West Seattle, Washington
15 Friday
Someone called 911 a short time ago about a paddleboarder possibly in trouble more than a quarter-mile out in the bay, as seen from 54th/Alki. According to SFD, which sent one engine and a fireboat, a U.S. Coast Guard vessel just made contact with the paddleboarder, who was reported to be “fine … just reading a book,” they told dispatch.
Last Thursday, in a comment on an update about city plans to clear the SW Trenton RV encampment, a commenter mentioned police arresting someone that morning. We now have some information about that – first, this short SPD summary:
At 0526 hours [September 5], officers from the SW Precinct observed multiple subjects in the 2600 block of Southwest Trenton Street passing around and utilizing narcotics. Police came up with a plan to detain the individuals and established probable cause for two individuals utilizing and possessing narcotics. The two subjects were arrested with LEAD diversions. A third suspect was arrested for a felony warrant.
We followed up with SPD after seeing the summary. Because two of the people opted into LEAD, we don’t have any information about them. The one who was booked into jail on a previous warrant has quite a saga. 29-year-old Delijahjan M. Hunt has had that warrant out for his arrest for almost two years, relating to a second-degree burglary charge from a West Seattle break-in in January 2020. The case has a very long trail of documents; we just downloaded and read a dozen of them. He was arrested shortly after the burglary, which happened at the Junction Flats apartment building‘s parking garage. Hunt is alleged to have been one of three men who went into the garage and stole a bicycle; police say he was found with the stolen bicycle south of The Junction a short time later. He was rush-charged two days later by the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office. Jail records don’t go back further than a year, so we don’t know when he was released, but he didn’t show up for arraignment two weeks later, and a $5,000 arrest warrant was issued. At some point he was arrested again; in March 2020, he was released on personal recognizance. In July 2020, he didn’t show up for a hearing, but no warrant was issued because of the pandemic – a common practice at the time, we recall from various other cases we covered.
In December 2021, a $10,000 warrant was issued for Hunt’s arrest. By January 2022, he was back in custody, then released when the Northwest Community Bail Fund posted his cash bail. That was forfeited in May, after he failed to show up for an April hearing. Then a $15,000 warrant was issued. He was back in jail by September 2022, when records show Seaview Insurance posting bond via a bail-bonds company. After he failed to show up for yet another hearing, a warrant was issued in October 2022, and the documents trail shows that was the one on which he was arrested last week on SW Trenton. He’s still in jail in lieu of the $15,075 bail for which that warrant was issued; we’ll be checking to see what happens next.
2:52 PM: We don’t know if this work is happening right now or already complete, but received this note from SDOT this afternoon:
Seattle Department of Transportation (SDOT) is performing construction work at the intersection of 20th Ave SW and SW Roxbury St today (Monday, September 9, 2024) which requires closing a single lane of traffic at a time throughout the day.
Crews are removing crosswalk markings on the eastern side of this intersection where there is no walk signal equipment. We have received community feedback that these markings created a confusing situation because there is no crossing signal equipment on this side of the street to trigger a red light to stop cars when people need to cross the street. People will still be able to cross SW Roxbury St using the crosswalk and walk signal equipment on the western side of this intersection.
And a reminder that by state law, every intersection is a crosswalk, whether painted or not.
3:51 PM: Given that, we asked SDOT spokesperson Ethan Bergerson on followup, why remove the markings? (We also noted they must have been recent, because Google Street View’s most-recent image, dated 2018, doesn’t show a crosswalk on that side.) His reply:
The crosswalk markings on the eastern side of the intersection were painted by mistake by a private contractor working for King County during the construction of the RapidRide H line and does not match our approved designs for this intersection.
SDOT learned of the issue when a community member wrote to us this summer. The eastern crosswalk markings were leading to a confusing situation for people crossing the street. People need to push the crossing signal button on the western side of the street to trigger a red light to stop cars so that they can cross safely. If people wait to cross on the east side of the street, the light does not automatically change for them.
We are looking into whether other options to let people cross on either side of the street may be possible in the future, as we take the immediate step of removing the confusing crosswalk for now.
Thanks for the tips. Highline Public Schools, the district immediately south of here, has announced its schools will remain closed for a second day tomorrow:
All schools will remain closed on Tuesday, September 10. All school activities, athletics and meetings are canceled. Central office will be open.
Our investigation into unauthorized activity on our technology systems is ongoing, and critical systems are still offline.
The message sent to Highline staffers, as forwarded to us, also says “We have not seen evidence of staff, family, or student information compromised.” The district so far is not commenting on the nature of the “unauthorized activity,” first disclosed on Sunday afternoon.
As Origins Cannabis prepares to celebrate its grand opening tomorrow (Tuesday, September 10) after recently moving to a new West Seattle Junction location, we’re welcoming the shop as a returning WSB sponsor. Here’s what they’d like you to know about what they do:
After operating in West Seattle for 8 years, Origins is excited to move to a new and improved location in West Seattle at 4822 California Ave. SW.
Origins‘ entire approach is about appreciation and authenticity of the Pacific Northwest. By that, we mean we have partnered with Washington artists, brands, and farms to give our customers a one-of-a kind experience that honors the WA cannabis industry, while also making cannabis accessible to all those adults who want to explore.
Anyone driving by the store is now greeted by a mural capturing the unique beauty of the pacific northwest, painted by Glynn Rosenberg. Glynn has done an amazing job visually displaying Origins’ ethos of living authentically for all to see.
Additionally, we have a welcoming storefront, with clear open windows to see into our store, eliminating the stigma of cannabis and showing all that cannabis retail is a welcoming experience for adult consumers to explore.
Once customers come into the store, those who placed their orders online can go to our expedited checkout station, first-time customers can learn about Origins’ Lifestyle categories of products, read informational materials in our library and cozy seating area, talk to our highly educated and trained cannabis guides about selecting the right products for their unique body chemistry, and explore, smell and experience our Terpene Bar, first of its kind in WA.
Origins‘ new store is an upgraded environment that caters to customers wanting a speedy, efficient shopping experience, those that are coming in to explore and learn, and those seeking 1:1 customer service experience. We remapped our sales floor to eliminate long wait times, and expedite order fulfillment.
Origins also is super proud to debut our monthly 6 featured farms. These are the farms that our customers said are their favorites in each product category. Each month we will roll out 6 different featured farms; the goal is to share with WA consumers what makes these brands the best of the best, and offer special, personalized experiences for our customers with these brands, like farm tours, and meet and greets with the brands.
Origins‘ new West Seattle location is open 8 am-10:30 pm Mondays-Thursdays, 8 am-11:30 pm Fridays and Saturdays, 9 am-9 pm Sundays.
WSB thanks Origins Cannabis for sponsoring independent, community-collaborative neighborhood news; find our current sponsor team listed in directory format here. You can email patrick@wsbsales.com for info on joining the team!

Thanks for the tips. Seattle Fire responded to Summit Atlas, the middle/high school at 35th/Roxbury, for an incident that led to a brief evacuation; we went over to find out what happened. We’re told the furnace came on for the first time and that led to an alarming odor, so SFD was called to ensure there was no fire.

Thanks for all the photos of tonight’s sunset, one more smoke-colorized view before the air cleared (tonight’s readings are pretty much back to normal). The top photo is from David Hutchinson; below, from James Bratsanos, catching the rest of the Olympics:

Another major event this week – the first community meeting with police at the Southwest Precinct since March (here’s our coverage of that one). Officers from the precinct have attended neighborhood-group meetings during that time, but Wednesday (September 11) will bring the first meeting to be held under the Southwest Precinct Crime Prevention Council banner since March. The “council” is really just whoever shows up, rather than an official organization (which it used to be, years ago). The meeting is being organized by the precinct’s Crime Prevention Coordinator Jennifer Satterwhite. She says they’ll be held quarterly. This time, the guest speakers are District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka and Southwest Precinct leadership (the precinct has changed commanders since last meeting, now led by Capt. Krista Bair). All are welcome; start time is 6:30 pm Wednesday in the community room, which is right off the parking lot on the south side of the building at 2300 SW Webster.
8:08 PM: Tuesday (September 10) brings the first and likely only debate between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump. Several readers have asked us whether any place in West Seattle is planning a public debate-watching event. We haven’t heard of any, so we’re asking you if you have. It’s at 6 pm our time Tuesday, in Philadelphia, produced by ABC News. If you know of any events, please comment below (or email us, westseattleblog@gmail.com) – thank you!
8:50 PM: We’re changing the headline to “who else is …” because we’ve had our first reply: West Seattle Realty (WSB sponsor) and almost-neighbor Good Society are co-presenting a watch party, at the brewpub (California/Lander).
This was the first week of classes at Hope Lutheran‘s new middle-school campus on the north edge of The Junction – the 2/3-acre campus at 4100 SW Genesee that was Seattle Lutheran High School for 44 years, until 2022. This morning, “Hope North” was officially dedicated after a procession from the main Hope Lutheran church/school campus a block south.
Hope’s senior pastor Peter Mueller first spoke to congregants and school families on the church’s main steps, recalling the almost four-year odyssey to reach this point, and the continuing capital campaign to help with the $1.6 million purchase and renovation costs. Likening it to the biblical journey of Joshua – he had everyone walk to the newly opened school, singing along the way.
Then outside the “Hope North” gym, after an invocation from the pastor and words from 15th-year Hope principal Kristen Okabayashi about the “amazing journey,” student body president Benjamin cut the ribbon:
For a look inside some of the 14 newly reopened classrooms, see this WSB story from an open house back in June.
Thanks for the tips. Highline Public Schools – the district immediately south of here – has announced that a technology problem will close all its schools tomorrow (Monday, September 9) though some staffers are still expected to come to work. Here’s the full announcement from the district’s website:
All schools are closed on Monday, September 9. All school activities, athletics and meetings are canceled, including the vaccine clinic. Central office is open.
We have detected unauthorized activity on our technology systems and have taken immediate action to isolate critical systems. We are working closely with third-party, state and federal partners to safely restore and test our systems.
We understand this comes as an unexpected disruption, particularly on the eve of the first day of kindergarten for many of our families. We recognize the burden this decision places on both families and staff, but student safety is our top priority, and we cannot have school without these critical systems in place. …
School and central office administrators are expected to report to work. Central office administrators may be deployed to schools if needed.
The investigation is ongoing. We will notify staff and families by 2:00 p.m. on Monday if this disruption impacts schools on Tuesday.
Like most other local schools, Highline just started its 2024-2025 year this past week.
Thanks for the tip! The live traffic camera verifies that the Spokane Street Viaduct eastbound-and-partial-westbound closure has ended early, and all lanes are open again, in both directions. (The closure had been announced as planned for the entire weekend.)
Looking for a new job? The WSB West Seattle Jobs Offered section of our community forums has lots of new listings, so we’re publishing one of our periodic reminders, in case you were unaware of it. For local businesses/organizations, it’s free to post a job. You do need a (free) log-in for the forum section – and if you don’t already have one, you can get that here. You don’t need a log-in to browse the job listings, though – just go here.
(Saturday sunset – photo by Jerry Simmons)
Welcome to Sunday! Here are notes for today/tonight, mostly from the WSB West Seattle Event Calendar, starting with a traffic alert:
SPOKANE STREET VIADUCT EASTBOUND CLOSURE: Reminder – the eastbound side of the Spokane Street Viaduct (continuation of West Seattle Bridge between 99 and I-5) is closed this weekend as the resurfacing project continues; the inside westbound lane is closed too, which means the northbound I-5 exit to the westbound West Seattle Bridge is closed. If this reopens early, we’ll publish a separate update.
BIG BLUE TRUCK: It’s back in West Seattle – the Northwest Center‘s donation-dropoff truck (WSB sponsor)! You’ll find it outside WaFd Bank (4102 California SW). Our calendar listing has info on what items the truck will accept. 9 am-5 pm.
SWIM IN THE SOUND: At 9 am, jump into the weekly group plunge into Puget Sound off Alki – meet at Statue of Liberty Plaza (61st/Alki).

Friends, family, and fellow riders gathered at Lincoln Park this morning to remember Steve Hulsman before a ride in his honor. Mr. Hulsman, 66, was killed last December in a collision with a driver in Arbor Heights. He was a longtime volunteer ride leader for Cascade Bicycle Club, which organized this ride as a tribute. Some who gathered were there in commemorative orange T-shirts:
They included Mr. Hulsman’s widow Rita Hulsman, one of the pre-ride speakers, who has advocated tirelessly for safety in the months since his death.
She spoke after Cascade’s Tyler Vasquez and Lee Lambert, the High Performance Cycling team’s David Longdon, and District 1 City Councilmember Rob Saka, who talked about the Seattle Transportation Levy on the general-election ballot, which he amended to include a TBA protected bike lane to be named in Mr. Hulsman’s honor.
They’re all in our video:
Before the riders departed, they toasted Mr. Hulsman:
Participating riders had their choice of three routes this morning, 14 miles to 42 miles.
Again tonight, police are investigating gunfire in West Seattle. This time, on Puget Ridge. In the past half-hour, 911 calls came in from people who thought they heard gunfire in the 18th/Myrtle vicinity [vicinity map]. A caller in the 2100 block of SW Myrtle reported having security video showing a “newer blue Chevrolet” from which the gunshots might have been fired. And officers have since confirmed to dispatch that they found three casings. No report of injuries.
Chief Sealth International High School‘s first game of the 2024 season is in the books. The Seahawks went to Memorial Stadium downtown this afternoon to play Bellingham HS, and came back across the bridge with a win – Sealth 10, Bellingham 7. Head coach Daron Camacho and his team have their home opener next Friday (September 13), 4:30 pm, vs. Franklin HS, at Nino Cantu Southwest Athletic Complex (2801 SW Thistle).
Just two weeks to go until the next Recycle Roundup at Fauntleroy Church – 9 am to 3 pm on Saturday, September 21. Here’s the list of what Recycle Roundup partner 1 Green Planet will and won’t accept this time. If it’s on the list of what they’ll accept, just bring it to the church’s lot (9140 California SW) and drop it off, free. One request from organizers: Don’t procrastinate – the earlier in the six-hour window that you can arrive, the better – they don’t want to see 3 pm approach with a long line waiting.
5:09 PM: Thanks for the tips and photos. That 2-car crash at 42nd/Alaska is blocking eastbound Alaska right now – avoid the area for a while. No indication of major injuries so far – the SFD response is just one engine, no medic unit.
5:57 PM: Live camera shows it’s still blocked but at least one tow truck is on scene.
6:37 PM: The scene has cleared. We’re following up with SFD re: injuries.
ADDED SUNDAY AFTERNOON: SFD tells us its crews treated a 34-year-old woman and 14-year-old girl, neither of whom needed to be taken to a hospital.
