3:10 PM: SFD confirms it’s a garbage-truck fire and says it’s “predominantly contained to the garbage compartment… Crews are working to restart the engine to unload the contents and extinguish the fire.”
3:22 PM: Update from SFD: “Crews are unable to restart the engine. Rescue Company 1 is responding. The plan is to cut into the side of the garbage compartment of the vehicle to access the fire. Once extinguished, the garbage truck can be safely towed off the freeway.”

SDOT just announced another closure of the West Seattle low bridge as it continues replacing gates damaged when a driver hit them two years ago:
The next round of repairs and improvements are coming for the South Spokane Street Swing Bridge (also know as the Low Bridge).
We will close the Spokane Swing Bridge to replace the barrier gate at the East side of the bridge. During this time, people will not be able to drive across the bridge, but they will be able to bike/roll or walk across.
When?
Beginning at 7 am Saturday, September 26, and ending at 4 am Monday, September 28.
Why?
As a result of the September 2024 vehicle collision, the entire barrier gate system has been having issues. We will be replacing the barrier gate at the East side of the bridge.
Crews replaced the west gate during a weekend-long closure last month

3 PM: Just in via police radio, a tree is reported down across the northbound lane in the 5900 block of Beach Drive SW [map]. The dispatcher told officers SDOT has been notified; avoid the area for a while.
3:25 PM: Reader photo added above (thank you!). They report, “Tree crew just arrived on scene.”
6:55 PM: Hadn’t heard any updates, so we just went down to look. Tree crew still on scene, blocking most of the NB lane, no flagger, so be careful.
12:39 PM: A reported fire atop a power pole has left nine homes without power and brought an emergency response blocking 21st SW in the 5900 block [map], in an area where there are few outlets. Avoid the area for a while.
1:17 PM: SPD officers who were helping with traffic control just told dispatch the road is open and they’re leaving. City Light is reported to be on scene.
2:11 PM: Now the SCL outage map shows more than 200 homes out. Added a screenshot above. The map categorizes the cause as “environmental.” (We’ll follow up with SCL tomorrow for something more detailed.)
2:38 PM: Nearby resident reports a new pole just went by on a flatbed (photo above), so repairs might take a while longer.
7:32 PM: A lot longer. The neighbor who first spotted the new pole says the crew told her they just got clearance to install it, and they’re estimating midnight restoration. Meantime, as discussed in comments, we sent an inquiry to SCL’s media mailbox – and just heard back from spokesperson Jenny Levesque, who says the System Operations Center is currently estimating 10:30 pm.
12:04 AM: Texter tells us the power returned about 20 minutes ago, meaning the outage lasted almost 12 hours.
MONDAY 8:02 PM: Just heard from City Light spokesperson Kate Jacobs with the answer to our question about how the pole fire started. In short, a change-of-seasons problem: “During extended dry weather, dust and grime can collect on the insulators that hold power lines away from the pole. When the first light rain arrives, that layer gets damp and can allow a small amount of electrical current to leak across the surface rather than staying on the line. In this case, that current appears to have traveled down to a metal bolt in the wooden crossbeam near the top of the pole. Our crews believe the bolt burned through the wood, which caused the fire and resulting outage.”

4:32 PM: SFD and SPD are at California and Genesee, where a collision is reported to have involved a minivan driver and bicycle rider. The intersection is at least partially blocked, reportedly on the west side. More information when we get it.
4:48 PM: We’ll be checking with SFD on injuries. They canceled a dispatch for a medic unit – which would have been needed for serious injuries – and, according to a texter (who sent the photo above), transported at least one person by ambulance instead.
4:55 PM: SFD has closed the call.
6:14 PM: According to SFD spokesperson Kaila Lafferty, this involved a scooter, not a bicycle. Two teenagers were on the scooter and both were taken to hospitals by private ambulance: “Approximately 13-year-old female in stable condition” and “Approximately 14-year-old male in stable condition.”
