TRAFFIC ALERT: West Seattle low bridge reopens ahead of schedule – here’s why, and what’s next

10:53 AM: Thanks for the tips. SDOT says the West Seattle low bridge – at one point expected to remain closed until next Saturday – has reopened ahead of schedule; this phase of cylinder work is done.

12:46 PM: We asked SDOT why they were able to reopen much sooner than projected. Spokesperson Chris Miller replied: “The removal and reinstallation work went better than expected. The Bridge Maintenance Crew had the advantage of executing the cylinder removal early this year. Their previous experience working in the limited space and handling such an unwieldy object helped them feel more at ease with the process. Additionally, many of the complications we faced during the initial removal process earlier this year did not occur this time. Predicting the complex issues that may arise during the rehabilitation of aging mechanical and electrical infrastructure is a challenge. We hope that we won’t encounter any significant problems when we reinstall the refurbished cylinder that was removed over the past weekend and the rehabilitation work for the other cylinders shifts to the west pier housing next year.”

The original announcement warned of future “short-term” closures ahead, so we also asked if there’s any timeline for those. While other low-bridge work continues without requiring closure time, “The next major project that will require a bridge outage is the replacement of the bridge control system. This work is currently projected for early spring, and the exact date will be determined based on the completion of the communications line installation. The reinstallation of the cylinder that was removed over the past weekend is still to be determined.”

|    Comments Off on LOW-BRIDGE CLOSURE: Cylinder work on Day 1 ‘went very well,’ per SDOT director
 |   Transportation | West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

Reminder that the West Seattle low bridge – aka the Spokane Street Swing Bridge – remains closed for a week of work following the return of the cylinder removed nine months ago for repairs. SDOT director Greg Spotts announced via Twitter/X tonight that today’s work to bring in the rehabilitated cylinder “went very well!” He added, “Tomorrow work continues on reinstallation.” The work is expected to continue until next Saturday afternoon (October 14th). In the meantime, as explained toward the end of this SDOT post, you can use the Transit GO app for a free daily round trip on Metro, either bus or West Seattle Water Taxi. (If you choose the latter, though, note two things: The WS Water Taxi will be on a Sunday schedule for the Indigenous Peoples’ Day holiday Monday, and next Saturday it won’t be running at all because of maintenance work to prepare for winter.)

CLOSURE REMINDER: 1 week until West Seattle low-bridge closes to surface traffic

One week from today, SDOT is scheduled to start a one-week closure of the West Seattle low bridge (aka the Spokane Street Swing Bridge) to non-maritime traffic. As announced this past Monday, the closure is so crews can “reinstall the repaired turn cylinder inside the east pier housing that was removed in early 2023.” While SDOT has promoted the West Seattle Water Taxi as an alternate way for bicyclists and pedestrians to get across the bay during the closure, there will be an overlap with the previously announced October 14-15 Water Taxi service suspension; SDOT says the low-bridge closure could continue until “mid-afternoon” on the 14th. (We’ll be checking Monday on the exact time the closure is scheduled to start next Saturday.)

UPDATE: Tree down on 48th SW

12:02 PM: Thanks to Jason Enevoldsen for the photo and tip. A tree has toppled onto 48th SW, uphill from Lowman Beach. This has happened multiple times before on that stretch of tree-lined street. SDOT was being dispatched last we heard so it might not be blocked for long.

1:47 PM: Thanks to Deb Barker for the photo – as of a little while ago, the work continued.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Thursday watch, with westbound bridge crash

7:55 AM: Another rollover crash is reported on the westbound bridge. The driver is reported to have gotten out of the car and SFD says they’re in “stable condition,” so an initially large response has been reduced.

8:03 AM: Only one engine is still on this call.

8:28 AM: Thanks to the reader who just texted a photo of the vehicle, which went on its side near the Welcome to West Seattle sign.

There have been multiple crashes in that area in the past few days and a report yesterday of a “slick spot” nearby too – we’re checking with SDOT.

TRAFFIC ALERT: Slick spot on westbound West Seattle Bridge

If you are, or someone you know is, headed for the westbound Fauntleroy end of the West Seattle Bridge any time soon, be forewarned – there’s a slick of some kind, and it’s reported to have caused some drivers to lose control. No injuries reported so far, according to police/dispatch exchanges, but some have hit the barrier. SDOT has been dispatched for a cleanup.

TRAFFIC, TRANSIT, WEATHER: Wednesday begins

7:40 AM: Just a note that multiple signals – including 35th/Fauntleroy, 35th/Avalon, Avalon/Genesee, and Delridge/Genesee – are reported to be out as part of a sizable power outage we’re covering here.

7:50 AM: Outside the outage zone – SFD and SPD are responding to a report of a 45-year-old woman hit by a driver while on foot at 35th/Barton. Minor injuries reported.

8:50 AM: The dark signals are helping contribute to a backup getting to the eastbound bridge. Meantime, Mel reports that Seattle Public Utilities has unclogged “the storm drain that was causing big puddle near Public Storage by Home Depot.”

 |   West Seattle news | West Seattle traffic alerts

8:37 PM: In the midst of another wave of rain, there’s been another crash on the West Seattle Bridge. Two lanes are blocked on the eastbound bridge at 99 for what’s been described as a one-vehicle collision – the driver “hit the wall” (the jersey barriers, as best we can tell). So if you have to head toward I-5 any time soon, give yourself extra time or consider an alternative.

8:54 PM: No serious injuries reported, and the scene has just cleared.

2 MORE TRAFFIC ALERTS: 8th/Roxbury; 21st/Croft

Two more traffic problems happening right now:

8TH/ROXBURY: A multiple-car crash – reportedly one driver hit some parked vehicles – has snarled traffic here, and police have called for four tow trucks. … 4:23 pm update: Cleared.

21ST/CROFT: Thanks for the tip. Tree limbs have fallen near this intersection uphill from/behind Louisa Boren STEM K-8. Emergency responders have been dispatched to this too. … 4:09 pm update: SPD tells dispatch they’ve “partly cleared” the street but are calling for SDOT crews with saws to get the rest.

UPDATE: ‘Rollover’ crash on westbound West Seattle Bridge

1:53 PM: SPD and SFD are on their way to a reported “rollover” crash on the west end of the West Seattle Bridge, near the Walking on Logs pullout. The driver is reported to be safely out of her vehicle.

1:58 PM: Police tell dispatch “no lanes are blocked” by this crash.

UPDATE: Crash on eastbound West Seattle Bridge at 99

8:42 PM: Avoid the eastbound bridge for a while – SFD and SPD are at the scene of a crash at the 99 overpass and traffic is clogged in that area. Initial reports suggested possible serious injuries.

8:51 PM: Only one eastbound lane is getting through at the scene right now.

8:57 PM: According to police radio, it’s believed this was caused by one driver spinning out and winding up in the path of another that couldn’t avoid colliding. No life-threatening injuries.

9:55 PM: The crash scene is now clear and lanes have reopened.

UPDATE: Crash on Delridge offramp from westbound West Seattle Bridge

3:22 PM: SFD and SPD are arriving at a reported crash on the Delridge offramp from the westbound bridge, with a “rescue extrication” response. More to come.

3:25 PM: Responders report everyone is out of the one vehicle that crashed, so they’re downsizing the response. … They’re calling for help cleaning up a fuel spill.
