HOLIDAYS: More West Seattle options for pre-Thanksgiving Christmas trees

Looking for a Christmas tree in West Seattle before Thanksgiving? First, we showed you Junction TrueValue‘s early arrivals a week ago; now, more options. On Alki, Trees by the Sea is back at 2538 Alki Avenue SW (photo above):

Hours are:
Monday-Thursday 12-6
Friday 11-8
Saturday 8-8
Sunday 9-6

We still are getting trees in weekly to ensure people get a great fresh tree for their holiday season. We will have our pop up shop open daily as well with products from our Shipwreck Honey line of products and gifts from the hive. We also decided that since everyone has had a pretty crazy year we would not be raising our prices. Same great quality for the same reasonable price.

No delivery yet – they’re working on it. … Trees also have arrived at West Seattle Nursery, open 9 am-7 pm daily (except they’ll close this Wednesday at 5 pm and be closed on Thanksgiving Day) … We noticed trees at Tony’s Market (35th/Barton) on Sunday but it wasn’t open when we went by today, so no specifics yet … And if you’re wondering, Holy Rosary School‘s tree lot opens this Friday; details are in our calendar listing.

P.S. This will all be in our forthcoming pandemic-modified West Seattle Holiday Guide, launching tomorrow.

1:33 PM: Last Saturday, the West Seattle Food Bank gave out hundreds of turkeys, and distribution at their HQ continues through Wednesday – but they need more, ASAP. We just received the request:

You can help your neighbors enjoy a Thanksgiving meal. Please donate turkeys today!

The West Seattle Food Bank is in need of turkeys to give out to our neighbors this week. As we approach Thanksgiving, there has been record numbers of neighbors coming to the West Seattle Food Bank for holiday groceries.

While we bought several hundred more turkeys than usual, we are at risk of running out! We’ve served over 700 families thus far and are still distributing food another 3 days. We need your help to ensure all our neighbors can enjoy a delicious meal with their family.

Donations accepted:

Monday until 3:00 pm
Tuesday 9:00 am – 3:00 pm
Wednesday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm

West Seattle Food Bank
3419 SW Morgan St.

The WSFB has a garage entrance off Morgan where you can pull in to deliver donations.

4:17 PM: WSFB says frozen small or medium turkeys are preferred, but reader Christine reported trouble finding those at several local stores, so they say they can accept fresh turkeys too, as they have an industrial-size freezer for storage.

WEST SEATTLE GROCERY SHOPPING: Holiday hours & more

We haven’t published a grocery-shopping update in a while – but a note from Suzanne inspired this one, since it’s time to check on holiday hours, anyway.

She points out that late night is a good time to go if you want to avoid crowds. Hours are 5 am-1 am daily. On Thanksgiving Day, the store will close at 2 pm. (2320 42nd SW)

WEST SEATTLE THRIFTWAY: Note for curbside customers at West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) – in the week ahead, that service is only offered Monday-Tuesday (November 23-24) and Friday (November 27) . The store’s regular hours are 5 am-midnight and it’s open until 7 pm Thanksgiving Day. (4201 SW Morgan)

PCC WEST SEATTLE: Closed Thanksgiving Day. Regular hours are 7 am-11 pm. (2749 California SW)

The show must go on(line): ArtsWest presents ‘A Very Merry Kraken Tea Party’ for the holidays

The pandemic won’t stop ArtsWest Playhouse from presenting a holiday show. It’s happening online, starting in less than a week. Here’s the announcement:

In its World Premiere, Justin Huertas’s new holiday mini-musical A VERY MERRY KRAKEN TEA PARTY will be available for digital access beginning November 27, and is on sale now at www.artswest.org.

Featuring five new songs from powerhouse playwright/composer/lyricist Justin Huertas, A VERY MERRY KRAKEN TEA PARTY follows the characters of Justin’s 2019 ArtsWest hit THE LAST WORLD OCTOPUS WRESTLING CHAMPION. As winter hits, the octopus Nia and Lee formed together has mysteriously separated and both have come ashore just as Todd and David are getting ready to celebrate their first Christmas together. With a new problem to solve, and with Grace away on tour in Thailand, all try to figure out how to celebrate holiday love with each other while they remain apart.

“One of the beautiful things about the way Justin writes is that, even though he writes stories that have extraordinary given circumstances, he writes deeply human stories within that context,” said Artistic Director and THE LAST WORLD OCTOPUS WRESTLING CHAMPION director Mathew Wright. “I’m so excited that Justin has chosen to revisit the world and characters he created in OCTOPUS and find out what happens to them during the holidays – and amidst a global pandemic!”

“We learn from so many stories that love is the bow wrapped around the neatly wrapped Christmas gift, but what I’ve learned over the years is that love is also the wrapping and the box—the very act of tearing the present open in anticipation of the unknown is also love,” said creator Justin Huertas. “I was excited to bring these characters that I love so well back to the page and imagine what happens after their Happily Ever After. Setting it in present day 2020 also allowed me to explore what it means to connect at a time when connection is at its most challenging.”

The cast features the return of the original cast of THE LAST WORLD OCTOPUS WRESTLING CHAMPION – Rachel Guyer-Mafune (M. BUTTERFLY, ArtsWest), Christian Quinto (OFFICE HOUR, ArtsWest), Tyler Rogers (HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, Book-It Repertory Theatre), and Porscha Shaw (NINA SIMONE: FOUR WOMEN, Seattle Repertory Theatre; SAINT JOAN, ArtsWest).

The Creative Team features creator Justin Huertas (LIZARD BOY), musical arrangements and musical direction by Steven Tran (HOWL’S MOVING CASTLE, Book-It Repertory Theatre), and production design and editing by Cameron Lee (FOUND AMONG THE PAPERS OF THE LATE ICHABOD CRANE.)

UPDATE: West Seattle Food Bank’s special pre-Thanksgiving food distribution at South Seattle College

(WSB photos)

11:10 AM: Second major pre-holiday food-distribution event of the day in West Seattle, and it’s going fast. The West Seattle Food Bank has staffers and volunteers in the north parking lot at South Seattle College (6000 16th SW; WSB sponsor) with turkeys and other food for those who need it. This too is a drive-up event – approach the entrance from northbound 16th.

Within the first 40 minutes, they told us, they had already given out half the 500 turkeys (and boxes of fresh produce and dairy) that they brought.

But if you missed it, you’re not out of luck – the Food Bank also has pre-holiday distributions at its High Point HQ (35th/Morgan): Monday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm, Tuesday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm, and Wednesday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm, with available food including turkeys and chickens.

11:32 AM UPDATE: The Food Bank was down to the last 25 turkeys but is getting a few more – Eastridge is bringing over its 40 remaining turkeys since its event in The Junction has ended.

P.S. If you are fortunate enough not to need help this holiday season, you might consider helping the WSFB continue to do this work – it’s handling more need than ever, especially after merging with the Helpline, helping people with emergency aid to prevent homelessness – here’s how to donate.

UPDATE: Eastridge Church’s pre-Thanksgiving turkey-giving

(WSB photos)

9:58 AM: Every year, Eastridge Church offers free turkeys and groceries on the Saturday before Thanksgiving. This morning, the annual event is happening pandemic-style – drive-up.

The church is giving out 500 turkeys and bags of other food here (and 1,000 more at its Issaquah campus), plus gloves while they last.

About 30 volunteers are here to help. The line of cars is northbound on 39th (where the church’s entrance is just south of Oregon), approaching from westbound Fauntleroy, and backing up onto SB 38th within 15 minutes. This is the first of three food-distribution events in West Seattle today, as listed in our daily preview.

11:32 AM: Eastridge just wrapped up and had 40 turkeys left, so they’re taking those over to the West Seattle Food Bank distribution at SSC, which had almost run out.

SATURDAY: 3 pre-holiday food-distribution events in West Seattle

One more reminder – tomorrow brings three chances for you to get holiday food at no charge if you need it:

EASTRIDGE CHURCH’S TURKEYS-AND-GROCERIES EVENT: Starting at 9 am Saturday, outside the church at 39th/Oregon, Eastridge’s annual distribution of turkeys and groceries, drive-up-style. They have hundreds to distribute (plus gloves, while they last) and ask people not to arrive early so as not to jam traffic in the area; please approach the church headed northbound on 39th. No-contact – pop your trunk – but keep your mask on, please.

FROM THE WEST SEATTLE FOOD BANK: In addition to what they’re doing at the food bank, they also have a special distribution on Saturday.

The West Seattle Food Bank, partnering with South Seattle College, will have a drive-thru distribution Saturday, November 21st at 10 am at South Seattle College, North Lot #1, 6000 16th Ave SW. Each family can receive a turkey along with a box of fresh produce and dairy. Everyone must wear masks and remain in their car.

Open to all, not just people who are ongoing WSFB clients.

GREATER SEATTLE FIL-AM SDA CHURCH’S HOLIDAY MEAL BOXES: The church at 2620 SW Kenyon has been doing periodic food distribution and on Saturday, starting at 2 pm, they will have 50 boxes to give out, with turkey, potatoes, stuffing, brownie mix, and fruit.

(Photo from past, in-person OLG Ethical Trade Sale)

In pre-pandemic years, we’d have a long list of local holiday bazaars/one-time sales, where you could do some of your gift shopping while supporting artisans/makers both local and global. This year, some have canceled, but others have gone online, like Our Lady of Guadalupe‘s Ethical Trade Sale, happening right now:

Ethical Trade Sale: Get Your Chocolate Advent Calendar, Gifts, and Coffee Today!

Our Lady of Guadalupe’s annual Ethical Trade Sale is online this year! Many of the artisans, farmers, and communities we support through the sale are struggling this year as COVID spreads and sales slow. Through our virtual sale, you’ll find a large variety of unique, quality gifts, AND 20% of sales come back to OLG! Win, win, win! Simply shop through our custom parish page. Bonus, you can get a $10 gift card on 11/21-22 (code: SEGC20). This year, we are also selling Pura Vida coffee. Pura Vida has been VERY generous every year, donating 100% of sales (sometimes even more!). Their business is struggling with COVID and now we can return the generosity. To order their delicious ground or whole bean coffee, contact Erin at erinpedras@centurylink.net by November 30. We’ll have coffee ready to pick up at OLG on December 12 from 11 am-3 pm. Interested in products from our other annual vendors? Visit our website for their links!

Is your bazaar/fundraising sale/other holiday event happening online this year? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thanks!

NEED FOOD? Here’s how to get it in West Seattle before Thanksgiving

We usually feature opportunities for help, such as food distribution, in our nightly pandemic-news roundup. But with the holidays ahead, we’re spotlighting them separately too. So here are three ways you can get food before Thanksgiving (and please wear face coverings, even though you don’t have to get out of your car):

FROM THE WEST SEATTLE FOOD BANK: In addition to what they’re doing at the food bank, they also have a special distribution on Saturday. Here’s the announcement we received today:

We are offering several options for our neighbors this Thanksgiving.

For the week of November 23rd, West Seattle Food Bank distribution hours are:

Monday 10:00 am – 2:00 pm
Tuesday 9:00 am – 2:00 pm
Wednesday 10:00 am – 3:00 pm
Closed Thursday/Friday
3419 SW Morgan St.

We will have turkeys, chickens, and a variety of other items for our neighbors.

Questions? Call 206-932-9023. This is open to all, not just people who are ongoing WSFB clients.

EASTRIDGE CHURCH’S TURKEYS-AND-GROCERIES EVENT: We have already mentioned this several times, but one more reminder: Starting at 9 am Saturday, outside the church at 39th/Oregon, Eastridge’s annual distribution of turkeys and groceries is drive-up-style this year. They have hundreds to distribute and ask people not to arrive early so as not to jam traffic in the area.

P.S. Not in West Seattle but not far, so we mention this weekly in our roundups, Food Lifeline HQ at 815 S. 96th has been distributing food boxes on Fridays, 2-5 pm, and has a distribution this week too.

THANKSGIVING: The Hall at Fauntleroy cancels plan ‘in the interest of health and safety’

Every year for more than two decades, The Hall at Fauntleroy has hosted a free community Thanksgiving dinner for everyone who shows up. Last month, its proprietors announced a pandemic plan – takeaway meals on the holiday. But since then, COVID-19 has surged, and tonight they’ve announced that plan is now off:

With the recent government orders, the rise in Covid-19 cases in our area and in the interest of the health and safety of our community, we are unable to move forward with our annual thanksgiving meal.

To those of you who have donated thus far, know that your generosity will be distributed via our partners at the West Seattle Food Bank/Helpline and the White Center Food Bank.

Though it is difficult to come to terms with not being able to gather with you all this Thanksgiving, we are overflowing with gratitude for every person who has shown up as a volunteer, contributor, or guest over the past 21 years.

Wherever you may find yourselves on this day of thanks, we will be holding you and yours close to our hearts.

Oh. the stories we will have to share when we gather again in 2021!

We will continue to collect new warm clothes, new blankets, new socks, and new hats throughout the holiday season. If you would like to make a donation, please feel to reach out to Meg Haggerty 206-353-8382 with text or voice questions.

If you were counting on this because you can’t afford a holiday dinner – three food-distribution opportunities are coming up on Friday and Saturday – we listed them in last night’s pandemic roundup.

With a week and a half to go until Thanksgiving, and the recommendation to keep it small and simple at home, you might be looking for help with your holiday dinner. WEST SEATTLE SCENE: Early Christmas trees

We’re still working on Thanksgiving info – but just had a Christmas sighting. Trees have arrived at Junction TrueValue (44th/Edmunds). The store tells us they’ll be available for purchase starting by 4 pm or so. (Our forthcoming Holiday Guide will include a list of tree sellers as always – advance info appreciated, westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!)

ONE WEEK AWAY: Pre-Thanksgiving turkey giveaway in West Seattle

Reminder now that we’re one week away: Next Saturday (November 21st) is the day Eastridge Church is giving away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries. This year, because of COVID-19, it’s drive-up distribution instead of line-up. The hours are the same, though, as announced last month – starting at 9 am and continuing for as long as they have turkeys (and groceries, and gloves) left to give away. The church is on 39th SW just south of SW Oregon, across from West Seattle Bowl, and they’re asking people not to show up early so there’s not a traffic jam.

VETERANS DAY: West Seattle Junction flags, and notes for today/tonight

(WSB photos)

In honor of Veterans Day, flags are up in the heart of The Junction. The volunteers who placed them this morning were from organizations including Boy Scouts, the Lions Club of West Seattle, Kiwanis Club of West Seattle, and local Key Clubs.

In observance of the holiday, there are some changes today in addition to what was mentioned in our morning transportation watch, including:

*No classes for most schools
*Most government services are closed, including the Seattle Public Library
*Banking holiday
*USPS holiday

One event happening tonight:

LEGISLATIVE TOWN HALL @ 34TH DISTRICT DEMOCRATS: 7 pm online, our area’s largest political organization meets. A “town hall” with local state legislators is at the heart of the agenda, which is here, and includes a registration link if you’re interested in attending.

THANKSGIVING & BEYOND: Got something for this year’s WSB Holiday Guide?

|    Comments Off on THANKSGIVING & BEYOND: Got something for this year’s WSB Holiday Guide?
 |   Holidays | West Seattle news

Less than three weeks until Thanksgiving, and we’re starting to get holiday questions. So, this weekend we’ll be working on this year’s WSB Holiday Guide, so we’re inviting you to send information. For starters” Is your restaurant/store selling something special for Thanksgiving – prepared holiday meals? Festive beverages? Or? Please send us the info – what, when, how to order, etc. And we’re happily accepting information for the rest of the season, too – are you having a distanced event? Online event? Sale? Donation drive? Send us that info too! And of course, as we get a little further into November, we’ll be happy to get holiday-lights info, too. Whatever you want the community to know, westseattleblog@gmail.com is the best way to reach us – thank you!

THANKSGIVING: Annual turkey giveaway is on, pandemic style

(WSB file photo)

Another Thanksgiving-season tradition will continue with pandemic modifications. Three weeks from today, Eastridge Church will give away hundreds of turkeys and bags of groceries – this year, drive-thru style. Here’s the announcement:

The Eastridge Church annual turkey and groceries giveaway is Saturday, November 21 and we will again be giving away 1,500 meals at our Issaquah and West Seattle campuses. We are excited to bless our neighbors with these free meals!

In light of Covid-19 restrictions, the giveaway will be contactless this year as a drive-thru. We ask that everyone wear a mask and remain in their cars when receiving their turkey. We also ask that people refrain from arriving too early to avoid traffic back-up on public streets.

Sadly, we can’t provide coats [this year] but will be providing children and adult gloves. As always, we don’t require proof of need for a family to receive any of the services.

This will start at 9 am Saturday, November 21st, outside the church at 39th/Oregon. We’ll check on the traffic-plan specifics as this gets closer.

WEST SEATTLE SATURDAY: Halloween & more

ARTSWEST GALA WRAPUP: A week of giving and celebrating West Seattle’s playhouse/gallery concludes with a 7 pm online party. Not too late to register! Go here.

DAYLIGHT SAVING TIME ENDS: Early Sunday, we “fall back” an hour – at 2 am, it becomes 1 am.

HALLOWEEN: Skeleton Theatre’s pandemic production; plus – more decoration, trick-or-treat locations

Two days until Halloween! Updates:

SKELETON THEATRE: Like so many things, the front-yard animatronic-skeleton extravaganza has had to evolve for this pandemic year. From the crew’s spokesperson Maia Low: “To protect our friends and neighbors (and ourselves!) from the hazards of gathering at a live show, the Skeleton Theatre crew decided to put our COVID-specific show online this year. The show is on the Skeleton Theatre website.” (And above, via YouTube. It’s short but fun!)

WSB HALLOWEEN PAGE UPDATE: The list of decoration locations and no-contact trick-or-treat events on our page continues to grow. Here’s one that serves as both:

That scene is from the Alki home of “Nightfall Orphanage,” presenting “Ghosts of Halloween Decorations Past” – “no contact, GRAB & GO TRICK OR TREAT on Friday 10/30 and Saturday 10/31, 5:30 pm – 9 pm.” Family-friendly. Find it on our list, along with many others – these are decorations up now, so you can also drive by or walk by most if not all locations any time through Halloween. Lots of photos on the page too, so you can see them even if you don’t go out to look. Anything to add? Not too late – westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!

TRICK-OR-STREET BLOCKS: West Seattle has more than a few of these, according to the city’s map. (They’re explained here.)

WEST SEATTLE HALLOWEEN: More decoration locations, more trick-or-treat events…

Just three days until Halloween. Thanks again to everyone who continues sending info for the West Seattle Halloween Guide – we weren’t sure we would have one this year, but a reader suggested a list of decorations, so we started with that … added the no-contact trick-or-treat event announcements … and it’s a lively list. Most of the decoration listings have photos, so you can enjoy them even if you don’t go out to drive by or walk by. Some are from locations where Halloween is a big production every year, only modified this year – for example, above is a scene from “Meeds Manor” at 45th/Stevens – no haunted house this year, but decorations you can check out day or night (they’re collecting West Seattle Food Bank donations as always, too). Got a decoration location or trick-or-treat event that’s not on our list? westseattleblog@gmail.com – thank you!

HELPING: West Seattle Thriftway launches new holiday-giving event

One holiday tradition won’t be happening but will be replaced by something else fun. Starting today, West Seattle Thriftway (WSB sponsor) is launching a holiday-giving event in which you have a chance to get a gift as well as give one. Here’s the announcement:

Locally owned West Seattle Thriftway announced that due to COVID-19 they will not be hosting their long-running “Holiday Taste” this year. Instead they will be hosting a holiday giving event with a goal to raise at least $40,000 for the West Seattle Food Bank.
:
For the last 22 years West Seattle Thriftway along with its vendor partners has presented a Holiday Taste event showcasing new and specialty items for the holiday season. The event featured over 40 vendors, more than 150 items, and was enjoyed by several hundred customers each year. This year due to COVID-19 restrictions, we are forced to cancel this yearly event. In its place we have worked with our vendors to create a Holiday Giving Event to “do something big” for the West Seattle Food Bank and at the same time provide some of our customers with a unique holiday sample experience. With the help of over 60 vendors, we have compiled 50 amazing “Holiday Bounty Boxes” full of special products with an estimated value of over $500 each. Customers will be able to enter a raffle for the boxes with a $5 donation per ticket, and all ticket sales will benefit the West Seattle
Food Bank.

With the help of our community and our generous vendors our goal is to raise $40,000 for the food bank. West Seattle Thriftway will match all donations up to $20,000. “We have an amazing opportunity to do a lot of good for our community. Use of the food bank’s services has increased dramatically due to COVID-19, and they are seeing many people who have never needed to use their services before. Their mobile food delivery service has increased by 300% alone since March. We hope that the community comes out big for this event and demonstrates what the food bank’s motto is; neighbors helping neighbors.”

West Seattle Thriftway was founded in 1988 by Paul and Connie Kapioski. The store is located at the intersection of California Ave. SW and Fauntleroy Way SW in West Seattle’s Morgan Junction.

HALLO-WEEK: Fauntleroy Community Association invites you to hunt for #FCApumpkins

Another Hallo-week activity! The photo and announcement are from the Fauntleroy Community Association:

In an effort to bring some fun to the dwindling daylight, throughout the week of October 26-30, The Fauntleroy Community Association is sponsoring a community pumpkin hunt. If you search around the Endolyne/Fauntleroy area, you may find a white pumpkin — or even a beautiful blown glass pumpkin — with a note attached. Some even include a gift certificate for use at our local merchants, compliments of the FCA board members. We hope you’ll participate. We encourage you to take your pumpkin home with you, then take a picture of yourself with your pumpkin, and post it on social media, with #FCApumpkins

Enjoy!

2020 Board Members

We’re also adding this to the WSB West Seattle Halloween page – which we’re updating multiple times daily this week, as new decoration-location reports and trick-or-treat events/locations come in!

HALLOWEEN: Decoration locations & more on our seasonal page

(By Christopher Boffoli)

If you missed the mention in today’s event list — this year’s WSB Halloween page is now live. Though many of the traditional seasonal events have been canceled because of the pandemic, some no-contact celebrations are on, so they’re listed, as are the decoration locations suggested by readers. Still plenty of time to add more; email westseattleblog@gmail.com if you have (or have seen) fun decorations or if you know of a distanced event we don’t have yet!

THANKSGIVING: Hall at Fauntleroy’s 2020 plan, and how you can help

In a normal year, it would seem a bit too early to talk about Thanksgiving. But … well, it’s 2020. The Hall at Fauntleroy, which usually presents a free sit-down community feast, has announced its plan for this year, and how you can help:

The 22nd annual Hall at Fauntleroy Community Thanksgiving meal will be on Thanksgiving Day – Thursday, November 26th – from 11 am to 2 pm.

This year’s feast will be Take-out style.

We will be in front of the Hall at Fauntleroy handing out fully prepared Thanksgiving meals and totes with other essentials.

The Hall at Fauntleroy is located at 9131 California Ave SW.

To our amazing volunteers, we can’t wait to gather for full service dining next year!

For now, we invite you to breathe deeply into this pause and come on by to pick up a meal for you, a friend, family member or a neighbor.

We are accepting, and would truly appreciate, donations:

~ Reusable grocery/tote bags

~ Masks

~ Hand sanitizer

~ New blankets

~ Hand warmers

~ Cash donations

Please call Meg Haggerty 206-353-8382 to arrange for drop off of donations by Friday November 20th.

In the spirit of our core mission of gathering to feed the heart, soul and bellies of the community, we would like to put out a special thank you and invitation to our colleagues in the hard hit hospitality and arts industries.

We hope to see all of you as we navigate this different kind of year ~ even if it is just a drive by with a honk and wave!

Brought you to by Seeds of Love, the Haggerty Family, and from the generous donations of our neighbors and community.
