West Seattle Crime Watch: Stolen baseball gear

Emily is hoping her son’s stolen baseball gear might turn up somewhere. Her report:

We had our car broken into last night while parked on 54th (off Genesee). Stolen was a pair of sunglasses and a black Northface jacket but the big loss was they stole my 10-year-old son’s baseball bag … If by chance the thief decided to toss the bag and gear, we would love for people to keep eyes open on Genesee while walking and if found, a reward will be given.

We asked Emily for details on the gear in the bag: “The bag was an Easton bag and it in were an Easton Ghost X bat, black batting helmet with a D logo on front, a Wilson size 12 mitt, some accessories and a team hoodie with (surname starting with G) on the back.” Still awaiting the SPD incident number; the temporary number provided with filing was T19003684.

West Seattle weekend scene: St. Patrick’s Day green stripe

Every year, we check on St. Patrick’s Day to see if the mysterious green stripe on 41st SW north of Admiral Way has been freshened … and today, there it was, with a few shamrocks/4-leaf clovers along the way, stretching a few blocks north.

YOU’RE INVITED: 6th annual Niksokowaaks Pow Wow in Highland Park

Everyone’s invited Friday (March 22nd) to Highland Park Elementary for the sixth annual community Niksokowaaks Pow Wow! Here’s the announcement sent by Asha:

This is a free public event, all are welcome. Grand entry will be at 7 pm. There will be food and craft vendors.

This Pow Wow began when we saw a need in the community to help support the Native youth. Many children in our area are Native foster children or “urban” Native children. Many of them not knowing their culture or feeling the need to connect further with it. This Pow Wow allows them to dance, sing and further connect with the Native traditions. It also brings our community together to share in this celebration!

Date: Friday, March 22nd
Time: 6-10 pm
Location: Highland Park Elementary
1012 SW Trenton

Head dancers: This year we are honored to be represented by nine-year-old jingle dancer Bria Calhoun (Chumash, Esselen-Rumsen) and ten-year-old chicken dancer Weston Sam (Upper Skagit, Blackfeet).

The name Niksokowaaks was given to this pow wow by Blackfeet elder Myna “Molly” Bullshoe six years ago. It means all my children, all my relatives.

The event flyer, shown above, is also available in PDF, here.

Seen off West Seattle: Headed home

Thanks to Jim Borrow for the photo. That’s the Zhen Hua 31 headed north in Puget Sound on Saturday evening. You might not recognize it without the high-profile cargo – it was last seen passing West Seattle (twice!) a week and a half ago, carrying four huge cranes bound for the Port of Tacoma. They were unloaded this past week and now the heavy-lift ship is headed back to China – in the Strait of Juan de Fuca headed for the open Pacific as we get ready to publish this early Sunday.

West Seattle Crime Watch: Mailbox prowler

Make sure nothing’s left in your mailbox overnight; Jay sent this porch-camera clip as a reminder: “Our doorbell camera caught this mail prowler at 6:30 this morning in the North Admiral area (California & Atlantic). Just thought I’d spread the word!”

BASKETBALL: All-West Seattle championship game for middle-school girls’ title

(WSB photos)

From 1990s Chief Sealth superstar Sheila Lambert to the 2010s West Seattle HS team that’s been to state three of the past four years, girls’ basketball is an ever-stronger sport on the peninsula. And today was the latest proof – an all-West Seattle championship game at the Seattle Public Schools middle-school girls’ playoffs. Madison Middle School took the trophy in a hard-fought game with the defending champions from Denny International Middle School, 30-22.

The Denny gym, where the playoffs lasted all day, saw a great turnout of proud parents on both sides for the big game late this afternoon.

Congratulations to both schools! Madison’s head coach is Mary Roper; Denny’s is Joe Espinoza. (And we noted coaches from the local high-school teams on hand, no doubt to observe potential future players in action!)

FOLLOWUP: 28th/Andover RVs disappear, Harbor Avenue RVs reappear

A couple people have asked about the sudden absence of RVs on 28th SW and SW Andover in the West Seattle Health Club vicinity. We had been checking into that since seeing this on Thursday afternoon:

The RV was being towed westbound on Yancy, turning northbound on Avalon, one block west of the longtime parking area near WSHC. So we continued eastbound for a look: None on 28th, the area about which WSHC’s Dan Lehr had voiced the most concern when we talked with him a few weeks ago; one on SW Andover (whose owner is apparently a nearby housed resident, not using the vehicle as a residence). Just a few days ago, we had noted 10 in the area. The disappearance of RVs there led us to wonder about another area long popular for RV parking, Harbor Avenue; we subsequently found that stretch, where as few as three were parked in recent days, was up to 10.

Whether any of those were the same ones that had left 28th/Andover, we don’t know. But we wondered whether the Thursday tow had been part of an official “sweep,” so we took that question to Will Lemke, spokesperson for the city’s homelessness-response efforts. His reply:

It is my understanding an RV was towed in the area (Thursday), but it was not through the RV Remediation Pilot or an organized SPD event. SW CPT had tagged the area and the RV occupant ordered a private tow in order to comply with the 72hr law. I believe the vehicle did not run and was towed by the occupant to a repair shop.

SW CPT would be a reference to the Southwest Precinct Community Police Team. We went through both the 28th/Andover and Harbor Avenue areas again today before writing this and the numbers were the same in the respective areas as we’d noted on Thursday.

UPDATE: Seattle Fire ‘full response’ for 9000 block of 17th SW, downsized

(Added: WSB photo)

3:35 PM: A big Seattle Fire response is headed to a possible house fire in the 9000 block of 17th SW. Updates to come.

3:41 PM: SFD says the response is being downsized as firefighters investigate “light smoke coming from occupant’s fireplace.”

3:48 PM: Now they’re sending Ladder 11 back to check out “possible extension” of the problem. Our crew at the scene, meantime, has been told it was a chimney fire.

3:59 PM: Engine 11 and Ladder 11 firefighters are still investigating to be sure the fire didn’t spread beyond the chimney.

FOLLOWUP: Final sentence in Westcrest Park murder

Earlier this month, we reported that all three teenagers arrested after the September 2017 Westcrest Park murder of 15-year-old Derek Juarez-Lopez had pleaded guilty, and that two had been sentenced. That left 17-year-old Diego Carballo-Oliveros, eventually identified as the one who had fatally stabbed the victim while robbing him. He had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder but his hearing had to be delayed. It was finally held earlier this week and court documents show he was sentenced to a total of 21 years, including a two-year “enhancement” for deadly-weapon use. That’s one year less than prosecutors had recommended. The plea agreement and sentence incorporate an earlier robbery case against the defendant, for which he was still awaiting trial at the time of the murder.

ALSO TODAY: Talk with your school-board rep

One more event today, in addition to the previously published long list of what’s happening: Our area’s representative on the Seattle Public Schools board, Leslie Harris, tells WSB she’ll be at High Point Library for her next community conversation, 3-5 pm at High Point Library. Harris is also the board’s president and notes there’s much to talk about, so you’re invited to drop in – 3411 SW Raymond.

This year’s Grand Marshal is a West Seattleite, County Councilmember Joe McDermott. As reported here Thursday, the Northwest Seaport Alliance hasn’t finalized all the details of the new Terminal 5 lease package, so it postponed plans for managing members – port commissioners of Seattle and Tacoma – to vote on it next week. Now the new date is set: April 2nd, in a special 11:30 am meeting at the Sea-Tac Airport conference center.

West Seattle Crime Watch: 3 reader reports

Three reader reports and a reminder:

SUSPECTED LURING ATTEMPT: An employee in a business near Gatewood Elementary shared this via a parent who stopped in the store:

A white male of 5’5, wearing a plaid shirt and khaki pants, tried to lure two children off the bus to his car. He was showing muffins and goodies to get the kids to come with him. They did not go with him and notified their school immediately.

We haven’t found a police-report number yet. 6:28 PM UPDATE: See comments for more info – including the report #, 19-092718, if you have any info for police.

BURGLARY: From Annie, word of a burglary just after noon Thursday near 49th SW and SW Dawson. She shared security video showing two people:

They walk past the camera out front twice at exactly before the break-in happened and when they ran out of the house. They broke in around noon, knocked on the door and waited til my roommate didn’t answer to come in. They continued to try to get into her room when they found out she was locked in there before running out of the house without grabbing anything.

Police report # is 19-091345.

CAR BREAK-IN: From Shawn:

Just letting you know our car window was broken and appears car was prowled, likely last night at Holly & Fauntleroy. … Never had anything like this in 5+ years at our house!! We never leave anything important in it, so I have no idea what they were trying to get.

REMINDER: Your next chance to bring crime/safety concerns to local police is at next Tuesday’s West Seattle Crime Prevention Council meeting, 7 pm March 19th, Southwest Precinct (2300 SW Webster), with a guest speaker from the SPD 911 center.

BIZNOTE: Wallflower announces it’s closing this summer

IMG_4279 (1)(2016 WSB photo of Courtney at Wallflower during Junction Day of Giving)

Wallflower Custom Framing in The Junction will close when its lease ends this summer, its proprietor has announced:

With a heavy heart, I am announcing that after ten years in West Seattle, Wallflower will not renew its lease this year, and the shop will close at the end of June.

I am so grateful to every one of you who has had something (many things!) custom framed, purchased a photoframe, or collected a piece of art. This community is unbelievably supportive of its small businesses and I can’t ever thank you enough. I’ve been truly humbled by the success of this little store, and I’ve sincerely enjoyed getting to know all of you through your art, through conversation, through ArtWalk, or just walking by tossing a wave…you will all be sorely missed. I will be framing like mad right up until mid-June, and all custom framing will be 15% off as a final thank you. Photoframes, mirrors, and framed art for sale in the shop will be 50% off.

All my gratitude,
Courtney, Owner, Wallflower Custom Framing

Wallflower opened in the then-new Mural mixed-use building at 4735 42nd SW in 2009.

We’ve heard of one other potential event later today – anyone else?

ADDED: Thanks to Christine for the photo of Plant for the Planet youth leaders at the citywide rally at Cal Anderson Park – four of the five are from West Seattle, she notes:

SATURDAY MORNING MOVIE FOR CO-OP PRESCHOOLS: You can start the day at the Admiral Theater, 9:30 am:

South Seattle College Cooperative Preschools will be hosting a screening of “My Neighbor Totoro” at the Admiral Theater (to whom we are incredibly grateful for hosting the

Tickets will be available at the door for a suggested donation of $7 each or $25 for a family. Children under 1 are free. We are only able to accept cash or check at the door.

All proceeds go to support the Mary E. Phillips Scholarship Fund, making SSC Cooperative preschool affordable to all. SSC Co-op Preschools have locations throughout West Seattle (Alki, North Admiral, Lincoln Park, White Center, and SSC Campus) and we will have information about our preschools available at the event.

SATURDAY NIGHT PARTY FOR FAUNTLEROY CHILDREN’S CENTER: From Judy Pickens:

The 32nd annual dinner auction on Saturday, March 16, to benefit the Fauntleroy Children’s Center is a three-generation affair for the Nickels family.

“Moonlight Masquerade” will get under way at 5:30 pm in the Hall @ Fauntleroy. Find details and reserve your seat at fauntleroychildrenscenter.org/annual-auction.
