Remembering John F. Watson, 1947-2023

Family and friends are remembering John F. Watson and sharing this remembrance with the community:

John was the first-born child of Frank and Helen Watson in West Seattle in 1947. He passed away 3/22/23 in Gig Harbor.

John attended Holy Rosary Grade School and graduated from West Seattle High School in 1965.  He then attended Highline CC and University of Washington before starting an illustrious career at Boeing. He spent over 30 years at Boeing, making many life-long friends. John always loved being on the water and owned 2 beautiful yachts, the Scorpio and the White Cap.  He loved taking friends and family out on Lake Washington, Elliott Bay, Puget Sound, and the San Juans. He was kind beyond words and generous to a fault.  He was an avid bridge player and art collector.  Loved dogs, Cadillacs, Thunderbirds, and cookies!  His health deteriorated over the last year, making life difficult.

We are thankful to his many friends who helped care for him, including, but not limited to, Rosalie, Mike, and Janis. He is survived by his two brothers Ric and Andy Watson, sister Debbie Coghill, their spouses, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins who all adored him.

(WSB publishes West Seattle obituaries and memorial announcements by request, free of charge. Please email the text, and a photo if available, to westseattleblog@gmail.com)

MISSING: Have you seen Leticia Martinez-Cosman?

From SPD:

Seattle Police detectives are asking for the public’s help in locating Leticia Martinez-Cosman, who was last seen Friday evening on March 31st at T-Mobile Park during the Seattle Mariners game.

UPDATE: Major Seattle Fire response for commercial building on West Marginal (updated with investigation info)

2:38 PM: Seattle Fire is sending a big response to a commercial building in the 6900 block of West Marginal Way SW. Updates to come.

2:41 PM: First unit on scene reports “light smoke.” … Firefighters have told dispatch this is a marijuana-growing business. They are still trying to locate the source of the fire/smoke.

(Added: Reader photo)

2:52 PM: They’re calling for more units and also blocking off southbound West Marginal in the area. … This is on West Marginal south of Highland Park Way.

3:07 PM: Firefighters have declared the fire under control and are dismissing some units. … Our archives include coverage of a fire here seven years ago, with information that it had been an “urban (cannabis) farm” since before then.

3:13 PM: SFD says the fire is “knocked down” and that no injuries are reported.

3:36 PM: The fire’s now declared “tapped” (out). SFD’s investigator was reported to be on scene; we’ll update later with any information on the cause.

ADDED FRIDAY: SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo says, “Fire investigators ruled the incident as accidental, and likely caused by an overheated lamp or failure within the electrical system. Estimated loss is $40,000.”

West Seattle Greenway ‘spur’ to be built

Neighbors on 36th SW south of Providence Mount St. Vincent recently noticed an SDOT crew marking the street for future greenway construction that was a surprise to some. Checking WSB archives, we found a mention five years ago that a Camp Long-vicinity greenway “spur” was possible as part of what was referred to at the time as “Phase 3” of the 35th Avenue SW Safety Project. That reference also suggested SDOT would be talking with neighbors in advance of any such construction, which apparently hasn’t happened yet, so we asked about it. Here’s the reply from SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson:

We’re extending the West Seattle Neighborhood Greenway on 36th Ave SW to create safer spaces for walking, biking, and rolling in West Seattle. This extension will connect to Camp Long Park via 35th Ave SW, using the recently built traffic signal at 35th Ave SW and SW Dawson St.

Construction is expected to begin by early summer and finish later in the summer (crews visited the neighborhood this past weekend to make pre-construction markings on the pavement). We will send construction notices in the mail before the actual construction work starts.

The extension was listed in our 2021 Bike Master Plan update, and is part of a multi-year, multi-project approach to create safer spaces for walking, biking, and rolling in West Seattle. The end result will look similar to other Neighborhood Greenways, including:

-Speed humps / cushions to ensure drivers travel at a safe speed
-Stop signs for cross-street traffic
-Bike lane markings on the street
-Wayfinding and neighborhood greenway signs

Here’s a map of the project zone.

YOU CAN HELP: Chief Sealth IHS PTSA fundraiser for Staff Appreciation Week

The Chief Sealth International High School PTSA is about 75 percent of the way to its goal for this fundraiser. Here’s what we weres asked to share with you:

Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week is May 8-12, 2023. Please help us show how grateful we are to Chief Sealth’s Teachers and Staff for everything they do to support our students and nurture our community!

I can think of so many instances where a teacher or a staff member has stepped up and supported my kids through some of their hardest days and some of their best wins. I also carry life-long gratitude with me for the teachers that encouraged me and challenged me to grow many years ago when I myself was a student at Sealth!

Whether you’re a parent or relative of a current or past Sealth student, a student or alum of Sealth yourself, or you want to just share in a show of gratitude in honor of all the teachers and school staff that made a difference in your life, we NEED you!

We are raising $2000 to fund a week of activities for Chief Sealth’s 150 teachers and staff, including a luncheon, a beverage and treats service and other tokens of our appreciation to let them know how much we care!

We want this celebration to stand out. The past few years have been so challenging for our public school teachers and staff. They have faced unbelievable challenges during COVID, requiring them to adopt new technologies, support students in new ways, and bring their best to school every day. They have gone above and beyond, even through these past few difficult years, to make every student count and to make a top education accessible to all.

Please donate what you can; any amount is appreciated! All funds will go directly to the PTSA and will be earmarked for Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week.

WEST SEATTLE HISTORY: Log House Museum expands hours, accepts Original Bakery donations

A two-part announcement from the Southwest Seattle Historical Society‘s Log House Museum:

The Southwest Seattle Historical Society is honored to announce that it has accepted a donation of unique artifacts from The Original Bakery, which closed its doors last month after nearly 90 years in business.

The Bakery opened in 1935 in the Adams Building, which was built about ten years prior. The Bakery has had multiple owners, including Bernie Alonzo, who purchased the business in 1975 from Bill Latta and Florian Dunbar. The Alonzo family ran the Bakery for nearly 50 years until Bernie’s retirement last month. The museum received the request to accept these donated objects – including posters made by local historian Ron Richardson about the Fauntleroy Neighborhood and the Original Bakery sign (which preceded the Alonzo family) – from Anna Alonzo, daughter of Bernie. The Historical Society Board of Trustees voted to accept these items into its collection both for their historic value but also because it has few artifacts from this building and business district.“We are grateful the posters Ron Richardson made and the Original Bakery sign found a good home in the Log House museum,” says Alonzo, “We know Mrs. Richardson is really happy about it too.”

You can learn more about the history of the Original Bakery in the March 2023 Fauntleroy Community Association Newsletter.

The Log House Museum, operated by the Southwest Seattle Historical Society, is located at 3003 61st Ave SW, one block from Alki Beach. The museum is now open Fridays and Saturdays from 12-4 pm.

FOLLOWUP: Highland Park Way/Holden project open for bidding

(March 2020 photo)

Though we’ve reported recently on more than a few government projects moving sluggishly, some are moving forward – such as Highland Park Way/Holden, which is now open for bidding. The centerpiece of the project is a permanent signal, replacing the “temporary” one quickly installed shortly after the West Seattle Bridge closure started funneling tons of detour traffic through the intersection three years ago. The official summary of the project on the city’s bidding website is:

Replace temporary signal with a permanent signal; re-channelize the intersection; realign curb, gutter & sidewalk; install ADA ramps; drainage and street lighting. The project also includes electrical work and rebar installation.

We asked SDOT what “rechannelize” refers to; spokesperson Mariam Ali replied, “Rechannelization was used to describe the project prior to the bridge closure. However, relative to what was out there before, the intersection was already rechannelized when the temporary signal went in. We will now make the temporary signal permanent, and the layout of the signal will not change. The only change is that we will add in concrete to the areas where paint prohibits people to drive and permanent markings, like sharrows, that were not laid down with the temporary striping.” Bidding is open for another week; once a contractor’s been chosen, they’ll set a schedule for the work.

Sent by Shankar:

I wanted to report some dumped, possibly stolen items I found last night in the alley between 31st Pl and 32nd Ave near Barton. This happened between 9:30 and 10 PM (the items weren’t there when I began my walk with my dog, but had been dumped there when we returned). This looks like it might have been a shed/garage break-in — the items include garden shears, bolt cutters, a dolly, and Christmas decorations. Anyone missing these is welcome to get them back from me.

If yours, email us – westseattleblog@gmail.com – and we’ll connect you.

WATER TAXI: What to know as spring/summer schedule approaches

(File photo)

The West Seattle route of the King County Water Taxi starts its spring/summer schedule later this month. Since it’s been running seven days a week all year, the schedule difference will be the addition of Friday and Saturday night runs, starting April 21st, running through 10:45 pm departures from downtown and 11 pm departures from West Seattle. To get ready for that, the West Seattle Water Taxi will be out of service the previous weekend, April 15-16. Metro – which operates the Water Taxi – says that will be necessary “to conduct training and maintenance.” The spring/summer schedule will continue through October 13th. (As for whether it’ll go to a weekday-only schedule after that – we’re checking.)

If your nonprofit needs grant $, West Seattle Garden Tour might be able to help

 |   Gardening | West Seattle news | WS culture/arts

This year’s West Seattle Garden Tour is still more than two months away – June 25th – but in one important way, the WSGT is looking ahead to next year already. This announcement explains:

Each year the West Seattle Garden Tour, a 501(c)(3) organization, seeks out other non-profits whose goals fit our mission — to promote horticultural-based interests, educational projects, and arts programs — within West Seattle and neighboring communities, to provide them the funds they need to continue and complete their efforts. The purchase of garden tour and raffle tickets, along with the generous support of our sponsors, makes that goal possible.

For non-profit organizations interested in requesting a 2024 grant from the West Seattle Garden Tour, applications are now available. Application forms can be found on our website at westseattlegardentour.org/grants along with submission requirements and instructions. Completed applications are due to the West Seattle Garden Tour Grants Chair, Karen Fields, by July 15, 2023. Our Grants Committee will select 8-10 applicants out of all applications for furtheronsideration by our entire West Seattle Garden Tour Committee. Those selected 8-10 applicants will be notified by August 1 and will be scheduled to present their organization’s project at a committee meeting beginning in the fall. Non-profits who receive a grant from the garden tour will not be eligible to apply the following year, to allow more organizations to compete for funds.

P.S. If you want to see gorgeous gardens while contributing to the WSGT’s community giving, tickets for this year’s tour are on sale now via the WSGT website.
