VIDEO: See how 1254 Alki Avenue SW house was moved by truck and barge

(WSB photos/video)

12:24 AM: Five houses were originally on the site that will be redeveloped into a ~40-condominium project by Vibrant Cities (formerly SolTerra, which originally planned an apartment project). One was moved off the site last January; another is being moved right now; the remaining three will be demolished. We’re here to cover the move, with the renowned house rescuers of Nickel Bros set to pull this house off 1254 Alki and truck it almost half a mile southeast to a barge at Don Armeni Boat Ramp, as was done with the 1262 Alki house nine months ago. Its new owner says it’s headed for Anderson Island.

The crews prepped the site days earlier but just rolled out of Don Armeni after midnight to start setting up for the move.

12:57 AM: The house’s new owner says it’s one of two that he’s buying and moving via Nickel Bros. The other one, taken from a site in Poulsbo, is already on the barge, which he says is scheduled to dock on the island Tuesday. Also here, Vibrant Cities’ co-owners James Wong – who has West Seattle roots – and Ming Fung. They tell us the condo project will likely start construction early next year and will be called Infinity.

1:59 AM: The move is expected to start shortly. Alki Ave will be blocked for a while east of here.

2:30 AM: The house is off the lot and headed down the street, with the help of not only the Nickel Bros crews but also pilot vehicles. We’re headed back to HQ and will add video and a few more photos from there.

3:59 AM: Here are two angles of video as the house left the site:

Local videographer Mark Jaroslaw, who has been recording the operation, reports that it hit a temporary snag: “The house slowly rounded the corner onto Harbor Ave, but was forced to halt in the 1200 block because someone failed to anticipate a low-hanging utility line. The crew tried lowering the load to no avail. So, they improvised. They laid a path of plywood sheets across the park grass, allowing the truck to detour off the street into the Armeni lot. The house was secured at 3:30.” We’ll be checking its status in daylight.

12:24 PM: Thanks to Mark for sharing his video including the house being loaded onto the barge, followed by the sailaway:

Anderson Island, the house’s destination, is Puget Sound’s southernmost island.

TRAFFIC ALERT: NB Highway 99 reopens

October 20, 2018 3:28 pm
|    Comments Off on TRAFFIC ALERT: NB Highway 99 reopens
 |   Alaskan Way Viaduct | West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

From WSDOT:

The final scheduled inspection of the Alaskan Way Viaduct is complete and State Route 99 northbound is now open through Seattle – with the exception of the Royal Brougham Way on-ramp. Construction crews working for the Washington State Department of Transportation expect to open the on-ramp at Royal Brougham Way by 7 p.m. tonight, Oct. 20.

Southbound lanes of the Alaskan way Viaduct/SR 99 remain closed all weekend for construction and will reopen by 5 a.m. Monday, Oct. 22. The southbound highway is closed between the Battery Street Tunnel and South Spokane Street.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Friday watch; Highway 99 closure reminder; downtown gas leak

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

7:03 AM: Good morning! No transit alerts or outbound traffic incidents reported so far.

HIGHWAY 99 CLOSURE REMINDER: The weekend closure is in 2 phases – SB starting 9 tonight and lasting all weekend, NB starting at 6 am Saturday and end by 5 pm that day.

9:50 AM: Sorry to be late catching onto this. A gas leak has caused closures downtown in the 1st/Columbia/Cherry vicinity. Some of this seems to be easing, according to what we’re hearing on police radio, at least for pedestrians in the area.

9:59 AM: There’s also a gas-leak call at Holden/Highland Park Way. Apparently not major as two of the three dispatched units have been dismissed, but please let us know if you are seeing otherwise.

10:20 AM: A downtown update from police radio – while sidewalks in the area are being opened, 1st will remain closed to traffic between Columbia and Yesler. 2nd is being reopened.

10:50 AM: 1st also has reopened between Yesler and Marion, per SDOT.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Thursday watch; weekend Highway 99 closure

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

HIGHWAY 99 CLOSURE REMINDER: The details of this weekend’s closure have changed – while the SB side will be closed starting at 9 pm Friday as planned, scheduled to last all weekend, the NB closure plan has been shortened, to start at 6 am Saturday and end by 5 pm that day.

UPDATE: SW Genesee closed for 6+ hours after steel balls spill from truck

4:53 PM: Thanks for the tips! Those are forged-steel balls and bags full of them fell out of a truck on the SW Genesee hill east of Avalon, which is currently closed westbound as a result from 26th on up. We’d advise avoiding the area both ways for a while.

4:59 PM: Our crew at the scene says that these are heavy items – check the inscription on the bags:

So SDOT is trying to figure out how to clean up the ones that spilled. Some have rolled into vehicles parked in the area.

7:11 PM: Cleanup is under way – and both sides are blocked, we’re told – thanks for this texted photo:

Your co-publishers are embedded at community events tonight, so we appreciate an update (in comments preferably) if you notice the road has reopened before we get word of it!

8:50 PM: Just went by. Still closed.

10:06 PM: Scanner traffic indicates getting the truck off the hill will involve some backing up and potentially a temporary Delridge closure, so heads up on that.

11:23 PM: After more than six hours, the truck and balls are gone. We’ll do our best to follow up on whether any citation was issued.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Wednesday watch; weekend 99 closure reminder

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

7:33 AM: Good morning! No transit alerts or outbound incidents from West Seattle so far.

WEEKEND VIADUCT CLOSURE: A reminder again, Highway 99 is scheduled to close in both directions this coming weekend (late Friday, October 19th, through early Monday, October 22nd) for the Alaskan Way Viaduct’s final planned inspection, plus some tunnel-transition-related work.

7:51 AM: Problem in the right eastbound lane on the bridge high-rise.

8:22 AM: SDOT says that scene is clear.

9:04 AM: Medic response at 41st/Morgan and texter tells us a motorcycle is involved. On our way to check.

UPDATE: Car-on-side crash in Fairmount Ravine

3:24 PM: Thanks to Ben for the photo and word of that car-on-side crash in Fairmount Ravine under the Admiral Way Bridge. No SFD dispatch is logged for it, so apparently no injuries, and as shown in the photo, a tow truck was already on scene when he sent the photo a short time ago, but avoid the road – a popular cut-through from east Alki to Admiral – for a while.

3:52 PM: Just went through to check; the road’s clear.

TRAFFIC/TRANSIT TODAY: Tuesday watch

(SDOT MAP with travel times/video links; is the ‘low bridge’ closed? LOOK HERE)

WEEKEND VIADUCT CLOSURE: Time to start reminding you that Highway 99 is scheduled to close in both directions next weekend (late Friday, October 19th, through early Monday, October 22nd) for the Alaskan Way Viaduct’s final planned inspection.

7:42 AM: Just crossed the bridge on a downtown errand. Standard pattern (backups in the 99 exit lane, and the leftbound lane starting before 1st). Sky’s absolutely clear this morning.
