TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Windy Tuesday morning

7:45 AM: Thanks for the tips. Two notes: Explorer West Middle School (WSB sponsor) is in that 89-customer outage zone east of Arbor Heights and currently hoping to open at 10 am. Meantime, there’s a new outage, largest yet, on Pigeon Point and in North Delridge, 1,376 customers. Here’s a screengrab of the Seattle City Light map:

9:20 AM: The Pigeon Point/North Delridge outage is resolved.

10:40 AM: As noted in comments, East Marginal/99 is blocked by downed lines. (added) Readers are also saying access to the West Seattle Bridge from SB 99 is blocked – you’ll be rerouted to the low bridge.

11:11 AM: We’ll keep updating here as needed until we start a new afternoon report at noon.

Earlier:

6:25 AM: Good morning. It’s Tuesday, January 9th.

WINDY WEATHER

We’re still under a Wind Advisory alert until 10 pm. The wind roared in late last night and took down some trees – here’s our early-am coverage (thanks again to everyone who sent photos). We don’t have updates on whether any of those trees have been cleared yet; the one at Marine View Drive/104th is the only one that got an overnight advisory – please let us know if you happen onto any others. Showers are also in the forecast, high in the mid-40s. Today’s sunrise will be at 7:56 am, and the sun will set at 4:36 pm.

POWER OUTAGES

Here’s the City Light map. As of right now, the only notable outage we’ve had in this area all night is affecting 89 customers, between north Arbor Heights and White Center. Outside the SCL coverage area, Puget Sound Energy has more than 23,000 customers out – at one point that included much of Vashon Island, but that appears to be down to some spot outages.

TRANSIT NOTES

Water Taxi today – No weather effects reported so far. Check the real-time map if you’re wondering where the boat is.

Metro today – No weather effects reported in our area so far; check advisories here.

Tree falls on greenway in North Delridge

Thanks to those who have texted and emailed about that tree, toppled onto the northbound side of the 26th Avenue SW neighborhood greenway on the west side of Delridge Community Center. Neighbor Derek says the city has been notified, and notes that this isn’t the first to fall in that spot – another came down in May 2022. (Worth noting with wind in the forecast – if a tree falls onto a street or sidewalk, you can report it to SDOT at 206-684-ROAD, after-hours at 206-386-1218.)

ROAD-WORK ALERT: Next phase of Highland Park Way/Holden permanent-signal installation

(Highland Park Way/Holden pole installation last Wednesday – photo by Kay Kirkpatrick)

Another SDOT alert for people traveling in the Highland Park Way/Holden intersection vicinity – the next phase of the installing the permanent traffic signal:

We recently installed new metal traffic signal poles at the Highland Park Way SW and SW Holden St intersection. We will now add the mast arms, which are cross bars that attach to the poles and extend out over the street. These mast arms will hold the new permanent traffic signals.

This work is scheduled for the week of January 8, though that could shift based on weather and crew availability. Our work hours are from 7 AM – 4 PM and the installation process and other related work should take about three days.

Alternating traffic lanes will be closed during installation, but there will always be one lane open for cars to get through. There will also be temporary sidewalk closures and detour routes for people walking.

The permanent signal replaces the cable-suspended lights that were installed shortly after the March 2020 West Seattle Bridge shutdown started overwhelming the intersection with detour traffic.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Crash on westbound West Seattle Bridge

Police were dispatched to this crash on the westbound West Seattle Bridge right after we received this photo from a texter, who describes the location as “just before 99 onramp.” No report of injuries so far.

ROAD-WORK ALERT: Highland Park Way/Holden signal-pole installation ahead

(WSB photo, March 2020)

Almost four years ago – days after the West Seattle Bridge’s sudden shutdownSDOT hurriedly put up a “temporary” traffic signal at Highland Park Way and Holden, after that already-busy intersection was quickly overrun with detour traffic. SDOT promised the signal eventually would become permanent, since a “safety project” was in the works for that intersection anyway. This week, one of the final steps – pole installation. Here’s the alert:

This week, we will install new metal traffic signal poles at the Highland Park Way SW and SW Holden St intersection. This is part of the process to replace the existing temporary traffic signal with a more durable, permanent one.

When

This work is scheduled for Wednesday, January 3 and Thursday, January 4 from 7 AM – 4 PM. This timeframe could shift based on weather and crew availability.

What to Expect

Alternating traffic lanes will be closed during installation, but there will always be one lane open for cars to get through. There may also be temporary sidewalk closures. This is not particularly noisy work, but if you live or work in the area, you may hear construction equipment running and some beeping when crews are backing up equipment.

Crash near southwest end of westbound West Seattle Bridge
