An overnight-road-work from SDOT for tomorrow night/Tuesday morning:
We are removing the existing traffic markings and painting new ones at the Highland Park Way SW and SW Holden St intersection. This process requires special equipment that is noisy, and we will be working outside our normal construction hours.
When
Monday, October 30 | 7 PM – 5 AM. Please note: This work is weather and temperature dependent, so we may need to shift the date. What to Expect
We will be running equipment that sounds like a giant vacuum, but no vibration or banging is expected. Noisy work will be done by 10 PM. Alternating traffic lanes will also be closed, but there will always be one lane open for cars to get through.
Other major components of the Highland Park Way/Holden project are due for installation in the next few months, including the public art – a giant Steller’s Jay – and permanent signal.
6:02 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, October 27th.
WEATHER AND SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Sunny, high in the upper 40s, frost advisory this morning. Sunrise today is at 7:45 am; sunset, 5:59 pm.
HALLO-WEEKEND
For the next three days, and again on Tuesday, lots of trick-or-treating and other special events, so be extra-careful! Our <strong>West Seattle Halloween Guide has the full list, but especially note that Admiral District trick-or-treating 3-6 pm today is usually very busy, and on Sunday, “Halloween in The Junction” closes an extra block of California – south of Alaska – for a costume parade, trick-or-treating, and activities 11 am-2 pm.

8:06 PM: Police have 35th SW blocked at SW Dakota (map) for cleanup after a crash. We don’t know much about the crash – apparently no major injuries, as SFD has already closed out its one-engine no-medic-unit response. But the SDOT incident team was called because of a fuel/oil spill “running down” 35th southward, so that has to be cleaned up before they can reopen the street.
8:42 PM: Officers just told dispatch that the street has reopened.
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Thursday, October 26th.
WEATHER AND SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Mostly sunny, high near 50. Sunrise today is at 7:44 am; sunset, 6:02 pm.

7:47 PM: Two lanes of the westbound West Seattle Bridge are blocked by an emergency response after a collision described as a driver hitting a man who was either standing or walking on the bridge. This was initially reported to have happened on the Spokane Street Viaduct section of the bridge, near the 1st Avenue S. ramp.
7:55 PM: From the traffic camera showing the response, it appears this happened further east on the SSV.
8:31 PM: The scene has cleared. We’re checking with SFD regarding the person who was reported to have been hit.
9:42 PM: SFD tells us the man who was hit is 30 years old and was in stable condition when taken to the hospital.
12:33 PM: SFD and SPD are at California/Manning [map] for a collision with an initial “rescue extrication” dispatch. Updates to come.
12:39 PM: One person’s been extricated. California is completely closed at the scene, between Manning and Spokane. We’re on our way to find out more.
(Added: Photo sent by Christopher Boffoli)
12:37 PM: We’re told the driver of a blue car – not shown – hit the light-colored car that is shown in the photo above. SFD is gone, traffic is reopened, and one police car remains, awaiting a tow. We’re checking on the condition of the person who was extricated; the medic unit was canceled at one point, which suggests injuries were not life-threatening.
6:36 PM: SFD tells us the driver who was extricated is a 47-year-old woman who was in stable condition when taken to the hospital.
9:36 AM: Police are at the scene of a “jackknifed semi” at 47th/Spokane.
10:02 AM: An officer actually just arrived and reports it’s a truck making a delivery to a construction site, NOT a “jackknifed” truck.
Earlier:
6:00 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, October 23rd.
WEATHER AND SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Mostly cloudy, chance of rain. High in the upper 50s – then we might not even break 50 for the rest of the week. Sunrise today is at 7:39 am; sunset, 6:06 pm.
ROAD-WORK ALERT

We’re checking with SDOT to see if the Delridge repaving in the northbound lanes north of Genesee is expected to wrap up today as projected. (11:11 am update: Even while we awaited an answer to that inquiry, somebody at SDOT tweeted that the work may last until Thursday – thanks for the tip.)

SPD and SFD are arriving at the scene of a collision at 16th/Myrtle. According to emergency-radio exchanges, a 35-year-old woman is reported to have been hit by a driver and suffered an ankle injury. The driver, according to dispatch, pulled over and remains on scene. Avoid the area for a while.
Another one-car crash tonight toward the southwest (Fauntleroy) end of the westbound West Seattle Bridge, near the remaining Walking On Logs sculptures. No injuries reported. SDOT was called to reset the pushed-out-of-position barrier(s) into which the driver crashed.
5:45 PM: SPD and SFD are responding to a crash reported to be blocking the West Seattle low bridge – as many as five vehicles, according to the initial dispatch. So far it’s not visible on the traffic camera. But steer clear of the low bridge for a while.
5:48 PM: Police say the crash has closed the bridge in both directions.
6:45 PM: At least five vehicles were involved. Live traffic camera shows the bridge has reopened.
6:00 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, October 20th.

Two people have texted us in the past few minutes about a dog on the upper bridge, near the eastbound side’s Delridge onramp. One described it as “looks very afraid, has a collar, white and brown, shorter hair.” As we advised that texter, this is definitely something to report to 911 – hazard to traffic (not to mention the dog).
We received this notice on behalf of a project described only as “a movie,” working with the city to get a permit to film on the West Seattle Bridge one week from today:
10/26, weather and permit pending: We will have a convoy of cars led by Seattle Police Officers that will escort a car that is rigged with several camera systems. We will not be holding traffic whatsoever but are required to have an escort to ensure the safety of our crew and all drivers on the bridge. We will start sometime after 10 am till 2 pm and do one to four runs on the bridge, westbound and eastbound. Again, our permits are pending, and chasing the weather this time of year can be very tricky.
The most-recent such filming for which we got an early alert was one year ago.
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Thursday, October 19th.
WEATHER AND SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Mostly sunny! High in the upper 60s. Chance of rain tonight. Sunrise today is at 7:32 am; sunset, 6:15 pm.
