Would you recognize when someone is thinking about self-harm – and know how to help them? You can learn this Sunday at Our Lady of Guadalupe, which is inviting community members – including middle- and high-school students – to this workshop:

Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish is hosting a Suicide Prevention Workshop this Sunday, April 21st, from 9 am-12 pm.

This workshop is facilitated by O’Dea High School students and helps participants recognize a person with thoughts of suicide and connects them with resources to help them choose to live. Participants don’t need any formal preparation to attend the training — anyone who wants to make a difference can learn the SAFETALK steps. There will be scheduled breaks and opportunities to practice the skills built in the workshop, including practice on how to talk about this subject with others.

Mental health, depression, and especially suicide are prevalent in our community. The more informed we are, the more we can keep our community safe. Click on this link to sign up or use the QR Code in this flyer.

Whether or not you’re volunteering for Duwamish Alive! this Saturday, you’re invited to the opening ceremonies and a post-event talk – we have new details from Sharon Leishman of the Duwamish Alive! Coalition:

This Saturday will find community volunteers working throughout our Duwamish River Watershed in South Seattle and Tukwila, removing debris from the river in kayaks, restoring salmon habitat, and even restoring a 10,000-year-old bog at Roxhill Park. Several of the 11 event locations which Duwamish Alive Coalition partners are hosting are sacred places of the Duwamish Tribe.

Special opening ceremonies will be held at həʔapus Village Park in Seattle with special guest speakers House Majority Leader and 34th District Rep. Joe Fitzgibbon and Wisdom Keeper Jacob Johns of the Akimel O’Otham and Hopi Tribes, who will be sharing the indigenous perspective on climate change. The public is welcome to attend the opening ceremonies at 10:00 and visit the informational tables. Volunteers will get started with their restoration activities at 10:30.

There are still a few volunteer spots open – for more information go to DuwamishAlive.org This is a family-friendly, free event to improve the health of our watershed and our communities.

Wisdom Keepers Jacob Johns and Jeff Ferguson (of the Spokane Tribe) will be giving a talk at the Duwamish Longhouse at 1:00 on Saturday, April 20th. This is an opportunity for adults and youth to learn more about an indigenous perspective on climate change and the urgency – combined with optimism – that guides indigenous efforts worldwide. Just last night, we brought you the story of Mode Music Studios (WSB sponsor) and nonprofit Mode Music and Performing Arts enlisting community help to move, with their building (and other businesses) right in the path of the Delridge light-rail station’s location. Music being near and dear to the heart of Easy Street Records proprietor Matt Vaughan, he has just announced a unique donation to the Mode campaign – he’s auctioning off his shop’s iconic stage – seen above in video of one of the many shows we’ve covered there – to make room for a new one, after so many unforgettable concerts. From his social-media announcement:

There have been so many iconic moments on our stage, guessing about 2,000 performances. Have a favorite? Discover an artist? Meet a new friend?

Time has come, we need a larger stage and better flow for our cafe patrons and staff. Originally our lil stage was designed for singer/songwriters, DJs, acoustic sets. We eventually added extensions to the stage for larger acts. The list is too long to mention, but yes…this is the same stage @brandicarlile has performed on multiple times, @pearljam and their various side projects, just about every local musician in the PNW. Your next chance to plunge into Puget Sound from Alki Beach for a cause is one week from tomorrow – and this one is taking on disorders collectively known as EB, under the leadership of a West Seattle couple you might know. We received this announcement with the explanation that they’ve done this at their home in previous years but this year “want to get as many West Seattleites to join them as possible!”

Longtime West Seattleites Eddie & Jill Vedder co-founded EB Research Partnership (EBRP) in 2010 along with a dedicated group of parents set out to save their children’s lives. Their community will be rallying around Team Vedder by plunging into the cold waters of Puget Sound off Alki Beach on Sunday, April 21st at 10 am as part of a national campaign to raise money to treat and cure Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a family of painful and life-threatening rare genetic disorders that affect the body’s largest organ: the skin.

The Vedders serve as global fundraisers and ambassadors sharing the mission of curing and treating EB with the world. EBRP is now the largest global nonprofit funding research to discover treatments and cures for EB, and Jill serves as the Board’s chairperson. The organization has raised more than $60 million, funded 140 research projects, increased clinical trials from 2 to now more than 40, and helped lead to the first two ever FDA-approved treatments for EB last year.

The Plunge for Elodie is named after 7-year-old Elodie Kubik, who lives with a severe form of EB. The event began in 2018 in Wellesley, Massachusetts, organized by friends of Elodie’s mother, and has now grown into an annual global fundraising and awareness-raising initiative.

This year, Team Vedder will be plunging Alki Beach with a local EB patient, Patterson, a young boy who, like Elodie, suffers from a severe form of EB. Patterson endures daily bandage changes that can be grueling and take time away from other activities. EB is challenging, as it affects so much more than just his skin. It is a constant battle, both physically and emotionally, as he navigates through pain, itch, inflammation, and wound care. But amidst the challenges, there is a powerful force that emerges – strength and resilience.

“We are inspired by the courage that those with EB, like Patterson and Elodie, show every single day to fight alongside them. Our mission is to cure EB by 2030 and events like the Plunge help us raise the awareness and dollars to achieve it. We have made tremendous progress towards our goal of delivering treatments and a cure; however, we will not stop until there is a cure for every patient and our model can lead the way for all those battling rare diseases,” said EBRP Chairwoman Jill Vedder.

Alki Event Participants – Know Before You Go

-Bring a copy of your signed waiver and registration form, both of which need to be submitted ahead of time online.

-Arrive ready to Plunge with your plunge clothes beneath the clothes you wear to the event.

-Don’t forget to bring warm clothes and towels for after you plunge, comfy shoes that are easy to slip in and out of, and something to put your wet clothes in after!

-There will be no lifeguards on duty.

-Swim caps will be provided, first come-first serve.

This year’s West Seattle Garden Tour is still more than two months away – on June 23 – but the WSGT is already looking ahead to next year in one important part of what they do – giving grants to other nonprofits. Here’s the announcement:

Each year, the West Seattle Garden tour, a 501(c)(3) organization, provides grants to other nonprofits for projects that fit our mission — to promote horticulture, education, and artistic endeavors within West Seattle and neighboring communities. We are now seeking grant applicants for 2025 and nonprofits with eligible projects are invited to apply.

Our 2025 grant application form and guidelines are now available at westseattlegardentour.org/apply-for-a-grant. Completed applications are due by July 15, 2024. Grant amounts historically range from $2,000-$6,000, but larger and smaller grants have been awarded. Successful applicants will receive their funds in March 2025.

Sunday, May 19, is the day for this year’s West Seattle 5K run/walk on Alki – a spring tradition dating back to 2009 – and you can register now if you haven’t already. The season’s first big 5K is coordinated by the West Seattle High School PTSA, which provides the profits to fund a variety of programs, including a staffed Saturday Study Hall, classroom-supply needs, and student-led initiatives. In addition to general registration options, this year, for a second year, the West Seattle 5K will offer a friendly grade-level competition among WSHS students. The grade with the most registrants gets out of homeroom early for a special treat and gets a cash contribution ($250) to their grade-level ASB. Also, the “Sleep In” – just donate and skip the running/walking! – and “sponsor a student runner” options are available to all. Celebrate Earth Day with Duwamish Alive! Help Restore Our River.
Saturday, April 20th, 10 – 2 at multiple watershed locations

Join us for Duwamish Alive! in restoring habitat along the Green-Duwamish River for juvenile salmon that are coming down the river this spring. Our river is home to all 5 salmon species, including Chinook, which are important to our local resident orca. We will be restoring habitat at multiple locations throughout the watershed along the river, its upland forests and creeks – we are all connected. Həʔapus Village Park will have our Duwamish tribal welcome, presentations, and tabling — all are invited, volunteers and visitors. Instruction, tools, and snacks are provided for restoration activities. This is a family friendly event, all ages welcome.

Afterward, attend a special event at the Duwamish Longhouse with two indigenous Wisdom Keepers from the Hopi and Spokane Tribes sharing indigenous perspectives about climate change and their experience attending the Dubai Climate Summit: Duwamish Longhouse 4705 W Marginal Wy SW – 1:00 – 3:00

Today is the first day of WestSide Baby‘s biggest annual diaper donation drive, once known as Stuff the Bus, now From the Bottom Up. Supporters will be collecting diapers and other items for WS Baby all month – and we’ve already heard from one: Morgan Junction Starbucks is hosting a donation drive from today through April 21st:

Westside Neighbors Shelter gets new help, from the sky to the stage

A nearby resident noticed crews installing solar panels recently atop the building in The Triangle that holds Westside Neighbors Shelter, the West Seattle Veteran Center, and American Legion Post 160. We asked shelter manager/post commander Keith Hughes about it; he said the building now has a “14.6 KW Solar Array on the roof. It was all completed with donated equipment and donated labor. By my calculations, it will provide about 65% of our current electrical use, saving us an average of about $450 per month.” We asked about the donors: “This was a joint effort of West Seattle Electric and Solar, Platt Electric Supply, and Mad Energy Solar of Puyallup.” (WS Electric and Solar is Keith’s own company.) Meantime, two other notes about West Seattle’s only emergency shelter, itself operated with donations and volunteers: First, also on the subject of utility bills, the shelter has new help to cover theirs, thanks to a church group from Capitol Hill – read about that here. Second, one week from today you’re invited to support the shelter while enjoying great music – the West Seattle-based Boeing Employees Choir is performing a benefit concert at 4 pm Sunday, April 7th. No tickets needed; donations will be accepted at the door, at St. John the Baptist Episcopal Church (3050 California SW).

Four weeks from tonight, people will gather to be “Instruments of Change” for the West Seattle Food Bank, furthering its mission to prevent hunger and homelessness. The WSFB’s annual fundraising dinner/auction is set for Saturday, April 27, in The Hall at Fauntleroy, and it’s not sold out – yet. This is the 17th year that WSFB will bring together supporters for a “night of food, drinks, games, auctions, raffles, and more, all to help our neighbors and build a strong community.” It all starts at 6 pm, with beverages and appetizers before dinner served by The Hall’s own Tuxedos and Tennis Shoes Catering (see the menu on the same page where you can buy your ticket). The auction items always feature a variety of amazing one-of-a-kind experiences, from gourmet meals to dream getaways. The money raised will help the WSFB continue so many programs for which the need continues to grow, including rent and utility assistance to help people get through a crisis and stay in their homes. West Seattle’s only emergency shelter – powered by donations and volunteers – is moving into spring mode. Its manager Keith Hughes sent a list of its current needs:

I want to thank the West Seattle Community for their generous and continuous support of our efforts to make a difference in the lives of those experiencing Homelessness in the West Seattle community.

For the springtime we are running the Morning Warm-Up Center every day from 7:30 am to 10 am, with breakfast, shower, and laundry available. Our current needs to sustain this effort are:

Regular oatmeal, instant oatmeal, instant hot chocolate, pancake mix, pancake syrup, cornbread mix, tea bags, 12-ounce hot cups (paper, no lids please), regular paper napkins, laundry detergent pods, toilet paper, paper towels.

You can take donations to the shelter at 3618 SW Alaska.

When we saw West Seattle/Fauntleroy YMCA (WSB sponsor) branch executive Cleveland King at last week’s Fauntleroy Community Association annual membership meeting, he told us they’re getting close to a plan for expanding hours at the Fauntleroy Y – a request by many members after news first broke of the location’s possible closure. But as Y leaders said at the January “town hall,” they need community help to ensure its future. Tomorrow is your next chance to pitch in:

A reader just sent that photo of a flyer with the updated times for tomorrow’s gathering of everyone who can help, even if you didn’t get to the lightly attended first meeting. The committees were originally announced as focusing on fundraising, planning, and volunteering.

The Senior Center of West Seattle is currently looking for volunteers to fill several different vacancies at their Junction location. Current volunteer needs:

–Stop and Shop (retail clerk): various days/times

–Kitchen assistant (chop/prep/run a commercial dishwasher): various dates/times

The Fauntleroy Schoolhouse has been part of the heartbeat of West Seattle since 1917. In 1977, Fauntleroy Children’s Center was founded to provide local working families with high-quality, affordable child care. FCC is governed by the Fauntleroy Community Service Agency and is a nonprofit organization.

On behalf of Fauntleroy Children’s Center (FCC), which serves over 130 families in our community, we would love for you to participate in our 37th annual auction.

Our online auction catalog is NOW OPEN for bidding! Families, friends, and neighbors are all welcome to bid. Online auction bidding begins March 9th ends at 11:45 pm on March 17th.

The annual auction is a significant opportunity for the FCC community to come together and ensure the school has funding to carry on its mission of being the place children want to be. Our fundraising goal is $40,000 as we try to help with tuition scholarships, teacher continuing-education credits, rainy-day funds for capital improvements, and raise the final dollars needed to break ground on our new playgrounds!

The Roaring Twenties is the theme for Holy Family Bilingual School‘s Viva La Gala this Saturday (March 16) – you can celebrate the past while helping the school get ready for its future: “Currently, 52% of our student body receives some type of financial assistance and more are still in need. We need your support to help keep our school running strong. Monetary donations of any size are greatly appreciated.” You can help by attending the gala – get tickets here – and/or donating to “Fund A Need” – and/or bidding in the online auction that’s open to all, right now. (Almost 100 unique items and services!) Saturday’s event is at the school hall, 9615 20th SW; doors open at 4:30 pm.

Eight days ago, family and friends of Justin Cline announced the untimely death of the man known not only as Full Tilt Ice Cream‘s co-founder but also a tireless White Center community advocate, husband, and father. Community members have been reaching out to help Justin’s family, wife Ann Magyar and their kids Moss and Ruby, and tonight we have news of another way you can help: West Seattle restaurateur Khalid Agour of Itto’s is hosting a benefit dinner at the West Seattle Eagles‘ headquarters this Sunday (March 17th). All ages are welcome, 5-7:30 pm, and along with dinner, a fundraising auction is planned too. Donation for dinner is $30 (cash-only, please). If this doesn’t work with your schedule, the Eagles are collecting donations at other times too; they’re at 4426 California SW. Here’s a flyer for the dinner/auction benefit.

We told you last month that the West Seattle 5K run/walk on Alki will be back this year on May 19. As of today, registration is officially open! That means it’s time for full details – here’s what the coordinating organization, the West Seattle High School PTSA, tells us:

All profits raised from the West Seattle 5K provide funding for West Seattle High School to fund monthly staffed Saturday Study Hall that benefits an average of 100 students each session, classroom-supply needs, and student-led initiatives.

Thousands of runners and spectators from all corners of Puget Sound and beyond have participated in this 5K in the past 15 years or so. In 2023, we had almost 1,200 registrants and raised $34,000 for West Seattle High School! Participants are drawn to the event by the family fun, the gorgeous scenery, a flat and fast course starting and finishing at the Alki Bathhouse, and all the amenities that Alki Beach has to offer. Prizes will be awarded to the top finishers in many categories.

Coming back for a second year – we will have a grade-level competition among West Seattle High School students. The goal is to create a friendly competition to see which grade gets the most classmates to register. The winning grade gets out of Homeroom early for a special treat and cash ($250) to their grade-level ASB. “We have heard from event runners that they didn’t know this event benefited the high school, so we want to make sure to raise that awareness as well as get as many high schoolers involved as possible,” says Kelley O’Connor, event co-chair.

“As you know, Seattle Public Schools is facing an enormous budget shortfall and limited funding for the programs we know our students need,” says WSHS PTSA president Holly Rikhof. “The WSHS PTSA is dedicated to funding the academic and classroom support we have long taken for granted at West Seattle High School. Until 2023, our students benefited from a levy that funded a robust tutoring program, including school-day, after-school, and Saturday tutoring. This year, we have been able, through your generous donations, to fund a monthly staffed Saturday Study Hall that benefits an average of 100 students each session, classroom supply needs, and student-led initiatives.”

Other popular 5k features include a “Sleep In” and “sponsor a student runner” options. There are buttons on the registration page to donate to the 5k if you’d rather sleep in that morning or don’t wish to run/walk. This is our community neighborhood high school and we hope residents will feel generous in supporting the school and local students. This is a fun way to directly give back!

● Adults are $35 (5/13 and later is $40)
● Youth 19 and under are $20 (5/13 and later is $30)
● West Seattle High School students are $20 (5/13 and later is $30)
● West Seattle High School staff is free (need passcode and can buy shirt for $15)
● Kids under 6 are free (no shirt included, but can buy for $15)
