4:38 PM: Almost 3,300 customers are out of power as of moments ago in north West Seattle. We’re working to find out if this is related to police blocking off Avalon Way between Charlestown and Yancy, where SFD has an hour-old “wires down” call.
4:55 PM: We’re getting reports of restoration, at least for some. (added) The map shows it’s down to 483 homes/businesses.
5:07 PM: Those still out are close to the original “wires down” call on Avalon, where the southbound direction is about to reopen, while northbound remains closed. (added) SFD tells us at the scene that the “wires down” were the result of a pole fire; SCL is bringing in a new pole, so the northbound side of Avalon will likely remain closed at least a few hours.
(Reader photo – pole delivery)
8:03 PM: We went through the work zone (since uphill on Avalon, aka southbound, remains open), and the crews are still working with the new and replacement poles. Also note that the continuing outage has lights dark at the Avalon/Spokane/Harbor intersection, which means it’s an all-way stop.
8:28 PM: Other lights on Avalon are affected too – commenter KD says 35th/Avalon is still out.
11:07 PM: Not restored yet.
1:30 AM: Still out, and public-safety personnel just told dispatch that the SCL crew told them it might take another two hours.
5:30 AM: Commenters report power was restored just after 2:30.
ADDED 1 PM TUESDAY: As promised, we asked SCL about the cause. The reply from spokesperson Jenn Strang: “The cause was the center wire came loose from its head pin. When it came down, it contacted the cross arm and started the fire. We received a report of a smoking wire from Seattle Fire and were responding prior to the outage occurring. Our operations staff was able to quickly reduce the outage down to the smaller number affected. The crew deemed it necessary to replace the entire pole.”
–
11:39 PM: Police have told dispatch that a crash in the 1900 block of Harbor Avenue SW is blocking the road in both directions. No serious injuries reported but police say the three people in one of the cars fled the scene on foot. Officers are calling for two tow trucks as well as SDOT cleanup for a fluid spill and debris on the road.
12:26 AM: Police just told dispatch that the road has reopened. No further word on the occupants who fled the scene from one car, nor on whether the car was stolen.
9:58 PM: Seattle Police say northbound 35th SW is blocked at Rose in Gatewood because of a crash. No SFD medical response so far so apparently no serious injuries, but avoid the area for a while.
10:48 PM: Police just told dispatch that northbound 35th is open again.
6:01 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, September 1st.

More local students return to class today – the new school year starts at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic School and the Vashon Island School DistrictRead More
7:46 AM: Fire and police are at the scene of a crash that’s requiring someone to be extricated from a vehicle. This is at/near the north end of Delridge Way by the bridge. Updates to come.
7:50 AM: SFD medics are describing this as a vehicle hitting a West Seattle Bridge “pillar” at high speed and that the passenger who had to be cut out of the car has life-threatening injuries. … SFD says he is a man in his mid-20s. The driver got out of the car unassisted.
8:05 AM: A commenter says the Avalon entrance to the bridge is blocked. The logged address of the crash site is Fire Station 36 under the bridge – our crew is still en route so we haven’t seen the scene yet.
8:13 AM: Our crew just sent that photo from the scene. They explain the location as alongside the ramp up to the bridge from Avalon/Harbor, alongside the north side of Nucor – here’s another photo:
8:22 AM: Dispatch just told officers that Traffic Collision Investigation Squad detectives are on the way. … Dispatch is trying to find a better address to update the log (the initial address, 3600 23rd SW, as noted above, is the location of Fire Station 36, but this happened west of there). Both men people in the car were taken to the hospital, the passenger in critical condition, the driver less seriously hurt.
8:50 AM: Live video from the closest traffic camera – under the bridge at Avalon/Harbor/Spokane – shows vehicles are being allowed to turn onto the ramp.
11:51 AM: We don’t have an update on the passenger yet, but the driver is a 20-year-old man, SFD says, who was in stable condition when transported.
TUESDAY NIGHT: Still no official update but commenters identifying themselves as a friend and relative say the passenger has died.
WEDNESDAY MORNING: Police have just confirmed that via this SPD Blotter post. They say the passenger who died was a 16-year-old boy and that the 20-year-old driver “showed signs of impairment … and was arrested for (investigation of) vehicular homicide.”
7:40 AM: “Rescue extrication” response at north end of Delridge. Separate coverage shortly.
8:36 AM: As reported in that coverage, the logged address of the crash was Fire Station.36 – by Delridge’s north end – but the actual scene was to the west along the onramp from Avalon/Harbor.
8:50 AM: The closest traffic cam indicates the ramp is open.
9:16 AM: A crash is reported on Highland Park Way SW between the 1st Ave. S. Bridge and 2nd Ave. SW, involving a solid-waste truck and a pickup truck.

1:35 PM: Thanks for the tips. Some traffic interruptions continue on southbound 99 just south of the 1st Avenue South Bridge, and near Highland Park Way/2nd SW, because of what’s logged as a brush-fire response. Avoid the area for a while.
2:33 PM: Officers have just told dispatch that they’re reopening northbound West Marginal at the scene.
2:43 PM: And now they’re reopening everything else that was closed.
ADDED FRIDAY AFTERNOON: Readers wondered if this was related to an encampment, as some other nearby fires have been. According to SFD spokesperson David Cuerpo, who spoke with crews who were on scene, “There was not sufficient evidence that this brush fire was related to an encampment. The brush fire involved an area approx. half an acre in size. No injuries were reported.”

10:40 PM: That’s a framegrab from the SDOT traffic camera at Delridge/Orchard, looking south at a crash scene just outside the east side of the Southwest Precinct at Delridge/Webster. The crash is blocking the southbound bicycle lane and part of the southbound general-purpose traffic lane. So far we’ve heard police tell dispatch that one driver was involved and that she hit a utility pole, so they’ve summoned City Light, too.
12:24 AM: Traffic camera showed the scene just clearing with a flatbed tow truck taking away the damaged vehicle.

2:15 PM: Just a reminder if you missed it in our morning traffic roundup: Vice President Kamala Harris is in the area for another hour and a half or so, and that’s not the only reason to avoid I-5 – there’s also a collision on I-5 northbound at Michigan that’s led to some snarling both ways. As for the vice president, she’s reported to be at a fundraiser in Medina right now, after a speech in Georgetown, but will be headed back to Boeing Field for a scheduled 3:30-ish departure, and when the motorcade is in motion, that will again temporarily shut down traffic.
3 PM: The aforementioned collision has SB I-5 closed at Michigan. No word if that’ll result in a vice presidential detour getting back to Boeing Field.
3:30 PM: SB I-5 has reopened. And we have details of the incident from Bellevue PD via Twitter/X: One of their officers, while on detail because of the VP visit, fell off the Michigan ramp – an estimated 50- to 60-foot fall – but survived and was “conscious and alert” when taken to Harborview.
3:46 PM: Traffic advisory indicates the motorcade’s headed back this way now.
4:10 PM: WSDOT says highways have all reopened,
6:02 AM: Good morning! It’s Tuesday, August 15th.

VICE PRESIDENT’S VISIT
Vice President Kamala Harris visits Seattle for a few hours today. Her published schedule starts with 11:10 am arrival at Boeing Field, from which she heads to McKinstry in Georgetown for a noon speech; after that, it’s off to a campaign fundraiser (unannounced location), and her departure from Boeing Field is expected just after 3:30 pm.
