FOLLOWUP: South Delridge stabbing victim identified

3:35 PM: The King County Medical Examiner has just identified the victim of last Friday night’s deadly stabbing in South Delridge as 34-year-old Michael Abay. His cause of death is listed as multiple stab wounds. We also asked Seattle Police for an update on the case, but they have no new information. Police told WSB on Friday night that they received a call about someone lying in the street in the 1600 block of SW Cambridge, and when they arrived, the victim was already dead.

As noted here on Friday night, this was the third homicide of the year in West Seattle, after the May shooting of Lorenzo Marr at West Seattle Stadium and the June stabbing of Jonathan Pecina near Luna/Anchor Park, and no arrests have been reported in those cases either. If you have any information in any of those cases, the SPD Homicide Unit tip line is 206-233-5000.

To help the program, the West Seattle Booster Club is planning a golf fundraiser next month – from the announcement e-mailed by the WSBC:

WEST SEATTLE WEATHER: Where to stay cool

As noted here early today, a heat advisory is in effect, and the National Weather Service also says this week overall might break a record:

With that said, the city’s just sent its list of places to stay cool. In West Seattle, the list includes Delridge Library (5423 Delridge Way SW) and High Point Library (3411 SW Raymond), both open 1-8 pm today, as well as the Senior Center of West Seattle (4217 SW Oregon), open weekdays 8:30 am-5 pm. You can see the full city announcement – which also includes advice on staying cool, protecting pets and vulnerable people, etc. – by going here.

P.S. Got other air-conditioning recommendations – restaurants/bars, for example? We don’t keep a standard list because it’s ever-changing but we appreciate suggestions in the comments!

The Highland Park Spraypark (11 am-8 pm; 1100 SW Cloverdale) is open daily all season regardless of the weather, but given the expected high temp, we’re mentioning it again. Ticket sales start today for Southwest Seattle Historical Society tour @ Gatewood house where REI began

That’s the Gatewood house where REI (Recreational Equipment, Inc.) was founded in Gatewood, 80 years ago. On the afternoon of Sunday, August 5, it will be the site of the Southwest Seattle Historical Society‘s annual “If These Walls Could Talk” home tour. Ticket sales will begin at noon today, the SWSHS says. You’ll have two options – the basic tour, or tour plus a VIP reception and talk – as explained on this page, which is also where ticket sales will be activated at noon. As SWSHS summarizes what happened in the house:

It all started with a $15 ice axe — In 1935 Mountaineers Club member Lloyd Anderson purchased an ice axe from an importer in the United States. The axe was at the same time very expensive for that time-period, and also was poorly made. When the axe broke it set Lloyd on a mission that would lead to the formation of a co-op for the Mountaineers that would eventually become REI.

Guest speaker for the VIP event, noon-2 pm, is Bobby Whittaker, son of Jim Whittaker; the SWSHS says he “will be talking about growing up in a climbing family, and his early memories of hanging out at Capitol Hill store location at the time when his father Jim was involved in the operations of REI” as well as showing clips from “Return to Mount Kennedy,” which we reported on in May.

No midsummer slowdown for the West Seattle (and Ballard) light-rail planning process.

We have several things to report. First – the date is set for the next West Seattle “neighborhood forum” – Saturday, September 8th, 9-11:30 am, Seattle Lutheran High School gym (4100 SW Genesee). That’s open to everyone.

ST has been conducting some by-invitation events in the meantime, all-day design charrettes for the future station areas, including one last Friday in Delridge and another coming up this Tuesday in The Junction.

And soil sampling continues in Pigeon Point.

We reported last week on that site at 19th/Genesee; ST tells WSB that the crew will continue work there through Tuesday, and then move to a site described by ST as “20th Ave SW and the end of the cul-de-sac north of SW Charlestown Street” for work on Wednesday and Thursday.

Also this past week, both working groups for the project met. We covered the Elected Leadership Group meeting at the ST board room downtown on Thursday. Here’s how that went:

CONGRATULATIONS! West Seattle 10-year-old’s achievement at Seafair Kids’ Triathlon

Thanks to proud mom Maija Wade for the photo and report on her son’s achievement:

Today at the BRI Seafair Triathlon Kids Long Course, 10 year old Marshall Wade of Gatewood Elementary School won 1st place in his age group, 1st among all male youth participants, and 3rd place overall.

The Kids Long Course includes a 100-yard swim, 2-mile bike ride, and 1-mile run.

This is Marshall’s second Seafair Triathlon and his first podium finish. After the event, Marshall said, “It was very fun and my goal is to have fun! … We as kids can do this!”

The event was held at Seward Park.

UPDATE: Water-rescue response brings SFD crews to Seacrest

8:03 PM: A water-rescue response is headed to Seacrest/Don Armeni, though apparently it’s related to a call involving a kiteboarder seen from a spot across the bay in Discovery Park – the dock here is being used as a rendezvous point. Updates as we hear them.

8:10 PM: The kiteboarder who was the subject of the original call is apparently OK and getting assistance to get to shore on the other side of the bay. Fireboat Leschi is still at Seacrest loading up assistance just in case.

8:15 PM: And now they’re keeping the rescue operation going as they’ve determined other kiteboarders in the water may still need help.

8:21 PM: Our crew talked to SFD personnel at Seacrest who explained that they brought divers to the dock to get on board Leschi, which is now headed across the bay. Added a photo of the SFD land unit that’ll be leaving Seacrest soon. Meantime, the actual rescue, south of West Point, sounds to be going OK, with one person still in the water but rescuers nearby.

SPORTS: Another West Seattle Little League victory at state tournament

7:18 PM: Thanks again to Cami MacNamara for another report from Sedro-Woolley, where the West Seattle Little League All-Star 12s scored another big state-tournament win today, this time against Walla Walla, with the game called at 14-0 in the fifth inning. As shown on the official bracket, their next game is Tuesday, 4 pm vs. Sammamish.

9:22 PM: Thanks to Barry J. White for sending photos and a summary:

Miles Gosztola pitched three dominant innings, allowing no hits while striking out seven.

Robbie Foisy relieved him and pitched two hitless innings and striking out three.

Matthew Henning smacked a three-run homer as part of a six-run third inning that broke the game open. As they have throughout this run, the team helped itself with aggressive baserunning and sharp defense.

Here in the heart of summer, waves of big events just keep rolling on … and another one is up next weekend: The 2018 Alki Art Fair! This will be the 21st annual AAF – if you’ve never been, here’s how it’s described by organizers: “Alki Beach will come alive with art booths, children’s art activities, food carts, live music and performances, and the very popular silent auction held in the historic Alki Bathhouse. The Fair features juried art on display and for sale by local Puget Sound artists, while a line-up of talented musicians and performers entertain from four stages, morning till night.” Official Alki Art Fair hours (on the boardwalk by and west of Alki Bathhouse) will be 10 am-6 pm next Saturday and Sunday (July 28-29), with music until 9 pm on Saturday. Bonus for getting there: A free shuttle from the park-and-ride under the bridge, as explained here. We’re proud to be an Alki Art Fair co-sponsor again this year; we’ll have another update with artist and music info as next weekend gets closer!

Just in case you hadn’t heard – this starts tomorrow, as announced by the King County Water Taxi:

The King County Water Taxi will operate the West Seattle route next Monday through Wednesday, July 23 – 25, using its smaller backup vessel, the Spirit of Kingston. The Doc Maynard will undergo preventative maintenance during this time. Riders are advised to arrive early for their evening commute as some sailings may sell out.

West Seattle Grand Parade 2018: The youth

These photos from Saturday’s West Seattle Grand Parade are a shoutout to some of the younger participants who we haven’t shown so far. Above, West Seattle Bengals football players were a crowd favorite. Below, another group of young athletes, the Southside Revolution roller-derby skaters, rolled down the route:

Seattle’s only parade with an international police presence

It wasn’t all about the wheels for the Vancouver B.C. Police Motorcycle Drill Team‘s annual visit to ride in the West Seattle Grand Parade. In The Junction, where the riding ended for Vancouver and their Seattle Police counterparts, there was time to get up close and personal. Not just with the fans.

There were a lot of special things about Saturday.

VPD is celebrating its centennial. SPD, we’re told, has someone retiring.

Also seen on the route, though not with a motorcycle, Southwest Precinct commander Capt. Pierre Davis.

And the “other” two-wheeled SPD officers:

P.S. West Seattle’s parade is the only one outside Canada in which the Vancouver team participates.

About 100 people had already settled in outside the West Seattle YMCA (WSB sponsor) about an hour before sunset, and right about now are well into “Wonder Woman,” first West Seattle Outdoor Movies feature of the year. At the concession stand, we found someone costumed in the spirit of the movie:

The night’s concession options included popcorn, water, and gummies. Every West Seattle Outdoor Movies event spotlights a nonprofit, and tonight it’s the WS Helpline, with a table just past the screen and $3 raffle tickets for some cool prizes:

Those prizes included a Mountaineers family membership and two tickets to a Seahawks game. Next week’s nonprofit is WestSide Baby – bring diapers! – and the movie is “Secret Life of Pets,” at dusk July 28th. You’re invited to show up as early as 6:30 pm. The Y is at 3622 SW Snoqualmie in The Triangle.

About 80 people, with 60 dogs, showed up for the first ever PAWrade before today’s West Seattle Grand Parade – it was a new collaboration this year between the parade-presenting Rotary Club of West Seattle and the West Seattle Junction Association. UPDATE: 2018 West Seattle Grand Parade, as it started/ended

10:49 AM: The 2018 West Seattle Grand Parade is on! The Seattle Police Motorcycle Drill Team has taken off, with the Vancouver B.C. PD motorcycles following – and then after a bit of a pause, the rest of the parade (with the PAWrade in The Junction in the meantime).

11:11 AM: And now that the motorcycle teams have made it far enough down the route, the rest of the parade has begun, with the Troop 284 honor guard:

Watch our Twitter feed for updates (you can access it via the Web – you don’t have to be a Twitter member); we’ll also update this report when the parade has concluded and California SW has reopened.

12:11 PM: After an hour, the parade has ended at the start line – the parade coordinators, judges, and chair are traveling down the street at the end. But it’ll be a while until the conclusion in The Junction (we have a crew there too).

1:10 PM: The parade is now over at the ending point (California/Edmunds), too. As always, lots more coverage to come in separate reports, with photos and video.
