TRAFFIC ALERTS: Three West Seattle notes for this weekend

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

Whenever we get advance word of road work and other things likely to affect traffic, we include them in our morning traffic roundups (published around 6 am weekdays). But the following three bits of information are all new since this morning’s roundup:

THE AVALON/YANCY ‘CLOSURE’: A reader told us about the signboard saying Avalon/Yancy [map] would be closed all day Saturday. We asked SDOT about it; they said it wasn’t their project, so they pointed us to AA Asphalting. A spokesperson there clarified that this is not a full road closure – there will be officers and/or flaggers there to get drivers/riders/walkers/etc. around the work that will be done. SDOT meantime verified that this work will affect the east (Yancy) side of the intersection.

REPAVING ON OLSON: While we were communicating with SDOT, they dug up word of an all-weekend repaving project on Olson Place SW, near Arrowhead Gardens:

Olson Pl SW between 1st Ave S and 2nd Ave SW [map]
Saturday July 26th and Sunday July 27th, 2025
8 AM – 5 PM
*Weather permitting

• SDOT will remove and repave the top 2 inches of the street at the location listed above.
o The project will connect to previous SDOT paving projects on 1st Ave S and Myers Way S.
o SDOT constructed new curb ramps at Myers Way S and 2nd Ave SW in support of these paving projects.

• Sidewalk access will not be impacted.

• Traffic Impacts:

o The travel lanes on Olson Pl SW will be reduced and shifted during work hours.
o Access between 2nd Ave SW and Olson Pl SW will be closed during work hours.
▪ SDOT will have a flagger at the intersection and will allow access to the extent possible, but only intermittent access will be allowed.
▪ Access between 2nd Ave SW and Myers Way S will not be affected.
o All streets will be fully open during non-work hours.

Here’s the official notice.

HARBOR AVENUE’S TORCHLIGHT PARADE CONNECTION: Thanks to Kathy for sending word that the annual no-parking signs are up along a stretch of Harbor Avenue in advance of Seafair Torchlight Parade entries heading to and from a parking area at the port. We haven’t been by to see the signage yet but the parade is tomorrow night on the newly overhauled downtown waterfront, and in some years past there’s been a convoy across the West Seattle low bridge related to this.

There’s also a fuel leak that has to be cleaned up. Tow trucks are on the way for the motorcycle and at least one vehicle that’s reported to have been involved.

ROAD WORK UPDATE: Here’s what’s happening at 60th and Admiral

We’ve been mentioning in our daily traffic roundups that parking restrictions are in place for the next three weeks for a stretch of Admiral Way west of 59th SW. We asked SDOT for specifics, and here’s what they tell us today:

This work is being conducted by our concrete crew and is a curb ramp install on all four corners of SW Admiral Way & 60th Ave SW, with street panel replacement adjacent to ramps on 60th Ave SW. Expect daily closures on 60th Ave SW at this intersection up until August 15.

When we went by a bit earlier today, the closure was on 60th on the south side of the intersection, and part of the eastbound bike lane was blocked (as shown in our photo).

VIDEO: Scenes from West Seattle Summer Fest Eve 2025!

5:16 PM: The Junction is the place to be, starting now and continuing until Sunday night – West Seattle Summer Fest is officially Friday-Sunday but the streets are closed now for festival setup, plus early sidewalk-café activity, and it’s West Seattle Art Walk + The Art of Music night, all combining for Summer Fest Eve. Buses are rerouted too. We’re headed that way soon for updates!

6:25 PM: One of the sights you’ll see in Junction streets right now – stilt walkers! Or if you’d rather just watch the festival setup, wander north of SW Oregon, where the Summer Fest main stage is taking shape:

We found out from Junction Association executive director Chris Mackay that if you wander a bit further north, you’ll find out Itto’s is cooking paella tonight! Meanwhile, lots of wandering going on:

And be sure to duck into the West Seattle Art Walk venues, too – we photographed West Seattle watercolorist Carrie Scroggins at Jet City Labs:

(Jet City has DJs all festival long, tomorrow through Sunday!) We’ve seen two bands, too – Aurora Ave is rocking the KeyBank Plaza corner at California/Alaska:

And the St. Bees Duo is at John L. Scott (4445 California SW) with some nostalgia.

They’re one of the five Art of Music acts – and The Junction is hosting bonus music tonight too (like Aurora Ave!). We’re heading back out to see what else is up ….

8:38 PM: More scenes from tonight – Golden Hart at Great American Diner and Bar, part of The Art of Music:

Noticed a line for Husky Deli ice cream:

On the same block, Mashiko‘s streetside booth had a list of what they’ll be selling, including shave ice:

Poggie Tavern was decked inside and out with jellyfish:

Speaking of food and drink, remember it’s on SW Alaska WEST of California this year, and the parking lot behind KeyBank will have space for you to sit and enjoy your food/beverage:

The Kid Zone, meantime, is on Alaska EAST of California, where these colorful cords are awaiting their role in setting up the inflatables (you can buy tickets online in advance):

The festival runs 1 to 8 pm Friday (music to 11), 10 am to 8 pm Saturday (music to 11), and 10 am to 5 pm Sunday. We’ll be there for continuous coverage all 24+ hours of the festival – see you in The Junction!

UPDATE: Crash at 16th/Sullivan sends one person to hospital

10:01 PM: Seattle Fire has a big response headed to a crash at 16th SW/SW Sullivan – firefighters have told dispatch they’ll have to extricate someone from the crashed vehicle.

10:03 PM: The person is now out so they’re downsizing the response. But 16th is closed, Thistle to Cloverdale, and that’s expected to last a while.

(WSB photo)

10:48 PM: Photo added. And as commenters remind us, 16th just south of the scene is marked for speed humps/cushions that SDOT is about to install. (We’ve been awaiting SDOT info after a tip just before the holiday weekend.)

ADDED MONDAY MORNING: The 29-year-old driver was taken to a hospital by private ambulance, indicating his injuries were not life-threatening. As commenters note, he hit parked cars; SPD called for tow trucks for three vehicles in all, including the driver’s.

ROAD WORK ALERT: Next round of investigation for Fauntleroy ferry-dock intersection project

(2024 WSF concept for Fauntleroy Way signalized intersection)

Heads up for more road work to get ready for this fall’s project to add a signal where Fauntleroy Way SW intersects with the ferry dock, in advance of the dock replacement/expansion later this decade. Two weeks ago, crews did drilling at the site; next week, they’ll do “potholing,” explained as “using specialized equipment to create small holes in the ground to verify the location, depth and condition of underground utilities.” The work is set for Tuesday and Wednesday, July 8 and 9, 9 am-7 pm. Here’s the official notice. Questions? There’s a construction hotline, 206-402-8070. The announcement was circulated along with news of a date for the terminal project’s final Community Advisory Group meeting, now set for 6 pm August 6, online. The public will be welcome to attend; watch this page for a registration link later this summer.
