9:35 AM: The race is on! More than 1,500 runners and walkers (plus a few dogs) are on Alki and Harbor Avenues right now for the 2024 West Seattle 5K, coordinated by and benefiting the West Seattle High School PTSA.
The streets will reopen to vehicles when the course is cleared. (Added) Here’s our traditional video of everyone leaving the starting line:
10:25 AM: Most of the participants have crossed the finish line.
Here are the top three male and female finishers, from a printout provided by race organizers:
Male Open Winners
Evan Williams, 37, bib 9142, 16:26
Mason Murison, 16, bib 818, 17:15
Victor Ordaz, 34, bib 5278, 17:28Female Open Winners
Beau Sitzmann, 11, bib 1114, 18:50

ADDED 5 PM: Lots of kids in the West Seattle 5K. Not just evident in results – but also sights like these:
Just before the start, the runners and walkers heard words of thanks from WSHS principal Brian Vance:
Then, the WSHS Cross Country Chant:
(Video courtesy West Seattle 5K)
WSHS Cheer Team members were there for support:
Along with lots of volunteer power, the event relies on sponsor support too. We’ve been the media sponsor every year since the start. We noticed some WSB sponsors there too – Neighborhood Naturopathic and Primary Care:
The West Seattle and Fauntleroy YMCA:
Kevin Broveleit from West Seattle Realty was there to run:
And the true heroes of the day – the race organizers, who just sent this wrapup:
Thanks to all of you, today’s West Seattle 5k was a great success! A big “thank you” to all of our volunteers and sponsors, and the runners and walkers who participated! We had almost 1,200 participants last year and previous years averaged 850-1,000 so this is quite a jump.
We raised over $42,000 for the West Seattle High School PTSA, which funds much needed programs for students, teachers and staff! The PTSA covers educational programming like Saturday School, teacher mini-grants, and more!
With more participants comes some justifiable increases in expenses, but one cost that really jumped was with the City for parking enforcement officers to staff the intersections. This is a delicate balance. Last year adult volunteers staffed the intersections but this year, the permit called for PEO’s which equated to 3x the permit fee last year.
Fortunately our increase in participants makes that permit bill a lot easier to cover. But if were to ever go back to 1,000 runners or less the bill would be a significant obstacle. We feel this is important to mention as most of our costs have barely changed in the last 10+ years and wish to be transparent about the money we raise for the high school.Yours Truly, 2024 Race Co-Directors – Kelley O’Connor, Amy Huey, and Athena Frederick
Volunteers to recognize:
Nicole Ott for help in securing sponsors and all the logistics that come with that.
Amy Doll for coordinating the supplies, kids, teachers and staff!
Erik Bell at Bell Fortina for all our graphics needs including shirt design, posters, banner, yard signs and event photography.
Brian Chung for stepping in as a new additional event photographer.
Renee Phelps and all the NHS students from West Seattle High School for putting out signage, stuffing bags and working the event!
WSHS PTSA Board members – especially Holly and Victoria!!
Owen Reese for coordinating our volunteers. And thank you to the 70+ volunteers who work the event!
Heather Hsu for taking on our Non-Profit Row. We so appreciate you tackling this much needed addition to the event
Lori Sherick and Chris O’Claire and the WSHS 5k student-led committee
Alki businesses and residents – thanks for sharing this special beach for the morning so we could hold this fundraiser to make our local West Seattle High School the best it can be for our students and teachers!
This was the second WS5K since the pandemic hiatus, and 15th anniversary of the first one in 2009.
6:00 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, May 17.

(Reader photo sent Monday by Lara)
Every day we’re continuing to get reports about the pair of birds we’ve dubbed the wandering guinea fowl of West Seattle, including people who haven’t seen our previous stories and/or who mistake them for turkeys. So we’ve been meaning to mention them again, and today’s the day, because we received a call from someone who saw them near the bridge entrance at 35th/Fauntleroy and was worried the birds were in danger of wandering into traffic. That, they’ve done, in other parts of The Triangle and The Junction, so the concern is not necessarily unmerited. In short, we first mentioned them last year; they have a home northeast of The Junction but they are allowed to roam, and seem to do so avidly. Because of that, the Seattle Animal Shelter told us last month, they’ve attempted to capture the guinea fowl, but haven’t had any luck with that. So what would happen if they did capture these birds? SAS spokesperson Melissa Mixon told us, “If they were in our custody, they would go on a stray hold. If no one reclaimed them, they could be placed for adoption.”
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Monday, May 13.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Forecast says the sun’s going away for a day: Cloudy, high in the low 60s. Today’s sunrise was at 5:33 am; sunset will be at 8:38 pm.
(Some Sunday sunset color to the NW, photographed by Gene Pavola)
ROAD-WORK ALERTS
*SDOT says the permanent Highland Park Way/Holden signals are now working. But they have more to do at the intersection:
Over the next couple of weeks we will repair the sidewalk at the northwest corner of Highland Park Way SW. It was damaged by freight trucks driving over it when turning right onto SW Holden St. To address this, we will also adjust the lanes on Highland Park Way SW to allow for wider turns.
Additionally, we will rebuild the curb ramps on the northwest and northeast corners of Highland Park Way and SW Holden St to address issues caught during our ADA accessibility inspection. This work is scheduled from May 10 – 24 and you may have already seen crews working. Our work hours are generally from 7 AM – 4 PM. However, we will need to work overnight to adjust the lanes, which involves removing the current traffic lane markings and repainting the lines to mark the new lane widths.
*PSE’s Beach Drive gas-pipeline project could start this week.
*SDOT’s info page for the Delridge pedestrian-bridge earthquake-safety project is updated with more details about the ongoing work at Delridge/Oregon, which is narrowed as a result:

7:17 AM: That’s a screenshot from a few minutes ago as the SDOT traffic camera at the crest of the West Seattle Bridge showed the first bicyclists crossing the bridge on the Emerald City Ride. Between now and 9 am, the riders, who started near the stadiums and are accessing the bridge via southbound 99, will head over the westbound bridge and onto Harbor Avenue to continue the ride around West Seattle. The ride is on the westbound lanes only; eastbound remains open to motorized traffic. After riding around Alki and down to Fauntleroy, they’ll head back through eastern West Seattle and via the regular path on the low bridge. (Here are ride details sent to riders.) Updates to come.
7:27 AM: That’s from our photographer along Harbor Avenue, as the post-bridge riders head north/west along the West Seattle waterfront.
(added) And some video:
Meantime, the SDOT camera at 1st/Dearborn just showed another wave heading onto the short closed stretch of southbound 99, which closes to riders at 8 am.
This is a ride, not a race, so departures are going in waves.
7:46 AM: Still crossing. Noticed a recumbent rider too.
Thanks to Debra Salazar Herbst for this view of riders on Alki Avenue:
8:10 AM: This is the first Emerald City Ride since 2019; previous rides have included other iconic roadways such as the Alaskan Way Viaduct pre-demolition. The riders, meanwhile, are down to a trickle; SDOT has turned the high-bridge camera to look eastward:
Unrelated to the ride, a car has stalled/broken down on the low bridge (thanks to Rose for the word on that) so access to the westbound low bridge is backed up.
8:27 AM: Watching the live camera pointed north/west on the high bridge again. A few stragglers are still crossing.
That was as of a few minutes ago. Now they’re picking up the cones, so it looks like the bridge part of the course has cleared.
8:35 AM: Down on the low bridge, some riders are headed back to the SODO start/finish line, via the regular path:
8:45 AM: Haven’t seen cars on the high bridge yet (15 minutes remain until the official preannounced “no more bridge access” cutoff).
8:51 AM: High bridge now reopened to motorized vehicles. We’ll check with Cascade later to see what the final registration total was for the ride.
ADDED 5:24 PM: Thanks to Allyne Armitage for rider’s-eye-view photos:

Two months after we first told you about the Cascade Bicycle Club‘s ride across the westbound West Seattle Bridge and around the peninsula, tomorrow is the day for the Emerald City Ride. It starts and finishes in SODO, 7 am until about 11 am, heading onto southbound 99 to get to the westbound West Seattle Bridge – the westbound lanes (NOT the eastbound lanes) will be closed approximately 5:30 am to 9:30 am Sunday. Then the riders head around the peninsula:
(Course map, from Emerald City Ride website)
They’ll head back on the regular bike route across the low bridge. P.S. Registration has closed, so no last-minute signups. Cascade was expecting at least 2,000 riders.
2:58 PM: Thanks for the tips. A crash is blocking multiple lanes on the westbound bridge just west of 99.
3:44 PM: SDOT says the scene is clear.
4:25 PM: Listening back to archived radio exchanges, officers and firefighters at the scene reported the same thing as officers below – two people walked away from the crash. Police checked the plates and the car, registered to a West Seattle address, had not been reported stolen.
6:03 AM: Good morning! It’s Friday, May 3.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Increasing clouds, rain possible later, high in the mid-60s. Today’s sunrise was at 5:47 am; sunset will be at 8:25 pm.

Two years ago, we told you about a natural-gas pipeline replacement project that was at the time scheduled to start soon along a mile-long stretch of Beach Drive and two connecting streets. After what Puget Sound Energy describes as permitting delays, it’s finally about to begin.
Thanks to the area resident who recently told us the project notice was being distributed. We’ve since obtained it from PSE (see it here) – here are the key points:
PSE and InfraSource crews will be replacing portions of the existing underground natural gas main. We’re committed to completing our work safely and efficiently, and our crews will do their best to reduce impacts to you and your neighbors.
Project details
Who: Natural gas crews from PSE and InfraSource
What: Replacing a portion of the underground natural gas main
When: Expected to begin the week of May 13, and last for approximately six months.
Typical work hours: Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. – 3 p.m.
Where: Beach Drive Southwest, 48TH Avenue Southwest, and Lincoln Park Way SouthwestWhat you can expect
There will likely be noise from trucks and heavy machinery
Traffic control flaggers and signs will guide vehicles and pedestrians safely through the project area
o Beach Drive Southwest,48th Avenue Southwest, and Lincoln Park Way Southwest will be reduced down to one lane near the work area
o A portion of the sidewalk on Beach Drive Southwest,48th Avenue Southwest, and Lincoln Park Way Southwest will be closed. Detour signs will be posted
Some street parking will be impacted. “No parking” signs will be placed in the area prior to work beginning
We will work to maintain access to driveways whenever possible, in coordination with impacted neighbors
Some customers along the project route may experience a temporary interruption of natural gas. We’ll
notify impacted customers prior to beginning work requiring an interruption in service. For customers who will have their service interrupted, work inside customer homes may be required to re-light appliances after the service interruption. Please call 888-225-5773 for more information
After the construction is complete, you’ll notice temporary patches in the road and/or sidewalk. These temporary patches will remain until a restoration contractor crew returns to complete the final restoration. The restoration schedule is dependent upon weather, permitting and crew availability
We asked PSE about the work phasing; a spokesperson replied, “Crews will start on the north end and move south. PSE will be replacing an older section of infrastructure in order to continue to provide safe and reliable natural gas service to customers. The project will replace the gas main along Beach DR SW to SW Canada Dr.” Here’s another map sketching out what they’re doing and where. As noted above, the project is expected to last about six months (double the estimate given two years ago).
6:00 AM: Good morning! It’s Wednesday, May 1.
WEATHER + SUNRISE/SUNSET TIMES
Clouds, then clearing, high near 60. Today’s sunrise was at 5:51 am; sunset will be at 8:22 pm.
