9:27 AM: No ETA yet per SDOT spokesperson: “Our repair crew is working with urgency to assess the issue and determine next steps to reopen the bridge to traffic as soon as possible.”

8:48 PM: Citywide Position 8 Councilmember Teresa Mosqueda, a North Delridge resident, is first to declare victory. “We knew this was going to be a close election given the frustration many people feel right now coming out of the pandemic, in an economy that isn’t working for all people, and a homelessness crisis that impacts too many,” she said in an emailed statement … City Attorney candidate Nicole Thomas-Kennedy says in an emailed statement that she’s not ready to concede: “The primary prepared us to have to wait several days for complete results of this election, but I’m as hopeful tonight as I was then.” … Updating the results above to show exact percentages and vote totals.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT ON VIDEO: Sent by Justin:

Justin says it happened on SW Edmunds near The Junction: “Broad daylight on a fairly busy street – unbelievable! Keep an eye out for the vehicle that did it, I bet they’re hitting a bunch of cars.” His car, like the theft target reported here earlier today, is a Lexus RX 400h.

5:48 PM: Now that CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky has given her OK to the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine for children 5-11, parents can start arranging to get their kids vaccinated. We’ll be building a West Seattle list and appreciate any tips. For starters, we’re checking with the operators of the city’s newly opened West Seattle vaccine clinic – open Fridays and Saturdays – who told us at the launch announcement last week that they expected to be ready to go when pediatric clearance was given. We’ll add whatever we find out – updates to come!

ADDED: Alice says Walgreens is making appointments for kid vaccinations.

ADDED WEDNESDAY: The city says its clinics, which would include the one at Neighborhood House, will start vaccinating newly eligible children this weekend – by appointment only. Here’s the appointment link.

ADDED WEDNESDAY AFTERNOON: Thanks for the continued tips. A parent just scheduled through Bartell Drugs in White Center and says CVS (which has a location in Burien) plans to start offering vaccine appointments for that age group on Sunday. … Also, Seattle Public Schools has just announced vaccine clinics including three at West Seattle schools – details are here.

Two West Seattle Crime Watch reports:

BIKES STOLEN, ANOTHER DUMPED: Less than a week and a half ago, we published Margaret‘s report about losing a bicycle to a thief/thieves who left another behind. Now it’s happened again:

We had two more bikes stolen from our shed (Sunday) night, and again, another bike was discarded. We live on Andover between Admiral and Alaska Junctions. The blue Schwinn bike and black Diamondback bike were the ones that were taken. The orange bike was the one that was discarded.

Please let us know if you are looking for an orange bike or if you see the ones we are missing.

CATALYTIC CONVERTER THEFT: Just in from Matt: “The catalytic converter was stolen off my car while it was parked in the parking lot of the YMCA on Snoqualmie yesterday, between 6 pm and 7 pm.” (Added) Matt’s car is a It is a 2006 Lexus RX 400h.

UPDATE: Rescue response at 34th/Morgan

1:01 PM: A Seattle Fire “rope rescue” response has been sent to the Stewart Manor apartment building at 34th/Morgan, for a report of a “person hanging out of a window.” Police have been at the building for the past few hours, for what we’re told was a “domestic dispute,” but we’re not sure yet if the incidents are related.

1:03 PM: The person has reportedly been brought back inside the apartment by officers. (Content warning: Photo here sent by Gay, shows officer hanging onto person.) Medics are evaluating.

1:11 PM: Dispatch has been told that one officer was injured as well. (added) We talked to medics at the scene; they say the officer’s injuries were very minor. The person who was rescued will be taken to Harborview.

ADDED WEDNESDAY: Here’s the SPD summary of what happened:

At 1246 hours, an individual involved in an earlier incident was causing a disturbance and removed to a friend’s apartment. As soon as they got into the apartment the individual attempted to jump out of a plate glass window that was on the fourth floor of the building. Officers were notified and responded. As they entered, they noticed the subject hanging out of the window with his friend barely holding on to him. Officers responded to assist and grabbed him to prevent him from falling. They held on for over 10 minutes while waiting for Seattle Fire to arrive. Officers attempted to get him to comply but were unable to. Once SFD arrived they devised a plan to pull him back into the apartment. Shortly after, they were able to pull him back into the apartment but not before he shattered a plate glass window. Medics arrived and gave the individual in crisis a narcotic to calm him down. He was then able to be strapped to a gurney and transported to the hospital. Several officers were injured due to the falling glass, however; no officers needed hospitalization.

You asked, so we asked: What ever happened to 45th/Admiral crossing improvements?

Two years ago, the city announced that 45th/Admiral crossing improvements had “won” in the Your Voice, Your Choice program – in which people could vote on whether certain small transportation projects would be developed. Jeff emailed us a few days ago to ask why the promised improvements had yet to materialize; concerned community members had been seeking safety improvements there for years before the YVYC vote. So we asked SDOT, which pointed us here, where the plan is recapped as “a new curb bulb on the northeast corner, new curb ramps, new marked crosswalk, and adding a pair of rectangular rapid flashing beacons on the east leg.” As for the construction schedule, spokesperson Ethan Bergerson says it’s expected sometime this fall/winter: “The exact construction schedule is still being determined, and will depend on the weather and crew availability.” The. project (originally proposed for 44th/Admiral) is expected to cost about $120,000.

CORONAVIRUS: 65 new cases in Seattle Public Schools, similar to previous week

This week’s update of COVID-19 cases in Seattle Public Schools shows an increase similar to a week earlier – 65 newly reported cases among the district’s 90+. schools, down a bit from the 68 new cases reported a week earlier. Here are the school-by-school breakouts for our area, with the changes compared to what was on the dashboard last week – again, the numbers are cumulative for the entire school year so far:

VIDEO: Skeleton Theatre 2021’s encore night

The rain has stopped, good news for watching Skeleton Theatre in person during its second and final 2021 night. The animatronic-skeleton show in an east Admiral front yard (36th/Hanford) is just six minutes long this year, and it’s goofy, not scary. If you don’t want to go watch in person, you can watch it online instead.

The show’s been a labor of love for 15 years now, created and staged by a team of family and friends led by Chris;

The show’s running continuously – with a few minutes between runs, for a reset – until 9 pm.

Once again I have to report another stolen vehicle. On Thursday or Friday our gray 2003 Ford F-250 diesel was stolen from our shop on West Marginal Way SW. WA license plate B70024X. Police report 21-290159.

MONDAY NIGHT: Thanks to Jacquelyn Crumpler for sending the video! Jacquelyn wrote, “Look what I found trying to figure out the dam by Dragonfly Park! This seemed to be the only one, but I only watched for 5 or so minutes.” A short guide to Longfellow Creek salmon-watching (including a map) is here; this creek has been less hospitable to salmon survival than Fauntleroy Creek because of factors including toxic urban runoff.

ADDED TUESDAY: John McIntyre also sends word of a salmon sighting and suggests the footbridge at Yancy Street (east of 28th) as a viewing spot.

SEEN OFF WEST SEATTLE: Cruise ship heads out, purse-seine fishing boats head in

Thanks to Gary Jones for sending the photo from Alki Point this murky afternoon. The cruise ship Ovation of the Seas is headed out again (but as we reported over the weekend, it’ll be back). The fishing boats, meantime, are purse seiners making their almost-annual appearance – this area is open to this kind of salmon fishing until 6 pm today. Jim Borrow says it’s been a busy day, sending this photo from the same area:

Jim wrote, “Mid-morning I counted 7 to 9 fishing boats off Bainbridge Is. and Alki, including the one very close to the shore in the near foreground and the one in the distance in this photo.”

Thanks for the tips. Harbor Avenue SW is reopening after a situation involving police. SPD tells us they were dealing with a “person in crisis” who jumped out of an ambulance and ran into traffic. The person is back in custody now and will be taken to the hospital, and the road is reopening.

ELECTION 2021: Don’t let that low-turnout prediction come true

As of noon today, King County Elections had received ballots from just under 25 percent of voters in West Seattle and South Park. That beats the citywide percentage of 23.7%, but it means a lot of ballots are still unmarked. If yours is still sitting on a desk or counter waiting to be filled out, time’s ticking, but it’s not too late to help beat the predictions of low turnout. Your ballot has 17 local/state races and issues. If you plan to use USPS mail, it needs to be postmarked by tomorrow, so you’ll want to get it out as soon as possible. If you’re going to use an official dropbox – there are three in West Seattle, one in White Center, and one in South Park (map/addresses here) – 8 pm Tuesday is your deadline. Lost your ballot? WEST SEATTLE CRIME WATCH: 2 store robberies; fire-station damage

Three incidents in West Seattle Crime Watch:

7-11 ROBBED: Thanks for the tip on an early-morning Sunday robbery at the 35th/Avalon 7-11; we weren’t able to get details until today. The police summary says the robber walked into the store around 4 am Sunday, “possibly grabbed food and masks … waited for all the customers to leave, and walked up to the victim and demanded money.” The victim said no; the robber “implied that he had a gun and became verbally aggressive,” then took $100 in cash, cigarettes, and the previously suspected stolen items, before leaving on foot. Officers searched the area with a K-9 team but didn’t find him.

ARMED ROBBERY WITH BLOW TORCH: Around 10:30 am Sunday at the Westwood Village Bed Bath and Beyond store, according to a police summary, this shoplift-turned-robbery happened: Two people walked into the store; one went into the kitchenware section “and grabbed a pasta roller machine (valued at $199.99),” then “pulled out a yellow blow torch and burned the security tag. An employee smelled the burning and confronted the (thief),” who then “concealed the pasta roller and walked toward the employee with the blow torch. The employee feared for her safety, so she left the area.” The thief-turned-robber left the store with the stolen item. The second person was questioned by police.

FIRE STATION DAMAGED: Just before 1 am today, police were called to a report of two people ‘damaging” Fire Station 29 in North Admiral. We heard the dispatch but not how it turned out, so we requested the report this morning. After hearing footsteps on the roof, a firefighter found four people up there. Two jumped into a tree, climbed down it, and ran away. The other two stayed there with station crew until police arrived. The report says the station’s fuel meter was damaged because that’s what the four climbed on to get access to the roof. The report says one of the two suspects that officers talked to “wanted to climb something, and the fire station appeared to be climbable.” Police found a backpack with a case of beer, which apparently belonged to one of the two who ran away; the suspects who did not run had beer cans in their backpacks, though they were under 21. The two were not booked but will be investigated for property dsestruction and unlawful possession/consumption of alcohol, the report says, We’re checking with SFD regarding the cost/extent of damage to the fuel meter. (Added) SFD spokesperson Kristin Tinsley says the damage was minor and the station is operating normally.
