West Seattle, Washington
09 Monday
Next Saturday (December 7), girls from high schools around the city will spend the day playing flag football downtown. Among them will be West Seattle High School‘s new team.
Parent club manager Pamela Quadros sent that photo with word that the team had made history two weeks ago with WSHS’s first-ever girls’ flag-football practice. She says students Thea and Maggie Harnish and Charlee Cummings founded the team, and that they’re getting support from organizations including the Seahawks. They also express thanks to coach Kris Smith, WSHS athletic director Corey Sorenson, and Underdog for running the girls’ flag-football league (which also includes Chief Sealth International High School – here’s the full schedule for next week and beyond).
Two more reader reports in West Seattle Crime Watch:
CAR PROWLER ON VIDEO: Chris sent the video from Seaview, explaining, “At 04:33 last night this bundle of holiday cheer broke into my truck and stole a small bag of tools. Good reminder not to leave anything in your vehicle.” Placeholder report #, pending permanent SPD number, is T00018216.
MAIL-THEFT ALERT: Received via text:
I wanted to let the residents know of mail theft along 16th Ave SW in West Seattle. The same street as South Seattle Community College. Our mail boxes are left open and again I caught someone at 6 a.m. going in mail boxes, I yelled, and he cursed me out and ran into a waiting white small sedan. He had on a black jacket with a hood. They come between 12 and 6:30 a.m. – please check your mail daily!!!
Thanks for the photos! Saturday’s sunshine concluded with another sunset spectacle. The photo above is from Lael; the one below is from Gene Pavola:

(WSB photo, 2023 Kiwanis Pancake Breakfast)
One week from today – Saturday, December 7th – brings some of the biggest events of the holiday season. It all starts at 7 am in the Alki Masonic Center (40th/Edmunds) with the Kiwanis Club of West Seattle‘s annual pancake breakfast. $8 in advance or $10 at the door – and kids under 10 eat free! – gets you pancakes, Husky Deli ham, orange juice, coffee, and tea. Free Santa photos! Raffles! Benefit wreath, ornament, and nut sales! And you’re welcome to bring new unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots (with active-duty Marines there to gratefully accept them). Show up whatever time works for you between 7 am and 11 am next Saturday morning. The entrance is right off the (free) parking lot on the south side of the Masonic Center (and again, you can buy your discounted advance ticket right now by going here).
P.S. The Kiwanis Club also is raising money for its community work right now via an online auction, with items including gift certificates/cards for local businesses, from coffee to clothing (and beyond!). Go here to browse and bid!
Small Business Saturday continues at independent businesses all over West Seattle (and the rest of the nation). We have photos and a travelogue – shop-a-logue? – from Dan Jacobs of the Admiral Neighborhood Association:
Small Business Saturday in the Admiral District celebrates the best of our local small businesses while enjoying the charm and creativity of the neighborhood on a beautiful day. We started our day by grabbing brunch at Admiral Neighborhood Association partner Arthur’s, known for its fresh and locally inspired dishes as well as giving back to neighbors in need. Next up is a stop in at ANA partner Bebop Waffle Shop, who will be serving up creative and comforting sweet or savory waffles for just one more month. Get them while you still can!
Heading up California Ave, we enjoyed some of the unique Admiral shopping experiences at some of our local favorites. First up, things are busy at Hoste, which features a curated selection of stylish home goods.
Then down California, stopping in at Alair to browse through some unique gifts and local favorites.
Next up is Wend Jewelry to admire Wendy’s beautifully handcrafted pieces, and then stopping in at Soirée for some tasty culinary delights.
Other indie Admiral businesses include longtime WSB sponsor West Seattle Runner (2743 California SW), where, among other things, folks have been picking up their Seattle Marathon bibs today (the big race is tomorrow).
WSB contributors are out roaming the Small Business Saturday sights and deals – here’s what we’re finding in The Junction:
STOP ‘N’ SHOP: You might remember Angela from Funky Jane’s – we photographed her today at the Center for Active Living‘s Stop ‘n’ Shop, where the SBS deal is 20 percent off everything, till 4 pm today and again 10 am-4 pm Sunday (California/Oregon).
FLEURT: Tax-free all day, with mini-Christmas tree if you spend $75 or more. (4536 California SW)

MYSTERY MADE: That’s proprietor Cory, who says his shop is not having a sale but they do have Rainier Beer on hand for thirsty holiday shoppers (of age, of course) … they’re at 4537 California SW.

WUGPRINTS AT VAIN: Another pop-up – owner Joshua illustrates all the work, just started in June 2024. He’s holding his most popular postcard. He’s at VAIN (4513 California SW) till 3 pm.
We’ll say it again – shop small biz EVERY day to keep the community strong!
Two vehicle reports this morning:
STOLEN PICKUP TRUCK: The photo and report are from Brian:
Our truck was just stolen last night in the Diamond parking lot behind Puerto Vallarta! 1987 Ford F-250 single cab.
We’ll add the plate number when we get it.
ABANDONED BLUE HYUNDAI: The photo and report are from Maya:
My husband and I were out walking our dogs and came upon this car, still running in the alleyway on Juneau between 34th and 35th. Door locks had been broken and obviously stolen. California plates, blue Hyundai. Has been reported to SPD, but maybe someone will recognize it.
They saw it around 8:30, so it may have since been moved/towed – if so and it’s yours, check with police.
9:39 AM: Thanks to Kersti Muul for the tip. Orcas are southbound in the Bainbridge-Seattle ferry lanes, “spread out.” She says they’re Southern Residents.
11:27 AM: In addition to the updates in comments (thank you!), Jay texted to say the orcas are off Lincoln Park.
11:33 AM: Another texter (we’re at 206-293-6302, any time) reports “large pod of orcas south of Fauntleroy Ferry.”

Saturday (November 30) is the last day to answer this year’s Seattle Public Safety Survey. Southwest Precinct crime-prevention coordinator Jennifer Satterwhite says this was the representation from West Seattle neighborhoods as of midweek:
Alaska Junction – 103
Alki – 97
North Admiral – 92
Fauntleroy – 80
Roxhill/Westwood/Arbor Heights – 69
High Point – 56
Morgan – 55
Highland Park – 52
North Delridge – 48
South Delridge – 38
Pigeon Point – 11
(Not all West Seattle neighborhoods are represented because back when they came up with Micro-Community Policing Plans, those were the neighborhoods that had active community council. But you can reply to the survey no matter where you live in WS – just go here. Results – which are anonymous – eventually will be provided to the Seattle Police Department, though Seattle University administers the survey.
The sign in the window says “Rug Sale Pop-Up Shop,” but what you’ll find at 4452 California SW – just north of Oregon – is more than just rugs. Proprietor Sev emailed us to explain the shop is in that space – site of future development – through the end of December, selling “handmade rugs, handmade antique decorative pillow covers, Turkish bath spa towels, purses, and other unique stuff.” Much of the merchandise – not just the towels – is imported from Turkey, with some from Morocco and India, Sev explains. This is a local enterprise – Sev and husband have lived in West Seattle for 27 years. The pop-up shop is open 10 am to 7 pm most days. The space was previously occupied by West Seattle Coworking, which moved its north space to 3703 California SW (its south space remains at 9030 35th SW).
Another cold night begins … and the West Seattle Giving Spirit sustains the Westside Neighbors Shelter, our next spotlighted organization in our holiday-season series. Three times a week through year’s end, WSB is bringing you this special holiday-season opportunity to learn more about, and support, some of our area’s hardworking nonprofits, in partnership with the Learning Communities Foundation. Tonight – consider this one-of-a-kind shelter:
On a freezing night in 2019, Keith Hughes opened the doors of the American Legion Hall to a handful of people with nowhere to sleep safely and stay warm. As Commander of American Legion Post 160, he was used to assisting veterans; however, he knew he also had to respond to the emergency needs of the men and women huddled outside his door.
Since then, Westside Neighbors Shelter has expanded to act as a morning warmup center year-round, with hot drinks and breakfast. From November into March, the hall becomes a sleeping room filled with cots, giving unhoused adults a place to stay warm and dry when the outside temperatures fall to dangerous levels. Hot dinners and breakfast are provided by the local community. People experiencing homelessness can shower and get clean clothing. All adults are welcome, regardless of gender, whether or not they’re a veteran.
Westside Neighbors Shelter is a volunteer-operated emergency shelter; it currently receives no funding from government sources. The shelter has only one paid employee: a security professional who watches the hall when it’s occupied overnight. Community donations of money, labor, and supplies help provide food, heat, and basic sanitation for the increasing number of people unable to find a place to live in West Seattle and Burien.
As word of this place grew, so did the number of men and women hoping for a hot meal, a shower and clean clothes, and a place to shelter from a freezing night. The number of people seeking shelter here has risen dramatically–from up to 20 per night in 2019 to up to 40 per night in 2023. “I don’t see that stopping or even leveling off,” says Keith.
Keith estimates that last winter the shelter handed out 1,300 pairs of socks, 800 stocking caps, 800 pairs of gloves, 500 sets of clothing, and 400 winter coats. “We take care of a lot of people here. I am sure it’s 500 or 600 individuals over the winter,” he says.
“We’re providing temporary emergency sheltering. Most of the people who come here are on a journey to find permanent housing solutions, and this is a stopover on the journey.”
“We don’t get a lot of feedback from people who are here for one or two nights and move on. But out of the core of longer-term clients, we have had our successes with those who have been able to find interim housing solutions, and those who have come to their own realization that they need professional help for mental-health issues, alcohol and drug overuse issues, and we have sometimes been able to help them find resources to meet their needs. Those resources are outside of this facility, because we can’t provide those resources directly here at this time,” says Keith.
Your support can keep dozens of people safe and warm every night this time of year.

Another holiday-season tradition in West Seattle! The Duwamish Tribe Longhouse has opened its doors to Native arts and crafts creators for this year’s holiday-season Native Art Market. It’s always a mix of new and returning vendors – among the new, Wilma Gloria, of the Tulalip Tribes, with creations including hats and belts woven from cedar:
In her arms is Lovey. They’re near the great-room door, as is Ixtlixochitl Salinas (White Hawk):
Some fair participants are creating on site, including Britt Rynearson from the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation:
She’s creating “kinship circles”:
There are many other vendors to browse, with creations including drums, combs, ornaments, paintings, and body care. While you’re there, also visit the exhibits for the Cultural Center and learn about Duwamish Tribe history; fry bread is for sale toward the back of the great room. The fair continues until 5 pm today and again 10 am-5 pm Saturday and Sunday at 4705 West Marginal Way SW; if you’re driving, note there’s parking on both sides of Marginal (and crossing flaggers if you end up parking on the east side of the street).
Just texted:
Awesome homemade Christmas tree sales and goodies (cookies and warm drinks) being sold on our neighbors’ front lawn right now … 48th Ave SW just north of Hudson. Very pretty trees salvaged from a woodland thinning project. Hoping you could spread the word.
PS – Open until 5 pm today and tomorrow, we’re told.
Thanks to Blair for the tip. This was the scene outside Bang Bar Thai Restaurant in The Junction this morning – its planters were broken into pieces across the doorway. Nobody was around when we went by for the photo so we don’t have additional details yet.
If there’s anything guitar-related on your holiday list, get down to Thunder Road Guitars (6400 California SW; WSB sponsor) right now – with an in-store purchase, you get lunch from the Dick’s Drive-In burgers-and-shakes truck, which is at the store until 2 pm. (If you miss the truck, the sale lasts longer – online as well as in-store – through Small Business Saturday.)
10:08 AM: That’s 13-year-old Nathan Tavel, warming up moments ago for his hour-long bowl-a-thon at West Seattle Bowl. He’s the only bowler here before the official opening time, raising money for local food banks. So far pledges are covering $2.09 per pin, $68 per “turkey” (three or more consecutive strikes). We’re here to watch and to update. Nathan’s bowling on lanes 23 and 24; he bowls 216 in his youth league and has been doing bowling fundraisers for more than four years.
10:15 AM: $500 raised for the food banks so far. Pledges were accepted up till Nathan started bowling; this is also being streamed on social media, with Nathan’s dad, community advocate Phil Tavel, narrating.
10:20 AM: First “turkey” (three strikes in a row), raising $68 more. … Moments later, another one. … and that string ran to 11 in a row by our count.
10:29 AM: Almost midway through, Nathan threw his first perfect game – 300. He’s picking up steam as this rolls on. “Nathan’s crushing it,” his dad declared. Nathan himself is a young man of few words, so far.
10:43 AM: “Holding up well,” the bowler allowed. So far he’s knocked down 1313 pins, with 41 strikes and 6 turkeys, raising just over $3,000.
10:52 AM: Another turkey. Nathan will be bowling until about 11:05 since this started just after the top of the hour.
11:00 AM: Just a few minutes to go. Nathan’s remained calm and steady throughout this – and his dad informs us he’s now up to 2123 pins, 60 strikes, and nine turkeys – that’s almost $5,000 for the food banks.
11:16 AM: Final total, just past $6,200, to be split between West Seattle and White Center Food Banks – 2,577 pins, 73 strikes, 12 turkeys. If you pledged, watch for your PayPal invoice; prize winners will be notified too. (And now the bowling alley’s open for regular bowling for the day.)
ADDED SATURDAY: Update from the Tavel family:
Our final numbers based on a few last minute pledges that came in:
We had 41 pledges.
For a total of $2.27 per pin and $80 per Turkey. That’s a total raised of $6,809

Now that Thanksgiving is down to its final hours, it’s on to the next phase of the holiday season, and more fun, with dozens of events featured in our West Seattle Holiday Guide. Among them: Are you registered yet for this year’s Winter Wander scavenger hunt? It’s just a week away – starting Friday night, December 6. Organizer Alice Kuder has this reminder:
Join your friends and neighbors for the West Seattle Winter Wander Scavenger Hunt! Now in its fifth year, Winter Wander has grown every year, from 12 teams in the first year to 128 teams last year! 95 local businesses have participated over the course of the five years, and an estimated 50,000 smiles have been generated!
This guaranteed-fun event is free to everyone of all ages and runs from 5 PM Friday, Dec. 6th to 7 PM Sunday, Dec. 15th. Instructions for this year’s hunt are available for download at wondersinaliceland.com/winter-wander. Gather a team (or go solo) and put your heads together to solve the clues to the locations of fifteen West Seattle businesses and ten private locations. The Bingo-style clue sheet will be posted at 5 PM on Dec. 6th at wondersinaliceland.com/winter-wander. Wanderers who submit selfies in front of the correct solutions will be entered into a drawing for duffle bags filled with gift cards and swag from local businesses. Register your team at wondersinaliceland.com/winter-wander anytime before 7 PM, Dec. 15th.

Thanks to David Hutchinson for the photo! In case you missed it while in the kitchen or at the table, that’s how our sunnier-than-forecast Thanksgiving Day ended a little more than an hour ago. Temps are expected to drop into the 30s again tonight, with patchy fog returning tomorrow (same way today started, before the sunshine took over).
If you haven’t had dinner yet, you still have time to get to the West Seattle Eagles‘ HQ (4426 California SW), where they’re serving a free feast to anyone who shows up – membership not required – until 5 pm.
Volunteers are serving up a traditional turkey dinner, all the way to the cranberry sauce, and of course dessert:
While dinner is free, donations are welcome too, to support the Eagles’ “People Helping People” mission.
