WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: West Side Artists studio tour, day 2

Not planning to spend the next few hours watching the Mariners, Storm, or Seahawks? Day 2 of the West Side Artists studio tour continues until 4 pm. We visited one stop Saturday; today, we have photos from another stop, sent by Kelly Lyles:

In addition to her work, she’s hosting artists Bill Gravengood and Rickie Wolfe. Even if you just drive by, there’s something to see.

She’s at 5029 26th SW. Here’s the full tour map – again, it’s free, self-guided, all stops have outdoor displays, and they’re open until 4 pm today.

POWER OUTAGE: Southeast West Seattle pocket back on

Around 1:30 am, power went out for more than 6,000 customers, mostly in North Highline and Burien, but including a pocket at the east end of the Roxbury corridor, mostly along Olson Place.

(Thanks to Collin for the screengrab)

Within about two hours, all but 40 customers were back on – but not the southeast West Seattle pocket. Seattle City Light says they’re finally back on after about 10 hours. We’ll be following up tomorrow on the outage’s ecact cause.

BIZNOTE: Fogue Gallery adds 2 more West Seattle artists

Something else you can do today – visit Fogue Gallery (WSB sponsor)(on Sundays, it’s open noon-5 pm). Fogue just announced the addition of two more local artistd:

Fogue™ Gallery West Seattle announces the addition of West Seattle locals Steffanie Lorig and Kevin Ducoing as permanent members of the Gallery. “Connecting local artists and art to our community enriches our environment and feeds the soul,” said Patti Curtis, Owner and Founder of Fogue™.

Steffanie Lorig has explored many different aspects of the creative arts—from painting to writing children’s books to designing brands to illustrating. She is an award-winning designer and founded social enterprise, Art with Heart, an organization dedicated to helping children in crisis through the power of creativity, helping over 155,000 children worldwide. Lorig has eleven books to her credit and outside her design and consulting business, and leads workshops that help individuals tap into their lost creative confidence.

For Kevin Ducoing, painting has always been his primary form of communication, as a child and into his adult life. Ducoing moved to Seattle in 1991, attended the Art Institute of Seattle, and was profoundly influenced by the teachings of Bill Cumming. Kevin paints mostly in acrylics, but also employs mediums such as charcoal, sand, and latex paint. He stretches his own canvases and adds a textural component to them with the application of wrinkled paper adhered to the surface, conveying additional depth to the painting’s story.

Fogue™ Gallery provides a community of artists over age 50 and patrons, of any age, to share, support and honor creativity. Providing a venue that showcases art that is relevant, powerful, and vibrant, expressing an ageless life. Fogue Artists are not just turning the page on cultural perceptions of aging; they are rewriting the book.

Fogue is at 4130 California SW, on the north edge of The Junction.

FOOTBALL: Another big win for West Seattle High School

The West Seattle High School Wildcats ran onto the field at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex tonight as an undefeated team, and that’s how they left it, with a 56-7 victory over the Kent Meridian HS Royals. #2, junior Elijah Brady, led the scoring tonight with four touchdowns.

His first one was less than a minute into the game.

Just a minute after that, the Royals got their one and only TD, and the score was fleetingly close, 8-7. But less than a minute and a half later, the Wildcats started pulling away, first with another Brady TD, then with the first of two touchdowns by #8, junior Mason Kallinger:

Second-quarter scoring included point-after kicks by #20, sophomore Kalei Scott:

Also in the photo above is #3, sophomore Bo Gionet, who snagged an interception with 1:44 to go in the first half. Second-quarter TDs were by Brady, Kallinger, and #31, senior Casey Maxwell. At halftime, head coach Jeff Scott‘s team was up 42-7.

The WSHS Cheer Squad performed at halftime:

The second half opened a lot like the first – a TD by Brady, just a minute and a half in, after a pass by #9, junior Axel Johnson.

Shortly thereafter, an interception by #4, junior Roman Centioli, set the stage for the Wildcats’ last touchdown, by #7, senior Will Godwin. No scoring in the fourth quarter, so 56-7 is how it ended. WSHS is now 3-0, and on the road next week, at Bishop Blanchet, 7 pm Friday (October 1st).

YOU CAN HELP: Crowdfunding for White Center’s fire-damaged Huong Xua Deli

(WSB/WCN photo, September 13th)

Less than two weeks after the 3-alarm fire that destroyed the closed Locker Room in downtown White Center, its neighbor to the north, Huong Xua Deli, is still struggling to recover from damage. (Our photo above shows what it looked like inside hours after the fire.) So their neighbors to the north, Full Tilt Ice Cream proprietors Justin Cline and Ann Magyar, have launched a crowdfunding page for community donations to help Huong Xua reopen. The page features this message from the deli’s owners:

My name is Kevin Bui and my wife is Phuong Nguyen. I came to the US when I was young. Growing up, I didn’t have that many opportunities and wealth. I had to work to support me and my family. Even through the struggle, our culture brings happiness and everybody together. That is why I wanted to open a small business to share some cultural foods such as Bánh Mì, Bún Bò Huế, thịt Heo Quay (Roasted Pork) and many more foods. When we inherited the business from the previous owners, everything was still the same but got slower from the pandemic. Not too long ago, our Roasted Pork Sandwich got rated #1 as the best Bánh Mì in the Puget Sound from The Seattle Times. I could say this was a blessing. Our business got more customers coming from all over the state. Everything was going well until a fire that was spread to our Deli. There were 3 fires that happened in a span of 5 months, but this time, Hương Xưa Deli was affected and damaged by the water and fire retardant. Our friendly neighbor from Full Tilt, started this fundraiser to help us rebuild our deli. Our family’s income depends on this business. Anything will help, thank you all for your support, I hope we can rebuild a new Deli as soon as possible located in the spot where we are right now to serve to our lovely community in White Center.

You can donate by going here.

P.S. Bizzarro Italian Café, south of the Locker Room, remains closed too (their Wallingford location remains open). King County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Sgt. Tim Meyer told us that investigators believe “smoking material” started the fire, as was the case with the April fire that closed the Locker Room.

BIZNOTE: Goodnight Pilates and Muscle Activation now open in north Morgan Junction

One of West Seattle’s newest businesses is now open at 5904 California SW: Goodnight Pilates and Muscle Activation. Proprietor Carrie Goodnight is occupying half the space that used to be DeSautel Chiropractic (now at 6553 California SW under the name Resolve Chiropractic.) Goodnight tells WSB, “After nearly 20 years of teaching Pilates (13 of them in West Seattle), I have expanded my skill set to include Muscle Activation Techniques.” She says combining Pilates with MAT (explained here) is a “powerful combination.” The new studio offers one-on-one lessons and bodywork, by appointment.

READER REPORT: 45th/Charlestown collision, and ongoing safety concerns

The report and photo are from Kelsey:

So many accidents and near misses at this corner in this school zone near Madison Middle. Every single day. Desperately needs a 4-way stop. Today it was a police car pulling out in front of a car (his fault, he acknowledged). No injuries.

Since most “minor” accidents aren’t reported, it is not seen by SDOT as a problem corner. Spend one day here and you will know. Especially worse now during the week, when West Seattle Elementary kids are heading to Schmitz Park [Elementary].

Time to look into this more seriously before someone is seriously hurt.

This happened just after 2:30 this afternoon. The intersection is one block east of the top of the steep Charlestown hill

Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex scoreboard now honors namesake

If you’re going to the West Seattle High School football game tonight vs. Kent Meridian, you’ll see that new feature at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex – the stadium’s full name is now on its scoreboard. The photo is from Mr. Cantu’s friend Doree Fazio-Young, who says the signage was installed this week and that the official dedication is expected next month; she also says West Seattle muralist Desmond Hansen is painting a portrait of Mr. Cantu for his memorial garden. Mr. Cantu, the stadium’s longtime grounds manager, died in 2018 at age 51; this past spring, the School Board approved naming the complex in his honor.

WEST SEATTLE WEEKEND SCENE: Life-saving dodgeball @ Riverview

(WSB photos)

Dennis Williams Jr. was all smiles as 15 dodgeball teams got ready to play in the On Blast! tournament he’s leading at the lower playfield in Riverview right now.

This is all about saving lives – raising money for research into childhood cancer.

Dennis’s 5-year-old son Isaac was diagnosed with stage 4 high-risk neuroblastoma when he was just a year and a half old. Isaac wad treated by Seattle Children’s Hospital for the next 15 months. Dennis says, “We are eternally indebted to Seattle Children’s and every child who comes behind Isaac.” Doctors from Children’s are there today to support the benefit – Dr. Navin Pinto and Dr. Julie Park.

They’re raising money because, Dennis says, “Only 4% of government funding goes to pediatric cancer research, so we have to do more to increase the odds of success for our kids.”

Prizes today include classic Topps cards:

You are invited to go to Riverview (7226 12th SW) while the tournament continues until 3 pm – DJ Top Spin is spinning, and there are treats to buy – and you’re also welcome to donate to the cause here.

WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: 2 thefts – wheelchair-accessible van; fat-tire bike

Two thefts in West Seattle Crime Watch:

WHEELCHAIR-ACCESSIBLE VAN STOLEN: Brian‘s sister needs this van to get around; it was taken in Admiral:

Our wheelchair-accessible van was stolen from in front of our house on 9/22 around 5:22 am. We live on SW Stevens in between 46th and 47th. Someone got dropped off by someone else who appears to be driving a pickup truck. They immediately go into the van and drive away. We also noticed afterward that we are missing one of two keys, and we realize this is probably not a coincidence. However, the bottom line is that the van is missing and it’s the only way my sister, who has Cerebral Palsy, can get around. We have no suspects. We can’t imagine knowing anyone that would do this to us. I can’t even imagine a stranger stealing a wheelchair van. It’s just so wrong. It’s a black 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan with a side ramp on the passenger side. The back has a row of seats taken out so you can roll a person in a wheelchair into it and strap the chair down. I can see how it would be tempting for a lot of people to steal as you could use it to haul stuff or even sleep in it. We just want the van back.

The van was last seen heading east on Stevens. Plate number (as shown in the photo) BMA7685. Call 911 if you see it.

BIKE STOLEN: Joe‘s 2009 Surly Rat Ride bike was taken Friday near 35th and Morgan:

Here’s the specs:
Make: Surly
Model: Rat Ride 1×1=11 (see non-ebike version photo)
Color: All black
E-bike conversion kit: CYC (see photo)
Battery: Frame mounted
Seatpost: Thompson Masterpiece
Saddle: Brooks

Joe is offering a reward. If you find it, let us know and we’ll connect you.

‘River for who? River for all!’ Rallying for, and over, the Duwamish

(WSB photos)

As changes in the Duwamish River cleanup plan have been proposed in recent months, the Duwamish River Cleanup Coalition at first offered information and urged community members to participate in the comment process. But now it’s turned up the pushback a few notches – including a community rally tonight in South Park.

After gathering at South Park Plaza, nearly 100 river supporters of all ages, with signs in many languages, walked up onto the South Park Bridge‘s pedestrian path.

As participants stood along the bridge, passing drivers – from scooters to industrial trucks – beeped their support.

DRCC’s executive director Paulina López, engagement manager Adrienne Hampton, and Superfund manager James Rasmussen got to the heart of the reason for the rally – holding government and industry accountable for keeping their cleanup commitment: “This is not just a river for Georgetown and South Park. This is a river for the whole city. … Imagine what it could be like when we get the reast of the job done.”

DRCC sounded the alarm because of what it calls a “triple threat” to the river – including proposed changes to allowable pollutant levels as well as proposed changes in the cleanup itself – all explained here. (We also covered one of the proposals here.)

Their decision for a more visible form of resistance appears to have already had results. This afternoon, hours before the rally, the city, county, and port announced a letter to the EPA urging that cleanup commitments be met. We asked López about the letter; she said she was glad to see more pressure on the EPA, because “they are not listening to us.” DRCC is hoping that will change with more voices – “stay involved, keep fighting … continue to advocate for the Duwamish River” was the request at rally’s end.

SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: American Constellation

Thanks to David Hutchinson for the photo. The small cruise ship American Constellation sailed into Elliott Bay today. It carries up to 175 passengers – a tiny fraction of the other ships that sail from/to Seattle. The ship is scheduled to sail out of Seattle tomorrow on a 10-night “Grand Puget Sound Cruise” (see the itinerary here). Four other sailings from Seattle are on its schedule in October and November.

West Seattle teen to spend Saturday swimming, biking, running ‘solo Ironman’ triathlon

That’s Herman Meyer, who you might see around West Seattle tomorrow attempting an intense atyletic feat. Herman’s friend Riley Nachtrieb tells the story:

West Seattle High School senior Herman Meyer (17 years old) is attempting to complete a solo Ironman around West Seattle on Saturday, September 25th. This is an unorganized event.

Not only is he doing his first Ironman triathlon (2.4 mile swim, 112-mile bike, and 26.2-mile run), he is doing it alone, competing only with himself.

Herman will be attempting this as a personal endeavor. It is purely driven by his determination to finish the 140.3 miles. He says, “I talked about it with a friend and I thought it would be fun to do. I have always wanted to do something like it, so I committed.”

He’s going to start the swim at 8 am near the Alki Bathhouse. Around one and a half hours later, he will be transitioning to his bike, riding loops around West Seattle until he reaches the 112-mile mark at his house- This will be around seven and a half hours later. From there, he will continue onto his 26.2 mile run. If everything goes according to plan, he will finish his solo Ironman around 12 am.

Herman will be accompanied by friends and family for safety, support, and pacing. West Seattle High School friends will be following on paddle boards; His parents, Kathrine and Wesley Meyer, will be following on bikes; And WSHS alum Riley Nachtrieb, who attempted to run the first 140mi Olympic Discovery Trail FKT, will be running with him.

On Saturday, if you see a person swimming alongside paddle boards, a cyclist wearing a pink helmet, or a couple people running on Alki at zero dark thirty, that is Herman! The public is always welcomed to show support publicly and virtually throughout this amazing effort.

On Saturday, you can follow along live on Instagram: @hermanasaurus_rex and @rileyknachtrieb.
