11 featuring remarks from Congresswoman Pramila Jayapal, music by Clinton Fearon, live art, poetry, and more.
The Cabin Fever Brunch Bash will bring the work of local artists directly to viewers. Brunch options prepared by Chef Mulu Abate of Phresh Eats will be available for delivery or pickup to brunch ticket holders in advance of the event, with gluten- and dairy-free options available for all menu items. Hosted by DNDA’s Executive Director David Bestock, the event allows virtual attendees to experience DNDA’s work, and enjoy sweet music vibes from Clinton Fearon and Daniel Pak, live art by Sophia Trinh, poetry from Jordan Chaney, fun videos, and more, while supporting DNDA’s programs in southwest Seattle.
General admission tickets are $10. Buy before October 7 [today!] to get a single brunch ticket for $125, or brunch for two for $200. Brunch items will be delivered the day before the event, or can be made available for pickup. For tickets and donations, please visit https://dnda.ejoinme.org/brunch.
DNDA has been leading a vision for a vibrant and thriving Delridge since 1996, and was honored as Nonprofit of the Year by the West Seattle Chamber of Commerce. We work to integrate art, nature, and neighborhood to build and sustain a dynamic Delridge. Support DNDA as we support youth and families, and together we will write a brighter future for us all.

The orcas are here because the salmon are here. Only a few salmon-spawning creeks remain in the city, and one of them will be under volunteer observation again this fall. Want to help? Here’s the announcement from Judy Pickens of the Fauntleroy Watershed Council:
If you’d like to experience coho spawners up close, consider joining Salmon Watch 2020 on Fauntleroy Creek starting Monday, October 19. Individuals and family groups may sign up to watch near the fish ladder (across from the ferry terminal) during the five daylight hours after high tide. A veteran watcher will provide training during your first shift.
This all-outdoor activity is well suited to physical distancing but you’ll need to have a mask at the ready. To learn why West Seattleites eagerly get wet and cold to document fish, contact Judy Pickens at judy_pickens@msn.com.
Here’s Judy’s wrapup report from last year, when 19 spawners were counted.
The photo and announcement are from Pack 799 dad Jason T:
Today and through this weekend, individual Cub Scouts and their parents will be putting out door hangers in the Arbor Heights neighborhood and a few other neighborhoods around West Seattle (depending where they live, optional participation), and individual families will return on Saturday, October 10, 9 am to 12 pm to retrieve any nonperishable items, bagged, from the locations where they distributed hangers. Families will deliver these bags to the West Seattle Food Bank. If you see one of these hangers on your door, please consider helping us out with our service activity by donating. See the following link for items the West Seattle Food bank currently accepts:
westseattlefoodbank.org/donate-food
Performing this activity as individual families is one way the Pack is adopting COVID-19 appropriate approaches for our community service activities. And with food insecurity on the rise, dens feel it is more important than ever to assist in small ways.
(2019 CROP Hunger Walk, photographed by Ben Acker)
Thanks to Judy Pickens for the announcement:
Fauntleroy Church is taking the lead in organizing West Seattle’s annual CROP Hunger Walk, with a goal of raising $5,000 in a health-conscious way.
During the week of Octpber 4 -11, individuals and household groups across the country will be walking routes of their own choosing to raise millions of dollars to alleviate hunger at home and around the globe. Twenty five percent of funds raised in Seattle will be divided equally among West Seattle Food Bank/Helpline, White Center Food Bank, North Helpline, and Food Lifeline.
Donate and register to walk at www.crophungerwalk.org/seattlewa/FauntleroyUCC.
Even as they fight to stay afloat in the pandemic economy, local businesses have continued to give back to the community. The West Seattle High School ASB is hoping to find one that can answer their call, and asked us to publish it:
Dear West Seattle community,
The West Seattle High School Senior class ASB is looking for a restaurant’s help in fundraising for the school year. Usually, the Senior class hosts an annual Homecoming dance; however, because of Covid-19, hosting an in-person dance is not an option. This means that the Senior class is losing out on thousands of dollars from ticket sales that would fund the majority of our prom. In an effort to stay financially on track with being able to afford the cost of a Senior prom at the end of the school year, we are searching for a restaurant who would be willing to host a restaurant fundraiser.
The fundraiser would be a one-day “takeover” where we encourage our large community of staff, hundreds of students, and families to dine in your restaurant or order takeout and a portion of the sales would be donated back to the Senior class. Some benefits restaurants would receive from hosting this fundraiser include a tax write-off, good publicity, and an increase in foot traffic to their business.
We chose to take this route instead of directly calling restaurants because we did not want owners to feel pressured to help us when they might be experiencing financial troubles due to the pandemic. If you are a restaurant that is interested in hosting our restaurant takeover. please contact Senior Class President Ella Richardson at wshsco2021@gmail.com .
West Seattle High School ASB hopes everyone is staying safe and healthy during these trying times, and we are looking forward to being together again soon.

Four ways you can help your neighbors this week!
GENESEE HILL ICE-CREAM TRUCK: The Genesee Hill Elementary PTA‘s school-supply-drive fundraiser had to be postponed earlier this month because of smoke – but what perfect weather for the new date, tomorrow (Wednesday, September 30), 3-6 pm. The Full Tilt Ice Cream truck will be at Dakota Homestead across from the school (50th/Dakota) with cones for $6, including vegan options.
LAFAYETTE DINE-OUT FUNDRAISER: Also on Wednesday, you can help the Lafayette Elementary PTA by getting food from Chipotle (4730 California SW), 4-8 pm. No third-party orders – if you’re ordering online in advance, it has to be via Chipotle’s website or app. More info in our calendar listing.
FOOD DRIVE AT OLG: On Saturday (October 3), 10 am-2 pm, a food drive is part of Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s Drop-In Services Day. Here’s everything that’s happening:
Get your flu shot. Register to vote or update your voter registration. Pick up a mask and care kit. Help restock the St. Vincent de Paul Food Pantry. One stop … a lot of good. Flu shots are provided by Walgreens and are free with many insurance plans (bring your card). Needed pantry items include non-perishable food (canned tuna/soup/chilis/stews, mac & cheese, pasta, peanut butter, pasta sauce), tp, hygiene items (soap, shampoo, conditioner), and household cleaning supplies (laundry and dish detergents, all-purpose spray cleaners, paper towels). Open to all wearing a mask and presented by OLG’s Immigrant Ministry.
This will be in the church’s north parking lot, 35th/Myrtle.
TOYS FOR TOTS: The pandemic will make this a challenging season for holiday helping, so some of it is starting early! Starting this Sunday (October 4th), the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle will collect Toys for Tots at the exit of the West Seattle Farmers’ Market (in front of Easy Street) from 10 am until 1:30 pm every Sunday until December 6. New unwrapped toys for all ages are needed. Also: An ongoing collection box is at Be’s Restaurant (4509 California SW) if you can’t make it to the Sunday dropoff.

Despite the pandemic, the Delridge Grocery Co-op has grown to reach another milestone – selling fresh food, regularly, to local residents.
Not as a full-fledged store, yet, but the DGC’s in-development store space is the operational base for what’s just emerged from five months of testing: Weekly sales of the “DGC Essentials Box,” 10 pounds of produce for $20.
Starting this week, the co-op is opening up orders for weekly pickup or delivery on Saturdays to the community at large – and even if you don’t need it, there’s a donation program too. We stopped by DGC HQ (5444 Delridge Way SW) this past Saturday as half a dozen safely spaced volunteers assembled the boxes for distribution.
(Alki UCC photos from past donation drives)
If you tried to drop off men’s clothing at this morning’s recycle/reuse event after the capacity maxed out, consider taking it to tomorrow’s donation drive outside Alki UCC, which is also collecting food, school supplies, and more, 10 am-3 pm Sunday:
Alki UCC invites our generous neighbors to bring donations of school supplies and men’s casual/work clothing as well as non-perishable food to our bi-monthly donation drive to benefit our vulnerable neighbors in need.
Food and basic supplies such as toilet paper and diapers are distributed through the White Center Food Bank. We’re accepting school supplies for all grades on behalf of one or more local schools to be distributed when students are back at in-person learning. Suggestions include backpacks, #2 pencils, black and blue ink pens, crayons, lined paper, glue, small scissors, colored pens, writing notebooks, and colored paper.
Donations of clean new or used men’s casual/work clothing are distributed through the Westside Interfaith Network‘s hot lunch program for people experiencing homelessness, The Welcome Table. There is a constant and growing demand for denim apparel, khaki’s, hoodies, T-shirts, sweatshirts, clean underwear, socks, shoes, and all kinds of outerwear for the fall and winter. Please … NO dress shirts, sport coats or suits.
Alki UCC is at 6115 SW Hinds.
Though the results will take a while to tally, the gratitude is immediate! The West Seattle Food Bank is sharing words of thanks to everyone who participated in the Taste of West Seattle the last five days – from diners/donors to venues – as well as word that (update) 4 venues are extending their participation:
Thank you to everyone who participated in the 2020 Taste of West Seattle, presented by Metropolitan Market. It was a wonderful week of delicious food, drink, and community support. We are so grateful to our generous local eateries and drinkeries, sponsors, and neighbors like you who made this new flavor of the Taste of West Seattle not only possible, but a success!
Remember to submit your stamped Taste Passport by October 16th to be entered to win a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines and other prizes. Mail your Passport to the West Seattle Food Bank at 3419 SW Morgan St. Seattle, WA 98126 or drop it off at participating eateries.
The deliciousness continues! Best of Hands Barrelhouse has decided to continue to donate 10% of sales on Taste menu items until September 27th, Pot Pie Factory will continue until September 30th, and Phoenecia until October 16th! [Editor’s note: West Seattle Wine Cellars added a comment below that they’re extending too, through Saturday, September 26th.]

The Senior Center of West Seattle invites you to help its work continue via a pandemic-style event – here’s the announcement:

All donations made before Sept. 29 will be matched up to $20,200, thanks to a generous local donor. So far, the event has raised $52,000.
Then join fellow supporters in an interactive, live virtual event on Tuesday, Sept. 29. The event will include entertainment, activity demonstrations and updates live from the Senior Center.
All donations fund the Senior Center, a fun and vibrant social gathering place in the heart of the West Seattle Junction. Ken King invites you to join him this Saturday in West Seattle:
I am walking from Canada to Florida to fight suicide.
You are welcome to join us on our 5-mile walk around Alki Beach on Saturday, Sept. 26th, 10:00 am.
This is a five-mile walk around Alki Beach, from SW Canada Drive & Beach Dr. SW, to SW Florida St. & Harbor Ave. SW. Each mile represents one year from when our son Simon died from suicide.
I want to commemorate Simon’s life by participating in the Seattle, Washington Out of the Darkness Walk, an event that raises money for suicide prevention research, education, survivor and awareness programs. I will be among hundreds of thousands of people walking in more than 300 cities across the country to send a message of hope to the world.
I am walking in the Out of the Darkness Walk, to raise awareness and let people know it is OK to talk about suicide and mental illness. I want to do my part to prevent this tragedy from happening in other families.
To help make a difference, you can click this link to visit my personal fundraising webpage and donate online. I encourage you to share this letter with other people who may want to lend their support as well.
That link goes to a social-media page but you can also donate via this page on the open web.
If you have a no-longer-needed bicycle, here’s a chance to get it to someone who can use it:
350 Seattle is organizing a bike collection drive in collaboration with Bike Works now through September 26! We’re hoping to collect 200 bikes.
Why does this matter right now? Bikes provide pandemic-safe, low-cost, and climate-friendly transportation for essential workers and other people across Seattle. But right now, they’re in short supply; bike sales have soared, and many shops only have expensive bikes left. This means that many of the people that need them most can’t get their hands on them. Each year, Bike Works fixes up thousands of bikes and distributes them across Southeast Seattle. Through bike giveaways and youth programs, Bike Works aims to make cycling accessible, affordable, and welcoming to people of all backgrounds, abilities, and incomes.
What are the logistics? We’re hosting drop-off sites in West Seattle, South Seattle, Capitol Hill, Magnolia, Phinney Ridge, Ballard, the U-District, Northeast Seattle, and Woodinville on Saturday, September 26 (and most of the sites will also be open the week before). To donate follow this link, and someone will contact you with more information about where to drop off your bikes or bike gear: http://bit.ly/350SBikeDrive. And, please feel free to share this form with friends, family, and neighbors that have bikes or bike gear to donate.
Thanks to Cynthia, who’s hosting the West Seattle dropoff, for letting us know! Once you send in the form, you’ll hear back, and she’s taking dropoffs between 7:30 am and 7:30 pm all week.
From the West Seattle Booster Club, which supports programs at West Seattle High School:
The WS Booster Club is taking orders for duffle bags until October 1st. These bags are great for all students and fans of WSHS! This is the biggest fundraiser for the Booster Club, which supports athletic, music, and cheer programs at WSHS. Visit wsbooster.com/shop, select Duffle Bag – PREORDER.
Tomorrow is the first of five days for the pandemic-reimagined Taste of West Seattle, helping the West Seattle Food Bank prevent hunger and homelessness. Here’s a reminder from WSFB, including an updated list of participating venues and the menu items that will contribute:
The 2020 Taste of West Seattle starts tomorrow! Sunday, September 20th through Thursday, September 24th, enjoy tasty food and drinks from your favorite local participating establishments and support the West Seattle Food Bank.

From Sunday to Thursday, you can dine-in or get takeout and enjoy delicious food and drink from some of West Seattle’s favorite spots! (Note: Orders through 3rd-party apps, including Uber Eats, GrubHub, DoorDash, and more are ineligible.)
Once you order from the Taste menu at a participating business, you will receive a Taste Passport. The more stamps you get on your Passport by ordering from Taste menus, the more drawings you are entered to win. After the Taste of West Seattle ends, mail your Passport to the West Seattle Food Bank or drop it off at participating eateries by October 16th. The grand prize is a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines!

We’re continuing to spotlight ways to help neighbors affected by the pandemic, as well as ways to get help. This weekend, if you’re able to help, you can do it by shopping a big yard sale in South Park, coordinated by the Concord International Elementary PTA:
This weekend, September 19-20 [noon-6 pm both days], we are hosting a fundraiser to raise money for rent and utility assistance for Concord Elementary School families in the South Park neighborhood.
75% of Concord Elementary families live below the poverty line and many have not qualified for unemployment benefits during this pandemic.
During our last fundraiser yard sale in July, we raised just under $10,000, and every penny went to rent and utility assistance for our most vulnerable neighbors.
Here’s more background on the school and the PTA’s work to help families and students. The sale address is 8507 14th Avenue S., just west of the bridge – here’s a map.
Another way to help this weekend, if you can donate: Hope Lutheran Church in The Junction is hosting a drive-thru collection on Saturday (September 19th) from 10:00 am-noon.
All proceeds benefit The Welcome Table, which is run by WIN – Westside Interfaith Network. This is a free community event that happens every Saturday at Body of Christ Church in White Center. They serve neighborhood families who are low-income or homeless. Each week a meal is provided. Other items are also offered such as used clothing, personal toiletries, and food. Many families use this “pop-up food bank” each week to help ends meet.
Please consider donating these items (please, no expired items)

Need some more brightness after all these smoke-hazed days? Beautiful flowers like that can help – but they don’t just magically appear at local markets. They are grown on small farms. And like so many, those farmers have been hard-hit in these times. So they’re having a flower fundraiser, with online orders through tomorrow, and a Saturday pickup spot in White Center. Explains Cynthia Yongvang of the Hmong Association of Washington, who emailed to let us know abut this: “Our fundraiser would benefit both the Hmong flower farmers who are struggling financially during this pandemic and also our 4 very small communities (Mien, Hmong, Khmu, and Lao) in the Puget Sound area by providing rental-assistance relief to families in need so that they won’t be displaced during this time.” The order form is here, and it explains, “This weekend, based on the farmers’ selection of flowers, the mix bouquets will include sunflowers, dahlias, lilies, phlox, statice , snapdragons, gladiolus and greenery for $25, with $10 of every bouquet going to our rental assistance program.” Orders will be accepted until 3 pm tomorrow (Thursday, September 17th), with pickup options (also listed on the order form) including 9 am-noon Saturday in White Center.
(Sue Lindblom of Illusions Hair Design and Deena Knapton, Staples manager, with some of the donated supplies)
Thanks to everyone who helped out with this year’s Pencil Me In For Kids school-supply drive! Tonight, a report on its community-powered success:
As school started, Pencil Me In For Kids (PMIFK) swung into action. Members of the Rotary Club of West Seattle delivered boxes and boxes of pencils, markers, colored pencils and other basic supplies to six West Seattle elementary schools this week.
Monies for the purchase of the materials came from numerous sources including the Rotary Club of West Seattle. Individuals made donations via Fauntleroy Church and Illusions Hair Design.
Staples of Westwood Village accepted donations of items at their store for the last several months and offered at cost prices to PMIFK. This allowed PMIFK to purchase items valued at almost $10,000 for less than $4,000. Staples has been an active partner for several years.
PMIFK was started in 1994 by Sue Lindblom of Illusions Hair Design. The founding concept was that grade school is the time to build self-esteem and that it’s important to fit. Hence the organization provides supplies for at-need children. Learn more about PMIFK here.
As we reported a month ago, an online donation fund was part of PMIFK this year too.
As previously mentioned, it’s a new format for this year’s Taste of West Seattle – the first since previous beneficiary West Seattle Helpline merged with the West Seattle Food Bank – instead of one event, it’s five days of special menu items at participating food and drink establishments! The latest list of participants is in this update from WSFB:
Enjoy food and drink from your favorite local participating establishments September 20th-24th and support your neighbors!
Presented by Metropolitan Market, the 2020 Taste of West Seattle will have participating eateries and drinkeries donating a percentage of sales of special Taste Menu items back to the West Seattle Food Bank to support our neighbors. From Sunday, September 20th to Thursday, September 24th you can dine in or get takeout and enjoy delicious food and drink from some of West Seattle’s favorite spots!
Eat, drink, support local, and have fun! All participating eateries will be listed on a Taste Passport (available at participating eateries). The more stamps you get on your Passport by ordering from participating businesses, the more drawings you are entered to win. After the Taste of West Seattle ends, mail your Passport to the West Seattle Food Bank or drop it off at participating eateries by October 16th to be entered to win. The grand prize is a pair of round-trip tickets on Alaska Airlines!
The Taste of West Seattle has always been about bringing neighbors together, promoting local eateries and drinkeries, and strengthening our wonderful West Seattle community. Now, more than ever, we see the importance of coming together (safely) to support each other.
We hope you join us for the Taste of West Seattle!
