West Seattle, Washington
06 Monday
1:26 PM: According to radio communication, southbound California Avenue SW is currently blocked in the 3200 block as SFD handles a natural-gas leak. They haven’t yet found the source but believe they’ll be able to clear it via ventilation.
1:53 PM: WSB’s Christopher Boffoli reports California is now open both ways. (We have added a photo he sent.)

7:17 AM: Good morning! No incidents reported in our area so far.
METRO TODAY: Again today, buses are on “reduced weekday” service.
9:38 AM: Getting downtown right now is close to impossible. We are trying to get to a City Hall briefing on Viaduct-to-Tunnel mobility and are stuck on the 4th Avenue S. exit ramp, just discovering the “rescue extrication” call that’s blocking 4th at Spokane.

6:43 AM: Good morning! The holidays are over but holiday vacations aren’t – school isn’t back in session for most (if not all) until next Monday, for example.
METRO TODAY: Again today, buses are on “reduced weekday” service.
#REALIGN99 COUNTDOWN: This Friday night (January 4th) at 10 pm, the on- and off-ramps in the stadium zone close — first big changes, one week before the Alaskan Way Viaduct’s permanent closure. We’ll be covering media briefings each of the next two days, so if you have lingering questions, ask (in comments or text/email) so we can seek answers!

6:59 AM: Good morning! We’ve checked around – so far, no incidents reported in our area.
METRO TODAY: Running again today on “reduced weekday” service.
METRO TONIGHT: Reminder that Metro will be free to ride 7 pm tonight until 4 am tomorrow.
8:41 PM: Thanks for the tip – the inside eastbound lane of the West Seattle Bridge is closed for a stretch east of the Fauntleroy entrance because of yet another crash knocking the jersey barrier out of place. No SFD dispatch, which indicates no serious injuries.
9:04 PM: Per scanner, the lane has reopened.

6:50 AM: Good morning! We’re back on traffic watch. Just checked – no incidents in our area.
METRO: Running on “reduced weekday” service.
WATER TAXI: Reminder that Spirit of Kingston is scheduled to continue on the West Seattle run
FERRY: Reminder that Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth is on a two-boat schedule.
8:15 AM: We’re covering this separately but also noting here – avoid Sylvan Way through High Point, as a big SFD/SPD response is dealing with a crash near the cemetery.
8:35 AM: As noted in our coverage, Sylvan will be closed for some time because the Traffic Collision Investigation Squad has been sent to the scene.

7:11 AM: Good morning! No traffic incidents or transit alerts in our area so far. Metro is on “reduced weekday” service.
1:14 PM: Thanks for the tips and photos – that crash is blocking a lane on the westbound West Seattle Bridge toward the Fauntleroy end. No word of major injuries, but the texter who sent that photo says the barrier is damaged, which usually means extra time to rearrange it, at the very least.
1:45 PM: Per radio communications, sounds like it’ll be a while before the barrier is replaced. SDOT says the inside eastbound lane is blocked as well as the inside westbound lane.
3:45 PM: SDOT says all’s clear now.
Reminder – as previewed here on Friday, the tower crane at 4754 Fauntleroy Way SW (The Foundry) is coming down today, and that’s narrowed the traffic lanes between SW Alaska and SW Edmunds – one lane each way.
The contractor said in the notice to nearby residents and businesses that they hope to be done by 5 pm. This crane’s removal leaves 2749 California SW – the mixed-use project with a new PCC Community Markets (WSB sponsor) store and Luna Apartments – as the only current West Seattle project using one.
Thanks to Brian for sharing the announcement circulated in the area: One of West Seattle’s two remaining tower cranes is set to come down tomorrow (Saturday, December 22nd). The operation to remove the crane at 4754 Fauntleroy Way SW (The Foundry), almost a year after it went up, will start well before sunrise, with traffic control set to begin in the 5 am hour and dismantling to begin after a 7 am safety meeting. They hope to have it all complete by 5 pm. Once this is gone, the only remaining tower crane at a West Seattle project will be the one at the PCC Community Markets (WSB sponsor) and Luna Apartments site in Admiral.

NEW SERVICE STARTS: Today is the first day that Ride2 is serving part of West Seattle, as announced last week. Here’s how it works, including where and when.
8:09 AM: Thanks to the texter who sent this pic of a Ride2 van on standby in North Delridge:
If you try it – today or someother time soon – we’d be interested in hearing from you.

6:53 AM: Good morning! No traffic incidents or transit alerts for our area so far.
WEATHER ALERT DOWNGRADED: It’s now a “wind advisory” for 1-7 pm.
If you need to get between Admiral and Alki, you’ll have to find a route other than California Way [map] until that tree’s cleared. The photo came in via text right after we heard the blockage mentioned on police radio; the texter had just called it in. This is a relatively common spot for tree trouble, even without wind (that’s still hours away).

7:11 AM: Good morning. Trouble at the east end of the eastbound bridge – a crash partly blocking the ramp to southbound I-5.
7:39 AM: As commenter NH pointed out, the 56 was skipped last hour – Metro’s alert was almost an hour after the fact.
7:47 AM: SDOT says the bridge-ramp crash scene is now clear.
7:57 AM: Reminder about tonight’s Triangle Route Task Force meeting, 4:30-7 pm at Fauntleroy Church (9140 California SW), focused on proposed change in Fauntleroy-Vashon-Southworth ferry schedule – here’s the new revision proposal.

8:24 AM: Stalled vehicle blocking 1 eastbound lane on the bridge by Delridge.
9 AM: Trouble on NB 99 – Seneca closed at 1st for “energency utility repairs.” Metro is rerouting.
Thanks for the tip about a crash this past hour in the 6500 block of West Marginal Way SW (map). Seattle Fire reports extricating one person from a wrecked vehicle; its units have since all cleared the scene.

10:09 AM: Thanks for the tip. Unannounced “road work” is closing two lanes on a significant section of the eastbound bridge, so if you have to head out, give yourself extra time.
10:51 AM: Tipster Lora sends this photo of where the crew is working:
And we have since found a brief mention of it on the SDOT “On the Move” blog – described as “generally between 8 am and 5 pm … West Seattle Freeway – Helping to complete small improvements, with various traffic impacts.”
12:50 PM: As noted by commenter Onion and tweeted by SDOT, this work appears to be done.

WEEKEND RAMP CLOSURE: From WSDOT: “SR 99 northbound on-ramp from South Royal Brougham Way will be closed for paving. Closure runs 5 a.m. Saturday until noon on Sunday.”
7:39 AM: Another Metro alert – the 7:47 am Route 57 won’t run.
