UPDATE: Shuttle-type bus breakdown backup on Sylvan Way

4:55 PM: Thanks to Sam for the tip. Traffic on Sylvan Way is problematic at the moment because what police described as a shuttle-type bus has broken down near Sylvan Heights Drive, and they have to get a tow truck to deal with it. Sam says drivers are turning around on the westbound side to “go back down the hill.”

5:15 PM: Tow truck just arrived so this may ease soon.

5:23 PM: Sam says uphill traffic is moving again and police just told dispatch that they’ve reopened the road.

UPDATE: Flipped-car crash on Highland Park Way hill

10:48 AM: SPD and SFD are headed for the bottom of the Highland Park Way hill, where the traffic camera (screengrab above) verifies a just-reported crash includes a flipped car. At least one other car is reported to be involved as well.

(Added: Reader photo, sent by Mary)

10:54 AM: Police and fire are there now. Uphill lanes are completely blocked and only one downhill lane is open. Officers just confirmed to dispatch that one other car and a bus were involved in the crash too.

11:10 AM: Two downhill lanes are open. Meantime, SFD closed out quickly, indicating no serious injuries.

11:47 AM: Crash scene is clear, all lanes of HP Way are open again.

UPDATE: Another incident reported near ‘the curve’ toward southwest end of westbound West Seattle Bridge

9:38 PM: SPD is arriving at the scene of another incident repoorted near “the curve” by the Walking On Logs/Welcome to West Seattle pullout, on this rainy night. No pole or other damage this time, police told dispatch.

9:38 PM: Photo added; it shows this was a pickup-truck driver hitting a parked box truck. No indication of serious injury – SFD left after only about 15 minutes.

CLOSURE ALERT: Travel on northbound I-5? Here’s what you need to know about ‘major construction’ ahead

I-5 has seen some construction closures in recent months, but things are about to get more serious, and it seems like time to share the full WSDOT explanation here too:

The largest active highway preservation effort in Washington state will enter its second year of construction beginning beginning the weekend of Jan. 9-12, weather permitting. This temporary full closure of northbound Interstate 5 in Seattle will allow crews to establish a work zone to perform important work on the Ship Canal Bridge. During the construction lane closures, the I-5 express lanes will only run northbound 24 hours a day.

Once the interstate reopens, travelers can expect months of partial lane closures as crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation work to preserve and extend the life of the bridge. Due to the time-intensive nature of removing the old roadway surface, completing structural repairs and placing new concrete, crews must establish a long-term work zone across the bridge. The work zone also helps safeguard the crews undertaking this work.

Leaders from WSDOT, Seattle Department of Transportation, Sound Transit and King County Metro emphasized their shared commitment on Tuesday, Jan. 6, to help keep people and goods moving safely and reliably through the region during construction.

“Preserving the I-5 Ship Canal Bridge is essential to a safe and reliable regional transportation system,” said Secretary of Transportation Julie Meredith. “Building on our success from 2025, we know we can manage the traffic impacts of four weeks of lane reductions with thoughtful planning. We’re asking everyone to consider choosing alternate routes, carpooling, adjusting travel times or using transit to help keep everyone moving.”

The Revive I-5: Ship Canal Bridge Preservation project is a multi-year effort that includes repairing and resurfacing the upper bridge deck, replacing aged expansion joints and improving drainage. In 2025, WSDOT started this project by completing early drainage improvements and repairs. In 2026 construction will focus on the northbound bridge deck and in 2027 the southbound bridge deck. The project is expected to be complete by the end of 2027.

During this work, close coordination between state, city and transit agencies helps minimize regional impacts and provide travelers with reliable alternatives. …

Construction closure details
Starting as early as 11:59 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 9, crews will close all lanes of northbound I-5 from I-90 to Northeast 45th Street to set up a work zone in the two left lanes of the Ship Canal Bridge. When northbound I-5 reopens Monday morning, Jan. 12, a two-lane reduction will be in place until early June. Revive I-5 work will pause and the work zone will be removed for FIFA World Cup matches in Seattle from June 8-July 10. All lanes will be open during the World Cup. After the World Cup matches in Seattle conclude, work will resume again with more long-term lane reductions through the end of 2026.

The weekend-long full closure for work zone set-up depends on dry weather to restripe lanes. That means if the weather is too rainy, crews will reschedule work for the following weekend.

Express lanes will operate ‘northbound only’ during 2026 Revive I-5 construction
During the construction lane closures, the I-5 express lanes will only run northbound 24 hours a day. Those traveling to or through Seattle may experience traffic delays as the express lanes will not run southbound like they typically do during the morning hours. Keeping express lanes northbound only allows WSDOT to balance the regional traffic system more effectively during this work.

WSDOT projects under the “Revive I-5” umbrella go as far back as 2018.

UPDATE: Flipped-car crash on eastbound West Seattle Bridge

(Added: Reader photo)

10:59 AM: Thanks for the tips. Emergency responders are on the scene of a flipped-car crash on the eastbound West Seattle Bridge. The EB bridge is down to one lane in the area. Updates to come.

11:07 AM: A second vehicle was involved, according to police’s call for two tow trucks plus this photo sent by a bus rider, who says:

A rollover crash right in front of my H-line bus on the West Seattle bridge (eastbound) … The bus driver stopped and helped the driver of the upside-down car get out.

11:11 AM: SFD is leaving, which clears the scene on the bridge traffic camera enough to see where this happened:

11:36 AM: Tow trucks and SDOT cleanup crews are there now. Police told dispatch two lanes are open at the scene. No indication that anyone was seriously hurt, but we’re following up with SFD.

12:04 PM: Still blocking the two inside lanes.

12:19 PM: The scene is now clear and all lanes are open. SFD tells us they treated one person, an 84-year-old woman, who was in stable condition and declined to be transported to a hospital. (We don’t know whether she was a driver or passenger, just that she was the only person SFD needed to check out.)

TRAFFIC ALERT: Utility work on westbound West Seattle Bridge by ‘the curve’

Thanks to the texter who sent that dashcam video along with an alert about the lane closure it shows, at “the curve” that’s been the location of more than a few crashes, toward the southwest end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge. We’re not finding an official traffic alert about it, but given the presence of at least one Seattle City Light truck, it could be work related to the crash the other night that brought down a pole at the pullout (we’ll check with SCL in the morning). In the meantime, if you’ll be headed that way, or know someone who will, caution is advised.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Olson Place crash

Thanks to Collin for the photo and this report from the east end of the Roxbury corridor: “Olson Place and Cambridge, 1-car accident blocking 1 lane going up the hill. No injuries but will need a tow truck.”

11:36 AM: If you’re heading east toward the east end of the Roxbury corridor, note that emergency responders are headed for what’s reported as a “rollover” on the county (eastbound) side of SW Roxbury at 5th SW [map].

11:41 AM: Thanks to Lisa for texting the photo, stuck in traffic at the scene. She reports a bystander said everyone’s OK.

12:49 PM: Thanks to another texter for sending the wider view above. We have less over-the-air info on this since it’s being handled by the King County Sheriff’s Office rather than SPD, but we did catch that a tow truck was on scene as of about half an hour ago, cleaning up debris and a fluid spill as well as handling the flipped car.
