DELRIDGE WAY: 2 chokepoints this weekend

Along with the south Delridge Way closure we’ve been talking about, the intersection of Delridge and Orchard is also going to be a chokepoint this weekend, SDOT warns in the newest update on the project paving the way for the RapidRide H Line:

o We will be working through the weekend to install a catch basin near the middle of the intersection

o There will be flaggers helping to redirect traffic around the work zone. Please plan accordingly and expect heavy traffic and delays.

Catch-basin work is also the reason for this weekend’s closure of part of Delridge:

We will be closing all lanes of Delridge Way SW from SW Barton St to 18th Ave SW beginning tomorrow, August 29. The work will continue through August 30 to allow time for Seattle Public Utilities to complete additional work in the area. Please expect:

• Delridge Way SW to be fully closed from SW Barton St to 18th Ave SW

• Local access only to be allowed from SW Henderson St to SW Barton St and 18th Ave to SW Roxbury St

• Restricted turns from side streets onto Delridge Way SW while the closure is in place

• Access to businesses to be maintained at all times

As for the rest of the project zone along Delridge, here’s the plan for the week ahead.

TRAFFIC WATCH: Friday notes + weekend Delridge Way closure reminder

6:12 AM: It’s Friday, the 158th morning without the West Seattle Bridge.

CLOSURES

*Again today, we’re reminding you about this weekend’s closure on Delridge Way as work continues on the RapidRide H Line prep project, From SDOT:

We will be working in the roadway to install a catch basin between SW Barton St and 18th Ave SW on Delridge Way SW. This work will require us to operate very large equipment in this area. Considering the area where this work will be done is a narrow stretch of Delridge Way SW with just two lanes of traffic, this work will include a full closure of Delridge Way SW from SW Barton St to 18th Ave SW. This closure will take place the weekend of 8/29/2020 and will last up to 2 days.

During this work, SW Roxbury St to SW Henderson St will be local access only, except for a full closure at the work zone between SW Barton St and 18th Ave SW. People driving between SW Henderson St and SW Roxbury St will need to detour to 16th Ave SW to get around this work.

It’s important to note that businesses in the area will remain open during this work. If people plan on visiting a business in or around the work area during this time, they will still be able to access Delridge Way SW in areas where local access in maintained. However, there will be no access between SW Barton St and 18th Ave SW, local or otherwise.

Meantime, here’s the newest bulletin detailing where else crews are working this week.

*Also this weekend: More pavement repair is planned in The Junction, closing part of 44th SW between Edmunds and Alaska.

FOLLOWUP: Admiral Way sinkhole patched, and what’s next

11:47 AM: For everybody taking bets on how long it would be until the newest Admiral Way sinkhole (at Stevens) got filled, we just went over to check, and it has already been patched, still coned off for now. We are inquiring with SDOT about whether this is the extent of planned repairs or whether something more permanent is planned.

2:29 PM: From SDOT’s Kari Tupper:

Crews put in a temporary cold mix patch on Admiral Way. Please see the attached photo.

We will be putting steel plates down on top of it this afternoon, while Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) runs a camera (CCTV) into the sewer pipe to ensure that there aren’t any issues with the pipe leading to erosion and a sink hole on the surface. SPU is expected to do the CCTV work today and we’ll have the review of the video (i.e. status of the pipe) sometime tomorrow. Depending on crew availability, we’re hoping to fill this permanently and pave it next week, assuming that the pipe doesn’t need any repairs.

TRAFFIC ALERT: More road work this weekend and next, including a major Delridge Way closure

August 21, 2020 1:22 pm
|    Comments Off on TRAFFIC ALERT: More road work this weekend and next, including a major Delridge Way closure
 |   Delridge | South Park | West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

In addition to the 44th SW road work this weekend that we’ve already previewed multiple times, SDOT has three more alerts:

ROADSIDE TREE TRIMMING: This may be happening along two stretches:

We are continuing our tree trimming work on West Seattle Bridge closure reroutes this weekend. This work is important to increase visibility and enhance safety. This Saturday and Sunday, August 22-23, we’ll work to complete tree trimming on SW Orchard St between Delridge Way SW and Dumar Way SW heading eastbound. If we’re able to finish that project, there is also some much-needed tree trimming to accomplish at the 6700 block of W Marginal Way SW, near Highland Park Way SW.

ALSO THIS WEEKEND, IN SOUTH PARK: This is along the main route to/from the South Park Bridge – note that it’ll continue next weekend, too:

Starting this weekend, August 22-23, a private contractor will begin working on S Cloverdale St between 10th Ave S and 12th Ave S to replace two large utility cuts in the road that are currently patched with asphalt. This work will continue for two consecutive weekends.

During this work, traffic will be down to a single lane. The contractor’s crews will be directing traffic in alternate directions. Crews will be at the site 24/7 during these weekends and people should expect delays. This work is weather dependent. The paving crews will use fast-setting concrete, which means that if all goes well, the road should be open for Monday morning traffic each week.

DELRIDGE CLOSURE NEXT WEEKEND: Early heads-up:

As a part of the Delridge Way SW RapidRide H Line project, all lanes of Delridge Way SW will be closed from SW Barton St to 18th Ave SW for up to 2 days beginning on Saturday, August 29. Delridge Way SW will be restricted to local access only from SW Henderson St to SW Roxbury St, but access to businesses in this area will be maintained. This closure will allow our team to connect a catch basin in the roadway. Please follow posted detour routes to 16th Ave SW. If you have any questions about this work, please contact DelridgeTransit@seattle.gov or 206-775-8739

FOLLOWUP: Junction gas-line break, and weekend road-work reminder

August 20, 2020 12:28 pm
|    Comments Off on FOLLOWUP: Junction gas-line break, and weekend road-work reminder
 |   Utilities | West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

(WSB photo, last Saturday)

Last Saturday, you might recall, crews working to replace damaged pavement on 44th SW in The Junction, between SW Alaska and SW Edmunds, hit a gas line. We followed up with SDOT to ask how that happened. Spokesperson Kari Tupper says that, as with the Delridge breaks last month, this was a case of a line that shouldn’t have been there, and that in turn forced the extension of the work into this past Monday:

On Saturday, SDOT paving crews discovered a gas line that appears to have been abandoned by someone who did not follow the proper shutoff/ removal procedures. SDOT crews followed all of the proper safety protocols before and after the gas line break, and worked with Puget Sound Energy and Seattle Fire Department to shut off the abandoned gas line.

While our paving crews resolved the situation relatively quickly, the incident forced us to push back our concrete delivery by a few hours and our concrete supplier was unable to provide all of the concrete mix we needed due to commitments with another contractor who had arranged a large delivery that same afternoon. The supplier was unable to open up their facilities to make a delivery on Sunday. Fortunately, our crews adapted to the situation and were able to accomplish other necessary work on Sunday. The concrete was delivered and crews finished the paving work on Monday morning.

The project is now back on schedule and that means two more weekend closures as originally announced: this weekend (August 22-23) and next (August 29-30).

THE OTHER BRIDGE: Updated schedule for 1st Avenue South Bridge’s panel-replacement work

We checked in today with WSDOT on the status of the ongoing nighttime work to replace deck panels on the northbound 1st Avenue South Bridge. Here’s what spokesperson Tom Pearce tells us:

Our contractor has used five nights of full closures on the NB SR 99 Duwamish River Bridge. Per our agreement, the contractor is allowed to have nine more full closures. They are scheduling three more for Sept. 8-9-10.

During the next two weeks, the northbound bridge will reduce to one lane nightly Sundays through Thursdays, 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. No work on Friday or Saturday nights. These do not count against the nighttime full directional closures.

They have replaced six panels on the bridge; they still have eight to do.

As a reminder, if you have to cross the Duwamish late at night/early in the morning, the West Seattle low bridge is open to all 9 pm-5 am.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Extra day for 44th SW work north of Edmunds

August 17, 2020 9:54 am
|    Comments Off on TRAFFIC ALERT: Extra day for 44th SW work north of Edmunds
 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

9:54 AM: Just received from SDOT:

Due to some unforeseen challenges at the 44th Ave SW and SW Edmunds street paving project, the crew will need to work an extra day today, Monday 8/17, (until) 7 pm. The same restrictions will be in place on this block of 44th Ave SW (no thru traffic and no Metro traffic, but local access allowed.) After Monday, the crew will resume the schedule on the flyer for the next 2 weekends.

The crew worked at least 12 hours on Saturday to manage the unforeseen issues and minimize traffic impacts and local disruptions to the extent possible. They will finish paving the curb panels today, but they won’t be able to open those curb panels up to vehicles until Tuesday night or Wednesday morning in order to allow sufficient cure time. The travel lane panels should be opened Monday night since they were paved on Saturday.

The note didn’t mention whether Saturday’s gas-line break factored into the “unforeseen challenges”; we have a followup question out.

10:44 AM: We just went over to look. 44th is currently open except for part of the southbound lane right before SW Edmunds, and even there, one lane is open, with flagger help.

From SDOT‘s notice:

ï‚· Sidewalk access will not be impacted.
ï‚· Please use detour route.
ï‚· All lanes will be closed to general traffic and Metro traffic on 44th Ave SW between SW Edmunds St and SW Alaska Street on:

SW GENESEE IN NORTH DELRIDGE: As part of the project preparing for the RapidRide H Line, SW Genesee is closed again this weekend between Delridge and 25th, with local-only access east of Genesee. Delridge Way itself IS open, though.

SDOT says, “Drivers will need to detour at SW Andover St or SW Alaska St to get to and from Delridge Way SW.” Also note that Metro Route 50 is rerouted (details here). The closure could last until 5 am Monday, although last weekend’s closure was over by early Sunday evening, so we’ll be checking on it.

CHECK THE TRAFFIC BEFORE YOU GO

Here’s the 5-way intersection camera (Spokane/West Marginal/Delridge/Chelan):

The main detour route across the Duwamish River is the 1st Avenue South Bridge (map) . Here’s that camera:

The other major bridge across the river is the South Park Bridge (map). Here’s that camera:

Going through South Park? Don’t speed.

Check the @SDOTBridges Twitter feed for info about any of those bridges opening for marine traffic.

You can see all local traffic cams here; locally relevant cameras are also shown on this WSB page.

FOLLOWUP: SDOT sets dates for more West Seattle road repairs, with closures and bus reroutes

Last weekend, we reported that in addition to the just-completed repair of a bus-battered block of SW Alaska in The Junction, SDOT had plans to do the same at/near 44th/Edmunds. While the work wasn’t scheduled then, it is now. Just in from SDOT’s Kari Tupper:

This work is scheduled for three weekends, beginning this Saturday, August 15th through Sunday August 16th, Saturday, August 22nd through Sunday, August 23rd and Saturday, August 29 through Sunday August 30th. We will also close 44th Ave SW between SW Edmunds and SW Alaska to all traffic including Metro buses during construction and re-open late Sunday afternoons.

That work will take three weekends because at least 14 concrete panels – street sections – need to be replaced.
