West Seattle, Washington
22 Saturday
Thanks for the tip. SFD and SPD have responded to a 2-vehicle crash on 35th SW near SW Southern. Texter says it’s a rear-end crash involving a van and a Prius. Avoid the area for a while.
The new start date for closing Sylvan Way’s east end is part of the weekly preview for the Delridge repaving-and-more project. Here are the main points, from SDOT:
*The Sylvan Way SW intersection closure has been rescheduled to begin as early as April 6. Local access will remain available for Home Depot, Sherwin-Williams, and ampm via the Sylvan Way SW and SW Orchard St intersection.
*Bus stop upgrades are happening throughout the corridor including at SW Hudson St, SW Holly St, SW Myrtle St, SW Graham St, and SW Holden St
*Roadway upgrades on SW Hudson St between Delridge Way SW and 25th Ave SW beginning soon
*The west side of SW Hudson St will be closed as a part of this work
‘*Roadway demolition on the west side of Delridge Way SW between the Longfellow Creek Green Space and SW Graham St is beginning next week
*Potholing for duct bank work resumes next week on the east side of Delridge Way SW between SW Holden St and SW Thistle St

3:59 PM: Beach Drive is blocked just south of Me-Kwa-Mooks because of a crash investigation. And that’s why a helicopter is in the area. Details to come.
4:02 PM: We have learned at the scene that tbe crash killed a motorcycle rider. The SPD Traffic Collision Investigation Squad is on this way; Beach Drive will be blocked both sides of the park for hours.
4:28 PM: SPD tells us the collision also involved a motor-vehicle driver who was pulling out of a parking space on the street and “didn’t see” the rider before colliding with him. The rider, police say, is a 60-year-old man. He was riding a scooter-type small motorbike.
6:38 PM: Update from police via SPD Blotter:
At approximately 3:20 p.m., the driver of a sedan parked on the east side of Beach Drive Southwest pulled into the lanes of travel to attempt a U-turn. A man driving a motor scooter traveling north on Beach Drive attempted to avoid the car when it pulled out into traffic, but the two collided. Good Samaritans performed CPR on the 61-year-old victim until Seattle Fire Department medics arrived and took over. SFD pronounced the man deceased at the scene.
We’ll be checking back at the investigation scene soon.
7:48 PM: As first noted in comments, the street is open again – we just drove by.
ADDED: Two more details from an early police-report summary: The “sedan” is an Acura, and an evaluation of its driver showed no signs of intoxication/impairment.
6:07 AM: Good morning! Cloudy forecast today, with a high in the 50s.

Two weekend road-work alerts from SDOT:
HIGHLAND PARK
On Saturday, April 3 and Sunday, April 4, crews will be replacing another set of concrete panels at the intersection of SW Henderson St and 9th Ave SW. This is additional work to what was started last week at this intersection. Some parking will be restricted nearby to allow two lanes of traffic to flow normally past the work zone. Traffic control and parking restrictions will remain in place until early on Monday, April 5, to allow the concrete time to fully harden. This work is weather permitting, and we will share updates if the schedule changes. If possible, we ask you to please plan your weekend travels accordingly to detour around this work and avoid the work areas.
SOUTH PARK
On Saturday, April 3, crews will start installing speed humps in South Park. Crews will install a total of 18 speed humps in the neighborhood over the course of several weekends, starting with installing 3 to 4 of the speed humps this Saturday. The speed humps are being installed as part of the Reconnect West Seattle Home Zone in South Park to discourage speeding and cut-through traffic throughout the neighborhood. Work hours are approximately 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. We will put up “no park” signs near the speed hump locations in advance of the construction.
6:03 AM: Good morning and welcome to April! Partly sunny today, with a high in the mid- to upper 50s (it hit 62 on Wednesday!).

If you were dreading the plan to close the east end of Sylvan Way, between Orchard and Delridge, “as soon as today,” here’s a bit of a reprieve – it’s been postponed. SDOT now says the closure, which was announced last week, won’t start until next week. They promise more info in the weekly update on the preparing-for-RapidRide H Line project, which usually is sent on Fridays.
After reader questions about a multi-day road closure on SW Yancy between Avalon and 28th [map], we inquired with the team building the Transitional Resources supportive-housing project on that block. They had done notification but as is so often the case, closures like this affect people beyond the immediate zone for which notification is required. TR tells us the closure is for storm-drain work related to the project, and it’s expected to last about three more weeks.
6:03 AM: Good morning! More sunshine today, after another cold night that started this way:

Thanks to Sharonn for forwarding the alert from Compass Construction: The tower crane that’s been working on the 2-building Maris Apartments project at 4722 Fauntleroy Way SW and 4721 38th SW is coming down tomorrow (Saturday, March 27th), after a year and a half. The notice says that will re-route vehicle traffic off Fauntleroy between Alaska and Edmunds and will close the pedestrian walkway on the east side of that block. Removal of this tower crane will leave one in West Seattle, at the 1250 Alki SW project.
A new road closure is part of the weekly update on the Delridge Way repaving-and-more project preparing for the RapidRide H Line launch. Sylvan Way between Orchard and Delridge “will be closed as early as March 31 for roadway demolition and paving,” SDOT says, adding that the closure will continue “into April.” The somewhat parallel leg of Orchard will be the recommended detour to get to and from the rest of Sylvan Way. Other key points for the week ahead:
*SW Trenton St on the east side of Delridge Way SW is closed and will remain closed for several weeks to complete roadway, sidewalk, and curb ramp paving in the area. SW Thistle St has temporarily re-opened during this closure.
*Landscaping is beginning throughout the corridor and will continue into April
*Roadway and electrical upgrades on SW Hudson St between Delridge Way SW and Puget Blvd SW have been rescheduled
*Roadway demolition on Delridge Way SW near the SW Findlay St intersection will flip to the west side beginning as early as March 29
*Intersection upgrades continue at SW Kenyon St and SW Holden St
The full weekly work-plan preview is here. The work is scheduled to continue into fall, with the Route 120/RapidRide H conversion expected next year.

From SDOT, heads up on two areas of southeast West Seattle planned for repaving:
On Saturday, March 27 and Sunday, March 28, crews will be repaving 1st Ave S between S Cloverdale and SW Kenyon St from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM each day.
During this work, this section of 1st Ave S will be closed to through traffic. Detour signage will be available to help drivers navigate this closure. People driving should follow the detour signs and use Highway 509 to travel north and south around the area.
Local access to businesses will be maintained, and 1st Ave S will fully reopen after 3:30 PM on Saturday and Sunday.
Also| Paving at the intersection of SW Henderson St and 9th Ave SW:
